Children’s charity
shop vandalised for
seventh time
Volunteers at a
Cornwall charity shop
for young people with
cancer are “disgusted”
after vandals targeted
it twice in one week,
causing thousands of
pounds of damage.
The latest damage
to the roof is the
seventh time the
CLIC Sargent charity
shop in Saltash has
been targeted in the
last year-and-a-half.
It means the charity
will have to spend
thousands of pounds
on repairs which
would otherwise go
towards the cost of
accommodation for
parents while their
children are away in
hospital.
This comes only two
weeks after thieves
stole donations left in
the shop’s doorway in
broad daylight, before
driving off in a white
van. That was the
latest in a long string
of thefts.
Shaun Hutchings
from CLIC Sargent
told us how frustrated
volunteers were.
Family ‘threatened with
eviction’ for not paying
bedroom tax on toilet
A Cornwall father who converted a bedroom into a toilet to help his
seriously ill son says his family have been threatened with eviction
for refusing to pay the bedroom tax on it. Mike Paddington had
permission to convert the bedroom after his 33-year-old son, who
has been severely disabled since he was a baby, contracted a lifethreatening illness last year. He installed the separate toilet and
wash basin for his son’s carers and the rest of the family to reduce
the risk of infection, in accordance with the law. However his
Cornish housing association landlords say the toilet should still be
classed as a bedroom - leaving the family liable for an extra £700 in
rent a year. Coastline Housing Association said they agreed to the
conversion but added in a statement:
“Where a reasonable request is made for an adaptation to a property
by a customer, such as adding a toilet and sink to a room, making it
similar to an en-suite, Coastline would usually approve this, but it
will not affect either the number of bedrooms or the rent”.
Mike claims a Coastline representative said they would take drastic
action if he didn’t pay the tax and that an eviction order would be
sent. Coastline said there was no imminent threat of eviction.

April
Sunshine and showers
Spring is finally in evidence as daffodils
and flowering trees start to bloom. Expect
the inevitable April showers this month but
with sunny days too, when you can turn your
attention to the lawn. It's an exciting month,
with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and
it's also time to start sowing outdoors. Just
watch out for frosts...
Lawns
Mow lawns when necessary - whenever the
grass is growing - the aim is to maintain a
constant height throughout the year.
Add the clippings to the compost heap in thin
layers (too much grass all at once is likely to
be very wet and poorly aerated, resulting in
smelly slime rather than compost).
Use a half-moon edging iron or spade to
create a 7.5cm (3in) ‘gutter’ around the lawn
edge. This will prevent grass creeping from
the lawn into borders.
Sowing new lawns or over-seeding dead
patches can be carried out from mid-April
to early May. If the soil is very wet or cold
germination will be poor, so delay until the
weather improves. Prepare the ground for
sowing, by cultivating, levelling and lightly
firming beforehand.
Do not walk over or
mow newly sown
grass until it has
reached a height of
5-7.5cm (2-3in), and
then only give it a
light trim at the
highest setting.
Apply a high nitrogen
spring lawn fertiliser
at the beginning of the
month to encourage
good, strong growth.
If moss is a problem
choose a combined
fertiliser and mosskiller. April is the best
month to apply lawn weedkiller.
Always follow instructions on the packaging
very carefully as lawn chemicals (including
fertilisers, weedkillers and mosskillers)
can cause pollution of groundwater if used
incorrectly.
Lightly rake lawns with a spring-tine rake
to remove old plant debris. This can also be
done to rake out dead moss a couple of weeks
after applying a chemical moss killer.
Repair bumps and hollows by peeling back
the turf, removing or adding soil, and then
replacing the turf. It is still a good time to
sow a wildflower meadow, or plant
wildflower plugs into existing swards.
If a hosepipe ban is looking likely, consider
keeping your lawn a little longer than usual,
and even investing in a mulching mower.
Mulching mowers shred the grass clippings
very finely and then blow them into the lower
layers of the turf, where they act like mulch
to help the lawn retain moisture. Because
the clippings are fine, the end result is not
unsightly, especially later in the season when
the lawn gets very dry, and the mulch helps to
keep it green rather than brown.

GO Green
Why Go Green? Reasons that Going Green makes sense
There is a variety of reasons to go green,
but most come back to supply and
demand. We have a limited amount of
resources available and more and more
people using them up. If we want our
future generations to enjoy the same
standard of living we’ve experienced, we
need to take action.
Green building is a great place to start, as
buildings consume 14% of potable water,
40% of raw materials, and 39% of energy
in the United States alone (according to
the US Green Building Council).
That’s 15 trillion gallons of water and 3
billion tons of raw materials each year!
If that’s not enough to convince you,
here are some other reasons to
go green:
For The Environment
Want to make the world a better place?
Implementing green practices into your
home or office can help reduce waste,
conserve natural resources, improve
both air and water quality, and protect
ecosystems and biodiversity.
For The Savings
Want to make your dollar go further?
Green systems and materials reduce energy
consumption, which in turn reduce your
energy bills. They also increase asset value
and profits and decrease marketing time;
making your dollar go further for longer.
For Your Health
Want to live healthier?
Green building isn’t just good for the
environment; it’s also good for YOU.
Sustainable design and technology
enhance a resident’s overall quality of
life by improving air and water quality
and reducing noise pollution. According
to a 2006 study by the Center of the Built
Environment, University of California,
green office buildings improve productivity
and employee satisfaction in the workplace.

We’ll ensure memories of your special
day last forever!
Jan Suchacki is a professional photographer with
many years experience. He is based in Somerset
and covers the whole of the South West,
offering high quality work at highly competitive
packages. Jan is very friendly and relaxed, and
always open to new ideas, and if you’re one of
those who doesn’t like their photo taken you’re
in the right hands! In the end, it’s all about your
day, your way.
Jan’s aim is to work closely with you to ensure
his work perfectly preserves your special
memories, so that five, ten, twenty, thirty years
from now you will look at your photographs
and be instantly transported back to that magic
moment in time as if it happened only
yesterday.
Long after the cake has been eaten and the
flowers have disappeared, your photos will be
constantly there to bring back the magic. The
ceremony, the venue, the location, the time of
year, each will have its effect on the day, but,
more importantly for Jan, it’s the people who
make it memorable.
Jan said,
“ Weddings are without doubt happy days, even
for the photographer! I’m constantly amazed
at how, even after all this time and after lots of
weddings, I can still choke up!
Call me an old romantic, but there is something
special about weddings. The sense of occasion,
the start of a new life together for the couple,
the happy relatives beaming away, and
everyone dressed to the nines. And I always feel
privileged to be a part of it, even though I am
effectively a stranger to the family.
By the time the wedding is over and I’ve taken
hours upon hours working on the photoghraphs
afterwards, I feel I know everyone. I am blessed
that I enjoy my work so much, and a large part
of that is because your happy day makes me
happy, too. How many jobs can you say that
about?”
Moments in Time Wedding Photography are your
first choice! Jan’s packages start at just £495 and
all of them include a luxury 90-page album in
a presentation box completely free! So for high
quality, professional wedding photography you
can admire for years to come, let Moments in
Time capture your special day and ensure those
precious memories last for all time!

Joan Pressley Hats was established in 1987.
The inspiration for the business came after Joan
stumbled across a hat shop in London, all those
years ago. She bought her first hats, posted an ad in
the local paper on the Tuesday and by the Thursday
she had her first hat hire.
Joan now runs the business, with her daughter
Kathryn, from the beautiful 1550’s building
in St Johns Alley, Devizes. Joan’s hats can be
bought or hired. They can be re-trimmed to
match an outfit and are ideal for weddings, races,
investitures and many other occasions.

Best of British
Great
Britain
has it all!
The earth is chock full of beautiful places
and Britain is certainly one of them.
Renowned for its terrain, Britain easily
switches between rolling countryside,
energetic cities and even dramatic
coastlines. Wherever you go, there’s plenty
to see and do, with something to meet all
tastes and budgets. See animals up close
and buy fresh produce from farms, spend
a short break at one of Britain’s beaches,
buy the latest fashion trends from London,
tour the famous landmarks or top up your
cultural knowledge with visits to museums,
art galleries, and theatre productions. For
such a small island, Great Britain also has
a fantastically diverse culture, which lends
itself well to cuisine. From traditional
English meals such as the Sunday Roast,
the full English breakfast and fish and
chips, to nation favourites such as Indian
cuisine, Chinese cuisine and deliciously
exotic dishes – you’ll be spoilt for choice.
From stunning culture filled cities, ancient
and historical ruins, sandy seaside resorts
and remote, rural hideaways, Britain really
does have it all!

Inspired by Britain past and present
A small enterprise
based in Norfolk,
Retrology Gifts
is home to a
staggeringly
extensive range of
earrings, pendants,
rings, brooches, hair accessories, keyrings,
bracelets and mobile phone charms.
With all accessories and gifts inspired by
Britain’s history, there really is something
to suit all tastes. Whether you’re drawn to
the Stone Age, you’ve got a passion for the
Tudors or you simply want something to
remind you of your childhood, Retrology
Gifts has it all.
“I personally design and hand craft all of
the items I sell from Polymer clay. Due to
the handmade nature, each and every item
is unique and to some degree, one-of-akind,” owner Vanessa Aldridge told the West
Country Advertiser.
“I have also recently had my hallmark
registered and plan to expand with my own
range of silver charms in the new year too.”
Beginning life as Vangar-Emporium in
2005, Vanessa re-launched the business as
Retrology Gifts following a break.
“It’s more of a hobby for me,” Vanessa
explained. “I started making these items
around 20 years ago and in 2005, decided
to start my own website, selling them.
Eventually – and after a difficult period – I
decided to re-launch it with a new lease
of life and purpose. I never intended to relaunch with a focus on re-creating Britain’s
unique heritage. That was actually my
daughter’s idea initially. I’ve always been a
very nostalgic person and I love history – the
theme just grew from there, it seemed to fit.”
At Retrology Gifts, the accessories available
span numerous centuries and include the
Stone Age, the Middle Ages, the Tudors,
the Victorian era and both the early and late
20th century. Whether it’s a little keepsake
for yourself or a treat for a loved one, there
are plenty of ideas to choose from. Want to
remember a favourite board game from your
childhood? Revisit a special and memorable
location? Perhaps you’re a collector of all that
is retro and would like to add another vintage
item to your collection? The product range is
constantly being expanded, but if you can’t
see what you’re looking for, Vanessa is open
to ideas and discussions.
“I can’t promise anything, but I’ll certainly
give it a go! I can also personalise something
if required for an extra special touch –
especially if it’s a gift for a special occasion.”
Vanessa is able to personalise some items
with names and has a range of Lexicon Card
necklaces and bracelets (Lexicon is an old
card game with the letters of the alphabet.
A game with a resemblance to Scrabble) to
personalise with a name or message. She also
has a wide range of colours to choose from
and for those looking to buy a vinyl record,
she can even customise the record label!

Spring Motoring
After the long winter, Spring is the time to
give your car a thorough clean.
The underside of the car takes the worst of
the winter weather. If you're one of those
people who clean the car only once a year,
"whether it needs it or not", then now's the
best time to do it. After months of winter
neglect a thorough clean will help to maintain
the car's value and reduce the risk of longterm corrosion damage.
The inside of the car could have remained
damp all through winter while the underside
is likely to be caked in salt laden mud which
will cause corrosion if left.
Before the start of any long journey and
ideally every week check the engine oil level,
radiator coolant level, windscreen washer
level and tyre pressures, including the spare.
The vehicle handbook should show you
clearly how to do all of these.
Ten minutes or so spent carrying out a few
basic checks could make sure you reach
your destination as planned and not delayed
because of a breakdown.
