Well, Pat and Bill’s The Village Inn at Whipton
is exactly that.

The Old Inn
Nestled in the middle of Dartmoor
is The Old Inn; a Hall & Woodhouse
pub-restaurant managed by Jenny
Heard. A perfect base from which
to explore the spectacular moors,
it is dog friendly, spacious and has
a lovely garden. It also offers free
Wi-Fi and a relaxed, welcoming
atmosphere, as well as a good
selection of wines and awardwinning Badger ales.
Many old favourite and classic
dishes are available, including
delicious vegetarian options, a children’s menu and a legendary mini pud section. This
allows you to sample up to six different puddings at once and is perfect for the indecisive.
Spoilt for choice, my guest and I opted
for Blue Vinney-stuffed mushrooms, and
tasty prawn and pepper toast for starters,
followed by traditional British sirloin
steak and dreamy lobster bisque fish pie.
We finished with banoffee creme brulee
and two of the mini puds - strawberry
pannacotta (fresh strawberry compote
set in vanilla cream) and raspberry
cheesecake, which were absolutely
divine and priced very reasonably.

Local resident
takes over the
Bluebell Restaurant
The Bluebell restaurant has recently been
taken over by local resident Sue Grace.
Sue has taken over the spacious 82-cover
licensed restaurant and all the staff, priding
themselves on locally sourced and home
cooked produce.
Their carvery is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. On Sunday,
there is a choice of four meat available with
a selection of eight veg. All meats are slow
roasted for tenderness and flavour and all the
vegetables are steamed.
During the week a choice of two meats is
available and if the carvery isn’t for you
there is a selection of other options available
on the menu and a great selection of drinks
and deserts.
Booking for Sundays is recommended to
avoid disappointment.
All day breakfast is available and they cater
for evening functions such as birthdays,
anniversaries, coach parties and weddings.
They are open Monday to Friday from

Set right in the centre of town, this 16th Century
coaching inn has mellowed into a beautiful
oak-timbered local pub, specialising in good beer,
superb wine and excellent food.
All ingredients are locally sourced and beautifully
cooked. I started with meaty king prawns with a tangy
chilli and lime dressing, while my partner chose the
warm duck salad. For the main course she plumped for roast lamb shank with
cranberry, mint and brandy sauce - her satisfied smile said it all. I went for the
roast duck with blackberry and Port sauce - rich and undeniably delicious.
My partner completed the meal with a white chocolate and Baileys cheesecake.
Regrettably, all I could manage was a black coffee and a pledge to come
prepared for a veritable feast next time.

A trip to the cinema, eating Ice-cream on the promenade at Lyme Regis or going to see
a musical may not be the things you would necessarily associate with living in a care home.
At Eleighwater House Retirement Home, we try and make resident’s wishes come true. Just
because you are in your twilight years, shouldn’t stop you enjoying some of the things you
liked to do. Our resident’s regularly enjoy outings, craft days visits from the local school who
we are linked with, The Archie Project to promote Dementia Awareness.
The gardens are accessible to residents, with an abundance of plants, herbaceous borders and
shrubs. Staff are on hand to accompany residents, for walks around the garden. There are many
different areas to the garden, and during the year the colours are outstanding, from the winter
snowdrops to the spring bulbs, and the blossoms on the trees through to the summer bedding
plants, and hanging baskets and then the wonderful Autumnul colours, from the many species
of trees surrounding us. We have a trio of Pekin Bantams living in the garden, you can see us
