TABLE OF CONTENTS
November 2015 Collection
December 2015 Collection
This collection contains an exciting array of big-name
wines with some extra-special offerings for added
excitement. From the one and only Egon Müller comes
the 2014 Riesling Kabinett. The Northern Rhône
offers three single-vineyard Ermitage wines from
M. Chapoutier. Champagne fans will be thrilled to
find the 1998 Dom Pérignon and the Krug Grande
Cuvée. Italy’s excellent 2010 vintage is well
represented by fine examples of Barolo and Brunello
di Montalcino. Among the high-scoring offerings
from the New World, look for multiple sizes of the
2012 Ridge Monte Bello as well as Duckhorn’s
2012 Three Palms Merlot, and the 2012 Quintessa.
For fans of Barolo there’s sure to be great
excitement around the 1997 Giacomo Borgogno
e Figli Riserva Barolo, while Champagne
devotees should take note of the 2000 Krug.
From Quintarelli, the 2004 Recioto della
Valpolicella Classico and the 2005 Alzero are
must-haves for fans of this Venetian legend.
The New World has some stout offerings from
Australia led by the 2005 Clarendon Hills
Astralis Syrah. A strong contingent of California
Cabernet is anchored by the 2012 Lokoya
Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon and two
offerings from Stag’s Leap.

CHÂTEAU HAUT FAUGÈRES 2010
RED WINE
AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru,
Second wine of Château Faugères
TASTING NOTE: Shows lovely polish
CHÂTEAU COS D’ESTOURNEL 2011
AC Saint-Estèphe, 2e Cru
TASTING NOTE: A dense, refined wine,
with blueberries, blackberries and spices.
Full body with integrated tannins and a
polished texture. Love the mouthfeel to
this. Extremely well done for the vintage,
considering the hail in St Estephe. Try in
2018. Score: 95 (James Suckling,

despite a hefty core of crushed plum,
raspberry coulis and cassis. The long,
racy finish lets mouthwatering red licorice,
fruitcake and singed anise play out,
while a roasted apple wood note wraps
everything up. Should unwind into a
serious crowd-pleaser with cellaring.

CHÂTEAU LAROQUE 2010
CHÂTEAU LA CONFESSION 2011
AC Saint-Émilion
TASTING NOTE: Another terrific effort
from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this beautiful
2011 boasts a dense purple color as well
as a big, sweet bouquet of smoky barbecue, red and black fruits, and subtle background oak. Rich, full-bodied and textured,
there is not a hard edge to be found in this
plush, well-endowed St.-Emilion. Enjoy it
over the next decade. Score: 91 (Robert

AC Saint-Émilion, Grand Cru Classé
(Famille Beaumartin, Prop.)
TASTING NOTE: Blackberries and dark
chocolate at first. Opens up with leather,
fresh wood and aniseed. Good body with
pure fruit and a nice juicy acidity. Chewy
with slightly firm tannins and lots of new
wood that needs time to integrate. Try in

firm structure and dense tannins. It is
concentrated while hiding rich, generous
fruits. It still needs to balance the structure
with the fruit. For the future, it will be a rich
wine full of power. Score: 93 (Roger Voss,

LA CHAPELLE DE LA MISSION
HAUT-BRION 2011
AC Pessac-Léognan, Second wine of
Château La Mission Haut-Brion
TASTING NOTE: This is very, very pretty,
with plum, chocolate and cedar, plus hints
of sweet tobacco. Full, very soft tannins.
Savory and juicy. Delicious already, and
hard not to drink it, but better in 2017.

Ian D’Agata of Vinous gave this wine
a score of 94-97. (vinousmedia.com,
Aug. 2012)
TASTING NOTE: Deliciously plump in
feel, with toasted coconut, piecrust
and warm brioche notes caressing a core
of apricot, fig and creamed pear. The
long, flattering finish picks up an orange
blossom hint to offset the fruit. Best

FRANCE – BURGUNDY
CÔTE DE NUITS
RED WINE
ANTONIN GUYON LES CRAS
CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRU 2012
AC
TASTING NOTE: This is also attractively
perfumed though not quite as high-toned
in character as the fruit is darker. The
middle weight flavors are notably richer
and possess more volume and mid-palate
concentration as well with plenty of
minerality present on the dusty and mildly
austere finish that delivers fine length.
This is more obviously structured and
should age well over the better part of a
decade. Drink: 2019+. Score: 88-91

RED WINE
DOMAINE TAUPENOT-MERME
AUXEY-DURESSES 1ER CRU 2013
AC
TASTING NOTE: Since Romain Taupenot
took over this domaine in 1998, quality
has been progressing continuously, making him one of the rising stars in Burgundy.
The Auxey-Duresses appellation is a
source for some inexpensive Pinots and
Romain’s style of wine is elegant rather
than powerful. This has lovely, precise and
delicate red cherry and violet notes.
The fine-grained tannins are in balance
with the aromatic red fruit palate and it’s
fresh on the finish. Drink: 2018-2025.

DOMAINE CHEVALIER PÈRE & FILS
CORTON ROGNET GRAND CRU 2010
AC
TASTING NOTE: This is completely
different compared to any of the preceding
wines with its reserved, brooding nose
of dense and sauvage red berry fruit and
earth scents that are clearly ripe and
fresh. There is excellent richness, power
and concentration to the moderately
austere and quite firmly structured finish
that delivers impressive depth and length.
This should also age well and need it
too as it will not be an early drinker. Drink:

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 Meursault
AC
TASTING NOTE: Tasted blind at the
1er Cru Le Poruzot-Dessus comes from
a 0.57-hectare parcel of vines planted in
1944 and 1985. It has a lovely bouquet
bursting with mineralite and tension. It
actually reminds me of one of Jean-Marc
Roulot’s gems. The palate is very well
balanced with a crisp, very focused, citric
entry. There is lovely poise and freshness
here – a wine that leaves you craving
to taste it out of bottle tout de suite.

Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in
Beaune. There are certainly some sulfur
issues on the nose of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain 2011 from
Olivier Leflaive, and it somewhat masks
the terroir expression. The palate has a
touch of bitter lemon on the entry. Moderate weight but tightly wound, slightly bitter
and disjointed at the moment with a finish,
but there is great substance here and real
minerality. This actually trumped a lot more
revered Puligny premier cru in the blind
flight. Drink: 2016-2026. Score: 92 (Neal

DOMAINE VINCENT GIRARDIN
SANTENAY LE BEAUREGARD
1ER CRU 2010
AC
Sourced from vines in excess of 45 years
old that are situated in clay, limestone
and marl-rich soils. The soils of Santenay
are somewhat richer in marl than the rest
of the Côte d’Or, and the wines they create
are noted for their fullness and earthy
complexity. Vincent Girardin is considered
to be one of the best producers in
Santenay and creates wines that deliver
a distinct cherry, strawberry and
mineral note.

LE PUITS 1ER CRU 2011
AC
TASTING NOTE: Shows gorgeous
harmony, with a vivid structure driving
the lemon, apple, peach, vanilla and clove
flavors. Linear and taut, energetically
extending the spice- and mineral-infused
aftertaste. Best from 2015 through

Vibrant, very pure aromas of flowers,
nutmeg and cold steel. Sweet and suave
on entry, then dense and energetic in
the middle, with no excess fat to the flavors
of peach pit, nutmeg and acacia flower.
Noble, palate-coating Puligny without
an ounce of excess fat. Finishes fresh,
fine-grained, dry and very long. Score: 93+

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC MOREY
CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET LES
CHENEVOTTES 1ER CRU 2012
AC
TASTING NOTE: This is somewhat more
expressive as there is no issue with reductive notes to dampen the moderately
exotic aromas of mandarin orange, apricot
and mango nuances. This also possesses
an opulent texture as there is plenty of
mouth coating dry extract that is buffered
by the relatively firm acid spine on the
textured finale. It’s interesting as this is
a big but not necessarily powerful wine
that retains a fine sense of balance.

TASTING NOTE: One of the wines of the

brings together all of the crystalline nuance

gorgeous textural richness. Lemon peel,

TASTING NOTE: Even better and a
prodigious effort that hits all my sweet
spots, the 2011 Ermitage Le Pavillon
comes from one of the top terroirs
on Hermitage hill, the granite soils of the
Les Bessards lieu-dit. Spectacularly
perfumed, with raspberry, blackberry,
licorice, toasted spices and assorted
floral nuances, this full-bodied effort has
massive depth and richness, no hard edges
and masses of finely polished tannin that
emerge on and frame the finish. It will be
approachable at an earlier age than either

a big “Wow” in my notes and is a brilliant
Crozes-Hermitage. Cote Rotie-like with

one of the top whites in any given vintage,
the 2011 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree (first
produced in 1991) comes from 80+-yearold Marsanne vines planted in the Les
Murets lieu-dit. Gorgeously full-bodied and
impeccably put together on the palate,
with awesome texture and richness that’s
framed by vibrant acidity, it boasts off the
hook aromas and flavors of flower oil, buttered citrus, dried pineapple and powdered
rock. It will be even better in another year,

PEGASO BARRANCOS DE PIZARRA
2010
Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León
(Telmo Rodriguez)
TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Pegaso
Barrancos de Pizarra is produced with
Garnacha from old, head-pruned vineyards
in the village of Cebreros, province
of Ávila, one of the few places in the Gredos
mountain range where some soils are
slate-based; the majority of Gredos is
composed of granite found at different
levels of decomposition, often in the shape
of sand. The wine feels very young, and
when uncorked it has a lactic note that
denotes youth. The fruit is a mixture of red
and black berries with some aromatic, balsamic herbs and a mineral hint. The palate
is medium-bodied, fleshy and framed by
round, fine-grained tannins. There’s a little
bit of a bitter taste toward the end. This
needs a little bit more time than the granite
bottling as the wine is fuller and you feel the
effect of the oak a little more. For comparison I also tasted the 2004 vintage, which
felt riper, more concentrated and more obviously oaked (it was a different time then)
as it still shows notes of smoke and spices.
Still, it’s youthful and showing very few signs
of evolution, which should give an idea
about how the more balanced, current vintages might age. The wine keeps changing
in the glass and at times I preferred the
nose to the granite bottling. Though the
palate remains a bit harsh, in the long run
this will be the better wine. It showed better
on day two. Super! Drink: 2016-2024.

excels, however is on the palate. The texture
is absolutely beguiling, firm yet silky, taught
yet giving and generous, with a finish that

Historically, Quintarelli has produced a
Recioto only once or twice a decade, when
the grapes were of the ultimate quality.
This makes these wines incredibly exciting,
sought-after and treasured. There are
currently no reviews available for the 2004,
but previous releases have earned exceptional ratings, including the coveted BBB
from Italy’s authoritative publication
Gambero Rosso, as well as scores in the

Quintarelli is a name that is virtually
interchangeable with “superlative.” There are
few names so revered, so truly iconic and
so readily identified with quality, tradition and
artisanal winemaking. The care, precision and,
above all, the patience that goes into making
the wines of Quintarelli play no small part in
creating the legendary, almost mythical status
that the wines own. The primarily old-vine
Cabernet Franc Alzero is made using the
appassimento technique, where the grapes
are dried before being pressed and made
into wine, and is the embodiment of the
uncompromising perfection that lies
at the heart of these phenomenal, concentrated and intensely flavoured handmade

TASTING NOTE: The name of this wine
is a tip of the hat to the famed Amarone
producer Giuseppe Quintarelli, whose wines
were the reference point for Len Crispino,
when he decided to start the Foreign Affair,

texture of syrup, and a sexy profile of plum,
dried olives, maraschino cherries, anise,
mint, milk chocolate and vanilla. Yes, the

located at 880 meters altitude in a zone

It’s aromatic, elegant and subtle, ripe and

Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: A fine follow up to the
exceptional 2006 Grande Cuvée, the 2007
has retained extraordinary freshness and
purity in this much warmer vintage, without
sacrificing full flavour maturity and depth.
The mousse is very fine and gentle; malolactic
fermentation was prevented in order
to retain the incisive malic acid, which drives
through the long finish. Dosage was just
2 grams of sugar, and this is indeed virtually
bone dry, yet this is anything but austere
or shrill: there’s a real sense of richness and
fleshy fruit on the palate. Sautéed green
apple, fresh ginger, baked bread, orange,
lemon, and lemon custard notes linger on
beautifully, and this comes across as fresher
than the 2006 at the same age, and should
continue to gain in complexity over the next

DO
TASTING NOTE: The NV Moscatel Toneles
has reached a mythical status locally in
Spain. It’s an extremely old, concentrated
and powerful sweet wine that was long
forgotten, because there was no market for
it. The color is dark brown, almost opaque
with amber-green edges. The ever-changing
nose is an explosion of spices (curry and
cinnamon) and noble woods, and from the
sheer concentration it displays a myriad
of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, balsamic
herbs and even a note of coconut. After
some time in the glass the roasted orange
notes of Muscat come back intermixed with
very spicy incense notes. Give it more time
and it smells of camphor. It’s fascinating
to smell it over the course of a few hours –
even days. The palate is immensely
concentrated, with the alcohol perfectly
integrated and the extreme sweetness
compensated by a piercing acidity that
reminds me of some century-old Madeiras.
It ends with an acute coffee note. The aftertaste is eternal. It is exceptional that such an
old wine (it could be over 80 years of average
age) keeps the freshness and balance, but
when this happens, the wine is exceptional.
A world-class sweet wine that shows what
