The Southern Story is a rich,
dramatic collection of complex and
compelling facts, ideas, myths, and
mysteries: Native Americans, railroads, slavery, politics, agriculture,
war, shipping, reconstruction, aristocracy, civil rights, and technology.
Here in Roswell, Georgia - situated
just 20 miles north of Atlanta - three
historic homes speak volumes about
the history of the American South
from 1838 to the present. Barrington
Hall, Bulloch Hall and Smith Plantation, a trio of antebellum museum
homes, are open to the public for
visits and exploration. Closely
situated as neighbors in the historic town
of Roswell, each home has its own cultural
bounty to share - and its own part of the
Southern Trilogy Story - to tell.

Barrington built his home
on the highest point, overlooking the town. Today,
this home is recognized as
one of the finest examples
of Greek Revival architecture in the country. It’s also

the only Antebellum Garden in metro Atlanta

A Love Story...and so much more

Built by Major James Stephens Bulloch, grandson of Georgia’s Revolutionary Governor,
Archibald Bulloch, this home is one of the most
significant houses in Georgia. It was here in
her childhood home that Mittie Bulloch met a
young man from the prominent Roosevelt family of New York. She captured his heart and
they wed at Christmastime in 1853. This was
the union that produced U.S. President, Teddy
Roosevelt. The couple’s other son,
Elliott, fathered Eleanor, who became the wife
of Franklin and the nation’s most beloved First
Lady. It was she who forever changed the
role of women in the White House. There’s
no mystery why Margaret Mitchell, author of
Gone with the Wind, sought out the last living
bridesmaid and wrote extensively about the
wedding for the Atlanta Constitution
Magazine. Bulloch’s reconstructed slave
cabin, with its living quarters and exhibits, provides opportunities to explore and recognize
the role of African-American slaves in the history of
Roswell.

eldest son, Willie, was killed during the Civil
War. Perhaps it was Willie’s death that caused
the family to hold tight to their other possessions. Whatever the reason, Smith Plantation
is filled with the family’s original artifacts. See
how time has altered this home from the time of
slaves working in the fields to a very different
day in 1986 when the family’s descendants
sold the house to the City of Roswell on the
strict condition that the family’s maid, Mamie
Cotton, be allowed to live in the house for the
remainder of her life.

During the Civil War, 400 mill workers, mostly
women and children, were arrested, charged
with treason, and sent north to uncertain fates.
Sherman wrote: Arrest all people connected

with those factories, no matter what the clamor,
and let them foot it, under guard, to Marietta,
whence I will send them by cars to the North ….

The Roswell Visitors Center offers a free
self-guided tour map of Roswell’s Historic
District and a Civil War brochure highlighting events and sites. For those who revel in
history, Roswell’s Historic District offers 640
acres of vintage homes, historic sites, museums,
monuments, churches and cemeteries, with 122
acres of area listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.

northern banks of the Chattahoochee River in
an area once called “Enchanted Land.”
“As you explore some of our wooded trails,
remember you are entering the home of a
people who once lived a way of life that might
seem foreign to us now. Somewhere near you
stands a tree from whose “grandfather-tree”
a bow was carved – and from another, an
arrow. From other trees within your view came
“aspirin” and “pasta and tough dependable
cordage … all from the inner bark.” There
was a day when this knowledge was known
to every man, woman and child. These were
the Native Americans who once inhabited the

Explore Roswell with a hike, stroll, or by
canoe, kayak, or raft. Keep a pair of binoculars handy for bird watching and perhaps a
journal to log the flora and fauna you will find

small-scale craft brewery coming March 2016 to Roswell. The
first female-owned Brewery in Georgia, founder
Kathy Davis decided either to start a goat farm
in some remote wilderness or pursue her passion
of producing her award-winning Belgian-style
beers for the public. The brewery won out, and
Abbey of the Holy Goats was born. The Abbey
will produce innovative Belgian-style beers
designed for perfect food pairing. Davis said the
name, Abbey of the Holy Goats, encompasses
many of her interests in life. “The name comes
from my interest in abbeys as far as living in
them, and the beer styles, and the goats come
from my love of goats. And, of course, it’s also
a play on the words ‘holy ghost.’ The monastic
lifestyle is still something that really interests me.
No matter what religion you follow, it’s always
a wonderful thing to endeavor towards.” Follow

The name is rooted in
neighboring Atlanta’s
historical moniker as the “Gate City of the New
South” due to its reputation as a hub for culture,
commerce and transportation. At Gate City the
founders—Pat Rains, Brian Borngesser and Garrett Nail-- are Roswell residents themselves. Rains
says, “We strive to brew beers that embody the
very same independent spirit that inspired us to
chase our dreams of opening Roswell’s first craft
brewery. This is our home, where we’re raising
our families; and we see it as a great privilege
and tremendous honor to be a part of this community.” The brewery opened with two beers

– the “Copperhead” amber ale and the “1864”
IPA. The Copperhead Ale is a medium-bodied
American Amber flavored with Pacific Northwest
hops with a copper color and crisp finish. 1864
IPA is an approachable American IPA, which
offers a slightly fruity nose and a very drinkable
hop flavor. Rains said there are plans for several
more in the works. There will be four year-round
beers with some specialty and seasonal beers
as well.

Variant is in the early planning stages, targeting
late 2016 to open its doors, bringing the total
of breweries in Roswell to three. Matt Curling,
Variant’s owner and Brewmaster says the focus
“…will be on variety rather than quantity so the
smaller fermenters will allow us to explore some
more experimental recipes.” The brewery will
be located in Roswell very near to the Canton
Street scene. They’ve acquired a 3,600 square
feet building where most of the space will be
dedicated to their brewhouse. Initially Variant
will start with a 7-barrel system with a couple
7-barrel fermenters and brite tank as well as a
couple 3.5-barrel fermenters and a brite tank.
Curling continues, “Our goal is to push the limits
of craft beer by modifying traditional recipes
and experimenting with various adjuncts, unique
grain bills, hop schedules and yeasts to create
a wide variety of unique drinking experiences.”

Mother’s Day Wknd – Historic Town
Square; This juried arts show with artists from
throughout the southeast has been celebrating art and artists for over 25 years. Fine
arts and original crafts, children’s activities,
entertainment and an array of festival foods.
Artisans whose works are hand-made are
invited to submit an application. There is
no re-selling of merchandise but artists are
invited who make fine creations in paintings,
clay, glass, fiber/textiles, graphics, mixed
media, sculpture, and original hand-made
