DONORS a n d Vo l u n t e e r L e a d e r s h i p CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 33 Left to right: John Wetenhall, President, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, Bill Snyder with wife Verna Corey, and Dolly Ellenberg, Vice President, Development 34 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 T hree months ago, I was honored to begin my tenure as the ninth president of Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. In the relatively short amount of time since then, I have learned so much about this wonderful organization. Perhaps most importantly, I have learned that the Pittsburgh community truly loves its Carnegie Museums. Our members and donors feel an intense pride in the museums they help support. The entire region rightly feels that Carnegie Museums is an indelible part of this community and its reputation globally—every bit as important to Pittsburgh as its diverse industrial base, its burgeoning health and education communities, its great sports teams, and its iconic three rivers. And Pittsburghers financially support the museums they love. Some 116 years after Andrew Carnegie became the face of modern philanthropy, his “palace of culture”— which has blossomed into four museums—continues to enjoy the support of so many thoughtful, generous, forward-looking people. William P. (Bill) Snyder III is one such person. Bill got his start in the Shenango Furnace Company, which was founded by his grandfather in 1906. He would go on to play a role in Pittsburgh’s first Renaissance, serve as president and chairman of The Wilpen Group, Inc., and share his considerable talents as a board member for a number of institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Allegheny Health, Education, and Research Foundation, for which he served as chairman. Bill has also distinguished himself through his great devotion to Carnegie Museums, which he has supported financially and through his volunteer leadership for nearly three decades. Last November, Carnegie Museums honored him and 51 other individuals and organizations as the inaugural members of its newly formed Carnegie Noble Quartet Society, which will now recognize in perpetuity those donors whose total contributions to Carnegie Museums meet, and in many cases far exceed, $1 million. The society was aptly named for the bronze sculptures that grace the front of our historic Oakland facility— sculptures of Shakespeare, Michelangelo, Bach, and Galileo. These figures loom large in representing the redeeming and elevating qualities of literature, art, music, and science, all of which were part of Andrew Carnegie’s great gift to the city of Pittsburgh. Bill and his colleagues in the Carnegie Noble Quartet Society are wonderful reminders of the great generosity that makes our continued good work possible. They lead from their hearts and by example. They are far from alone, however, as you can see by the people and organizations listed in this special thank you to donors. Our four museums rely on this support to reach more than 1.2 million people annually through their exhibitions, educational programming, and community outreach. We owe a special debt of gratitude to our tireless volunteers who were so instrumental in our fundraising efforts for 2010, led by Toto Fisher (another Noble Quartet inductee, along with husband, Jim), who chaired the Major Gifts Committee, and Vaughan Blaxter, chair of the Individual Gifts Committee. With the support of our volunteer committees, we raised $18.5 million in total contributions in 2010, including $6.7 million for our Annual Fund. This is no small task, especially in a sluggish economy. I think it is also important to note that membership in Carnegie Museums continues to be strong, as we have more than 25,000 member households, a clear demonstration of the value the residents of our region place in our museums. To our many members and donors who make up the Carnegie Museums community—thank you! Your support inspires us every day. It was a fitting decision, says Beverlee, because not only did her father show and teach there, but his attachment to the museum sparked her family’s lifelong love affair with museums. “ I grew up at Carnegie Museums. I’m still magnetized by museums. Wherever we travel, “I grew up at the Carnegie Museums and so did my siblings,” says Beverlee, recalling frequent childhood museums always visits with her father, a professor of painting and come first.” design at Carnegie Institute of Technology’s (now Carnegie Mellon University’s) School of Architecture for — Beverlee McFadden 42 years. Raymond, who emigrated to Pittsburgh from Pescina, Italy, as a child, also taught painting classes throughout the region, including the museum’s renowned Saturday Art Classes. “I’m still magnetized by museums,” adds Beverlee. “Wherever we travel, museums always come first.” Initially a portraitist and figurative painter, Raymond’s repertoire broadened to include Pittsburgh scenes and urbanscapes; three stunning examples are currently on view at the museum. Raymond’s artwork also appeared in four Carnegie Internationals. Now, the McFaddens’ gift recognizes his long-lasting contributions to Pittsburgh by dedicating Gallery 11 of the Scaife Galleries in his memory. Gallery 11 showcases American and European Art c. 1925-1950. “My father was never without inspiration from the city,” says Beverlee, an industrial photographer who shares that passion despite the fact that she and her husband, a Nobel Laureate in Economics, have long called California home. “It’s the most beautiful thing to grow up with art, surrounded by all that color and design coming from a very creative person,” she adds. “Other kids went home and just did their homework. I can’t imagine living without my father’s paintings on my walls.” CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 39 $500 – $999 Ruth Casey Dr. and Mrs. E. Joseph Charny Margaret O. Childs Sally Hillman Childs Mark J. That’s precisely the reason Bombardier Transportation’s longtime commitment to the Science Center is as strong as it’s ever been, says Mike Fetsko, vice president “ There’s a natural fit of the Americas Region for the Systems Division of Bombardier, a world leader in between what our mass transit systems with operations in West Mifflin, Pa. business is all about ... “There’s a natural fit between what our business is all about, with engineering and innovation at its core, and the goals of the Science Center bringing science alive for kids,” says Mike, who also serves on the Science Center’s board and is a donor along with his wife, Tricia, and their three children. and the goals of the Science Center bringing science alive for kids.” — Mike Fetsko “There’s a shortage of engineers, a shortage of young people going into the necessary academic areas to become engineers. So for us, through our partnership with the Science Center, we’re helping to promote that interest from a young age. Hopefully, we can hire some of these kids when they’re ready to get out into the workforce.” Bombardier and the Science Center first joined efforts in 1994, when the North Shore attraction was still fairly new. Today, its support bridges the old and the new: Bombardier helps fund the Regional SciTech Initiative, the Science Center’s workforce development initiative that reaches thousands of kids each year with its wide array of science and technology programming; and the company also sponsors one of the Science Center’s oldest and most popular exhibits, its world-renowned Miniature Railroad & Village®. CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 41 PHOTO: RIC EVANS Jim and Kathe Patrinos with Eric Shiner, Milton Fine Curator of Art and Acting Director of The Andy Warhol Museum KATHE AND JIM PATRINOS share a love and enthusiasm for Carnegie Museums, which they dub one of western Pennsylvania’s greatest assets. For these longtime supporters, it’s all about the museums’ ability to touch, change, “ Whether it’s history, dinosaurs, great art or architecture, [the and enrich the lives of people of all ages. museums] get kids “No matter what their backgrounds, these involved in learning.” museums take kids to another place,” says Jim, who volunteers as a member of the Individual — Jim Patrinos Gifts Committee and is owner of Pittsburgh’s famous restaurant chain, Primanti Bros., as well as his family’s business, Patrinos Painting and Contracting Co. in Bethel Park. “They connect them to the world. Whether it’s history, dinosaurs, great art or architecture, they get kids involved in learning.” The couple’s involvement began about 15 years ago when Kathe answered an ad seeking volunteer docents at Carnegie Museum of Art. After completing a two-year training program, she began providing tours for students and found that she loved talking about art and sharing it with others. Today, she’s a member of The Warhol’s board and is the lead docent for a special Museum of Art program called In the Moment, which provides tours for visitors living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. “Each visit, I choose a theme and ask questions pertaining to the artwork we are viewing,” Kathe says. “Sometimes the questions trigger a memory and I see a sparkle in their eyes. Even though they won’t remember it, I really enjoy engaging them, seeing their reactions … sometimes a smile, a sentence, or even a conversation.” Together, Kathe and Jim also make a meaningful difference through generous annual operating support as members of the Carnegie Founder’s Society, through financial support of ARTventures, Carnegie Museum of Art’s weekend activities for families, and through membership in a pair of giving societies that help fund exhibitions: The Warhol’s Inner Circle and Carnegie Museum of Art’s Fellows. 42 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 (Italics) Member of Carnegie Patrons Circle or Corporate Member Wayne and Connie Maue Mrs. Robert J. Swettlen David and Cindy Tambellini Kate and Howard Tanning Aavin, Nupur, Daevan, and Vikram AAVIN AND DAEVAN MANGALMURTI are serious fans of Carnegie Museums, especially the treasure trove of “stuff” at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. “It has lots of stuff that I like,” says Daevan, 8. “I like the birds, the dinosaurs are cool, the Native Americans, gems and minerals, and the Egyptians.” Aavin, 4, agrees: “I like birds, and dinosaurs, and I like to see all the rocks and minerals.” “The museums are our encyclopedia,” says their mother, Nupur Dashottar, a physician with Family Practice Medical Association South. And it shows. Already, Daevan boasts an almost encyclopedic knowledge of much of what he’s seen at the museum. “He has to read every label!” Nupur exclaims. Nupur and her husband, Vikram Mangalmurti, vice president of healthcare reform at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, moved to Pittsburgh about 15 years ago from Washington, D.C., and they were pleasantly surprised by what they found. “Pittsburgh is a relatively small town, yet it has this really impressive museum system,” Vikram says. “ Our kids use these museums a lot, and we believe you have to support the things that are important to you.” — Vikram Mangalmurti “We became more involved with the museums when Daevan was around 4 and we put him in his first museum camps over the summer,” Nupur recounts. “He absolutely loved it, and they continue to spark his interest.” Now Aavin is joining his brother as a Carnegie Museums camper. “Our kids use these museums a lot,” Vikram says, “and we believe you have to support the things that are important to you.” They’re doing that now as Carnegie Museums Patrons. The family particularly enjoys bringing out-of-town visitors to the museums that have become such a big part of their lives. “Our friends and family are always amazed at how spectacular these museums are—especially dinosaur hall,” says Nupur. Many of them come from Washington, D.C., she adds, “and our museums here are so much more accessible.” CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 43 PHOTO: STAN FRANZOS Debbie Dick (right) with Lynn Zelevansky, The Henry J. Heinz II Director, Carnegie Museum of Art AS PRESIDENT OF THE WOMEN’S COMMITTEE of Carnegie Museum of Art, Debbie Dick rarely has a dull moment, and that suits her just fine. On any given day, you might find her hard at work on the Art in Bloom fundraiser, greeting visitors at Senior Citizens Day, attending a Museum of Art board meeting, or beginning plans for the committee’s annual holiday tree party. “The Women’s Committee has a 54-year tradition of fundraising and friend-raising for the museums,” she says proudly. “It’s my privilege to help ensure the ongoing success of this vital organization.” “ Every time I enter the museums, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride that this venerable and historic — yet diverse and exciting — institution is here in our community.” Debbie’s passion for Carnegie Museums started with — Debbie Dick frequent childhood visits to the Oakland museums. Following college, she was hired as assistant to the curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Art, and later became an assistant to former museum director Leon Arkus. Like her parents, Debbie made museum visits a regular part of life for her own three children. Once they were grown, she re-engaged as a volunteer dynamo, co-chairing a Carnegie International gala and dedicating herself to raising operating support across all four museums as chair of the Annual Fund campaign. Today, Debbie continues to advocate for operating support as a member of the Individual Gifts Committee. She is a longtime Annual Fund donor at the Curator’s Society level and made a significant unrestricted commitment to the Building the Future campaign. While art is her first love (she also is a Museum of Art Fellow), the total scope of Carnegie Museums never ceases to amaze her: “Every time I enter the museums,” she says, “I feel an overwhelming sense of pride that this venerable and historic—yet diverse and exciting— institution is here in our community. It is so rewarding to be in a vibrant environment full of wonderful people who are dedicated to sustaining a treasure that belongs to all.” 44 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 (Italics) Member of Carnegie Patrons Circle or Corporate Member Margaret Tarpey and Bruce Freeman Dr. and Mrs. James A. The museums have also been top-of-mind family destinations for generations. “Art and craftsmanship are important in our lives,” says Graham, “and the Carnegie Museums are great places to experience them. A visitor leaves with a better appreciation and understanding of art, maybe wanting to purchase artwork or, better yet, wanting to make their own. Who wouldn’t want to support that?” “There’s something for everyone at the museums,” adds Jim, who takes Graham’s four children to the museums several times a month. Theron, 10, a geologist in the making, is inspired by Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems at the Museum of Natural History, and Highmark SportsWorks® at the Science Center is a favorite among his sisters, Marian, 8, Lilah, 5, and Rainiah, 3. “My sister and I have lots of fond memories of walking around the Scaife Galleries with our father when we were kids; the galleries always feel like home,” says Graham, who today also counts the Museum of Natural History’s Bird Hall among his favorite spots. “And one of the first places we bring out-of-towners is The Warhol. It’s a great museum and distinctly Pittsburgh. The museums are an important part of the city—a part that makes us proud of our hometown.” CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 47 “ Their giving came from a heartfelt desire to improve the community and the organizations that they loved.” — Sally Davoren Virginia and Charles E. Kaufman CHARLES KAUFMAN had a passion for science. His sister Virginia Kaufman loved the arts. Their recent bequests to Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh are a testament not only to their interests, but also to their shared belief that philanthropy makes the world a better place. The Kaufmans had deep roots in western Pennsylvania. They were born and raised in Clarion, Pa., descendants of two of the town’s original settlers. As a partner with Pittsburgh graphic arts firm Penn-Art Associates for more than 50 years, Virginia was a pioneering female advertising executive. Charles began his career as a chemical engineer with Pittsburgh-based Hagan Corporation, which later became Calgon Corporation. Following his retirement from Calgon in the 1970s, he became an active entrepreneur, investor, and conservationist. Although both contributed during their lifetimes to organizations they loved, the full extent of their philanthropy wasn’t known until after they died. Virginia, who died in 2008 at age 90, bequeathed a percentage of the residue of her estate to Carnegie Museum of Art to establish the Virginia Kaufman Fund in support of art exhibitions or acquisitions. The museum has received $3.7 million as a result of the bequest—“a transformative gift,” says Lynn Zelevansky, The Henry J. Heinz II Director of Carnegie Museum of Art. Charles died in 2010 at the age of 97. His bequest of $1 million to Carnegie Museum of Natural History established the Charles E. Kaufman Fund to support projects associated with the interplay of evolution and the development of human civilization. “This gift will be the cornerstone of the museum’s Center for World Cultures and Diversity,” says Sam Taylor, director of Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The names of Charles and Virginia Kaufman are likely to become more well known now than they were during their lifetimes. Recognition was never a motivating factor for them, says Sally Davoren, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh’s director of development, art and gift planning, who knew the Kaufmans for more than a decade. “They were unassuming, hard-working people,” she says. “Their giving came from a heartfelt desire to improve the community and the organizations that they loved.” 48 CARNEGIE • SUMMER 2011 (Italics) Member of Carnegie Patrons Circle or Corporate Member * Current Trustee/Museum Board Member (+) Deceased Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh Trustees Cornice Society Members Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh gratefully recognizes the following Cornice Society Members who have made bequests or other planned gifts to the museums.
