The latest damage to the roof is the seventh time the CLIC Sargent charity shop in Saltash has been targeted in the last year-and-a-half. It means the charity will have to spend thousands of pounds on repairs which would otherwise go towards the cost of accommodation for parents while their children are away in hospital. This comes only two weeks after thieves stole donations left in the shop’s doorway in broad daylight, before driving off in a white van. That was the latest in a long string of thefts. Shaun Hutchings from CLIC Sargent told us how frustrated volunteers were. Family ‘threatened with eviction’ for not paying bedroom tax on toilet A Cornwall father who converted a bedroom into a toilet to help his seriously ill son says his family have been threatened with eviction for refusing to pay the bedroom tax on it. Mike Paddington had permission to convert the bedroom after his 33-year-old son, who has been severely disabled since he was a baby, contracted a lifethreatening illness last year. He installed the separate toilet and wash basin for his son’s carers and the rest of the family to reduce the risk of infection, in accordance with the law. However his Cornish housing association landlords say the toilet should still be classed as a bedroom - leaving the family liable for an extra £700 in rent a year. Coastline Housing Association said they agreed to the conversion but added in a statement: “Where a reasonable request is made for an adaptation to a property by a customer, such as adding a toilet and sink to a room, making it similar to an en-suite, Coastline would usually approve this, but it will not affect either the number of bedrooms or the rent”. Mike claims a Coastline representative said they would take drastic action if he didn’t pay the tax and that an eviction order would be sent. Coastline said there was no imminent threat of eviction. West Country Advertiser Issue 36 Beautiful Homes Jobs to do in the garden this weekend Top 10 jobs to do this month 1: Keep weeds under control 2: Protect fruit blossom from late frosts 3: Tie in climbing and rambling roses 4: Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds 5: Start to feed citrus plants 6: Increase the water given to houseplants 7: Feed hungry shrubs and roses 8: Sow new lawns or repair bare patches 9: Prune fig trees 10: Divide bamboos and waterlilies April Sunshine and showers Spring is finally in evidence as daffodils and flowering trees start to bloom. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn. It's an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and it's also time to start sowing outdoors. Just watch out for frosts... Lawns Mow lawns when necessary - whenever the grass is growing - the aim is to maintain a constant height throughout the year. Add the clippings to the compost heap in thin layers (too much grass all at once is likely to be very wet and poorly aerated, resulting in smelly slime rather than compost). Use a half-moon edging iron or spade to create a 7.5cm (3in) ‘gutter’ around the lawn edge. This will prevent grass creeping from the lawn into borders. Sowing new lawns or over-seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April to early May. If the soil is very wet or cold germination will be poor, so delay until the weather improves. Prepare the ground for sowing, by cultivating, levelling and lightly firming beforehand. Do not walk over or mow newly sown grass until it has reached a height of 5-7.5cm (2-3in), and then only give it a light trim at the highest setting. Apply a high nitrogen spring lawn fertiliser at the beginning of the month to encourage good, strong growth. If moss is a problem choose a combined fertiliser and mosskiller. April is the best month to apply lawn weedkiller. Always follow instructions on the packaging very carefully as lawn chemicals (including fertilisers, weedkillers and mosskillers) can cause pollution of groundwater if used incorrectly. Lightly rake lawns with a spring-tine rake to remove old plant debris. This can also be done to rake out dead moss a couple of weeks after applying a chemical moss killer. Repair bumps and hollows by peeling back the turf, removing or adding soil, and then replacing the turf. It is still a good time to sow a wildflower meadow, or plant wildflower plugs into existing swards. If a hosepipe ban is looking likely, consider keeping your lawn a little longer than usual, and even investing in a mulching mower. Mulching mowers shred the grass clippings very finely and then blow them into the lower layers of the turf, where they act like mulch to help the lawn retain moisture. Because the clippings are fine, the end result is not unsightly, especially later in the season when the lawn gets very dry, and the mulch helps to keep it green rather than brown. Reasons that Going Green makes sense There is a variety of reasons to go green, but most come back to supply and demand. We have a limited amount of resources available and more and more people using them up. If we want our future generations to enjoy the same standard of living we’ve experienced, we need to take action. Green building is a great place to start, as buildings consume 14% of potable water, 40% of raw materials, and 39% of energy in the United States alone (according to the US Green Building Council). That’s 15 trillion gallons of water and 3 billion tons of raw materials each year! If that’s not enough to convince you, here are some other reasons to go green: For The Environment Want to make the world a better place? Implementing green practices into your home or office can help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, improve both air and water quality, and protect ecosystems and biodiversity. For The Savings Want to make your dollar go further? Green systems and materials reduce energy consumption, which in turn reduce your energy bills. They also increase asset value and profits and decrease marketing time; making your dollar go further for longer. For Your Health Want to live healthier? Green building isn’t just good for the environment; it’s also good for YOU. Sustainable design and technology enhance a resident’s overall quality of life by improving air and water quality and reducing noise pollution. According to a 2006 study by the Center of the Built Environment, University of California, green office buildings improve productivity and employee satisfaction in the workplace. Call me an old romantic, but there is something special about weddings. The sense of occasion, the start of a new life together for the couple, the happy relatives beaming away, and everyone dressed to the nines. And I always feel privileged to be a part of it, even though I am effectively a stranger to the family. By the time the wedding is over and I’ve taken hours upon hours working on the photoghraphs afterwards, I feel I know everyone. Eventually – and after a difficult period – I decided to re-launch it with a new lease of life and purpose. I never intended to relaunch with a focus on re-creating Britain’s unique heritage. That was actually my daughter’s idea initially. I’ve always been a very nostalgic person and I love history – the theme just grew from there, it seemed to fit.” At Retrology Gifts, the accessories available span numerous centuries and include the Stone Age, the Middle Ages, the Tudors, the Victorian era and both the early and late 20th century. Page 15 Spring Motoring After the long winter, Spring is the time to give your car a thorough clean. The underside of the car takes the worst of the winter weather. If you're one of those people who clean the car only once a year, "whether it needs it or not", then now's the best time to do it. After months of winter neglect a thorough clean will help to maintain the car's value and reduce the risk of longterm corrosion damage. The inside of the car could have remained damp all through winter while the underside is likely to be caked in salt laden mud which will cause corrosion if left. Before the start of any long journey and ideally every week check the engine oil level, radiator coolant level, windscreen washer level and tyre pressures, including the spare. The vehicle handbook should show you clearly how to do all of these. Ten minutes or so spent carrying out a few basic checks could make sure you reach your destination as planned and not delayed because of a breakdown. MANNING MOTORS 10/1E Alexandria Ind.
