This year we will present for you one of the most relevant topics for healthcare workers: Patient-centred renal care: a multidisciplinary approach to holistic health. Patient-centered care that encompasses informed decision making can improve treatment choice, quality of care and outcomes. Patient-centered care recognizes the need for major changes in the process of care that arranges health care system around the patient and implies a careful and accurate care planning from the multidisciplinary health team workers. At this Conference we will focus on the last updates on renal care. Every member of the multidisciplinary renal team will be able to find an interesting topic within their own area of professional interest, as well as share knowledge and experience with international delegates representing over 50 countries worldwide. As in previous years, you will have a great opportunity to visit an exciting renal exhibition covering the most up to date technology and research in renal care. This exhibition is supported by our industry partners. Last but not least, patient-centered care can play a vital role in healthcare policy, allocation of resources and delivering appropriate care by effectively integrating patient and provider perspectives. Riga will be the stage for another impressive EDTNA/ERCA International Conference and it will be a marvellous opportunity to see its history, tradition and culture. It is a theme that embraces the vision of our organisation which strives to put the patient and their careers at the centre of the care we offer in our units, wards and communities. The EDTNA/ERCA is multi-disciplinary and through the Scientific Programme we encourage all those who are developing services or caring for people with renal disease to participate and share their experiences. Patient centred, holistic care aims to ensure sure that patients are equal partners in their health care experience. Using this approach patients and health care practitioners benefit because the individual experiences greater satisfaction with their care. This leads to a more cost-effective health system. In making patient centred, holistic care a reality, we invite you to contribute to this 43rd EDTNA/ERCA International Conference and to think about how you contribute to this activity. During the Conference, exchange of information and experience between health care professionals, patients and their carers will take place and experts will come and share their knowledge. We aim to promote awareness of the complexities of renal care with emphasis on respect and holism, power and empowerment, choice and autonomy and empathy and compassion. The 43rd EDTNA/ERCA International Conference will be a forum for sharing excellent research and innovations in practice from countries worldwide. To celebrate our theme the Conference calls for high quality abstracts to complement key topics of interest including: • • • • • • • • • • • • • Haemodialysis (acute and chronic) Vascular access Peritoneal dialysis Transplantation CKD prevention and delay Paediatric care Education of staff/patients Service management, quality and audit Technical Conservative management/Palliative care Acute kidney injury Green Innovations – pioneering work to reduce the environmental burden of dialysis Open forum Abstract guidelines are available to enhance the quality of your abstract submission and ensure sufficient information is presented to allow a fair peer review assessment. However, if you are considering presenting your work and would like help to write an abstract, please contact your country Key Member who will be happy to offer further advice. For KM contacts please see page 18. Helen Noble Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee 43rd EDTNA/ERCA International Conference | September 6–9, 2014 | Riga, Latvia | www.edtnaerca.org 7 The Conference over three days will provide: Scientific Parallel Sessions At symposia sessions, invited Guest Speakers will discuss the latest developments in renal care. Quality abstracts will be selected for inclusion in these parallel sessions. Education Workshops Workshops are open to all participants from any discipline who wish to discuss matters relating to their specific field of interest or learn more about another aspect of renal care. Workshop sessions provide the opportunity for delegates to extend their knowledge and skills through interactive discussion with experts to identify solutions for real practice problems. Master Classes Master Class sessions are focused educational sessions presented by expert Guest Speakers. These provide delegates with the opportunity to debate a topic in detail with a recognised expert in the field. A number of Master Class sessions will be organised to complement the main scientific programme. Short Oral Presentations Abstracts selected for short oral presentation will be presented within a dedicated session. The presentation will include 3–5 power point slides to generate an overview of the work / research or topic focused to stimulate audience discussion and questions. Corporate Education Sessions These sessions are organised and sponsored by industry partners and provide opportunity for participants to access worldwide expertise to improve their own knowledge of particular focused subjects. Haemodialysis 2. Vascular access 3. Peritoneal dialysis 4. Transplantation 5. CKD prevention and delay 6. Paediatric care 7. Education of staff/patients 8. Service management, quality and audit 9. Technical 10. Conservative management/Paliative care 11. Acute kidney injury 12. Green innovations – pioneering work to reduce the environmental burden of dialysis 13. Open forum Abstract MUST be submitted electronically according to the instructions provided on the Conference website www.edtnaerca-conference2014.com by 15 February 2014. • • • • • • • • • • • • • All abstracts must be written in English. Please note that if your abstract is accepted for an oral presentation, you must be able to give your presentation in English. Abstracts received after the deadline will not be accepted or considered for the programme or publication. All authors attending the Conference whose abstract is accepted must have the financial resources to pay all personal expenses incurred (Conference registration, production of their presentation, travel and accommodation). Abstracts must be submitted within an abstract category group, which the author must select at the time of submission (please refer to list above). However, the Scientific Programme Committee reserves the right to assign or change the topic category upon abstract selection. Abstracts will be subject to double-blind peer review by dedicated abstract category marking teams. Based on the accumulative quality / content scores. Abstracts will be selected by the Scientific Programme Committee for oral, short oral or poster presentation. A preference for poster presentation can be indicated although the Scientific Programme Committee will make the final decision as to how the abstract will be presented. Acceptance or rejection of an abstract is based on the average mark awarded by the peer review marking team. Posters are particularly suitable for the presentation of complex data or material requiring extensive illustration. It should be noted that poster presentations carry the same status as oral presentations and will be subject to the same selection process (by means of written abstracts in English) by the Scientific Programme Committee. Accepted abstracts will be published in an Abstract Book. Abstract book will have the ISBN number because it is mandatory to give value to the abstracts presented. An abstract needs to be clear. In particular we want to know why you explored the subject, the approach you used, and that the method was appropriate and results reliable. However, we are also interested in how you have implemented your findings into clinical practice and the consequences of this change. Please emphasize this in your abstract, and when presenting make the focus of your talk / poster the application to practice rather than the objectives and methods used in the study. The intent of EDTNA/ERCA is to present original work during the Conference. Therefore, previously presented or published abstracts cannot be accepted. At least one person endorsing the paper has to be EDTNA/ERCA Member. If you have difficulties in submitting your abstracts or if you need any further information please contact the Conference Department at [email protected]. We also observe that a proposal for nutrient profiles in the context of the nutrition and health claims regulation has not yet been published, despite being planned for January 2009. We are above all awaiting a strong political signal on chronic diseases from the European Commission: a proposal for a European Union Strategy and Action Plan on Chronic Diseases, including recommendations to address the major health risk factors: poor nutrition, alcohol and tobacco consumption and physical inactivity. We look forward to seeing substantial progress before the end of your second term. Dear President Barroso, We are the European Chronic Disease Alliance (ECDA) – an alliance of 10 organisations representing over 100,000 health professionals and millions of patients. The overarching target referred to above will be accompanied by specific targets, including a 30% relative reduction in mean population intake of salt/sodium, a 10% relative reduction in harmful use of alcohol, and a 30% relative reduction in prevalence of current tobacco use in persons aged 15+ years. Policies to achieve these targets fall well within the regulatory competence of the European Union. Inaction will have disastrous outcomes – both in terms of Healthy Life Years lost and continued strains on healthcare systems. Chronic diseases cost economies immensely, through medical and social care needs, as well as through impact of premature retirement and reduced work force productivity. In a statement in August 2011, ECDA said that robust action to prevent and control chronic diseases “… will not be an emergency bailout but a long-term investment in the most valued primary resource: people´ Presiding over an economic downturn is difficult but EU initiatives and legislative measures have great potential to help reversing chronic diseases (meeting the targets referred to above). We are sure you are aware of the burden of chronic diseases and the impact it has not only on people but on the economy. To emphasise and highlight the necessity to take action on the matter, here are some figures: up to 40% of the EU population aged over 15 report a long-standing health problem related to chronic diseases up to 80% of health-care expenses are allocated to chronic diseases – in other words costs of chronic diseases are in the billions of euros every year; cardiovascular diseases alone are estimated to cost the EU economy 196 billion euros (health and non-health costs) every year chronic diseases to cost the world $ 47 trillion by 2030 in lost output. It is also worth noting that although the European Union has a high average life expectancy, namely 79.4 years, healthy life years expectancy is 61.45 years. This difference of 18 years is not a positive sign for governments wishing to postpone retirement age until 65 years of age or older! There is still time to pick up the chronic disease challenge and reverse the alarming projections of chronic diseases and the downward trend in the number of people in the workforce by 2020. It is a target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from chronic non-communicable diseases by 2025. This target is not a target for the health ministers of the world; it is a target for all politicians. The European Union will only deliver on this target if it commits to a long-term, dedicated strategy for the prevention of chronic diseases. Without this, our citizens will continue to suffer the debilitating effects of these diseases which all too often lead to premature death. dŚĞƉůĂĐĞǁŚĞƌĞŽƵƌŽŶĨĞƌĞŶĐĞǁŝůůƚĂŬĞƉůĂĐĞ͕dŚĞ<ŽŶƐĞƌƚŚƵƐĞƚ͕ŝƐĂůŽǀĞůLJǁŽƌŬŝŶŐƉůĂĐĞĨŽƌdŚĞDĂůŵƂ^LJŵƉŚŽŶLJKƌĐŚĞƐƚƌĂĂŶĚǁĞǁŝůůĞŶũŽLJƚŚĞĞŶǀŝƌŽŶŵĞŶƚĂůŝƚ ďƌŝŶŐƐƚŽƵƐ͘tĞĂůƐŽŚŽƉĞLJŽƵǁŝůůůŝŬĞŽƵƌŝĚĞĂŽĨďƌŝŶŐŝŶŐŝŶƐŽŵĞůŽĐĂůŚĂŶĚŝĐƌĂŌ ŝŶƚŽƚŚĞŽŶĨĞƌĞŶĐĞǁŚĞƌĞLJŽƵǁŝůůŚĂǀĞĂƉŽƐƐŝďŝůŝƚLJƚŽĞdžƉůŽƌĞůŽĐĂůƚŽƵĐŚ͘zŽƵǁŝůů ĂůƐŽŚĂǀĞĂƵŶŝƋƵĞĂŶĚĨĂŶƚĂƐƟĐŽƉƉŽƌƚƵŶŝƚLJƚŽŵĞĞƚĐŽůůĞĂŐƵĞƐĂŶĚĨƌŝĞŶĚƐĨƌŽŵ ĂůůŽǀĞƌƚŚĞǁŽƌůĚ͘zŽƵǁŝůůďĞĂďůĞƚŽůĞĂƌŶĂůŽƚĨƌŽŵĞĂĐŚŽƚŚĞƌ͕ƐŚĂƌĞŝŶĨŽƌŵĂƟŽŶ between yourselves, create new contacts and friends for the future and this is the place to do all this.
