What have we traded in to become faithful followers of Christ? Gregory M. Fiore Jean A. Howley Joseph P. Mezzapesa Emily Byrne The answer is different for all of us. Some of us can tell the tale of a dramatic conversion story, leaving behind a life of blatantly selfish indulgence or obviously sinful behavior in order to embrace the call of Jesus. Others of us have been Christians since the day of our baptism as infants and have always walked the path of belief, but perhaps can trace certain moments when we embraced a deeper commitment and resolved to abandon particular behaviors, relationships, or worldly priorities that were in conflict with our faith. Whatever the case, Jesus instructs us today not to look to “what was left behind.” Instead, we are called to keep our focus on what lies ahead, namely, life in Christ and the ultimate hope of union with him in heaven. Keeping this focus can be quite a challenge. So often, it’s tempting to think that the grass is greener somewhere else. As Christians, we can fall into the trap of imagining that it might feel better to be ... something else. Perhaps, seeing others around us whose lives are not shaped by their faith, we might think they have it easier than we do. Or perhaps we get lost in reminiscence about the way things were in the good old days, and thus get distracted from the mission that stands in front of us today. But thoughts like these are not fit for our new life as disciples of Christ. As St. Paul says in today’s epistle, “For freedom Christ set us free.” May we embrace the gift of this true freedom and follow Christ without looking back. Father Joe Help Wanted Rectory Part Time Cook Saturdays 4 to 7:30 pm, Sundays 9am-1 pm Call Father Joe at 631 261 1077 Summary of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) from Pope Francis Chapter eight: “Guiding, discerning and integrating weakness” (291-312) The eighth chapter is an invitation to mercy and pastoral discernment in situations that do not fully match what the Lord proposes. The Pope uses three very important verbs: guiding, discerning and integrating, which are fundamental in addressing fragile, complex or irregular situations. The chapter has sections on the need for gradualness in pastoral care; the importance of discernment; norms and mitigating circumstances in pastoral discernment; and finally what the Pope calls the “logic of pastoral mercy”. Chapter eight is very sensitive. In reading it one must remember that “the Church’s task is often like that of a field hospital”. Here the Holy Father grapples with the findings of the Synods on controversial issues. He reaffirms what Christian marriage is and adds that “some forms of union radically contradict this ideal, while others realise it in at least a partial and analogous way”. The Church therefore “does not disregard the constructive elements in those situations which do not yet or no longer correspond to her teaching on marriage”. As far as discernment with regard to “irregular” situations is concerned, the Pope states: “There is a need ‘to avoid judgements which do not take into account the complexity of various situations’ and ‘to be attentive, by necessity, to how people experience distress because of their condition’”. And he continues: “It is a matter of reaching out to everyone, of needing to help each person find his or her proper way of participating in the ecclesial community, and thus to experience being touched by an ‘unmerited, unconditional and gratuitous’ mercy”. And further: “The divorced who have entered a new union, for example, can find themselves in a variety of situations, which should not be pigeonholed or fit into overly rigid classifications leaving no room for a suitable personal and pastoral discernment”. In this line, gathering the observations of many Synod Fathers, the Pope states that “the baptised who are divorced and civilly remarried need to be more fully integrated into Christian communities in the variety of ways possible, while avoiding any occasion of scandal”. “Their participation can be expressed in different ecclesial services… Such persons need to feel not as excommunicated members of the Church, but instead as living members, able to live and grow in the Church… This integration is also needed in the care and Christian upbringing of their children”. -4- Sacrificial Giving 2016 2015 Did We Take a Step? June 19, 2016 June 21, 2015 Decrease $19,672.42 $20,784.64 ($ 1,112.22) In today’s second reading, St. Paul provides a wonderful one-sentence summary of Christian stewardship: “Out of love, place yourselves at one another’s service.” FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE: Our parish now offers Online Giving, a web -based electronic contribution application. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world. Father Thomas A. Judge Council Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual blood drive on Wednesday, July 13th at their council hall in Hewitt Square, East Northport. Our blood drive will run from 3:00pm – 8:30pm. The Knights of Columbus will be taking appointments for their blood drive the weekend of July 2-3 after all Masses. To sign- up, fill out an appointment slip and leave it in the box as you leave church. You will receive a confirmation of your appointment in the mail. Each summer blood reserves drop to dangerously low levels. This year is no different. Perhaps you have seen the emergency appeals for blood on television or heard the announcement on the radio. Please consider bringing a family member or a friend with you to the blood drive. The Knights of Columbus thank everyone who has donated in the past, no matter where you donated. Donating a pint of blood is truly giving the gift of life. -21- Parish Calendar SUNDAY June 26th MONDAY June 27th TUESDAY June 28th WEDNESDAY June 29th THURSDAY June 30th Set up for Feast Set up for Feast Set up for Feast Family Feast and ENTIRE PARISH HALL ENTIRE PARISH HALL ENTIRE PARISH HALL Festival-ENTIRE SCHOOL AND GYM 7:00 AM AA Meeting- 7:00 AM AA Meeting- 7:00 AM AA MeetingParish Outreach Parish Outreach Parish Outreach 7:00 AM AA MeetingParish Outreach 2:00 PM BAPTISMS 7:00 PM AA Step 7:00 PM Prayer Group-Parish Outreach Group (Spanish) 6:15 PM Kids Ballroom Dance Class- LC RECTORY MEETING ROOM 7:00 PM Español Rosario-Church 7:00 PM Adult Ballroom - LC 7:30 PM Baptism Preparation ClassLower Church Alcove Family Feast and Festival-ENTIRE SCHOOL AND GYM 7:00 AM AA MeetingParish Outreach FRIDAY July 1st Family Feast and Festival-ENTIRE SCHOOL AND GYM 7:00 AM AA MeetingParish Outreach SATURDAY July 2nd Family Feast and Festival-ENTIRE SCHOOL AND GYM 7:00 AM AA MeetingParish Outreach 10:00 AM Divine Will Prayer Group- Rectory Meeting Room 7:30 PM Mom's Group- Rectory Meeting Room Eucharistic Ministers Catholic Charismatic Conference Eucharistic Ministers Needed for Hospital Duty on Thursdays after the 9AM Mass.
