LEFT - Brayden Hubbard enjoys the feel of sand under
his toes during 6th grade Outdoor School at Camp
Westwind. Each fall Mrs. Ostby and her 6th grade class
spend four days exploring the camp’s 508 acres of wild
coastal land where they study ecology, science, math and
conservation of natural resources. This was the third
annual trip to Camp Westwind in what has become the
most anticipated event of the sixth grade year.

FRONT COVER - Development team members Toni
Nanneman, Chris Lieder and Dawn Hemstreet pose
with this beautifully restored 1926 Model T owned
by Don and Joanne Blaine. Joanne is the President of
the Willamette Valley Model T Club. The couple were
pleased to loan their prized car to Blanchet’s annual
auction in October. The Model T was parked at the
school’s entrance and added authenticity and style to the
Roaring Twenties theme of the event!
Blanchet Catholic was
abundantly blessed with
yet another successful
school year in 2013-14.
The trend continues
with a very positive
start to the current
school year, Blanchet’s
20th! In this edition of
our annual report, we
are pleased to proudly
highlight many student and school achievements of
the past year.
Blanchet’s 20th year will likewise be significant in
our history. This current year will see us engaged
in two very important processes: the formulation
of our next 5 year strategic plan and our periodic
accreditation review. We will be working hard to
ensure that these efforts produce initiatives that will
advance our mission in service of our students.

Stewardship, defined as responsibly managing
resources, especially those entrusted to us by others,
has been a core value at Blanchet Catholic since day
one. Please be assured that we are pledged to uphold
and exercise that value at all times. We recognize
that the foundation for our success continues to be
our shared faith, the commitment to advancing our
mission, and the support of our parents, benefactors
and community partners. On behalf of our
students, staff and faculty, thank you for believing in
Blanchet.
By Courage and Faith,
Anthony Guevara, President
Blanchet Catholic School is
proud to announce that senior
David Jablonski has been
named a Commended Student
in the 2015 National Merit
Scholarship Program!
David excels in every subject
and was named Blanchet’s
Science Student of the Year for
2014. He is a talented musician
and has been a valuable member of concert band and
guitar ensemble. Former English teacher Eileen Virden
commented, “David was my student in AP English
last year. He is one of the finest students I have worked
with. Always friendly, extremely inquisitive and bright.
He is respectful and open to many opinions, but he
always views class content through the lens of Catholic
Christian ethics.”
David is the 29th Blanchet student to be honored by
the prestigious National Merit organization.
On October 20
and 21, sixteen
French students
from Avignon,
France and
three of their
teachers visited
Blanchet.
Sister Daniela
Weddle, who is
Ms. Madison’s
niece, arranged with the Salem-Keizer Vicariate for the
group’s two week stay in Oregon, which they called a
“journey” because it was both a cultural and religious
adventure. The Sisters held class discussions, and the
French high school students experienced an American
school day by attending classes with several Blanchet
students.

Welcome
Mrs. McConn, Mr. Mor
Mrs. McConn ~ English, AP English,
Marketing, DECA Advisor
Mrs. McConn is originally from Lynnwood,
Washington. She and her younger brother grew up
traveling, camping, and eating very good Greek
food. Mrs. McConn and her husband Josh were
recently married and now reside in Portland.
Mrs. McConn attended Archbishop Murphy High
School in Washington, then moved to Portland
to attend the University of Portland.
After graduating with a Bachelor of
Science degree in secondary education
and English, she joined the University
of Portland’s Pacific Alliance for
Catholic Education volunteer graduate
teaching program. For two years, she
worked at Sacramento’s Holy Cross
Academy as a teacher-volunteer. Every
summer, she and the other teachers
in the program traveled back to the
University of Portland to work on
their Masters degrees. Mrs. McConn
graduated with a Masters in Education
with a reading endorsement this past
August, just one week prior to her
4
wedding. This year marks her third
year of teaching.
“I decided to become a teacher
because of the influence my high
school English teachers had on
my growth and learning. I always
eagerly looked forward to going to
English class and wanted to inspire
the same type of excitement for
the subject,” says Mrs. McConn.
“My hope for my students is that
through reading and writing, they
are better able to understand the
world around them. I want them to
be able to communicate effectively
in writing, as well as speaking,” she
adds.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. McConn’s hobbies
include reading, drinking coffee and exploring
Portland and the rest of Oregon.
Mr. Mordhorst ~ Biology, AP Biology,
Physics, Honors Chemistry, Mid High Math
Mr. Mordhorst was born in Nebraska, but has lived
up and down the I-5 corridor for most of his life.
Currently, he and his wife Jessica live in Portland
with their two year-old-daughter Vivienne Wilde.
rdhorst & Mr. Rubrecht
Mr. Mordhorst graduated from Phoenix High
School just south of Medford in 1996. He went on
to complete a degree in Biology with an emphasis
in Exercise and Movement Science at the University
of Oregon in 2000. Following graduation, Mr.
Mordhorst worked as a personal trainer. “I decided
to become a teacher, because while working with
adults in personal training, what I enjoyed most
was teaching them about their body, how it worked
and how they could prevent injury and take better
care of themselves,” he comments. Mr. Mordhorst
completed his Masters degree in education at
Portland State University and went on to teach
math and science courses at Beacon Academy and
International School in the Philippines and at Regis
Catholic High School in Stayton.
“There is no task too big or too small that you
cannot learn how to solve. Becoming a lifelong
learner is what I encourage in all of my students
and a philosophy that I stand by,” Mr. Mordhorst
says.
Mr. Mordhorst is currently attending graduate
school seeking his Initial Administrator License.
His hobbies include exercise and music - especially
playing guitar and singing to his daughter.
Mr. Rubrecht ~ College Counseling, Tennis
going to listen to the guy who was taking them to
the principal’s office,” he comments. He wanted
to be in a profession where he could reach out and
help students achieve their goals. School counseling
seemed the perfect fit, so he went on to Lewis and
Clark College to complete a Masters degree in
School Counseling.
Prior to coming to Blanchet, Mr. Rubrecht held
positions and internships at Tigard, Wilsonville
and Newberg high schools as well as at Charles F.
Tigard Elementary and Five Oaks Middle School in
Beaverton.
“I really like the college and career aspect of
school counseling where I have the opportunity to
help students figure out where they want to go and
help them achieve it. I believe every student can be
successful and has the ability to learn, sometimes
they just might need a push. Success is different
for each of us, and we need to value what that
individual believes. If you have a dream, there is a
way to get there,” says Mr. Rubrecht.
Outside of school, Mr. Rubrecht enjoys spending
time with his family, being outdoors and coaching
and playing tennis. He has been playing tennis for
about ten years and enjoys helping others learn to
play as well.
Coach
Matthew Rubrecht grew up in Roseburg
Oregon, the youngest of eight children.
He met his wife during college at Western
Oregon University and the couple has a
two-month-old baby boy.
In 2003 Mr. Rubrecht completed a
Bachelor of Science degree in Education/
Sports Science from Western Oregon
University following which he worked
as a Recreation Specialist at the Oregon
State Penitentiary and in campus security
at Newberg High School. After spending
four years in campus security, Mr.
Rubrecht felt he wasn’t able to reach the
students as he wanted. “They weren’t

Cryst

Mary Hollinger
Since opening its doors, Mary
Hollinger has filled just about every
possible background role in support
of Blanchet Catholic School: from
registering students and setting up a
business system of bookkeeping, to
spearheading the tuition assistance
program. She served as the key
administrative staff under the initial
leadership of Principal Guido
Caldarazzo and, over the years,
has continued to lead the financial
administration of the school as its
Business Manager.
During an October 21 all-school assembly, Mary
Hollinger was honored as Blanchet’s 2014 Crystal
Apple nominee. She was presented with a plaque
by Krina Lee of the Salem-Keizer Education
Foundation and former Blanchet President
Chuck Lee. The Crystal Apple Awards recognize
excellence in education by honoring those making
a significant impact in the lives of children. The
list of past nominees includes teachers, counselors,
instructional assistants, office managers and
administrators - all the professionals who help make
a difference in our students’ lives.
Even before Blanchet Catholic School opened
its doors in 1995, Mary Hollinger was playing
a key role in its success. She was one of the
leaders among the volunteers who carried out
the background studies to develop the necessary
information for establishing a school and for
incorporating in 1995 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. It was
natural then, that she would become the school’s
very first hired employee.
6
6
Beyond the demands of her
position, Mary volunteers her time
to substitute when a teacher is ill
or has a personal emergency, she
helps with special events and fund
raising projects, participates in pep
assemblies and assists daily with
school lunches – a task that helps
her stay connected with Blanchet students.
There were many individuals who wrote in support
of Mary Hollinger for this award, but one summed
it up perfectly by saying, “Mary Hollinger has given
nearly twenty years of consistent valuable service
to her school. Decisions, large and small, are not
reached without her participation. Students are
not enrolled and maintained without her support.
Families benefit from her help in all sorts of
problem solving. Faculty and staff benefit from her
advice about curriculum matters, insurance benefits,
federal regulations and 403(b)’s. She never stops
giving from her multiple gift set and is the heart and
soul of a very solid and successful private middle
and high school. She deserves the Crystal Apple
Award for giving us Blanchet Catholic School, a
marvelous enrichment to our community.”

Carson Sweeney
Nominated by Mrs. Ostby, mid-high
student Carson Sweeney represented
Blanchet Catholic School as a
Leadership Ambassador at the People
to People International Program
World Leadership Forum held this
June in Washington, D.C. During
the six-day conference, attendees
interacted with members of a
Congressional panel on Capitol Hill,
met with White House correspondents
and visited the Supreme Court to
learn more about the branches of
government. Evening leadership
meetings were held to share insights
and reflections of the day’s events and
experiences.
To better understand the Civil
and the World Wars, field trips
and discussions were held at the
Lincoln Memorial, the battlefield of
Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, along
with the memorials for WWII, Martin Luther King,
Jr., Thomas Jefferson, and the Vietnam veterans,
to name a few. At the new U.S. Institute of Peace,
delegates were invited to take part in an exclusive
international conflict resolution program in the
Global Peacebuilding Center.
Highlights of Carson’s trip included: visiting with
the Saudi Arabian diplomats during an “amazing
embassy dinner;” private pre-opening tours of the
Smithsonian National Museums of American
History, Air and Space and Natural History;
honoring a group of visiting veterans at Arlington
National Cemetery; learning intriguing facts at
the International Spy Museum; visiting the home
of this program’s International founder, President
Dwight D. Eisenhower; and the closing Potomac
River farewell cruise.
“It was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed
interacting with new friends from all over the
country, especially my roommates. I would
recommend this program to anyone wanting
to be involved in national or international
leadership,” Carson says.
Note: The People to People International Program was
created to inspire students to strive for world peace and
understanding through hands-on global travel and
virtual classroom encounters that foster independence
and critical thinking about cultural interactions and
global citizenship. http://www.peopletopeople.com

Auct

A Roaring Twenties G
Thank you to all who attended, volunteered and
supported our annual auction, “A Roaring Twenties
Gala - Celebrating Blanchet Catholic School’s 20th
Year!” The evening was a tremendous success with
over 300 guests in attendance. We are truly blessed
to have the support of so many wonderful and
loyal families and friends, without whom Blanchet
Catholic School could not exist.
We are proud to acknowledge our auction table
sponsors this year - Hope Orthopedics (Sewell and
Coen families), RootX (Raffensperger family),
Seaman and Pollard families, Al’s Garden Center
& Greenhouses (Reuf family), Cascade Warehouse
(Cantonwine family), Condemnationjustice.com,
Mark & Laura Chong;VIDA Integrative Medicine
(Dacker family), Hillwood Properties (Lowell
& Maureen Smith) and Salem Catholic Schools
Foundation. Additionally we would like to thank
those who donated to the underwriting efforts to
help offset auction expenses. These donors include
Salem Radiology Consultants, Travis Fromwiller,
M.D., Dr. and Mrs. Kennedy and Mark and Laura
Chong.
10
Our caterer, The Sassy Onion, provided a delicious
meal served by our students, and auctioneer
Steven Talbot, along with Master of Ceremonies
Tom Hewitt, created a fun and engaging evening.
Blanchet students Anthony and Carolyn Beyer and
Laura Scriminti, along with pianist Robert Ashens,
provided the evening’s entertainment. The silent
auction was held in the Lee Student Center. Thanks
to the generosity of Blanchet donors and sponsors,
we were able to offer many wonderful items on
which to bid including a Blackglama mink coat,
a week at the Grande Luxxe in Mexico, a Canon
EOS Rebel T5i camera, five days in Vienna, Austria
and much, much more!
President Guevara and the Board of Directors
determined that Blanchet’s greatest need is to fund
tuition assistance and dedicated this year’s auction
appeal, “Embrace the Potential,” to this effort.
Funds donated to this appeal will help Blanchet
students achieve their potential as educated, faithfilled and service oriented individuals. With help
from a very generous benefactor who offered to
match funds if we were able to raise $50,000, the
Gala!
unique fundraising challenge called “Embrace the
Potential” was started. This anonymous donor
also pledged an additional $50,000 for the next
four years if we met the initial $50,000 challenge
by October 31, 2014. Not only did the Blanchet
community meet this challenge, but exceeded it
with a total of $68,000 raised!
In a video played during the auction, Class of 2012
graduate Dan Smith spoke from his heart about the
impact that Blanchet Catholic School had on his
life. Now a junior at the University of Notre Dame,
Dan acknowledges the tremendous gift Blanchet
and its generous donors have given him: “... for
my education and for giving me a chance to use
my gifts and talents to their fullest. I would not be
standing here at Notre Dame if it wasn’t for you,”
he says.
Many guests dressed
in styles of the 1920’s,
which added to the
enjoyment and festivity
of the evening.
If you missed this video on auction night, please
take a moment to view it on our website at
www.blanchetcatholicschool.com.
In all, this year’s auction raised over $147,000
for Blanchet students and programs, exceeding
our goal of $120,000! We continue to receive
donations from family and friends, local
Catholic parishioners, Serra and Sacred Heart
alumni and so many others who believe in
Catholic education.
The annual auction would not be possible
without the hard work and dedication of
our outstanding volunteers. Ten committee
members oversee the entire auction and
manage the efforts of 98 parent and 141 student
volunteers. Together these individuals donated
over 820 hours of service to make the auction a
success. The auction continues to be an important
Blanchet tradition that brings together families,
friends, students, alumni, teachers and many others
in support of Salem’s only Catholic secondary
school.

2013-14 Development Report
Major School Fundraisers
Blanchet has key fundraisers during each school
year to help us ensure that Blanchet remains
accessible for all Mid Valley families. We are very
purposeful to limit other fundraising in the school
so that families and donors are not overburdened
with requests for donations.
Blanchet asks parents to participate in three
annual fundraisers that include our annual
auction, student fundraiser and annual appeal.
These activities are important to support the
school’s operating budget and student activities
and help bridge the gap between the amount of
tuition charged and the actual cost of a Blanchet
education.

The results of our 2013-14 fundraising efforts

and benefactors. We are grateful for each and
every one who helps to support Blanchet Catholic
School through donations of time, money and
services.
Welcome New Board Members
Blanchet Catholic School welcomes four new
members to its Board of Directors. Dr. John
Coen and Jennifer Paul joined the Board last
April, and Krishna Namburi and Bob Hill joined
this summer. Each of these individuals lends a
unique skill set, life and professional experience
as well as a sincere commitment to the continued
improvement and advancement of the Blanchet
Catholic School mission.
Dr. John Coen is an orthopedic surgeon with
Salem’s Hope Orthopedics. He and his wife
Cathy are Blanchet parents of five – two current
14
students and three alums. Dr. Coen has
made incredible contributions to the
school’s athletic program by volunteering
as the school’s team doctor. He has
coordinated concussion safety programs,
offered free physical exams for Blanchet
athletes and created the school’s first oncampus athletic training facility. Dr. Coen
is serving on the Board’s Programs and Services
Committee.
Jennifer Paul is an associate of the Saalfeld Griggs
Business Litigation Group. Her practice focuses on
representing clients in a variety of business disputes
including litigation of claims against shareholders
and directors; litigation of stock valuation disputes;
breach of contract claims; and enforcement of
non-competition agreements. Jennifer serves on the
board’s Catholic Identity and Policy committees.
Krishna Namburi is the IT Director/CIO for
the City of Salem. She and husband Raghu are
Blanchet parents of two. Krishna was honored
last year as a Volunteer of the Year for her
significant contributions to the school’s technology
infrastructure. Krishna helped to define the strategy
for how we would implement the technology
objectives for the 5 Year Plan. She accompanied
staff to St. Mary’s to look at best practices for iPad
rollout and serves as a consultant for developing
our overall technology strategy. Krishna serves on
the Board’s Technology Committee.
Bob Hill retired in 2012 from LCG Pence
Construction where he held several prominent
positions over his twenty-year tenure including
vice president of finance, chief financial officer,
vice president of development services and chief
executive officer. He and his wife Marypat have two
sons, one a current seventh grader and the other
a graduate of Blanchet’s Class of 2012. Bob Hill
serves on the Board’s Facilities Committee.
We would also like to acknowledge the immense
contributions of two retiring board members Garth Brandaw and Donna Garaventa. Garth
Brandaw served as a member of the board from
March 2010 to June 2014. He is principal and
founder of CB|Two Architects and has been an
outstanding advocate for the school. He and his
team at CB|Two were honored as Blanchet’s 2014
Community Partner of the Year and continue
to play a significant role in the growth and
improvement of Blanchet’s physical plant.
Donna Garaventa served an amazing 17 years on
Blanchet’s Board of Directors - from July 1998 to
June 2014. She and husband Jim have six children,
all of whom are Blanchet graduates.
Donna Garaventa was an administrative law judge
with the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Board
for more than 24 years. She continues to serve
as a private mediator with Northwest Conflict
Solutions.
Although the two will no longer hold regular board
positions, they both maintain important ties to the
school’s governing body. Garth will now serve as
a member of the Property Foundation and Donna
has joined Blanchet’s President’s Advisory Council.
We are grateful to both Donna and Garth for their
contributions as board members and honored to
have them continue to play an important role in the
success of Blanchet Catholic.
