FROM THE HEAD
Recent months have seen the media painting a
depressing picture of the state of education in the
UK in the twenty-first century. Articles proliferate
which discuss at length falling standards
academically, a reduction in sporting involvement
and achievement, a general malaise and apathy
among the young. This depiction could not be
more out of kilter with the current mood at the
RGS. One of the joys of reflecting upon the last
academic year and reading in The Review just
a selection of the very many achievements of our
community is that it highlights the genuine pride
which the boys have in their performance in every
aspect of school life.
Boys ... have acquitted
themselves magnificently
while also being excellent
ambassadors for the School
At the beginning of the academic year, I would never have imagined that I would be reflecting upon the UK Champion in the Microsoft
Office Competition 2012; national sporting success in canoeing, fencing, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, to name but a few; winning
the national ifs Student Investor Challenge; the World Record for the most people writing in multiple venues; or having the series
winner and champion of the television series Countdown.
These and many other successes are mentioned in The Review; however, necessarily, it is highly selective and only provides
a snapshot which overlooks a far deeper, richer story of the year. Boys have immersed themselves in academia, art, charity,
community, drama, extra-curricular activities, music and so forth and have acquitted themselves magnificently while also being
excellent ambassadors for the School.
The current climate means that the boys do face many challenges ahead of them: there is currently a clampdown on grade inflation in
public examinations, places on the most popular courses at the leading universities continue to be competitive, the difficulties of the
job market are well publicised. What gives me great confidence, however, are the spirit and pride of RGS boys, their willingness to
take each and every challenge in their stride, and, equally importantly, with a smile on their faces. RGS boys never cease to surprise
me and I look forward to reporting on their many and varied successes in the coming twelve months.

DRAMA
An exciting year saw a number of firsts for
drama at the RGS as opportunities abounded for
productions throughout the School and beyond.
Professional workshops, including sessions on
trauma make-up and circus skills, added to the
boys’ repertoires.
Guys and Dolls
Commedia
dell
Arte
A double bill of Commedia dell’Arte plays, The False Turk and The Flying
Doctor, entertained audiences with high energy and physical performances.
The boys excelled themselves in the slapstick and pantomimic plays,
complete with traditional commedia character half masks. High points
included Thomas Gumbrell shocking the audience with unexpected
somersaults in and out of a window and drinking fresh urine (or rather apple
juice).
The joint RGS and GHS drama production of Guys and Dolls was an
explosion of colour, energy and exuberance as for a few days Guildford
High School was transformed into 1950s Manhattan. The impressive set
with its iconic skyline and advertising hoardings immediately immersed
the audience in a world of gambling, guys, cheesecake, strudel and dolls.
This was a truly ensemble production with the Hot Box girls glamorous
and stylish and the Missionaries suitably demure. Jack Morris was
outstanding in the lead role of Sky Masterson and he was
ably supported by Xavier Peer whose sympathetic
and detailed performance of the fixer and gambler,
Nathan Detroit, was mesmerising. Among a
succession of timeless, well-known songs, Dewi
Eburne’s rendition of Sit down, you’re rocking the
boat was a real highlight. With a cast, crew and
orchestra of over one hundred, this musical was
one of the most ambitious and memorable
productions in recent years as Broadway
came to the streets of Guildford.

Macbeth
A joint RGS and Tormead cast performed
an abridged version of Macbeth as
part of this year’s Shakespeare Schools
Festival (SSF). The SSF is the UK’s
largest youth drama festival involving
over 700 schools and 90 theatres
across the country. A very talented
and committed company included
Jack Morris’ charismatic portrayal
of Macbeth, which demonstrated
real power and emotional maturity,
fantastically supported by the soldierwitches William Cowie, Philip Grace
and Alexander Hartley. Andrew
White was commanding as King
Duncan with Christopher Cooksley
and Edward Cook as his sons. A really
strong sense of the military environment
Lord of the Flies
Audiences enjoyed an outstanding production of
William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a challenging
play which required the actors to convey the
emotional range and subtlety of the characters
as well as the more playful aspects of boys going
wild, unencumbered by authority. The cast was
exceptional in embracing these challenges and
gave mature and moving performances with real
depth and understanding. William Cowie portrayed Piggy with real pathos and truthfulness;
Nicholas Hall playing Ralph gave an equally
heartfelt and moving rendition of the honesty
and decency of the character ultimately wrecked
by grief at the close of the play. James Fairley
as Jack and Matthew Side as Roger were able
subtly to reveal the power dynamics between the
two characters as they vied for ultimate power
through intimidation and fear. The rest of the
cast was equally accomplished and the quality
of acting was highly impressive supported
by atmospheric staging, lighting and music
which perfectly captured the essence of
the island as tension and fear permeated
the action.
was provided by tightly choreographed
battle sequences and inventive
camouflage netting. Christopher Hore
played Banquo as a suspicious and
fretful man and Alexander Bowes gave
a strong performance as the fearsome
Macduff. Live drumming and percussion
were provided onstage by Gregory
Chapman and Benjamin Hawken
giving the whole performance immediacy,
excitement and threat.

MUSIC
An exciting year for music at the RGS included the opening
of the new Music School, an ambitious tour of Malta and a
succession of concerts of exquisite quality.
Concerts
Concerts were regularly performed throughout the year ranging from
the intimate to the grand scale. As well as the regular fixtures such as
the Market Day Concerts in Holy Trinity Church and the Carol Service in
Guildford Cathedral, there were a whole host of other events.
Highlights of the year included: the Big Band, alongside Vivace Chorus,
performing as part of a fund-raising concert; the Concerto Consort’s
performance of Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, concluding with an excellent
rendition of Beethoven’s First Symphony; and the Joint Schools’ Chamber
Choir singing evensong in Winchester Cathedral. The Ensembles Concert
featured the Big Band, Second Orchestra, Concert Band, a clarinet trio
and the RGS Saxophone quartet, The Quartertones. A major concert in
Holy Trinity Church saw fifteen solo pianists performing. The concert
opened with the Vivaldi Double Cello Concerto with Duncan Hampshire
and Michael Lan and the programme also included Constant Lambert’s
extraordinary work, The Rio Grande, which featured the Parents’
Choir and Eric Foster. Director of Music Peter White aired his new
composition, Carnival 2, a piece which took its inspiration from SaintSaëns’ much-loved Carnival of the Animals.
Renowned tenor soloist Tom Hobbs gave a wonderful rendition of
songs by Britten and Schubert; Old Guildfordian Joseph Butler gave
a scintillating performance of sonatas for ‘cello by Debussy, Kodály,
Prokofiev and Wellesz. The courtyard of the Old Building provided an
atmospheric setting for the complex and challenging performances of
Dido and Aeneas.
... the new Music School was shortlisted in
the ‘Guildford Design Awards’ making the
final eight out of over 200

Musician of the
Year
The Musician of the Year Competition
was held in the Rehearsal Room of the
new Music Department and the quality
of musicianship was fitting for such
impressive surroundings and acoustics. The
adjudicator was the academic, author and
broadcaster, Eric Levi, who praised highly
the Sixth Form finalists: Joseph Fell, Eric
Foster, Daniel Innes, Michael Lan and
Freddie McGee. Eric Foster, however, was
deservedly crowned Musician of the Year
for his exceptional piano recital of music by
Kabalevsky, Debussy and Slavicky.
Music School
The state-of-the-art Music School opened
at the beginning of the year providing
facilities appropriate for music-making at
the very highest level. Built sensitively
among the Tudor Buildings and using glass
and stone to complement the traditional
surroundings, the new Music School was
shortlisted in the ‘Guildford Design Awards’
making the final eight out of over 200
entries. The Music School now provides
all the facilities and resources required in
the twenty-first century; of particular note
is the Rehearsal Room with its impressive
wooden vaulted ceiling and impressive
acoustics making for an atmospheric
environment for musical performance.
MUSIC
Notes
Malta Music
Tour
A joint choral and orchestral tour of Malta,
comprising 60 of the best musicians from
both the RGS and GHS, crammed ten
performances into a few intense days.
The orchestra and choir performed to
a remarkably high standard in some of
the most amazing venues that the island
has to offer, often in very hot conditions.
Particular highlights included singing Mass
in St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta and
an outstanding performance of Dvorak’s
New World Symphony under the dome of
the Mosta Rotunda. Notable solos were
performed by Joseph Fell in the second
movement of the Dvorak while Frederick
Money, Benedict Philipp and Samuel
Clarke took the tenor and bass solos
in Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G Major.
Appreciative audiences commented upon
the extraordinary level of musicianship and
professionalism in performance as the tour
left a lasting impression.
Eric Foster accepted a place
as the Organ Scholar at St
John’s College, Oxford; three
Upper Sixth Form boys also
have places to read Music at
Oxford University.
James Palles-Clark has
performed regularly in
the National Children’s
Orchestra.
An orchestra of over 70
young players from the RGS,
Lanesborough and St Thomas
of Canterbury combined
to perform in a concert
celebrating the RGS string
schemes.
In addition to the regular
lunch-time concerts, the
Junior and Intermediate
prize winners performed at a
recital at Holy Trinity Church.

TEAM SPORT
The philosophy of Sport for All was very much in evidence
throughout the year as the School regularly put out over 20
teams on a Saturday. As well as the major sports, boys had the
opportunity to participate in a rich array of other sports.
Hockey
Rugby The last twelve months saw RGS rugby players grabbing the headlines
and continuing their development by playing at the very highest level
after leaving the School. Current Harlequins first team player Jack
Clifford captained the victorious Under 20 England rugby team in
the Junior Rugby World Cup, including their first ever victory against
the All Blacks. Jack was also nominated for the IRB Junior Player
of the Year. Harry Little made his debut for the London Broncos in
the Rugby League Superleague and was voted player’s player of the
match. Recent leavers Alastair Adam-Cairns, Tom Hilton-Stevens and
Matthew Shorthose have been regularly representing Oxford University
1st XV and Jamie Crawford has been impressing for Cambridge
University as they look to emulate Karl Outen who has represented
the Blues in the past two seasons. Michael MacFarlane was awarded
Esher Rugby Club’s player of the season, while Tom Sergeant is now
playing for Richmond Rugby Club. Following in their footsteps, current
students James Chaumeton and James Sweetland have both been
involved in the Harlequins School of Rugby. The strength in depth for
RGS rugby is notable with the Under 13A team in particular having
enjoyed an exceptional season which included winning the Highfield
10s trophy for the first time in the School’s history.
12
Hockey continued to thrive at the RGS as
the School received recognition on the
county stage throughout the age groups. In the county tournaments, the RGS are
current Under 15 Surrey Champions. The
team was undefeated throughout the whole
tournament winning all four games, scoring
an incredible 17 goals in the process and,
equally impressively, only conceding one
goal. The Under 14 and Under 18 teams
also flew the flag for the RGS by finishing
runners-up. The 1st XI, in particular,
impressed during the year with an elevenmatch winning run including excellent
victories against Cranleigh School and
Portsmouth Grammar School; Christopher
Way led the goal-scoring charts with 27
goals for the season and he also played
National League hockey. James Ferguson
became Guildford Hockey Club’s youngest
ever National League player. With the
School regularly having 20 different teams
representing the School on a Saturday, from
the 1st XI all the way down to the Under 12D
team, the future for hockey is exciting.

SPORTS
HEADLINES
Athletics: In an athletics meeting at Tonbridge,
the RGS took their largest athletics team for over
ten years which produced an extraordinary 18
personal bests including Daniel Allchurch in both
the 800 and 400 metres and Fraser Mills with a
sensational time of 54.4 for 400 metres. The junior
and intermediate teams also qualified for the English
Schools Athletics Regional Final.
Football
The reputation of RGS football has continued to soar as the 1st XI dominated this year’s
fixture list, securing 15 victories out of 17 fixtures. A ten-match winning streak with
53 goals scored and only five conceded only served to underline the credentials of RGS
football. Captained by Neville Marsh, the current squad is one of the strongest to
have worn the famous red RGS kit, playing a stylish and technical brand of football.
Football at the RGS continues to go from strength to strength with the School now a
strong and established member of the Independent Schools’ football circuit. Highlights
of a successful season for the 1st XI included reaching the London and South East
England Cup semi-final and the Trinity Cup quarter-final.
Chess: The RGS chess team competed in the
English Chess Federation rapid-play tournament;
from the fourteen teams taking part, the RGS
finished second, an outstanding achievement.
Cricket: Alexander Sweet has been involved
in the Under 15 England Development Programme
Talent Testing at the National Cricket Performance
Centre in Loughborough.
Golf: Michael Dove represented Surrey Schools
in a match against Middlesex Schools; Michael won
his match to help Surrey win the overall fixture.
Cricket
New Head of Cricket Chris Sandbach made an immediate impact upon RGS cricket
as he brought success and sunshine in equal measure. Competing in the 50/40 South
London Schools League, the RGS 1st XI finished top after recording notable victories
against schools including Hampton, KCS Wimbledon, Reeds and St Paul’s, as well
as a win against the MCC. Central to the success of the team were the majestic
innings of Charles Warren, highlights of which were 104 against Hampton and 107*
against Reeds. Charles captained the team intelligently and led by example with the
bat. The bowling attack was equally exciting: one of the highlights being Alexander
Waghorn’s hat-trick against Trinity School. With a number of talented young cricketers
emerging, the future of RGS cricket is very exciting as illustrated by Fourth Form student,
Alexander Sweet. Alexander made his debut for the 1st XI against the MCC and went
on to score 115 in a match-winning performance which demonstrated real poise and
maturity. Hockey: Edward Way has been selected for
the England Hockey’s Under 15 High Performance
Academy Centre.
Judo: Oliver Platt took part in the British Judo
Championship; he won five of his six fights and
finished third in his weight, winning a bronze medal.
He also competed as a member of the England
Judo Squad at the International Judo competition
in Holland, one of the biggest international
competitions of the year with 1,500 competitors
from 28 countries.
Skiing: Toby Fitzsimmons was selected for
the English Schools’ Ski Association training camp
in Norway which prepares a team for the biennial
World Schools’ Championships.
Swimming: Calum Ferguson is County
Champion having won the 100 metre butterfly event
at the Surrey School’s Swimming Association Gala.
Tennis: In the St George’s Weybridge Pairs
Invitation Tournament, Benjamin Baker and
Marcus Solarz Hendriks played outstanding
tennis to win the Plate Competition, despite being
two years younger than their opponents in the final.

TRIPS
One academic year. Over a hundred trips. Academic, adventurous, cultural, sporting. All year
groups. All corners of the globe. All unforgettable opportunities and experiences. The following
are just a few, very selective highlights.
USA
On the Sixth Form trip to New York
and Washington, the boys experienced
the economic and political heart of
the world’s most powerful democracy.
Visits included the Federal
Reserve, the 9/11 Memorial, the
Statue of Liberty, the Empire State
Building and a buzzing pre-election
Washington.
France
90 boys and 10 members of staff
embarked upon the Junior and Senior
ski trips based in Tignes and Alpe
d’Huez respectively. Heavy snowfall
provided superb skiing and snowboarding
conditions. Evening activities ranged
from the mentally stimulating to the
physically demanding, including a
challenging high-ropes course.

COMMUNITY AND CHARITY
RGS boys continued to make an impact upon the world outside the RGS as
they seized the initiative to involve themselves in community and charitable
events with humour, energy and enthusiasm.
Charity Day
Charitable events abounded throughout the year as
individuals, Tutor Groups, Houses and year groups participated
in a range of ambitious and enterprising charitable fundraising events. The highlight of the year, however, was Charity
Day where in traditional manner, staff and boys alike threw
themselves – quite literally – into an array of events which
were all united by humour and a desire to raise significant
sums of money. Highlights included the rendition by the
Senior Management Team, under their alias of F01 Direction,
of What makes you beautiful, the alarmingly competitive staff
against boys dodgeball match, and the equally edgy cerebral
challenge of staff against returning Old Guildfordians, all of
whom had taken part in University Challenge on television.
£6,400 was raised for the charities chosen by the boys: the
RGS international link schools in Cambodia and Nepal, Help for
Heroes, Shooting Star CHASE and Tuk Tuk Travels.
