“I want to take the reader of this photo book on a journey, and photography is the one language that everyone in the world understands.”
This book contains my favorite photographs, and each of them should speak
for itself.
I was born in Vienna in 1968, my mother Christine was a hair stylist and my father
Peter a copyeditor at Kurier, one of the largest daily newspapers in Austria.
As far as I can remember, I was a very shy child. When we visited people I did
not know, I would hide under the table for a long time until I connected with
someone, even when other children were there. Even though my parents sepa­
rated around the time of my tenth birthday, I cannot say that I had a difficult or
complicated childhood. Schladming became my second home after Vienna, and

I spent a great deal of time there with my grandfather Franz Malecz – surrounded
by the beauty of nature and in the mountains.
My grandfather sparked my interest in photography. He had his own dark­
room, and he submitted his photographs to different contests and won a num­
ber of prizes. His collection included pictures from the war, and landscape photo­
graphs. After his death, I was given a very large archive of his pictures that I
treasure to this day. Schladming itself with its mountains, glaciers, lakes, vibrant
forests, and old farmhouses had an enormous influence on my travel photogra­
phy. Before I knew who Ansel Adams was, I saw old pictures of alpine farms and
holidaymakers in the display window of a local photographer, and they impressed
me as a small boy. As a child, I was not particularly interested in people; I did
not realize until decades later that documenting people – be they centenarians,
homeless, or stars – would become a major element of my creative work.

In diesem Buch finden sich meine liebsten Fotografien, und jedes sollte für
sich alleine wirken.
Ich wurde 1968 in Wien geboren, meine Mutter Christine war Friseurin, und
mein Vater Peter Korrektor beim Wiener Kurier, einer der größten Tages­
zeitungen Österreichs. Soweit ich mich zurück erinnern kann war ich ein sehr
schüchternes Kind, wenn wir bei Fremden zu Besuch waren, versteckte ich
mich sehr lange unter dem Tisch bis ich Anschluss fand, auch wenn andere
Kinder da waren. Obwohl sich meine Eltern um meinen 10. Geburtstag
trennten, kann ich nicht sagen, dass ich eine schwere oder komplizierte Kind­
heit hatte. Meine zweite Heimat neben Wien wurde Schladming, wo ich viel Zeit
mit meinem Großvater Franz Malecz in der wunderschönen Natur und in den
Bergen verbracht habe.
Mein Großvater war der Ursprung meines Interesses an Fotografie, er hatte selbst
eine Dunkelkammer, reichte seine Fotografien bei verschiedenen Wettbewerben
ein und gewann auch des öfteren Preise. Aufnahmen aus dem Krieg waren
ebenso dabei, als auch Landschaftsfotografien. Nach seinem Tod bekam ich
ein sehr großes Archiv seiner Bilder, die ich nach wie vor wie einen Schatz hüte!
Schladming selbst mit seinen Bergen, Gletschern, Seen, tiefen Wäldern und
alten Bauernhöfen beeinflusste meine Reisefotografie enorm. Noch nicht wissend
wer Ansel Adams war, sah ich alte Bilder von Sennerinnen oder Urlaubern beim
stadtbekannten Fotografen in der Auslage, die mich schon als kleiner Junge be­
eindruckten. Das Interesse an Menschen war als Kind für mich nicht vorhanden,
und erst Jahrzehnte später wurde mir bewusst, dass es ein großer Bestandteil

wünschen übrig ließ und meine Mutter daher veranlasst hatte den Nachbarn,

Die damalige Zeit und die Fotografien daraus finde ich auch heute noch sehr
spannend, wenn nicht sogar interessanter, denn nichts wurde mit Photoshop
verändert oder retuschiert, und ich bzw. alle anderen fotografierten einfach das,
was sie sahen. Im Alter zwischen 10–16 Jahren lag meine Leidenschaft in der
Landschaftsfotografie, mit zunehmendem Alter stieg jedoch das Interesse an
Frauen und Erotik. In den ersten Jahren der Modelfotografie beeinflusste mitunter
auch mein Testosteronspiegel die Bildsprache, und erst in den Jahren darauf
wurde mir vieles klar.
Es begann eine Zeit, wo ich viel fotografierte, und auf der Suche meiner eigenen
Bildsprache bzw. Form meiner Bilder war. Ich erkannte, dass ich dem Moment

Jahren immer noch gerne ansieht und die man nicht vergisst – Sujets wie bei­

Es war für mich nicht schwierig zu fotografieren, sondern richtig sehen zu lernen.
Autodidakt und ohne Ausbildung in Kunst oder Fotografie suchte ich die feinsten
Veränderungen von Mienen der Frauen, das Rätsel Ihrer Eleganz und Bewegung,
und einen Unterschied zu normaler Nacktheit. Mir war in frühen Jahren nicht klar,
dass man mit 10 einzigartigen Sujets bzw. Fotografien in einem Jahr bereits eine
gute Ausbeute hat, und ich war rastlos, unruhig und wollte mehr.
1996 war ein großer Wendepunkt in meiner Karriere – mit einem Inserat suchte
ich eine Assistentin. Die damalige Nelly Sperl, eine ehemalige Miss Austria, kam
in mein Leben!
Obwohl wir erst kurz ein Paar waren, wollte ich meine Karriere nicht weiter in
Österreich aufbauen, sondern in einem englischsprachigen Land, wie England,
Amerika, Australien oder Kanada. Mir war schon damals bewusst, wenn man mit
seinen Bildern weltweit bekannt werden möchte, dass dies nur so funktionieren
kann, und so kam ich auf die Idee nach Kanada auszuwandern. Nelly zögerte
keine Minute, und wir haben in Wien alles abgebrochen, verkauft und machten
uns mit unserer Hündin Suleika auf den Weg nach Toronto. Ab diesem Zeit­
punkt in unserem Leben ging es nur mehr um die Fotografie, um die Erweiterung
des Horizonts, das Umsetzen meiner Sujets, um auch davon leben zu können.
Das Reifen meiner Bildsprache wurde mir immer wichtiger. Ich glaube, dass ein
kreativer und talentierter Fotograf den Mut haben muss, seinen eigenen Weg
zu gehen. Mir wurde in dieser Zeit auch klar, dass ich nichts mehr fotografieren
möchte, sei es noch so interessant, wenn ich es nicht für fotogen halte, denn
wenn die Elemente nicht stimmen, kann niemals ein für mich zufrieden stellendes
Bild entstehen.
