Is it really Red? By: Dan Shaul, State Director The quick answer to that is when the Bluest of all blue states Massachusetts elects Scott Brown a republican to the United States Senate. I would like to share with you my thoughts, which might cast a different twist on this event from what most of you may have heard through the news. Many new outlets have suggested that the vote in Massachusetts was referendum on nationalized healthcare or that the outcome was the result of a poorly ran campaign of Martha Coakley. Personally I was pleased with the outcome of the election because the healthcare plan is most certainly going to be reevaluated and the increased cost to business owners will not occur without the open debate. I was delighted because the greatest governmental system in the world worked. The democratic form of government of the United States is based on a fair and balance representation of the people with three very separate branches of government with a system of checks and balances prohibiting excessive power by any of the three. I feel that the fair and balanced representation part is what worked so well not only on the 19th of January but also in the most recent election cycle. If we look back to the election of November 2008, we would see the vote of the people indicated they were tired of the same old thing and wanted change. The economy was too faltering so they voted for change and hoped things would move forward again. The people spoke with their votes and told congress they were not happy with the increase in the national debt and the status of the war on terror. For the first time since the LBJ era (1967-69) has the same party controlled the senate with a super majority, controlled the house of representative and control of the executive branch via President Obama. This triple crown of power gave the democrats a “Carte Blanche” to introduce and pass legislation with little or no constructive debate. It is my belief that the Democratic Party leaders misinterpreted the election results of 2008. They saw the vote as a mandate for their platform. Instead I believe the votes in November 2008 were a message that politics needed to change and that is what they voted for: a more fair and balanced way of doing things. The people wanted a sense of being heard and that their well being was being considered with each and every vote taking place in Washington DC. It is my hope that the vote that took place in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will be remembered as the “vote heard around congress”, that every member of the United States Congress, every state and local elected official recognize this historical event not as a Republican upsetting a Democrat but a clear message from the people standing up for a fair and balanced political system. As a system that recognizes the people first and considers the needs of all the people prior to casting any vote. I would like to invite the members of MGA to take part in this process and make sure the members of the Missouri General Assembly understand we the people need to be heard and will demand to be heard. MGA will be hosting the Missouri Grocers Day at the Capitol again this year on March 31, 2010. As in the past, this is a great opportunity to be heard by those who have taken an oath of office to represent us. In closing I would ask you take a few moments on February 15th to remember not only our Presidents but also those great leaders who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America. Without these documents we would not live in the greatest country on Earth. CPG coupon distribution increased by 11 percent from 2008 to 311 billion coupons distributed -- the largest single-year distribution quantity ever recorded. The vast majority of 2009 coupon distribution growth occurred as marketers chose to put paper coupons in the hands of consumers in a variety of different ways to stimulate product purchase decisions in this tough economy. Consumers responded by redeeming nearly 3.2 billion coupons, a 23 percent increase over the prior year. This growth represented the secondhighest increase ever recorded for year-over-year coupon redemption. As a result, consumers were able to save nearly $3.5 billion with coupons in 2009, an increase of $800 million, or nearly 30 percent more than the prior year. With consumers interest in coupons extremely high due to their personal economic situations and permanent habits being formed in frugal shopping behavior, both paper and digital coupons are expected to be important techniques marketers will use to reach and motivate consumers in 2010, and beyond. Dierbergs Food Donations to Operation Food Search Average three-quarters a ton per store, per week Sumbitted By: Todd E. Vasel, Dierbergs Markets Inc. Dierbergs Markets reported donations this year of nearly two million pounds of food to Operation Food Search, the largest distributor of free food to those in need in the bi-state region. Dierbergs donated 1,901,365 pounds of unsold or overstocked foods from 23 stores and its central kitchen and baking facility. That food becomes part of Operation Food Search’s (OFS) monthly distributions to a network of 250 community partner agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, orphanages and senior centers. Each month, more than 120,000 people in the St. Louis bi-state region, nearly half of whom are children, receive food assistance through this network. Dierbergs’ donations amount to approximately nine percent of OFS’s annual collection of more than 22 million pounds of food and household items each year. During its 2009 fiscal year ending Sept. 30, Operation Food Search received food donations from approximately 245 companies, restaurants and community organizations from a 10-state region. The food is then exclusively distributed in Missouri and Illinois. Each Dierbergs store, on average, donates more than 82,000 pounds of food annually to OFS. That equates to three quarters of a ton per store, per week every week of the year. On a per store basis, that’s more than any other food retailer supporting OFS. Dierbergs’ relationship with Operation Food Search dates to the organization’s earliest days. When OFS was incorporated as a non-profit agency in 1981, Dierbergs was the first supermarket to donate foods. “Dierbergs has a long history with our organization,” said Sunny Schaefer, executive director, Operation Food Search. “From the beginning, Dierbergs took a lead in food donations and, in doing so, provided the necessary leadership for the program to grow. This was at a time prior to ‘good Samaritan’ liability statutes that now protect companies making good faith food donations for distribution to those in need.” Dierbergs also hosts customer food drives throughout the year during peak times of need. One of those food drives is underway now. All Dierbergs stores are participating as Drop-off points for food donations to OFS throughout the holidays. Each store has pre-packaged grocery bags filled with basic food staples that can be purchased for under $5 or $10 and placed in the Operation Food Search bin in the store or dropped off at any local food pantry. Customers can also make donations at any checkout stand; coupons for $1, $5 and $10 benefit Operation Food Search and the fight against poverty and hunger. All of these customer donations are on top of Dierbergs annual contributions of more than 1.9 million pounds. “For hungry people in our area, these bags and donations at Dierbergs’ checkouts are a wonderful gift,” said Schaefer. “They offer hope to an empty cupboard.” February 9 The N.G.A.
