Grosse Pointe Foundation

Enhancing a Tradition of Excellence
Annual
Report
2009-10
Gifts Received in Honor of Individuals
Letter from the President
Dear Friends of the Grosse Pointe Public School System,
On behalf of the 8,400 students who have benefitted from your incredible
generosity, and the Grosse Pointe Foundation for Public Education’s (GPFPE) Board of Directors, Advisory Board and many devoted volunteers,
please accept our heartfelt thanks.
In this report you will read highlights of remarkable programs and projects
supported by the GPFPE. From providing support for innovative initiatives like Challenge Day and the F.A.S.T. reading program, to endowing an
ambitious new student volunteerism program, to dramatically accelerating the deployment of instructional classroom technology thanks to the
John A. and Marlene L. Boll Foundation, your generosity has impacted our
community’s children in important and measurable ways.
Established just over four years ago, the GPFPE has made solid progress
toward achieving its mission of making our schools among the best in the
nation. To date, the GPFPE has funded over $1 million in grants – large
and small – to support a wide range of projects and programs at every
school in the district. We believe that there is no more important investment or responsibility, than providing our children with an excellent,
well-rounded educational experience. Your support demonstrates that you
share that belief.
Please take a moment to review our accomplishments and celebrate the
many successes you have helped make possible. Again, we thank you and
hope that we will continue to earn your support as we work to enhance
the excellence that is the tradition of the Grosse Pointe Public School
System.

Sincerely,
Robert A. Bury
President

John A. and Marlene L. Boll Classroom
Technology Challenge
The GPFPE received a classroom technology challenge from the John A. and
Marlene L. Boll Foundation to raise $250,000. They matched our efforts two to
one and gifted the GPFPE with a grant of $500,000. The collective goal is to
bring the Grosse Pointe Public School System closer to the forefront in technology. Kristine Boll Mestdagh said her parents’ objective is to “build a new model
for schools nationwide, making our district a beacon of educational excellence.”
The GPFPE has achieved 132% of its goal, raising $330,000 to earn the match.
“The Boll family are the visionaries who inspired the GPFPE to join with the
district and community to bring these advancements to our students, dramatically
changing their learning experience,” stated Lisa Vreede, GPFPE vice president
and campaign leader. Through these gifts, SMART Boards, digital projectors,
document cameras, sound systems, and more have been installed in classrooms
district wide. Teachers have also been trained to use the software applications
and equipment to engage students in new and exciting ways. As knowledge and
experience grows, the possibilities are unlimited.

Gifts in Memory of Individuals
• SERVE Student Volunteer Program
$25,000
Established in memory of Mrs. Anne R. Hudson and her lifelong commitment to giving back, the Hudson family made a directed gift to SERVE
(Students Electing to Respond to Volunteerism through Education).
SERVE is a new district program that connects students with volunteer opportunities throughout the community and the world. SERVE teaches our
children to work for the greater good through giving back. The Anne R.
Hudson Fund gift supported software to track students’ volunteer hours
and will fund “Kids Against Hunger,” a district-wide program that benefits
those in need in metropolitan Detroit and around the world. In addition,
an endowment was established to sustain the program in perpetuity.

Benchmark Assessments for Full Option Science System (FOSS)
Kits for Fourth and Fifth Grades – These lab-based assessments
provide immediate feedback to students and allow teachers to identify
any gaps in understanding so they can re-teach material before advancing. Students who show mastery may be given more complex or extended
assignments, while those students who need to continue to work on the
benchmark may do so. ($1696)
Diverse Differentiated Materials for Literacy Initiatives – Books
were purchased to teach reading to
small groups of students at their ability level, and allow teachers to differentiate their instruction while they
raise student reading skills and instill
a love of reading. ($480) Funding was also provided to purchase
two books per Poupard student to
help maintain and enhance students’
interest in reading over the summer.
Students were able to select their
own books which promoted a greater desire to read. ($3040)
Cross Curricular, Art Connections for Elementary Schools – The
program provides materials to close the gap between the art room and the
classroom. It provides for the integration of art into teaching social studies, math, language arts, reading and science which is vital in reaching the
visual learner as well as reinforcing information to the non visual learner.
($2119)
Social Studies Bin Supplies for all Second Grade Classes – Replacement of necessary materials across the district through this grant
helps effectively teach all the social studies lessons. Through this sensory
teaching many different learning styles (auditory, visual and tactile) are
touched upon, and therefore many different student learning needs are
met. ($1532)
