from the
York Catholic Family
From the Principal
Dear Alumni and Friends of York Catholic High School,
Our students continue to make us proud as they represent the spiritual and academic
tradition that has been a part of York Catholic for nearly 85 years. As noted below,
their SAT scores continue to surpass national, state, and local averages and their level
of scholarship rewards demonstrate the return one can achieve when choosing to
invest in a York Catholic education. In fact, last year’s graduating class received 5.5
million dollars in scholarships collectively. To put this in perspective, one of York
County’s high achieving local public schools graduated twice the number of students
who collectively achieved approximately 1.5 million dollars in scholarships. Again, the
return is worth the investment. Of course, I know all of you as friends and family
members of the YC Irish share in the pride we all have for our school and alma mater.
It is that pride which reflects in the greater York community and allows our reputation
for academic excellence to be felt as our students become contributing citizens in the area.
In August, Bishop McFadden met with the high school
2012 SAT AVERAGES
Board of Directors in the Diocese and expressed his
vision for how the mission of Catholic Education should

continue in our area. He suggested as schools, we need
to embrace the talent pool which exists among our

Bishop’s goals, including the addition of two new
committees in the areas of Alumni Outreach, and
Retention and Public Relations. Other committees continuing to function with some revamping are the
Institutional Advancement Committee (formerly the Development Committee), the Finance Committee, and
the Building and Grounds Committee. If you would like to lend your talents in these areas, please let me
know.
While I continue to meet and interact with many of you this year, I feel assured we are accomplishing the
Bishop’s goals for Catholic Education together as a YC family. Many of you have assisted in furthering the
school’s mission in one way or another. This may be through your gracious financial support or through
sharing your many talents and abilities. We invite you to continue sharing in these ways as we seek to
maintain excellence and grow for the future security of our school.
Next year, we will celebrate our 85th anniversary and the planning has begun for this momentous occasion. As
we prepare for this year-long celebration we are seeking your input and assistance. We hope to support the
graduates of the years ending in 3 and 8 with their reunion planning. Please contact Jennifer Stees Glassmyer,
our Director of Development and Alumni, for any assistance or direction you may need as you plan these
celebrations. We are also looking for volunteers to help coordinate the many events we hope to host in
celebrating our 85th year. Again, if you have talents you are interested in sharing with us as we plan for
this event, please contact Jennifer. We value your input as we move forward with these plans.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Adrienne K. Seufert ‘96

Tuition Assistance
This money helps ALL students by keeping the cost of
tuition down and assisting students who might not be
able to afford tuition by their own means. In these
trying economic times we continue to have a great need
for tuition assistance.
We thank you for your generous commitment
to the legacy of York Catholic
and for your support of Catholic education.
Teacher Salaries
We have many talented and dedicated teachers on our
staff who strive to provide the best well-rounded
Catholic education for our students. We continue to try
to provide our teachers with salaries so they in turn can
adequately provide for their families. We can always use
help in continuing to build this fund started by the
generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Beazley in
recognition of Mr. James “Coach” Forjan.
Gaelic Club
The Gaelic Club is an honorary organization founded to
give recognition to a select group who have
demonstrated a special commitment to the financial well
being of York Catholic High School. There are four
options available for membership:

This money will help fund sports programs for YC
students and help provide transportation and officials’

Holding Appreciated Securities?
In response to the questions from our loyal alumni and
friends, here are the details about making a gift using
depreciated securities.
To make a gift to any of these specific funds, write your
designation on the memo line of your check or enclose a
note in your donation envelope and mail to York
Catholic at the address on the back of Greensleeves.
If you have stocks that have experienced significant
declines and are now worth less than what you paid for
them, consider using those stocks to make a gift to York
Catholic High School.
Career Day
Tuesday, March 26, 2013
For maximum tax savings, sell the stock, take any
allowable loss, and then donate the cash proceeds to
us. This way, you’ll obtain a charitable deduction for
the cash gift, and you can offset the losses against any
gains this year. If your overall losses exceed your
gains, you can deduct up to $3,000 of the excess loss
from ordinary income — and carry over excess losses to
future years.
We are looking for alumni, parents, and friends
of York Catholic to give their time and talents
to current students during YC’s Career Day.
Volunteers present general overviews
of their career field, educational requirements,
and typical work day scenarios.
Please consider sharing your experience
with our students.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SCHOLARS
Four students from the Class of 2012 were named AP Scholars by the College Board based on results of various
Advanced Placement tests. This recognition is granted to students who received scores of 3 or higher on three or
more AP Exams throughout high school. We applaud Liam Brennan, Alex Giannaris, Nicholas Martin and Mackenzie
Nelson for being named AP Scholars. York Catholic achieved an 82% pass rate on students earning a 3 or higher on
AP exams. We congratulate all of our AP students and AP teachers from the 2011-2012 school year.
NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS
York Catholic High School is proud to announce seven students have
been recognized by officials of the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (NMSC) in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship

some 8,300 scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be
offered next spring. More than 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high
schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by

The York Catholic High School
Grotto is a beautiful area located
on the east side of campus. The
Grotto was created through the
generous donations of many friends,
family, and students. A statue of Mary, a rock
garden, and a pond form a peaceful site for prayer and
reflection. Surrounding the area is a walkway of
engraved bricks dedicated to the honor and memory of
family, friends, and classmates. You can purchase an
engraved brick for $50. Complete the form found at
www.yorkcatholic.org. Go to the Forms and
Documents page and scroll to the bottom section titled

Mystical Rose Society
The Mystical Rose Society is comprised of committed
individuals who, like the Patroness of York Catholic – Mary, the
Mystical Rose – dedicate themselves to answering the Lord’s
call to building the Kingdom of God through the education of
children. Realizing that today's young people are a precious
source of goodness, members of the Society support the
philosophy and values of Catholic education at York Catholic.
In the spirit of our Mystical Rose, our philosophy of education
leads young people to experience the love of God and neighbor
in a caring community, to understand their faith, and to
develop and use their intellects and talents in the service of
God and others. The Society was established as an
organization that requires an annual membership commitment
of one thousand dollars or more to any York Catholic fund.
Purpose
For nearly 85 years, York Catholic has provided the best opportunity for a well-rounded, Christcentered education. Members of the Mystical Rose Society help York Catholic continue its tradition of
academic excellence and help accomplish its mission as a Catholic school. Providing quality programs
in a Catholic environment is a continual goal of our faculty and staff. The support of the Mystical Rose
Society helps to reach that goal with the following special objectives:

To fund the Tuition Assistance endowment, the Forjan Focus Fund (teacher salary endowment), and
other school endowments

To support special projects initiated by the school's administration for ongoing support to the
academic program including equipment needs

To support the ongoing operational costs of the school in the areas where funds are most needed
Benefits
In addition to the personal satisfaction that comes from helping to preserve the York Catholic tradition,
Mystical Rose Society members also enjoy the following benefits:

Members are remembered at the general intercessions during Mass in the months of October and
May

Members are invited to a reception following the annual May Crowning

Members are acknowledged in the Annual Report published in Greensleeves
