Semesterstart
Neste uke begynner høstsemesteret med sine ulike aktiviteter. Det er
bachelormottak, mastermottak, fadderuke og HMS-kurs, grilling og andre ting.
Mange er i aktivitet for å ta i mot de nye studentene og få dem til å føle seg
velkomne. Her er det viktig både å være inkluderende og gjøre klart hvilke
forventninger som stilles.
BIO ønsker å starte semesteret med fokus på den gode undervisningen, og
arrangerer derfor høstens første BIO-seminar fredag 16. august kl. 12.15-14.00
med tema undervisning. Her får vi bl. a. høre professor Harald Kryvi dele sine
erfaringer gjennom 44 år med universitetsundervisning. Kryvi fikk Meltzer-prisen for
fremragende formidling i 2012, og er en kjær og skattet foreleser blant studentene.
Dessuten skal vi diskutere utviklingen innenfor digitalisering av undervisning og
høre om studenthverdagen. Seminaret foregår i auditoriet på VilVite og er åpent for
alle interesserte.
Etter undervisningsseminaret drar vi med buss til Espegrend for sosiale utfordringer
under Espegrend-lekene 2013. Her blir det mye moro, og pizza. Hvis du ikke har
meldt deg på ennå, er påmeldingen åpen til tirsdag 13. august.

Neste del 1 kurs i forsøksdyrlære er 4 og 5 september, med lesedag 9 september og eksamen 10
september. Dette til info i tilfelle dere har nye prosjektmedarbeidere som skal arbeide med forsøksdyr.
Påmelding
Neste mulighet er i januar 2014. Neste del 2 av kurset går i juni 2014. Nye prosjektmedarbeidere bør
ta del 1 av kurset snarest mulig, og også melde seg på til del 2.
Merk at masterstudenter trenger normalt kun del 1 av kurset, men dersom dere vil at de skal arbeide
selvstendig med dyrene uten at veileder behøver være med hver gang, må de også ta del 2 av kurset.
Allergiforebygging
Nye medarbeidere som skal arbeide med pelsbærende dyr må innlemmes i UiBs helseprogram for

Couse in lab animal science
The next part 1 of the course in lab animal science is September 4 and 5, with study day Sept. 9th,
and exam Sept.10th.
This for your information in case you have new project group members who will be working with lab
animals.
Registration
The next possibility is in January 2014. Next part 2 of the course is in June 2014 New project
members should do part 1 of the course as soon as possible, and also register for part 2 of the course.

Note that master students normally only need part 1 of the course, but if you want them to be allowed
to work independently with the animals, without the supervisor present, they also need part 2.
Health monitoring
All project members who will be working with fur bearing animals, must be enrolled in the UiB health
monitoring program, concerning allergies. More info

Eli Neshavn Høie, seksjonssjef for studieseksjonen ved MatNat, skriver at de er klar for ny innsats og
er langt inn i forberedelser i forbindelse med mottaket neste uke. Det blir garantert høy aktivitet neste
uke med mange studenter som vil begynne her hos oss! Mottaket på mandag morgen (12.8.13) blir i
gamle FORUM kino på Danmarksplass (Grieghallen er under oppussing). De skal merke godt slik at
studentene finner veien til klassemottaket.
Hun sender ut også resultatet av hovedopptaket.

A new study, covered by the BBC News and published by Salvanes et al. in the Proceedings of the
Royal Society B shows that salmon growing in a stimulating environment become smarter. Read more

The importance of sexual reproduction in animals brought into question
Andreas Hejnol group at Sars Centre has been involved in research on the the genome of the bdelloid
rotifer Adineta vaga which was recently published in Nature: “Genomic evidence for ameiotic evolution
in the bdelloid rotifer Adineta vaga”, Jean--‐François Flot et al., Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature12326”

New global plankton atlas (MAREDAT) in "Earth System Science Data (ESSD
An international team of researchers from more than 80 oceanographic institutions and marine
laboratories across 19 countries has produced the first global atlas of marine plankton. They have
made the atlas freely available through the open access "Earth System Science Data" journal.
The new MAREDAT (Marine Ecosystem Data, an essential element of the Marine Ecosystem Model
Inter-comparison Project, MAREMIP) atlas covers 11 types of plankton, ranging in size from bacteria
to jellyfish. Link to online library
Fish larvae: state-of-the-art knowledge on Open Access for producers, scientists and
managers
A new open-access resource is available for producers, managers and scientists in aquaculture,
fisheries and even evolutionary science.
This is a result of the LARVANET (COST- action FA-801) involving Europe's foremost fish larval
experts on the basis for seafood production. A series of 8 state-of-the-art reviews are published as an
open access supplementary section of Reviews in Aquaculture These reviews cover broodstock,
gamete quality, microbiology, skeletal development and abnormalities, digestion and nutrition, growth
potential and juvenile quality as well as the importance of the inherent plasticity of fishes to
aquaculture and fisheries.

Free Access to ScienceDirect for Early Career Researchers
I am delighted to announce that we will soon be repeating the Postdoc Free Access to ScienceDirect
initiative, which we successfully piloted last year. The initiative is designed to help early career
researchers who do not currently have a research position to stay up-to-date in their field. For scholars
who have recently received their PhD and currently do not have a research position, the program will
offer postdocs a Free Access Passport, with complimentary access to all journals and books on
ScienceDirect for 6 months.
During the pilot in 2012, we granted free ScienceDirect access to 64 individuals out of 176 applicants.
Applications came from all parts of the world, but mostly from Asia (40%) and Europe (34%). All areas
of science were represented, but the majority of applicants were in the life and physical sciences. See

Based on feedback received last time, this year we have relaxed the criteria and will now also allow
PhD graduates without postdoc experience to apply. Furthermore, we will extend the application
period from 6 weeks to 3 months. The applications will be reviewed by Elsevier, and once the
application has been reviewed and approval is granted, they will receive a "passport" that includes an
individual access code.
In order to qualify for the Free Access Passport, starting 3 June 2013 candidates can apply online and
complete a form to verify their credentials, before 31 August 2013. Once approved, they will receive a
personal code allowing access to ScienceDirect.
Qualifying criteria include:

Must be a postdoctoral researcher who has received a PhD (or equivalent) within in the past 5
years

Must have completed your last research position (either your PhD research or a postdoc or
equivalent) on or after 31 December 2012 or have a position that will be completed before
31st August 2013.

Semesteret starter neste uke med mottak av nye studenter til Universitetet. BIO tar i år mot store kull
med bachelor-, profesjons- og masterstudenter. 1-årsstudentene blir tatt i med klassemottak og
programmøter mandag til onsdag, og nye masterstudenter ønskes velkommen onsdag og torsdag.
Tallet på utvekslingsstudenter er også svært høyt i år.

Den nye utlysningen av SFI er endelig kommet..
Forskningsrådet lyser nå ut midler til nye Sentre for forskningsdrevet innovasjon (SFI). Ambisjonen er
å starte opp inntil 14 nye sentre i 2015. Første fase av søknadsprosessen er en obligatorisk
skisserunde (frist 2. oktober 2013 kl. 13.00). Skissen skal følge ”Mal for obligatorisk skisse til søknad
om Senter for forskningsdrevet innovasjon (SFI-III)”. Skissen kan skrives på norsk eller engelsk.

SIU_UTFORSK
UTFORSK is a new Norwegian instrument for strengthening the linkage between higher education and
research in international collaboration, and to increase cooperation between Norway and Brazil,
China, India, Japan, Russia and South Africa.
SIU invites Norwegian higher education institutions to apply for funding of cooperation projects with
partner institutions in Brazil, China, India, Japan, Russia and South Africa.
Application deadline: 09.10.2013
Support may be given to joint activities, such as:
 Student and staff mobility (including student internships or work placements)
 Intensive courses
 Joint seminars, workshops and similar activities involving both researchers and students from
participating institutions
 Development of joint courses, study programmes or degrees
 Joint teaching and supervision
 Students’ participation in research activities/projects
A total of NOK 8 million is available through this call. Each project may apply for up to NOK 1,5 million

Invitation to join the Norwegian node of EMBRC, the European Marine Biology Resource
Centre
As founding partners of EMBRC and active contributors to its preparatory phase supported by EU FP7
since 2011, the Sars Centre and the Department of Biology at UiB would like to invite you to the first
meeting aimed at building the Norwegian node of EMBRC. The proposed date for the meeting is:

Seminar om lakselus torsdag 12. september i Bergen, arrangert av Sea Lice Research
Centre (SLRC).
Hovedtema for seminaret er å belyse noe av arbeidet med lakselus som foregår i SLRC, med særlig
relevans for næring og forvaltning. Vi har satt sammen et program som belyser ny kunnskap om
lakselus samt noen av utfordringene man har med lakselus. Seminaret vil også være en god
anledning til å komme med innspill på viktige tema som krever ytterligere forskningsaktivitet fremover.

Seminar on Sea Lice 12 September 2013 in Bergen, arranged by Sea Lice Research Centre
(SLRC)
The main subject for the seminar is to present some of the work in SLRC. The seminar should be
relevant for industry and public administration as well as research organisations. We have made a
program with focus on new knowledge on sea lice – together with some of the challenges. We also
hope the seminar will be an opportunity to give input to some of the important future research areas.

1st Announcement International Ocean Research Conference
The 2nd INTERNATIONAL OCEAN RESEARCH CONFERENCE, will be held on the 17-21 of
November 2014 in Barcelona (Spain). The conference is sponsored by the Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) and The Oceanographic Society (TOS) with the

Aquatic Microbial Ecology Summer school - Nha Trang, Vietnam October 2013
The first summer School ASIAME " South East Asia Workshop in Aquatic Microbial Ecology", will be
held in Nha Trang, Vietnam at the Institute of Oceanography (IO) between October 7 and 16, 2013.
Aquatic Microbial Ecology has undergone tremendous evolution in the last two decades. Mastering
concepts and methods, especially those based on molecular biology approaches, is critical for
successful management of coastal and marine areas, particularly in fields such as red tide control,
biogeochemical cycles, aquaculture, and marine biotechnology. Understanding microbial diversity,
their roles, interactions and capacities for adaptation are keys to anticipating the effects of use of
aquatic systems.
ASIAME aims is to bring together scientists, post-graduates, and graduate students in order to
exchange the most advanced knowledge and methods in aquatic microbiology through scientific
lectures and practical training. Applicants form South East Asian countries will be selected according
to their academic needs and potential for achievement reflected in their application proposal.
Accommodation and travel costs will be covered by ASIAME for selected applicants.

Abstract
Foraging processes in plankton and planktivorous fish are constrained by relative prey and predator
size and therefore, these are important variables to include in a foraging model. The distribution of
prey biomass across different size classes can be characterized by a size spectrum slope. We present
a foraging model for anchovy larvae including the most relevant processes such as prey encounter,
capture- and pursuit success, all influenced by light, turbulence and prey characteristics. We modelled
ingestion rates and specific growth rate by coupling the foraging model with an existing bioenergetic
model, and performed a sensitivity analysis of prey ingestion in turbulent environments assuming
either hemispherical or conical perceptive volume. Our results suggest that turbulence has no positive
effect because of the low capture ability, small prey size and small visual volume for anchovy larvae.
The predicted ingestion is too low to sustain the growth potential of larvae when assuming conical
perceptive volume even under prey densities substantially higher than normally found in the field.
Ingestion rate is sensitive to the total biomass and the slope of the prey size spectra, specifically
because it determines the abundance of prey around the optimal size for the larvae. The model also
suggests that small larvae benefit from a prey size structure with steep prey size-spectra slope while a
large larva benefit from less steep slopes. The model can act as a link between size-spectra
measurements from the field and the foraging conditions of larval anchovies.
