“ OUR FUTURE IS

AND I THANK YOU
FOR SHARING YOUR
FAMILY WITH US.”
—DR. JAMES A. THOMAS
Dear Columbia Academy family,
It’s hard to believe that another school year has begun, but there is always an excitement
in the air that surrounds the beginning of each school year. Each fall brings new faces,
new friendships, and new opportunities for our staff and faculty to influence the lives of
the young people that walk these halls. As Columbia Academy begins its 35th year,
I see that commitment to “Christian education in a tradition of excellence” remains as
strong as ever.
As this issue of the Communicator recaps some of the exciting things that have
happened at Columbia Academy in the past year, I think about growth and progress.
Our campus has grown tremendously with the opening of the Anderson Fieldhouse;
a place where students will learn, grow, and be challenged to be their best.
Academically, we have grown – with rising standardized test scores to reflect our
growth, but also with new teachers who are highly qualified and bring fresh ideas and
enthusiasm for teaching. This growth is also seen in new curriculum standards that
continue to challenge us to work harder, and in the increasing integration of technology
in our classrooms. Dual enrollment offerings in our Upper School have also grown so
that many graduates earn up to a semester’s worth of college credit before ever setting
foot on a college campus.
Columbia Academy continues to progress in other ways, as our endowment recently
surpassed the $2 million mark for the first time. Teacher salaries have been raised
significantly in an effort to offer our employees the very best opportunities and
environment in which to work. One way that we continue to stay competitive is by
capitalizing on the generosity of our supporters, who have brought us within
$1 million of the $10 million Vision 2020 Capital Campaign goal.
Finally, we are so encouraged each year as we watch our enrollment grow in response
to what our families value and come to enjoy as part of this school family. For the
first time in school history, our student body numbers more than 840 students and
counting. Part of that growth is fueled from the 95+ students at our Spring Hill satellite
campus, which is a major focus of our overall strategic plan for Columbia Academy’s
future. Our future is indeed bright, and I thank you for sharing your family with us as
we take this journey together.

DANIEL SMITH EARNS
BATTALION COMMANDER
AT THE CITADEL
Now entering his senior year at The Citadel, CA alumnus Cadet
Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Smith (’10) will assume the role of one
of five Battalion Commanders at the prestigious military college
in Charleston, S.C. In this role, Smith will be responsible for
leading approximately 450 cadets along with his role as company
honor representative. Smith credits his time at Columbia Academy
in preparing him for the servant leadership required in these
important roles at The Citadel.
“I learned service from CA and how to put others before myself in
nearly everything I do,” Smith said. “In doing so, I was prepared to
become a servant leader. CA made the development into a servant
leader quite easy.”
Smith also holds the honor of membership in the Summerall
Guards, an elite drill platoon of 61 senior cadets from The Citadel.
Smith is currently contracted with the U.S. Army as an ROTC
cadet and will commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army
upon graduation in 2014. Smith plans to pursue a military career
in combat arms.
“I feel like CA has enabled me to succeed at The Citadel,” Smith
said. “Furthermore, CA sent me off with a strong knowledge and
understanding of the scriptures and faith in the Lord. I’ve certainly
made mistakes as I’ve gone along, but the faith that I left CA with
has only grown stronger with the challenges I’ve faced.”

CA REACHES
RECORD
ENROLLMENT
FOR 2013-2014
During Fall 2013's first day of the Circle of Friends devotional at the
Lower School, hundreds of young voices come together to praise God
in songs led by Band Director Mark Donahoo.
F
or the 2013-2014 school year, Columbia Academy reports
a school record enrollment of 841 students with a total
of 152 new students in grades K - 12. This enrollment
breaks the previous record of 825 students enrolled more
than 10 years ago in 2001. Economic challenges over the years have
taxed many private schools nationwide, but President Dr. James
Thomas is encouraged by the continuing growth seen at Columbia
Academy over the past three years.
“Since 2010, we have seen a steady increase each year in enrollment
adding up to over 200 more students than we had three years ago,”
Thomas said. “Clearly, families who are seeking a private, Christian
education are finding a way to make it a priority in their budgets,
and we are thankful that many are choosing to be a part of our
school. We ultimately give the glory to God for helping us bounce
back from the recession in such an amazing way and we know our
school will be blessed by this growth for years to come.”
The growth is felt across the campus locations, Thomas said, from
the Columbia campus to the Spring Hill campus. Although new
students are represented across the grade levels, the Kindergarten
programs have grown substantially in Columbia and Spring
Hill where additional sections and teachers were added at both
locations. Also, the seventh grade class continues to grow and
is now up to 77 students – still the largest class of students in
Columbia Academy school history. To accommodate additional
students, new teachers and classroom space have been added at
both campuses.
“ Since 2010, we have seen a steady increase
each year in enrollment adding up to over 200
more students than we had three years ago.”
—CA President James Thomas
“While growth is exciting, we have to maintain our educational
quality and our low student teacher ratio, so doing that has been
priority number one,” Thomas said. “Another by-product of this
growth has been an increased racial and religious diversity among
our students. As a Christian institution first and foremost, we
want everyone to feel welcomed and loved here, and we work
intentionally to do that.”
This record enrollment growth comes on the heels of the opening
of the new Anderson Fieldhouse athletic facility, which opened in
January of 2013. Other factors which may have contributed to the
growth, Thomas said, also include the one-to-one iPad technology
initiative, the increase of college credit options for high school
students, rising college placement and TCAP scores, the Spring Hill
satellite campus, and improved extracurricular options for students
such as theatre and band.
“We are making it a priority to offer the very best resources that we
can to our student body,” Thomas said. “By reinvesting dollars from
new student growth into enhanced programs, faculty development
and training, and infrastructure, we hope that even more families
will continue to be attracted to what we can offer their children.”

SMALL CLASS,
BIG DREAMS
CLASS OF 2013 MAKES AN IMPACT
n the Columbia Academy graduating class of 2013, the
graduates collectively earned more than $800,000 in college
scholarships to attend colleges and universities across the
nation this fall. These scholarship dollars represent HOPE
scholarships, General Assembly Merit scholarships, academic, athletic
and merit scholarships from various schools. Of the graduating class,
all students are attending a two or four-year university this fall with
the exception of one graduate, who is joining the U.S. Marine Corp. substantial awards to a single school was a $90,000 scholarship to
Seth Johnston to attend Rhodes College in Memphis. Other notable accomplishments in the 2013 graduating class include:
18 students (66 percent) graduated with honors; six graduates scored
30 or higher on at least one section of the ACT; and 74 percent of
the class qualified for the HOPE scholarship, which requires a 21 or
higher on the ACT or a 3.0 GPA or higher.
“Although this is one of the smaller classes we have had in years,
these 29 students have made an amazing impact on our school,”
said Upper School Principal Jon Bennett. “We know they will take
that initiative and drive and go on to represent our school and their
families well in whatever endeavors they pursue.”
The majority of scholarship awards were presented to seniors
during their Awards Day ceremony, May 17, with the remaining
scholarships awarded on Graduation Day, May 18. Among the most

“ WE HOPE THAT MANY
YOUNG PEOPLE ARE
ATTRACTED TO CA
THROUGH THE USE OF
THESE FACILITIES...”
—TO M A N D E R S O N
O
n January 25, the day finally arrived to a packed
gymnasium and a long roster of guests that enjoyed
self guided tours of the 38,000 square facility during
the historic occasion.
The lead donor family and namesake for the beautiful new $6
million state-of-the-art athletic facility, Tom and Jade Anderson,
was there with family and friends to celebrate the special day with
the Columbia Academy family.
“Jade and I have long felt that in order to make an impact on
the church, the community and the world, it is important to
influence minds that are open and receptive - that means young
people,” Tom Anderson said. “We hope that many young people
are attracted to CA through the use of these facilities as well as all
of the other advantages that exist at CA - the dedicated faculty,
the innovative, technology driven teaching methods and most
importantly, the true concern of CA for its students.”
The Andersons have long had a passion for supporting Christian
education, particularly now more than ever, Anderson said, because
of the unfortunate negative influences that children often face in a
very connected world.
“The greatest impact we can have on the world is not to
revolutionize the mechanization of our world but to revolutionize
our commitment to God,” Anderson said. “We think Columbia
Academy has that positive effect in our community. Jade and I
have four grandchildren that we want to be subjected to that allimportant Christian education influence. Our grandchildren and
their commitment to God are worth all the money that we could
ever give.”
9
The love of the Anderson family was felt in the gift that helped
make the dream of the Anderson Fieldhouse a reality, said Dr.
James Thomas, President. Other Vision 2020 campaign lead donors
for the project have also been recognized (see Annual Giving
Report, p. 13-22) on custom plaques throughout the new facility.
“Words cannot adequately express the appreciation I have for
the Anderson family and for everyone who has made a gift to the
campaign,” said President Dr. James Thomas. “Numerous donors
have contributed to the Vision 2020 campaign, and without their
support, this would not have been possible. Lord willing, students
will benefit from all of these efforts for generations to come.”
Prior to the Grand Opening in January, Bulldog football fans
were able to enjoy several home games on the new “home side”
in the new stands that have a seating capacity for 1,200 fans and
152 chair back seats that are the same seats found in the Titans’
LP Field in Nashville. Basketball fans enjoyed the remainder of
their seasons in the new gymnasium beginning with a standing
room only crowd on the evening of the Grand Opening when the
Bulldogs played Culleoka High School.
“Students and fans alike will benefit from the safety and comfort
this building provides,” Thomas added. “The school and
community will also benefit from having a multi-use facility that
can host large events. We are very blessed to have one of the finest
athletic facilities in the area.”

HIGH
BAND HITS A
NOTE AT CA
Mark Donahoo directs the CA Lower School
band Christmas performance.
E
ver since CA Band Director
Mark Donahoo first picked up a
trumpet in the fourth grade, he
cultivated a love for band. While
still a student of the musical
craft in his home state of Illinois,
Donahoo competed in numerous group
and individual competitions. Since that
time, he has placed as a finalist in the
National Trumpet Competition and has
performed numerous times with the wind
symphony at many prestigious events
across the country. The current band program at CA begins
in fifth grade and continues through
12th grade. Recruiting students in the
younger grades, Donahoo said, is the key
to building success at the upper grade
levels. Currently, there are close to 50
students enrolled in band and Donahoo
anticipates many new students from
the fifth grade as well as students from
other grades who have not previously
participated. Although some students are
hesitant, the skills learned in band teach
important life lessons, Donahoo added.
His band teaching career began in
recent years at Cookeville High School
and before joining CA, he worked as a
substitute band director with schools in
Maury County. As the CA band program
grows, Donahoo is encouraged by the
enthusiasm of the band students and their
families. Private schools often struggle to
maintain a competitive band program,
Donahoo said, but the future looks bright
for the program at CA.
“Students should be introduced to band
because it is a program that reinforces
many good qualities that every student
should have,” Donahoo said. “The
discipline that it takes to learn an
instrument can be applied to so many
things outside of the classroom. Playing
in an ensemble lets students acquire the
skills to collaborate with others, joining
together in creating a unique art form.” “The band program here is growing,
and I am very excited to be a part of
it,” Donahoo said. “I am encouraged
every day because I have never seen a
parent community that cares so much
for the development of their students. I
look forward to the next year and years
to follow when we will be starting new
traditions, joining new competitions, and
developing a long lasting program.” 11
The band program also exposes students
to cultural experiences and opportunities
that enhance their overall learning
experience, Donahoo said. In the 20122013 school year, sixth grade band
students visited a live performance of the
Nashville Symphony. The high school
band performed at Dollywood in the
Performing Stars Program. Throughout
the year students took advantage of
many opportunities to compete locally
in different competitions like the Solo
and Ensemble Contest, Columbia State
Piano Competition, and Festival of
Winds. Students also performed in school
concerts and played with the Maury
County Community Band on campus.
“I plan to continue to prepare all of our
students to perform at their best, and
to compete if they have that desire,”
Donahoo said. “Band teaches confidence
and discipline, and the value of that
is priceless.”

COLUMBIA ACADEMY JR. HIGH GIRLS’ SOCCER TEAM SCORES RECORD
71 GOALS TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHILD FIGHTING CANCER
A
fter hearing the news that
young Gabbi Cook of
Columbia was fighting
a rare form of liver cancer called
Hepatoblastoma, students at Columbia
Academy wanted to find a way to assist
her family with expenses. Eighth grader
Anna Marie DeJarnette thought that
her Jr. High girls’ soccer team could
help the family with a fundraiser the
team calls “Goals 4 Gabbi.” At the
conclusion of the season, the team
scored a record 71 goals and raised close
to $10,000 to help the Cook family
with their expenses associated with
Gabbi’s treatment. Contributors gave a
pre-season pledge amount of money per
goal scored, explained Coach
Zach Kittrell.
“I’ve been coaching for years and have
never come close to seeing a team score
that many goals in one season - it’s
unheard of, “Kittrell said. “They only
allowed four goals and went undefeated.
Every girl on that team wanted to score
a goal for Gabbi.”
Gabbi and her parents Matt and Charla
Cook (‘00) were scheduled to return to
their mission field work in Peru after
the recent birth of their son. Their
plans changed after Gabbi’s diagnosis
and the treatment that followed at
Vanderbilt and the Children’s Hospital
of Pittsburgh where Gabbi recieved
a successful liver transplant. The
fundraiser enabled the family to afford
the medical and travel expenses they
incurred while in Pittsburgh.
“Words can’t express how much we
appreciate what the girls did through
the Goals 4 Gabbi project,” Cook said.
“It’s touching when people help, but it’s
extra touching when a group of junior
high girls put something together that is
so significant and helpful. These girls
are awesome.” As of August 19, 2013, the good news
for Gabbi and her family is that she is
doing well and is officially “cancer free,”
Cook said. Her liver transplant is still a
work in progress, but she is improving
steadily, he added, with energy and
enthusiasm for brighter and healthier
days ahead.
“ Every girl on that
team wanted to
score a goal for
Gabbi.”

Annual Giving Report 2013
Columbia Academy truly could not exist without the support of our donors. The following Annual
Giving Report is for the fiscal year ending May 31, 2013.
Here are some highlights from our 34th year:
• Students learned every day at the feet of Christian instructors
• The Bible was taught every day
• Students had opportunities to grow in a safe environment with personal attention
• Solid spiritual and academic foundations were laid for students that last a lifetime
God has blessed this work over the last 34 years, and we trust He will continue to bless us as we
try to serve Him by serving the students in our care. Thank you again for your contributions, and
we ask for your continued prayers for our students, our staff, and our school.
Leave a Legacy:
Join the CA Legacy Society
—
Since 1979, many incredible sacrifices have been made in order
for Columbia Academy to grow into the great institution that
it is today. The vision of our founders and leaders over the last
34 years has helped ensure CA’s stability and longevity. It is so
touching to hear how people sacrificed to send their children
to CA and now have the joy of seeing their grandchildren
attending CA! What a blessing – our God is so good!
These families now realize that while
they were sacrificing at the time, they
were actually making a significant
investment in their children’s future
and maybe even in their grandchildren’s
future. They had the vision to make
the short-term sacrifices that were
necessary in order to send their
children to a place where the Bible is
the primary textbook among the other amazing educational
resources we are able to offer.
We ask you to join this group of visionaries who have invested in
CA. What was formerly called the Foundation Society will now
be appropriately renamed The CA Legacy Society to recognize
13
the “legacy” of those who are investing in the school’s future
and the souls of the students it touches through their estate
giving.
Many don’t consider the impact they can make through their
estate – the single, largest transfer of wealth that you will
make in this lifetime. While we think of giving to the Lord and
to charities out of our discretionary
income, we often forget about giving
from our net worth.We strongly
believe that our families want to pass
their values down to their heirs along
with the transfer of their valuables.
There are often significant tax savings
available due to charitable estate gifts.
The CA Legacy Society will include
anyone who desires to leave a legacy and believes enough in
our mission to thoughtfully include CA in their will. If you are
interested in becoming part of the The CA Legacy Society,
please see the envelope included with the Communicator.

Columbia Academy
Endowment Funds
—
Columbia Academy’s first endowment was created in December of 1984. Since then, 33 additional funds and a general
endowment fund have been established. The intent is for the principal to remain for perpetuity with only the growth and
interest gained to be used for current needs. Most of Columbia Academy’s endowed funds were created to provide needbased financial assistance for students. In the 2012-2013 school year, over $173,000 in assistance was given to 98 students
and families with 30% of that amount being drawn from the endowments and the remainder coming from the school’s
operating budget. Thank you to the many generous donors who have helped grow the CA endowment, knowing that these
funds will continually serve to provide students in need with an opportunity to learn in a Christian environment.

Columbia Academy is pleased to announce that Lisa Bennett
will join our administrative staff this year as Vice President
for Development. Bennett will oversee all fundraising efforts
and development of partnerships that will benefit the school’s
mission, according to President Dr. James Thomas. Bennett
most recently served as the Co-Chair of the Columbia
Academy Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) for three years.
“Lisa brings a tremendous amount of energy and ability,
as well as a great deal of dedication to Columbia Academy
and our mission,” Thomas said. “She has a broad range of experiences that will serve
her well in this new role, including her background as a CPA, project manager, and
consultant, not to mention her role as co-chair of the CA PTO.”
Professionally, Bennett has served as a Project Manager with C3 Consulting in
Nashville with 12 years of experience in consulting, information technology, human
resources, accounting, and financial services. Over her career, Bennett has led IT
system implementations and integrations for a Fortune 150 Financial Services
company. She began her career with a Big Four accounting firm where she provided
auditing and consulting services as a CPA.
“I have loved serving CA as a volunteer over the last several years; however, I am
thrilled to have the opportunity to join the CA family in a new capacity,” Bennett
said. “My family continues to be blessed by all that CA has to offer. I have a passion
for the school and its mission and want to do all that I can to help ensure its financial
stability for future generations.”
Bennett is married to Jon Bennett, who is principal of the Columbia Academy Upper
School and together they have three sons who attend Columbia Academy.
NEW SHINE PROGRAM
BEGINS AT LOWER
SCHOOL
WHAT IS THE CA ANNUAL FUND?
BY LISA BENNETT
Beginning in the fall of 2013, Lower School
students in grades K - 4 can participate in the
SHINE (Support and Help in Education)
Program. This program offers additional
instruction and support specific to different
learning needs for students identified as having a
learning gap through teacher referral and language
assessments. This program is available at no
additional cost and serves as a supplement to the
services of the reading and math specialists.
Since I officially joined Columbia Academy in July, I have been fortunate enough to
hear some amazing stories about the struggles of the early days at CA. I have heard
stories that prove that the “founding families” of Columbia Academy stepped out with
great faith and personally took on a great deal of debt in order to make their dream of
a Christian school in the Columbia area a reality. These real-life stories included times
when the Board did not know how they were going to find the funds to pay teachers
the next day! Each time God provided. We are so fortunate to have families that made
it their mission to serve the Lord by establishing Columbia Academy.
In the program, students will receive daily
language based designed instruction to help
them acquire skills needed for academic growth,
according to SHINE Director Stephanie Cofer (see
p. 26). The SHINE Program will also work with
teachers to help facilitate learning by providing
strategies and accommodations and modifications
for each student within the classroom.
Today we benefit from those sacrifices. Our President Dr. James Thomas and our
Board of Directors feel very strongly that we should do everything possible to keep
costs down for students, so as many students as possible can attend. Many of our
families may not realize that tuition costs and fees do not completely cover the
school’s operating expenses. In fact, so that tuition can remain affordable for the
community we serve, we experience a shortfall of approximately $400 per student
each year. The 2013-14 school year is no exception. We must raise an additional
$333,000 in order to cover basic operating costs. That $333,000 is called The CA
Annual Fund.
“Research has shown that children who have a
weakness in language frequently do not perform
at grade level,” Cofer said. “They may struggle
with reading and have difficulty understanding
and expressing themselves. Language provides the
foundation to learning and academic success. We
want all of our students to reach their full potential.”
Like those who came before you, consider taking a similar step of faith with a
commitment to help us bridge this financial gap. Can you make a tax-deductible gift
to The CA Annual Fund this year? If your answer is YES, please feel free to use the
enclosed envelope in the Communicator. Thank you!

1COLLEGE)LEVEL)PROGRAMS!
OF
AT
1O!
ver the summer, several Columbia Academy upper school
students took time away from their vacation time to expand
their opportunities through academic programs at different
universities. Senior Vince Law was selected to participate in the
Foundation for Teaching Economics’ Nashville “Economics for Leaders”
program at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. During the weeklong
program, Law gained an understanding of economic reasoning principles
and how to employ these concepts for successful and effective leadership.
Participants also achieved a heightened awareness of the impact their
decisions have on others and the responsibility that awareness imposes.
Ellen Walker, a junior at CA, travelled the furthest distance this summer
to participate in a program with Lead America at Stanford University
in California. The nine-day summer conference focused on Law and
Trial and provided Walker with the opportunity to attend lectures and
workshops. At the conclusion of the conference, Walker and other
participants conducted a mock trial in the Superior Courthouse in
San Francisco.
“The objective was to study law and at the end to have a mock trial
similar to the one that Coach Diles does with the Mock Trial Team in
the spring semester at CA,” Walker said. “I would like to go on to a good
college and I might go to law school, but I’m not sure yet. I think this
conference helped me get a grasp on law and raised my interest in law,
particularly legal ethics. I learned a lot about the laws and what they mean.
I learned how trials shape the laws that we have today.”
Closer to home, juniors Landon Kilgallon and McKenna Hardison
were selected from some of the most talented and academically gifted
students in the state of Tennessee to participate in Governor’s School.
This intensive five-week program explores 12 academic areas at one
of nine Tennessee state universities. Kilgallon attended the School for
Scientific Models and Data Analysis at ETSU in Johnson City near
the Gray Fossil Site and the Appalachian Trail. Hardison attended the
School for the Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage, also at
ETSU, and enjoyed exploring the area where Tennessee’s history actually
began. Both students earned six hours of college credit for completing
their respective programs.
“This was a very valuable experience based on the memories, the people,
and the opportunity,” Kilgallon said. “The opportunity to be one of
the 30 students (selected for the program) has impacted who I am as a
person and as a future college student. The professors’ dedication to the
program and students has left a strong impression on me.”
Hardison was also grateful for the opportunity and credits her teachers
and experiences at Columbia Academy for equipping her with the
confidence and perspective she needed to fully embrace the challenges
of the college classroom.
“CA prepared me for this opportunity in many ways,” Hardison said.
“Our Bible classes helped me defend my faith when the earth’s timeline
was discussed. Ms. Thrasher’s and Dr. Farris’s challenging classes
prepared me for the rigor of college courses. My participation in Mock
Trial and the Drama Dawgs also gave me confidence when preparing for
class debates. Governor’s School was a very valuable college preparatory
experience and one I’m grateful for.”

CA Lady Dawgs Tennis Team (L to R): Coach Christy Thrasher,
Abigail Wolfe, Caroline White, Catherine Wolfe, Baylie Farris,
Samie Anderson and Anna Grace Wolfe.
Tennis fans at Columbia Academy were treated to a memorable season in 2013. This year, both girls and boys tennis enjoyed a competitive season with
the girls making school history as the State Runner-Up. The team members included Caroline White, Baylie Farris, Samie Anderson, Anna Grace Wolfe,
Abigail Wolfe, and Catherine Wolfe. Team coach Christy Thrasher said the team deserved this honor after countless hours of practice, matches, clinics, and
tournaments.
“The girls and I talked about going to state three years ago and we always had that goal in the back of our minds,” Thrasher said. “We made the dream a
reality. I am so proud of the girls and everything they accomplished in the regular and post season play.”
The road to the State Championship match began with a win for the district title after defeating Summertown High School. The team went on to win the
Regional title after defeating Page High School. In the sub-state round, they overcame Hume-Fogg School in a close but exciting match at the Centennial
Sportsplex in Nashville, which landed them in the state match in Murfreesboro. The Lady Dawgs progressed to the championship match after defeating
Union City High School in the semifinals where they ultimately lost a hard-played match to Chattanooga Christian.
“To have an undefeated team record of 20-0 and reach the state championship match was a dream season,” Thrasher said. “For CA to have a team
represented in the state finals was a huge achievement. It was an unbelievable and amazing season.”
CA STUDENTS RAISE MONEY

Columbia Academy Upper School
students helped to raise funds in
November for Best Buddies Tennessee,
a nonprofit organization dedicated to
establishing a global volunteer movement
that creates opportunities for one-toone friendships, integrated employment
and leadership development for people
with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (IDD). As a promoter chapter
for Best Buddies, Columbia Academy
will host at least two activities with
students from Kings Daughters School in
Columbia each year. After selling T-shirts
and hosting a dodgeball tournament,
the students raised $3,000, which they presented to Todd Loyd, the head fundraiser for Best
Buddies Tennessee in 2012 (seen here with CA teacher John Kodatt and CA student Catherine
Wolfe). Loyd has raised more than $28,000 for the organization.

Spring Hill
Campus
is making
strides
In its third year as a lower grades satellite campus to Columbia Academy, the Spring Hill campus
is growing in several ways. The most significant achievement in 2013 resulted in the campus
receiving its own AdvanceED accreditation independent of the umbrella AdvancED accreditation
the Columbia campus maintains. Principal Dr. Linda Lasater was instrumental in leading her staff
to this exciting milestone for the school.
“We were so proud of accomplishing this and had tremendous support from the Columbia campus
in receiving this accreditation,” Lasater said. “Our campus is so fortunate to be part of an institution
that has been recognized for more than 30 years as an exemplary environment of learning. To be
able to now demonstrate that we’re doing it just as well here at our satellite location is so exciting
for all of us.”
The enthusiasm across campus has also influenced enrollment growth, Lasater said, as families
continue to share their positive experiences with friends and neighbors. Now with more than
95 students and growing, the Spring Hill campus is fortunate to be adding a second section of
Kindergarten in 2013 due to increased interest from local families.
Rachael Rode proudly displays her
artwork at the spring Arts Festival held at
the Spring Hill campus.
“The growth in numbers can largely be contributed to one satisfied parent telling another about
their experience,” Lasater said. “The positive climate, small class sizes, strong academic teaching,
and the Christian faith education that not only includes daily Bible classes, but permeates our entire
day, are among the things that contribute to our parents’ contentment and excitement.”
Dr. Lasater said that parents are also encouraged by academic enhancement experiences such as field
trips, service projects, and guest programs onsite. From a field trip to Ring Farm to a professional
theatrical multi-cultural program to a visit from News Channel 4 to cover the campus’s annual Great
American Shake Out earthquake drill, the students at Spring Hill are enjoying rich experiences
inside and outside the classroom.
Students at both the Columbia and Spring
Hill campuses in the elementary grades
welcomed special guest Miss Tennessee
Lawson Chandler, who shared her
message about caring for others.

Technology usage is also on the rise with the continued use of the iPad carts in classroom learning
and research. At home and at school, students are also increasing their usage of educational software
programs with the school’s implementation of Reading A-Z for Jr. K – 2nd grade and Study Island
for 3rd – 5th grade.

During 2013, the Columbia Academy
family suffered the loss of beloved
graduate Matthew Williams (‘10).
To honor his legacy at Columbia
Academy, Mr. David Hill and
Wiremasters, Inc. made a $10,000
gift to establish the Matthew Williams
Memorial Endowment. Funds from
this endowment will support the basketball program as well as provide an annual
award in Matthew’s memory to a varsity basketball player who best exemplifies the
hustle and effort that Matthew demonstrated on the court.
Matthew Williams was a 2010 graduate of Columbia Academy
where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and 11th in his class.
He was very active in all sports particularly football, basketball
and baseball. During his basketball career he was Columbia
Academy’s Most Valuable Player four years in a row, in 2008
he made District 11-A All Season, in 2009 he was the District
11-A Most Valuable Player and All Region 6-A, and in 2010
he made Region 6-A Tournament Team and District 11-A All
Season Player of the Year. He scored over 1000 points and currently holds the record
for most 3 point shots scored. In baseball he was Columbia Academy’s 2008 Most
Valuable Player, in 2008 and 2009 he made All District in District 11-A and also played
for American Legion Post 19 baseball in 2008 and 2009. In football he was the 2007
Most Valuable Offensive Player for Columbia Academy, in 2008 he was Region 6-1A

After their first year experience at Columbia
Academy, the Cyplik family had to make the
tough decision to move away from Spring
Hill for a job transfer to Michigan. Although
it was a good career opportunity, Courtney
and Kevin were disappointed to move their
four children away, especially the three that
were then enrolled at Columbia Academy,
two of which were enrolled at the Spring Hill
campus.
Last year, the family was happy to return
before the end of the school year and
looks forward to all four of their children
enrolling this year. The Cypliks’ youngest
children Mason and Colin will be enrolled at
Columbia Academy Preschool in Columbia
while their son Owen will be enrolled in
Kindergarten and daughter Morgyn will be
enrolled in third grade, both at the Spring
Hill campus.
“As soon as we knew that moving back to
Tennessee was an option, I very quickly
contacted the school to get the process
started to enroll our children,” Courtney said.
“There was never a question of whether we
wanted the kids to be back there, it was a nobrainer. The staff at CA is like family. “
Courtney recalls how her daughter Morgyn
was very disappointed when they had to
leave the atmosphere and her friends at the
Spring Hill campus. That enthusiasm for the
school that her oldest daughter shared gave
Courtney and Kevin confidence in what the
school could offer.
“They pushed her [Morgyn] and always
kept her on her toes ensuring that she was
challenged and never bored,” Courtney said.
“We never have to question if our kids are
being educated and nurtured because we
know both are happening constantly. Our
kids love going to school and get excited
when they get to come home and tell us
about their day. We really feel like the staff
loves our children as if they were their own.”

STUDENT TRIP INSPIRES
MEANINGFUL MISSION WORK
E
very spring break, a group of Columbia Academy high school
students are inspired to travel to Ensenada, Mexico to work at the
City of Children orphanage. This year’s trip was especially inspiring
to CA students Paul Garretson and Lake Lomax.
Together, Garretson and Lomax traveled more than 4,000 miles round
trip by Amtrak train to join the mission team in San Diego, Ca. where
they crossed the border to Ensenada. Garretson offered to travel by train
with Lomax when he realized that Lake had a medical condition that
made it difficult for him to fly with the rest of the group.
“I wanted Lake to go to the City of Children, and I wanted to do anything
I could to help him get there,” Garretson said. “I prayed a lot about this
trip and knew God would take care of us.”
The trip began in Tennessee and took the students through the heartland
of America – an unforgettable experience that Lomax said he will never
forget. Garretson and Lomax stopped in cities like Chicago, Phoenix,
San Francisco and Los Angeles and learned some valuable lessons along
the way. Both students said they regret not packing enough layers for the
Chicago leg of the trip, Lomax said.
“We literally took a taxi cab to go two blocks because we were so cold,”
Garretson said. “We looked like typical Tennessee guys and everyone else
in Chicago was wearing huge coats and gloves.”
After arriving in sunnier California, Lomax and Garretson met up with the
CA student team for the annual City of Children mission trip. Each year,
students minister to the orphans through facility improvement projects,
31
and play and worship opportunities together. Students also filter into
the poverty stricken region surrounding the Ensenada orphanage to
provide for various physical and spiritual needs.
“The trip really opened up my eyes when you see how these people
live, and how these young kids have to take care of their siblings and
household at the ages of 11 or 12,” Lomax said. “It just really makes you
appreciate everything you have.”
Both students were also surprised at the passion the orphans and other
residents of the region showed for learning more about God. The
experience has led to continued interest in mission work for Garretson,
who took a similar mission trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras just a few
months later in June.
Garretson, now a CA graduate headed to college as a Bible major in the
fall, is already organizing a mission team trip to return to Honduras in
December. The mission work there will provide food, medical relief and
spiritual support to those suffering from disease and extreme poverty.
“God has blessed me more than I could ever imagine,” Garretson said. “I
couldn’t have asked to be at a better place than CA, and I want to thank
everyone at CA for everything they did for me.”
Columbia Academy students plan to support Garretson’s trip through
fundraising efforts they are planning during their small group chapel
meetings this fall. The goal is $10,000 and Garretson is optimistic that
his former classmates can help him make the trip possible, much in the
same way he helped Lomax make a similar trip just a few months before.
