Families get together for reunions, or pack up for a fun weekend trip or maybe even make plans to get away for an extended period of time for a welldeserved vacation. These are all good things to do. But I know from experience, that when we plan to be away for awhile, we must make arrangements for things to be taken care of while we are gone. Although the church doesn’t “go on vacation” the people that “are” the Church do. Many ministers are unavailable during the summer and we often have positions that need to be filled. As we approach summer and vacation times, I do want to again stress the importance for liturgical ministers to serve at your assigned time, or get a substitute. Finding a substitute can be done from your smartphone and can be as easy as clicking an app. Contact Cheryl Shaffer at 702-804-8311 or [email protected] if you have any questions. You may think we will never miss you, but we do. Your ministry makes a difference! Thank you to all the Parishioners who volunteer their time and talents to lend a hand at our weekend liturgies. May God bless you. Yours in Christ, Fr. Bede Wevita, Pastor New Summer Hours From Memorial Day to August 14th the parish office will be open Monday thru Thursday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (closed from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.) This tiny seed, which fits in the palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawling branches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church, which began with about 120 followers, added three thousand people on Pentecost Day following the descent of the Holy Spirit. Since then, the number of Christ’s disciples has grown incalculably and continues to grow throughout the world. Good stewards go about God’s business of “planting seeds” among all those they encounter. What will we do this week to add to God’s kingdom? June 14, 2015 -4- The Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time Parish Office 702-228-8311 Catechetical Corner Display of Flags in Catholic Churches Surprisingly to many, there are no regulations of any kind governing the display of flags in Roman Catholic churches. Neither the Code of Canon Law nor the liturgical books of the Roman rite comment on this practice. As a result, the question of whether and how to display the American flag in a Catholic church is left up to the judgment of the diocesan bishop, who in turn often delegates this to the discretion of the pastor. The origin of the display of the American flag in many parishes in the United States appears have its origins in the offering of prayers for those who served during the Second World War (1941-1945). At that time, many bishops and pastors provided a book of remembrance near the American flag, requesting prayers for loved ones—especially those serving their country in the armed forces—as a way of keeping before the attention of the faithful the needs of military families. This practice has since been confirmed in many places during the Korean, Vietnam, and Iraqi conflicts. The Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church The Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy has in the past encouraged pastors not to place the flag within the sanctuary itself, in order to reserve that space for the altar, the ambo, the presidential chair, and the tabernacle. Instead, the suggestion has been made that the American flag be placed outside the sanctuary, or in the vestibule of the church together with a book of prayer requests. It remains, however, for the diocesan bishop to determine regulations in this matter. Photo: CNS/Paul Haring Copyright © 2015, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. His spiritual life deepened and he joined the Franciscan Third Order, giving up his painting. As Brother Albert, he aided those in need in Krakow, and in 1887 founded the Brothers of the Third Order of St. Francis, Servants of the Poor, known as the Albertines. Jesus must have gotten tired of trying to explain it, but he never gives up. In today’s passage, he uses parables to describe how the kingdom will spread. What is interesting is that these parables are not so much about our actions as they are about how God builds his kingdom. Let’s start with the second parable: Jesus exaggerates a little, with the mustard seed being the smallest seed and the bush being the largest plant. His point is that the kingdom may look small at first, but it will keep growing. The image of all the birds coming to the branches is taken from Old Testament passages, in Daniel and Ezekiel, about other people coming into Jerusalem to worship the one LORD. Jesus implies that the growing kingdom will attract outsiders to be members. The main point is not to be discouraged when it seems the kingdom is not growing: We might be limiting it to people who think and act just like ourselves. We might see attendance at church in our parish declining. So Jesus is reminding us to think of the bigger picture. In the first parable about the man who scattered seeds, Jesus says that those seeds produce a harvest, even though the farmer doesn’t know how or why those seeds can grow. We too can be doing things that help the Kingdom to grow, without knowing how we are helping. The obvious example is prayer: We may not see the results of our prayer, or not know if God is answering our prayer. But God is making the kingdom grow in his own way and in his own time. Like the farmer, we can help it grow by loving each other, teaching our children about Jesus, caring for the poor and the sick. If the farmer were to let weeds choke his crop, or be stingy with his seeds, he might not have a very good harvest. We can be stingy with our love, or hurt people with our anger. Then we would be slowing the growth of the kingdom. So let us always be aware of the kingdom, and ask God to move us to do whatever we can to help it grow. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. June 14, 2015 -6- The Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time Parish Office 702-228-8311 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church Fact of Faith Things You Won’t See At A Catholic Wedding by Rev. Larry Rice, CSP There are few events in life that are as steeped in tradition as a wedding. And the traditions surrounding weddings come to us through our families, our friends, our culture, and our religious traditions. But every religious tradition handles weddings differently, and some of the things that people expect to see and hear, are often not part of the Catholic way of celebrating weddings. For example, in some traditions, at the conclusion of the procession into the church, the presiding minister may ask, “Who gives this woman to be married?” And the father of the bride will be expected to respond that he, or he and his wife, do. At Catholic weddings, it’s presumed that the bride—and the groom for that matter—give themselves to each other. If you’ve ever seen a wedding on a television series, you’re probably familiar with the dramatic possibilities that arise when the minister asks, “If anyone knows any reason why these two should not be wed, let him speak now, or forever hold his peace.” Well, we Catholics don’t do that. In many places, notices of upcoming weddings are published, allowing anyone with objections to come forward before the couple gets to the altar. Another touching moment in most TV weddings is the phrase, “With this ring, I thee wed.” For us Catholics, the moment of the marriage is the exchange of consent, and the speaking of the vows. The ring is a symbol of the union that has already taken place. We bless wedding rings, and they are exchanged with the phrase, “Take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Another thing we don’t say at Catholic weddings is “I now pronounce you man and wife.” We believe that the couple becomes husband and wife not The Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time -7- because the minister declares them to be such, but because they have given their consent and made their vows to each other. The function of the priest or deacon is to preside and witness these vows, not to make the marriage happen. Through all of the ceremony, the emphasis is on what the bride and groom do, and not on anyone else. This celebration of love and unity mirrors the love of God for his people, and should inspire all of us to be more loving, more committed people. June 14, 2015 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church 702-228-8311 Parish Office Stewardship Stewardship Saint for June known as a great stewardship saint. St. Anthony was born on the Feast of the Assumption in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 to a wealthy and educated family of the Portuguese nobility. He entered the Augustinian religious community at an early age where he devoted himself to the study of sacred scripture and Latin classics. St. Anthony of Padua is one of the most beloved and admired saints in the church. Because he was a prolific preacher and witness to the Gospel in his personal life, he is He joined the Franciscan Order when he was 26 years old and traveled tirelessly to preach what it meant to live according to the Gospel. He is believed to have made as many as 400 trips to towns in both northern Italy and southern France. St. Anthony knew that preaching was not enough to help people understand how to live according to the Gospel. He believed he had to give witness to the Gospel by the way he lived his personal life. He adopted and maintained a simple lifestyle consistent with what he believed the Gospel was calling him to. St. Anthony died in Padua, Italy, on June 13, 1231 at the age of 36. He was proclaimed a saint less than one year after his death. So simple, yet compelling and inspiring was St. Anthony’s teaching of the Catholic faith that he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Best known for his patronage of seekers of lost items, St. Anthony is commonly referred to today as the “finder of lost articles.” Few people know that he is the patron of many other causes including the poor and those who travel. His feast day is June 13. A Special Message for Summer Travelers Would you find it helpful to have your offerings debited directly from your bank account as you probably do with other obligations?
