No article can do justice to encapsulating the breadth and depth of the enormous array
of academic, spiritual, emotional, social and athletic experiences which fill the daily life
of our school. But several highlights of new initiatives this past year provide a glimpse
of this community which we call Moriah.
Our emphasis on instilling in our children the centrality of chesed in Jewish life took
center stage shortly after school began as we all faced the enormous physical and emotional
challenges which Hurricane Sandy brought in its wake. As we continued to hear of the devastating impact of the
storm on towns in Long Island and along the Jersey Shore, the entire Moriah community came together to collect
food supplies, clothing and other necessities. But feeling the need to do something more personal, immediate and
meaningful, Moriah reached out to the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach and extended an invitation to spend a day
at our school. It was a day filled with activity, learning, singing, dancing, davening and socializing and one the
Moriah and HALB students will always remember.
The ruach for which Moriah has long been known continued to flow throughout the year as our Moriah Association
of Parents (MAP) worked with us to launch Moriah Spirit Day, which occurred every Rosh Chodesh. Each month
brought innovative programming based on the theme of the month and integrated General Studies and Jewish
Studies in learning and celebration.
It was also a year of significant expansion in our integration of technology with the curriculum. Online learning
programs such as IXL, Manga High, and Dreambox enhanced our math instruction across the grades, while the
debut of Ariot Kal brought a new level of learning to our First Grade Tal Am curriculum. The Middle School took
one giant leap forward with the introduction of iPads to every sixth grader, and Haiku, our new LMS (Learning
Module System), continued to impress.
These are some of the programs and initiatives that reflect our school and the outstanding faculty, dedicated parents,
and proud students that create our community.
a message from the President
Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends of Moriah,
Evan Sohn
On behalf of the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees, I would like to present
Moriah’s second Annual Report, which reflects the 2012–13 accounting period beginning
July 1, 2012 and ending June 30, 2013. This 2012 –2013 report is a gauge to measure
Moriah’s financial and operational progress and effectiveness.
Moriah is a school in transformation. The recent launch of Moriah’s $2 million BOLD
program, record breaking fundraising initiatives, administration reorganization, focus
on technology integration, our new student life committee and our new social hall are examples of an array of changes
taking place at Moriah. And with MAP’s launch of Spirit Day every Rosh Chodesh, our school pride has never
been greater.
Other schools are following our lead investing in 21st century education. We owe a tremendous ha’karat ha’tov to
BOLD Funders (Avi Chai Foundation, Kohellet Foundation and the Affordable Jewish Education Project)
for awarding Moriah the BOLD Grant you read about.
In planning for 2013 –2014 our committees worked tirelessly to deliver fiscal responsibility without impacting
tuition. A great deal of our success is attributed to the incredible Moriah professional leadership, faculty and staff.
It is inspiring to watch our teachers and administrators embrace new technologies and new methodologies to further
continue Moriah’s quest for educational excellence. The financial presentation in this report reflects the transformation
of Moriah.
Moriah belongs to all of us: parents, administrators, educators, staff and students. As Moriah enters our 49th year,
we look towards its bright and promising future.

Early Childhood:
a look back and a look ahead
L
ast year we experienced
tremendous growth as our
program expanded from
one Nursery and Pre-K
class to three Nursery classes and two
Pre-K classes. This year we continued
our growth bringing our total numbers
to three Nurseries, three Pre-Ks and
three Kindergartens. Our growth
is a testament to our devoted teachers,
supportive Board of Trustees, and
dedicated community.
Our students continue to enjoy their
day-to-day activities that include weekly
gym, art, library, and music specialties.
We also enhance our day-to-day activities
with special programs including
seasonal programs from shofar making
to matzah baking, chesed programs
like our visit to a nursing home and
milestone events including our endof-year celebrations.
This past year we implemented several
new initiatives to enhance our program.
We launched Little Israel, a Hebrew
immersion program led by Morah
Shoshi. Another initiative centered on
mathematics is Math Day, a special day
filled with math activities including
graphing, estimating, and patterning.
Smart tables were introduced to our
Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms this
year as a collaborative tool to enhance
learning in the classroom for both math
and literacy. Our year ended with an
improved Kindergarten graduation.
Every child wore a cap and gown,
walked down the aisle, sang songs and
received his/her own diploma. The event
was live streamed for all family members
who were unable to attend.
This year we will continue to make
enhancements to our program. We are
introducing iPads to our Pre-K and
Kindergarten classrooms as a tool
to practice handwriting. We will also
add a special Science Day. We welcome
parent participation and parent
volunteers. Nothing beats the smile
on a child’s face when their Dad or
Mom attends class to assist with an
activity or run a program.
Looking forward to a terrific year!

Lower School update
T
he past year has been
a year of growth
academically, spiritually
and emotionally at Moriah.
Our students were given opportunities
to experience the richness of our heritage
and the beauty of Jewish life through an
array of special events and programs.
In the first grade, our students began
using Tal Am CAL (computer assisted
learning), interactive software designed
to enhance Hebrew reading and fluency.
In the 3rd grade, students published
their own Hebrew books and our 4th
graders created special productions of
their own Hebrew songs and dances. 5th
grade students continued to learn Ivrit
“in” Israel with the help of sophisticated
distance learning technology.
Thematic units were introduced in all
1st–5th grade classes focusing on
cross-curricular activities and inquiry
based learning. Children delved more
deeply into areas of their own interest
and created presentations showing off
their newly acquired knowledge using
a myriad of technology tools including
Windows Movie Maker, Glogtser, Prezi,
and Google Presentations.
Chesed initiatives throughout the year
such as a Walk-a-thon, which raised
$60,000 for Chai Lifeline and a day of
unity with HALB students from Long
Island who were affected by Hurricane
Sandy, helped our students learn that
true happiness lies in helping others.
We also hosted two shlichot B’nei
Akiva, who instilled in our students
a love of Torat Yisrael and Medinat
Yisrael through programs and activities
they conducted throughout the year.
This past year, our Lower School teachers
participated in various Professional
Development programs including Tal Am
Institutes, Smartboard training, and
MaDyk Hebrew Reading Assessment.
Additionally, Curriculum Maps for all
Jewish and General Studies subjects
were completed reflecting current
“best practices.” This summer a group
of Moriah teachers and administrators
attended the Maytiv Positive Psychology
workshop, a school wide program written
by Harvard professor and author, Tal
Ben Shachar.
The beginning of this year will mark
the launch of M3 (Moriah Multi
Modal), a 21st century educational
transformation plan, increasing student
engagement and student achievement,
through the use of technology and
center-based learning. We will also
work to continue to integrate the Jewish
and General Studies departments with
initiatives such as incorporating Judaic
Studies into our yearly 3rd grade
planetary party. Additionally, we will
introduce L’Havin U’LeHaskil,
a skill-based chumash curriculum into
our 3rd grade classes.
Support Services
M
oriah’s Student Support
Services department values
its commitment to meeting
the academic needs of each
of our students from Early Childhood
through Middle School. This past year
brought many new and exciting initiatives
to our department that have greatly
enhanced the experience of our students
and the breadth of services that we provide.
Spanning technology and hands-on
instruction, we aimed to incorporate
additional evidence-based interventions
to address the diverse needs of our
students and demonstrate our commitment
to educating children in a progressive,
inclusive setting.

Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders
Middle School news
O
ur Middle School students
enjoyed a fabulous year
of exploration, growth,
learning and collaboration.
The entire Middle School became
actively engaged throughout our second
annual Moriah Reads unit. Utilizing
the novel War Horse, the children
explored a variety of WWI themes in
both Secular and Judaic Studies classes,
created art projects, attended cryptology
workshops, and even investigated the
halacha of war. As a culminating event,
the Middle School students spent a
marvelous afternoon in Manhattan
viewing the outstanding Broadway
production of the book.
Names Not Numbers was another
stellar project in which many of our 8th
grade students chose to participate.
After researching and studying what life
had been like during the Holocaust, the
children discovered firsthand just how
difficult and dangerous life really was
during that time, as they interviewed ten
survivors. Each momentous interview
The addition of Jessica Zlatin, SpeechLanguage Therapist, to the Gesher
Yehuda team enabled us to develop a
language based curriculum to remediate
specific areas of difficulty for our students,
including social language, auditory
processing, inferencing skills, and
written expression. Students eagerly
anticipated “Morah Jessica Time” and
greatly benefitted from her creativity,
warmth, and expertise.
The successful school-wide launch
of Learning Ally allowed us to further
individualize reading instruction.
Students in grades 1–8 had the
opportunity to download novels,
was captured on film by our own
students, under the direction of a
professional videographer. The
Names Not Numbers group was
taken through the entire editing
process. An incredible documentary
was produced by the children and
unveiled to the survivors, their families
and the entire Moriah community at
a special dinner and viewing.
As we look ahead, this year will
be filled with many exciting
enhancements, as well. One of
the goals in the Gemara department
is to create greater continuity
and sequential learning of content
and skills while considering the
developmental stages of Middle School
students. The 6th grade will be
delving into the second year program
of Bonayich, a methodical system that
they were introduced to in the 5th grade.
This program will offer the students
an age-appropriate and tiered approach
to first mastering Mishna and a
subsequent structured insertion
of Gemara into the curriculum.
textbooks, and literary works onto
personalized, virtual bookshelves on
individual devices at home and at school
to increase student engagement in the
reading process and offer an auditory
component to complement the visual
mechanics of reading. Research
indicates that when students use
accessible audiobooks, they experience
a 76 percent improvement in reading
comprehension and a 52 percent
improvement in reading accuracy.
The Support Services department
outlined and developed a specialized
curriculum, closely aligned with both
Moriah’s curriculum and the Core
Additionally, we will be piloting an
8th grade electives program, and
expanding our 6th Grade Heritage
Fair unit to dovetail with a global
project entitled, My Family Story,
in collaboration with Beit Hatfutsot
in Israel. All 6th and 7th graders will
be receiving Chrome Books and
will be taken through tech boot
camp, as we continue to utilize and
expand technology as an important
classroom tool.
We look forward to another fantastic year.
Standards. This curriculum will ensure
that our students are gaining the
necessary skills and enjoying a rigorous
learning experience through methods
and techniques designed to allow
for entry points, mastery, and success
in both General and Jewish Studies.
This two-year project that consisted
of professional development, intensive
trainings and workshops, and collaborative
brainstorming in best practices
culminated this year with a thorough
curriculum that highlights grade level
benchmarks in both academic and
social-emotional areas of development.
Kudos to the entire Support Staff
for their extraordinary efforts!

student life
“Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is
not a preparation for life; education is life itself.” – John Dewey
A
ccording to John Dewey,
students thrive when
provided with educational
experiences that enable
them to become accountable, mature,
and responsible members of society.
Accordingly, Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman
Shapira, the Grand Rabbi of Piaseczno
(1889–1943), shared in his book Chovat
HaTalmidim the message that educators
and parents must instill in children
“a vision of his own potential greatness,”
and a child must be encouraged to be
“an active participant in his own
development.” At The Moriah School we
enthusiastically embrace the progressive
psychological and educational philosophies
espoused by Dewey and the Piaczecna
Rebbe. This is reflected in our emphasis
on school-wide social emotional learning
and leadership programs.
At the Lower School level our Judaic
Studies assistant teachers have
been trained by Yael Krumerman,
6
our Early Childhood and Gesher school
psychologist, in an in-house social skills
program entitled Sichot/Conversations.
Twice a week classes meet and explore a
host of topics such as the importance of
respecting classroom rules, friendships,
and social challenges. Monthly thematic
units are introduced by trained assistant
teachers who facilitate class discussions.
Students in 6th through 8th grade
participate in the Middle School
Workshop Series which addresses
developmentally appropriate “hot topics”
that our students may be grappling
with during the distinctive stage of early
adolescence. Organizational skills,
self-management, self-advocacy
strategies, goal setting, inclusiveness,
formal interviews and pro-social skills,
are areas which we tackle in an engaging
manner through our Workshop Series.
Additionally, 8th grade girls participate
in Full of Ourselves: Advancing Girl
Power, Health and Leadership. The
goal of this program is to sustain girls’
health and confidence by promoting
healthy attitudes about eating, exercise
and body image. Jewish values and
traditions are integrated into lessons.
A highlight of this past year was
Rosh Chodesh Adar’s “Upstander
Revolution,” a student-driven schoolwide social emotional learning event.
Moving forward, we are looking to
create additional venues to encourage
this type of student leadership. We will
be launching a unique program entitled
Rodeph Shalom, which was developed
by the Pardes Center for Jewish
Educators. Through the use of Torah
sources, students will learn conflict
resolution strategies and skills. Our
school will be pursuing Rodeph Shalom
certification through Pardes by fulfilling
a prescribed set of criteria and leadership
programming. Through this initiative,
we hope to further create a community
atmosphere that is warm, nurturing,
and welcoming.
Tuition is the primary source of Moriah’s income.
Our net tuition (tuition income net of financial aid
scholarship awards) was $10.9 million for the
2012–2013 school year. Tuition is projected to be
approximately $11 million for the 2013–2014 school
year. The most significant positive variance in the
revenue is $300,000 of reduction in financial aid.
As you know, Moriah has adopted a new financial
policy that included a restructure of financial aid
procedures and a modified abatement program.
These two changes have yielded positive results.
To further elaborate, in 2012–2013 Moriah awarded
$2.1 million in scholarship and abatement while
non-tuition revenue (fund raising) was $1.65 million.
The $500,000 difference had a negative net impact
on total parent tuition-related obligations of about
$1,000 per family. The new financial aid policy has
led to a reduction in financial aid to an anticipated
$1.8 million while the non-tuition revenue is
expected to be approximately $1.58 million.
This represents a projected $220,000 difference,
reducing the net negative impact to $500 per family.
While The Moriah School remains committed
to providing financial assistance in a fair
and equitable manner to all families in need,
continued measures will be taken to balance
this commitment against potential stress on
the school’s financial health.
Operating and Other Expenses
Moriah has consistently worked to lower
expenses wherever possible. In the last year
we have negotiated lower spending on outside
maintenance service, new copier leases and
utility expense. Operating expenses account
for the other 13% of the total expense budget.
The school has increased its spending on
technology essential for the educational and
societal demands of the 21st century. The school
has also increased the reserves in the budget
to replenish for prior year losses.

“
Aaron and I volunteer our time and support
Moriah because of its commitment to teaching
strong religious values, preparing our children
to be successful in the secular and academic
world, and to be strongly devoted to Israel.
I am proud of my association with Moriah
as an alumna, and now as a parent, and I will
continue to dedicate myself to the school
as my parents did in its early years.

Moriah is the local school

After all three of my children graduated,
I felt it important to continue to donate

while generating additional revenue
for years to come.
