St. Francis Episcopal Day School is a parish day school of St. Francis Episcopal Church. The St. Francis program (toddler through eighth grade)
embodies educational challenges while remaining grounded in faith, passionate about the arts, and firmly committed to nurturing children.

and in the allocation of our resources.

ommunication, in all its forms, is an important
focus this year as we strive to share information with
our school community in open, timely, and honest
communiqués. This is in direct response to comments
from our faculty and families. Please do not hesitate
to let us know how we are progressing on better
meeting your needs.

Thanks to the recent Challenge 20/20 competition
sponsored by the National Association of Independent
Schools (NAIS), students at St. Francis Episcopal Day
School are now recognized as competitors on a national
stage. I traveled to London this summer with three
student representatives and Debbie Harris, Science
Department Chair, to receive our award from NAIS.
Our students were the only middle school aged
children recognized, and they proudly held their
own in seminars geared toward high school students.
St. Francis students also stand out by learning Mandarin
Chinese in addition to Spanish. Chinese teacher Minnie
Chen provides a space for students to learn not only
the language but the customs of China. She expands
our knowledge base and helps prepare our students to
live in a global community.
Each August we also identify goals to focus our work
during the school year. We are targeting two major
areas in 2007-2008.

We begin each school year by announcing a theme,
and for school year 2007-2008 the theme is “joy.”
I recently heard commentary on how our society
has confused the meanings of the words “pleasure”
and “joy.” Pleasure comes from external sources—
delicious food, a shopping spree, a great golf game,
an evening at the movies. While these things make
us happy, they are fleeting. Joy is an internal state.
It comes from being at peace and knowing who you
are as a person. It is an outlook on life that no one
can take away. In a crazy world of over marketing and
“must haves,” I want our students to begin to identify
those things that bring them true joy. It will be a gift
they will carry with them long past graduation. This
year, St. Francis will give expression to the joy found
within our institution.

The 2007-2008 School Board
St. Francis is governed by a board of trustees, carefully
hand-picked to provide the perfect mix of church
members and school parents, with real-world skills.
Led by Father Stuart Bates, the Acting Rector of
St. Francis Church, the board meets monthly during
the school year. It is comprised of a number of
committees that do the real work of the school.
The committees also meet monthly, and report back
to the board. The school is then able to do things
that the board has approved, but not before then!
We have a very well-defined chain of command.

Susan B. Lair, Ph.D., is the head of St. Francis Episcopal Day
School. Before being named to this position she served as
head of upper school at St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio. Her
background also includes working at Fort Worth Country Day
School, and in both Fort Worth Independent School District and
Bryan Independent School District. She earned her doctorate in
education administration from the University of Texas at Austin.
She also holds a master’s degree in mathematics education
from Texas Christian University and a bachelor’s degree in
mathematics and physical education from the University of
North Texas. Dr. Lair is married to her high school sweetheart,
and together they have three children and three grandchildren.

For 55 years, St. Francis has been a nurturing place for
its students and their families. Each individual is valued
for his or her own special gifts. St. Francis Episcopal
Church is part of the fabric of our day-to-day lives.
The four cornerstones – faith, scholarship, courage

Sense of Community

Children need to feel safe to concentrate on the
business of learning. The National Center for Education
Statistics polled teachers on their perceptions of serious
problems in their schools. The results were published
in its Digest of Educational Statistics and showed that
teachers felt students in private schools were more than
twice as likely to abstain from using alcohol and three
times as likely to abstain from abusing drugs as were
children in public schools. Students themselves reported

and is married with two daughters – Laura ’06 and Abby ’09.

St. Francis Episcopal Day School is part of my family’s
life, and I am glad it is part of your family’s life as well.
We will work together this year to support and sustain
our children in their youthful pursuits of knowledge
and growth.

Many studies have shown that independent
schools prepare their students to lead lives of
achievement and satisfaction. The National Assessment
of Educational Progress (NAEP) administers one
such study, and has this to say about the results:
“Students who had attended private school in 8th
grade were twice as likely as those who had attended
public school to have completed a bachelor’s or higher
degree by their mid-20s (52 versus 26 percent).”

Private schools have deep roots in our nation’s history,
and our very first leaders emerged from a background
of independent education. These men and women
valued their education so much that they created the
prototype of today’s educational system. Religious
freedom was one of the basic tenets of that early system,
and Episcopal schools carry on that faith-based tradition,
advocating character education as well as diversity.
The Episcopal faith accepts people from all backgrounds,
fostering a magnificent opportunity for spiritual growth.
Episcopal schools invite those who attend and work
in them to seek lives full of genuine meaning, purpose
and service to the world in which we live.

last year, donated carloads of food staples to the
Fairhaven Food Pantry.

John “Jack” Chandler is chairman of the ad hoc facilities committee at St. Francis Episcopal Day
School. He graduated from the University of Texas with a BBA in marketing. After working for
Exxon for a number of years, he established Petroleum Equipment Int’l. in 1981. He is married
to Bonnie and together they have three married children and two grandchildren. He and
Bonnie have been members of St. Francis Episcopal Church for 31 years. Both have served as
senior warden.

•Turkey Bucks provided $3,000 towards the purchase
of turkeys to our Hispanic sister church in Bellaire.

This vision of “one community” is just absolutely
wonderful. We are making such progress towards talking
together, planning together, and working together. This is
how really successful families develop. It is amazing what
has been going on within the joint facilities committee.
School board members and church vestry members are in
agreement on every major point. Based on my 30 years
of experience around here, this unanimity is just short of
miraculous. Something
really good is going on at
Piney Point Road. Exciting
times are ahead!
•The admissions committee accepted 138 new
students for the 2007-2008 school year. Applications
were up by 12 percent from the 2006-2007
admissions season.

Our plans include finding ways to share facilities
and share expenses, as one community. Even in the
friendliest of families, there are certain things that are
sacred and cannot be shared, and some areas where
sharing our facilities makes the most sense. The school
Dining Hall and kitchen area are examples of an area
that probably should not be shared. Other areas –
meetings rooms, club rooms, and foyers – can and
should be shared. We are learning how to best utilize
every square inch of our property here in Piney Point.

•St. Francis fields 37 athletic teams in 13 different
sports, and competes in almost 500 games and
tournaments each school year. We host up to 40
percent of these athletic contests on our campus. Over 80 percent of our students in grades 6-8
participate in athletics.

last year.

Facilities are the future! And planning for the future is
just what the ad hoc joint facilities committee is setting
out to do. Over the next few months, members of the
school board and members of the church vestry are
joining together to take a long look at what we think
will be our community’s requirements on Piney Point
into the foreseeable future.

Investing for the future

Since we are an educational institution, we take a
conservative approach. Our intention is to be around
for a long time! Diversification is a major part of our
investment strategy. This helps ameliorate our exposure
to significant swings in the market. We aim for appropriate
growth at a reasonable rate, and the assurance that
funds will be available for the plans we have.

We look to specialists to help us manage our funds.
The investment committee currently hires two different
consulting groups to administer our assets. They, in
turn, engage a variety of investment managers to make
wise choices. Stable growth over the long term is what
we seek. We need our investments to provide a reliable
income that we can draw upon in a reasonable fashion.

Investing is a sophisticated process, or to do it well
it ought to be. It is the responsibility of the Board of
Trustees to ensure that the $15 million of investment
funds the school owns are invested well. The board,
in turn, appoints an investment committee to take
on that responsibility.

why development?

The development committee is charged with seeking
current and future fund raising opportunities to help
bridge the gap between income and the actual cost
of operating the school. If tuition was increased to
cover the actual cost of all programs, many families
could not afford to send their children to St. Francis.
Because the board of trustees is committed to
keeping tuition at a competitive level, increasing
income through charitable gifts is a powerful way
to accomplish this task.

Kim Strange is chairman

experience, including
being past president of
the Junior League of
Houston. Her company,
KMS Management,
provides administrative
services and event planning
for professional trade
associations. Kim graduated
with a BBA in marketing
from the University of Texas at Austin. She is married and has
two children, both St. Francis alums.
A special thank you goes out to all who participated
in the Capital Campaign feasibility study this past
spring. Soon the board will make decisions about the
priorities, financial goals, and timeline of the campaign
based on the final report. I cannot emphasize enough
how vital your comments are to the direction of this
campaign. This truly is an historic moment for the school
and a chance for all of us to make a lasting impact.

Based on the strength of the Annual Fund, we are now
ready to start a formal major gifts program. The school
has already benefited from many generous major gifts
such as foundation funding for the library renovation
and a private donation of the inspiring St. Francis statue
that sits in our courtyard. Other defined areas of need
that we will be seeking support for in the 2007-2008
school year are: financial aid, The Sarah W. Woolrich
Fund for Faculty, and the Wings Program.

As the school turns 55, it is thrilling to say that the
St. Francis development program is growing as well. If
you have a specific area of interest or questions about
how the school utilizes these funds, I encourage you
to contact or drop by development office. They always
welcome visitors.

Ten years ago, the Annual Fund raised $359,812.
This was over a $100,000 jump from the previous year’s
total. The community celebrated wildly! Thanks to your
generosity, this incredible momentum has continued,
and I am proud to announce that this year’s Annual Fund
goal is $700,000—a number I am confident we will reach.

Discipline is one of the school goals for this year, and it
dovetails nicely into our ideas about “one community.”
It is important to both the church and the school that
we find ways to share expenses and facilities. As couples
have long posited, “two can live as cheaply as one.”
While that is not entirely true, it does bring us closer
together in the spirit of cooperation as we work on
projects together and share common aspirations. We
are a very good school, and greatness is just around the
corner. Becoming one community can only strengthen
us. I believe it is through discipline that we will be able
to go from good to great.

We are constantly working to find ways to stabilize
tuition. One way we are doing this is by adopting a
Five-Year Strategic Financial Plan. Our board, along
with Dr. Lair, our Head of School, and Vance Ulsh, Head
of Business and Operations, worked tirelessly to come
up with a joint vision for what our community would
like to have, what we want to do, and what we think
we can afford. Now we must have the discipline to
carry the plan forward.

Patricia “Patti” Turner is
the chairman of the finance

is also owner/operator of
Truluck’s Restaurant Group.
Prior to that, she practiced
as an attorney with several
local law firms. She received
a juris doctorate from South
Texas College of Law and a
bachelor’s degree in political
science from State University
of New York College at
Buffalo. Patti is married with three children. Her twins are
seventh-graders at St. Francis, and her stepson is a U.S. Marine.
She has been a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church
since 1997.

A big part of running the school – or running anything!
– is always balancing the budget. Those twin columns
of revenues and expenses are constantly throwing
up roadblocks for the wonderful dreams we have
for our school, and it is part of my job as chairman
of the finance committee to find ways to make it all
fit together.

The doors to my office and to St. Francis Episcopal

In Episcopal schools, there is plenty of light to go
around! Faculty members share their knowledge and
dedication daily with their students. The love of God is
shared in school chapels. Even school crises can provide
opportunities for our students to let their lights shine
through serving the larger community. God asks each of
us to let our light shine. We know that this is not merely
a request or a suggestion, but is a central part of being
a person of faith.

Episcopal schools have always played a huge part in
the life of our community and this parish. St. Francis
Episcopal Church was founded in 1950, and in 1952
the congregation decided to better serve the needs of
the community by starting a day school. That is how
St. Francis came to be one of more than 900 parishes
and cathedrals in the Episcopal community who have a
school as part of their ministry. As the Acting Rector of
St. Francis Episcopal Church and also a school parent,
I love that the church and the school are inextricably
linked. Education feeds the souls and spirits of our
children, and the church provides an anchor.
