Jesus was both by himself and with others. He was somehow experiencing the solitude of personal prayer, but was also close enough to his followers to engage in conversation with them. Although we don’t know exactly what the details were of this situation, it does suggest for us an example of what we might call spiritual “balance.” Here we see Jesus taking time to be alone in prayer, but also taking time to engage in spiritual reflection with the other members of his community. He didn’t sacrifice one for the other. He found a way to have both. We are called to do the same. Developing the habit of personal prayer is an essential part of our spiritual lives. Like Jesus, we too need to set aside time and space to pray by ourselves, connecting as individuals with our Father in heaven. Whether it be a few quiet moments in the morning, or time to pray at night, this kind of prayer keeps us connected to God. It enables us to give our own answer the poignant question Jesus poses today, “But who do you say that I am?” Personal prayer alone, however, is not enough to fulfill us spiritually. We are also meant to participate in the larger community of believers, joining together with others in communal prayer and reflection. This, of course, happens every time we attend Mass as we gather together at church and join in the liturgy. For some, “sacrificing” our Sunday mornings week after week may seem like too much to ask. But this is one way we can carry out the challenging command of Christ to take up our cross and follow Him. Olga Keefe Anna Ruisi John J. Catholic Charities' Talbot House serves the needs of families in crisis due to substance abuse. In 2008, Bill received a call from his son Michael who was away at medical school. Michael was in crisis — addicted to drugs and plummeting out-of-control. Searching for a safe environment to get Michael help, Bill found Talbot House. At first Michael didn't want to stay — but 22 days after he moved in — Michael was a different person. Catholic Ministries Appeal P.O. Box 4000 Rockville Centre, NY 115714000 "Talbot House gave our son back to us. It's a wonderful resource. Michael fully credited Talbot House and his counselor with his recovery. Michael went back to medical school with the intention of working in the area of addiction medicine." 516.379.5210 x2 Michael's life was cut short when, on the way to visit his grandmother, his car was hit head-on by an impaired driver. Inspired by his son's desire to help those with addiction, today Bill volunteers at Talbot House as a spiritual education counselor, helping residents address the topics and events that may be holding them back from recovery. "Michael said he owed his life to Talbot House. I know I belong here carrying on his work." -4- www.CathoIicMinistriesAppeal.org Sacrificial Giving 2016 2015 Did We Take a Step? June 12, 2016 June 14, 2015 Decrease $20,407.60 $22,641.19 ($ 2,233.59) “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asks Peter in today’s Gospel. Does my use of the gifts and talents entrusted to me accurately reflect my answer to that same question? How willing am I do to deny myself, take up my cross and follow in His steps? Mike Norton ~ Grand Knight (516) 356-7972 [email protected] -17- Dedication to St. Anthony’s Shrine Taking Jesus to the Streets: St. Anthony’s Eucharistic Procession On June 12th, the eve of the Feast of St. Anthony, 160-170 parishioners and visitors joined Father Joe as he processed with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament (inside a monstrance) on Church property and along Cheshire Place and 5th Avenue. After the noon Mass on this sunny, joyful day, the congregation proceeded out the Northeast side door to the outdoor statue of the Blessed Mother, where Father knelt and incensed the temporary altar. Cantor Christina Long beautifully led the singing of most of the hymns, while Marco Hernandez serenaded us with Adoremos Adoremos in Spanish. Denise Kancler led the rosary, which was prayed primarily while we walked. At the St. Anthony’s statue in front of Trinity Regional School, Father offered a blessing for students, teachers, parents and all who work in education. At our new St. Anthony shrine inside the Church, Father prayed a formal dedication. We continued into the main sanctuary singing Alleluia, Sing to Jesus, and ended with the traditional songs and prayers of benediction. Five altar servers did a fabulous job heading up the procession with a cross, candles and incense. The Knights of Columbus provided assistance to Father and the crowd in several capacities, and the Columbiettes graciously hosted a lovely reception. Thank you to everyone involved, especially Jean Drenick, who handled publicity. We hope you will join us next time our priests lead a procession! Please send comments and suggestions to [email protected]. Holy Hours and Nocturnal Adoration to Honor Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament You can experience exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament five times a month at St. Anthony’s: Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. – Holy Hour The first Friday evening and Saturday morning of each month with the Nocturnal Adoration Society. Judge Council Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual blood drive on Wednesday, July 13th at their council hall in Hewitt Square, East Northport. Our blood drive will run from 3:00pm – 8:30pm. Next week our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world. The Knights of Columbus will be taking appointments for their blood drive the weekend of July 2-3 after all masses. To sign-up, fill out an appointment slip and leave it in the box as you leave church. You will receive a confirmation of your appointment in the mail. Each summer blood reserves drop to dangerously low levels. This year is no different. Perhaps you have seen the emergency appeals for blood on television or heard the announcement on the radio. Please consider bringing a family member or a friend with you to the blood drive. The Knights of Columbus thank everyone who has donated in the past, no matter where you donated. Donating a pint of blood is truly giving the gift of life. -20- K of C Pasta Dinner PASTA DINNER for 2 great Charities “The Sunrise Fund” (Children with Cancer at Stony Brook Hospital) and Fr.
