It was not only the home of the Renaissance but home to some of the most celebrated artists, writers, and scientists as well. Thanks to its rich history and its linguistic and cultural uniqueness, it is one of the oldest most well-known Italian regions with its historical, artistic, and literary patrimony setting it apart from the rest of the world. Cradle not only to the Italian language and the arts but also splendid in itself, with beautiful landscapes and villages that make the past come alive. Lovers of tradition come here to discover the simple and genuine flavors of its cuisine, wines and oil for which it is famous throughout the world. 2 A 2014 program SEMINAR AND MEETING PLACE: Montecatini Terme Montecatini Terme lies in the heart of the enchanting Tuscan countryside, the crossroads of Etruscan, Roman, and medieval cultures. From Montecatini Terme you can easily reach cities famous for their art, such as Florence, Pisa, Siena, Lucca and San Giminiano; coastal cities such as Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi; natural oases to name a few Padule di Fucecchio, the Apuane Alps and the mountains of Pistoia. The town’s history is inextricably linked to that of its water. However, little is known of its ancient origins. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the use of its thermal baths and the development of the area felt the effects of the bloody battles and raids which took place there. In 1737 Tuscany passed into Austrian hands and then in 1763 was awarded to Peter Leopold: who was the true founder and patron of Montecatini as well as the architect of its rebirth as the center of thermal baths. In the early 1900s Montecatini was already one of the most talked about thermal baths in Europe, 3 host to royalty, artists, and writers of international fame such as: Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni, Toscanini, Leoncavallo, sculptors, painters, artists like Duprè, Chini, Annigoni and Dalì. Christian Dior spent the last days of his life at Montecatini, where he died in 1957. Montecatini became known as « la Piccola Montecitorio » for his constant presence in Italian politics. The small medieval villages near Montecatini are particularly picturesque: Montecatini Alto, which is reachable via the ancient cable railway and offers an extraordinary panoramic view of the Nievole Valley. A creative day at Montecatini thermal baths The thermal baths, around which nine spas (Excelsior, Redi, Grocco, La Salute, Leopoldine, Regina, Tamerici, Tettuccio, Torretta) have been built, are the treasure of Montecatini. « Tettuccio » is a symbol of the town and its glorious past, while believed to be the oldest of the spas. It is a real architectural jewel and known as the « Temple of European Spas ». The structure’s magnificence and rich interior ornamentation represent the best of Montecatini’s thermal architecture. By 1300 it had become known as “Bagno Nuovo” or the « New Baths » and owes its name « Tettuccio » to the small roof constructed to protect it from the spring. After various structural modifications, the « Tettuccio » reached its present appearance at the hands of the architect Giovannozzi. The most recent modifications to be seen are the « Portuguese Room » or « Sala Portoghesi » and the « Living Room » or « Sala di Soggiorno ». Another must see is the « Crocodile Fountain » or the « Fontana dei Coccodrilli » created by the sculptor Tofanari in the early 1900s.
