Dear Friends and Supporters of St. Andrew’s,
Boomers have been called impatient, demanding, questioning of authority and
demanding more choices in life — all things that will serve us well as caregivers. - Larry Minnix, CEO LeadingAge
We are all caregivers. Each of us plays a vital role in the future of aging in America. This is
important because aging in our society is changing. We are realizing that to maintain our
cherished independence as we age, we have to become interdependent on each other.
Thanks to a network of family caregivers, professional caregivers, and other vital forwardthinking services for seniors, we are building communities and neighborhoods that are more
“aging-in-place” friendly.
St. Andrew’s has always committed to helping seniors live independently. Aging in place not
only helps maintain independence, but it also much less costly. Through our programs,
communities and services, St. Andrew’s continues to incorporate our mission of empowering
seniors and their caregivers through choices and options that foster a vital life.
The following pages contain a glimpse of the extraordinary work that St. Andrew’s has
accomplished in 2013. Many people don’t realize that over 60% of the population we serve
have very limited financial resources. We hope you will take a moment to read about some of
the seniors’ lives that have been greatly impacted by our programs. Many of these life-changing
programs are only made possible by the generosity of our dear friends.
Ageless Remarkable Saint Louisans
We are proud to share with you the names of our generous supporters and how their support
has impacted the lives of area seniors and other 2013 highlights. Thank You! We hope you will
join us in 2014 and support the mission of St. Andrew’s!
“Every day is the best day.”

What is St. Andrew’s?
Growing older carries a unique set of challenges, for the senior, the family and other potential caregivers.
When crises occur, most of us aren’t prepared to act. We haven’t pre-planned. We don’t know where to
find the resources we need. We often don’t even know what questions to ask.
Missouri’s population age
That’s where we come in. For the past 50 years, St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors System, a not-for-profit
organization, has been the place where seniors, their families and caregivers find answers. Whether it’s
occasional help that allows a senior to remain independent at home, a comfortable retirement residence that
feels like home, or an assisted living or skilled nursing facility, St. Andrew’s can provide whatever you need.
Thanks to donations to our Charitable Foundation, we are able to assist seniors at all income levels. We help
them find and access the support they need and, most important, we help them Worry Less.

issues of aging, securing services, and in navigating the maze of services and programs.
The Caring Workplace: This “corporate eldercare program,” provided by Senior Solutions, helps to
make senior- and caregiver-related services available through the caregiver’s workplace. Senior Solutions
helps more than 4,000 local employees who participate in the program balance work and care for older
loved ones.

St. Andrew’s Charitable Foundation
In a world where seniors are living longer and health care costs are constantly on the rise, millions
of seniors have discovered that their savings just are not enough to cover even their most basic needs.
As the cost of aging goes up, so too, does the need for charitable care and financial assistance.
Over
27%
of seniors throughout
all of older adults living
in poverty were at
risk of hunger in 2011.
The St. Andrew’s Charitable Foundation supports older adults who have outlived their resources.
Last year, our foundation provided more than $1.1 million to help bridge the gap between what
seniors and their families can afford and what seniors need to live healthy, secure and fulfilled lives.

Meet Etta
Etta is just one of the extraordinary seniors whose lives are touched by the generosity of our friends.
You would never guess that Etta is a centenarian. Etta readily admits she was a “little devil” when she
was younger. It’s easy to see that personality trait in her, even at age 103. “When I was growing up in
the south, they called me a fast little heifer,” Etta says. “I had a strict upbringing; we couldn’t drink,
dance, or even wear pants to church. Still, I did it.” She became a preacher’s wife and remained
married for 50 years. With a love for life, she focused her energy on helping others, which she credits
with keeping her going. “I’m not tired yet,” she claims. “As long as I’m loving the good Lord,
sharing and trying to help someone along the way, I’m just as happy as I can be. I’ve had a beautiful,
wonderful life.” Even at 103, Etta is filled with energy and a zest for life that is truly inspirational, but
simple things like taking a bath or getting dressed are extremely challenging for her. Etta relies on her
caregiver, Tracey, to help her bathe, manage her medications, get dressed, and help with minor cleaning and food preparation. Her care is made possible through our low-income charitable care program.
If it weren’t for your donations, Etta might have to stop going to her beloved church on Sundays
because she couldn’t get dressed. She would either struggle to remain in her current home at a much
greater safety and health risk or, more likely, she would have to move in to a nursing home that would
cost 7 times more. Your generosity enables her to live safely, independently, and happily in the home
she loves. Thank you!
There are millions more seniors just like Etta; seniors who thought their future was secure. Yet, due
to unexpected illness, hardships, or simply living beyond the age they had anticipated, they find they
need extra help in meeting the challenges of daily living. Fortunately, St. Andrew’s Resources for
Seniors System is here to help.
Senior Solutions provided in-home

Through our Charitable Foundation, we provide seniors with services that enable them
to remain in their homes. We arrange for minor home repairs to correct problems that may
threaten their safety. We provide transportation to help them get to the grocery store. We help those
that are already in our care, continue to stay in the safe and healthy environment that they had
envisioned for their golden years.

Community Events
Golf Outing
Despite our efforts to beat the heat by moving our golf outing to September, our friends still came out
and played through 100+ degree weather at the St. Andrew’s Loving Hope Golf Outing in 2013. There
is no question- it was HOT, but we had a blast! The day was filled with a good game, lots of laughter
and plenty of water. We were so excited that in only our second year of this
event, both flights were full and our silent auction sold out! Thanks to
everyone who came and enjoyed golf, lunch and the auction, we were able
to raise over $30,000 for the Financial Assistance Program at Brooking Park.
The committee, led by Tim McFarlin and Donna Murray, worked hard to
make this event a success, and we are all looking forward to the next outing
on Monday, August 4th, 2014.
Casino Night
This year Tower Grove Manor kicked off their First Annual Casino Royale event! This event
was designed to raise funds for the Financial Assistance Program at Tower Grove Manor,
and we are so happy to announce that, with the help of HealthLink and the
residents of TGM, we were able to meet and exceed our fundraising goal! Many
of the residents came downstairs on the evening of July 12th to play Black Jack,
Poker and Roulette, or just to enjoy our lounge singer and the great food. Tower
Grove Manor’s very own Charlie Odorizzi (our James Bond) went to “jail” until
the residents generously raised $500 to bail him out! All who
came had a fantastic time, and everyone walked away with a
health-related prize, supplied by HealthLink. We plan to
repeat this fun evening on July 18th, 2014.

Meet Florence
Thanks to your support, Florence can feel safe in her home again.
Florence is 73. Her life has been blessed but she has also had her share of hardship. She married
pretty young and had three wonderful children. Her husband left when the children were young
and she was left toprovide for them as a single mother. She worked as a nurse and got by well until
suffering from a nervous breakdown and losing her job. Still unwell, she was unable to find employment. With no income she could not provide for herself, much less her children. Knowing she was
in a desperate situation, she asked her sister to take in her children. Not long after, Florence found
herself homeless. For 4 years, she lived on the streets trying to get better and trying to get by. With
the help of local shelters and the charity of others, she was often able to find food and a temporary
place to stay.
Florence did get better, she was able to get the treatment she needed to get back on her feet. When
her ex-husband died, Florence was shocked to discover that he had put away a nice sum of money
for her. She used it to buy her own house which she is living in today. Florence loves her home and,
because of her history, it means a great deal to her.
Feeling safe in her home is equally important; Florence spent enough of her life in fear. In addition
to the trauma of living on the streets, a burglar kicked in the door of one of her previous homes. So,
when Florence discovered that someone had broken the glass on her basement door, all that fear
came rushing back. She couldn’t sleep or eat knowing that person may come back. “It was scary.
I didn’t know what I was going to do, ” Florence remembered. On a fixed income, Florence barely
has enough to pay her mortgage, her groceries, her utilities, and her medicine.
Florence was referred to St. Andrew’s minor home repair program, “Project Independence.” We
were able to get her door repaired in a few days. “Their handyman, John, was such a wonderful man.
He fixed my basement door AND he also fixed the lock on my front door and my security door…
I was feeling so vulnerable and having someone to help meant so much to me. I just can’t thank you
enough,” she explained.
So many seniors, like Florence, by no fault of their own, find themselves in need of a little
help. Florence is just one of the seniors who is able to live safely in their home thanks to
your generosity. Thank you.

St. Andrew’s Friends
Friends is a group of individuals that come together for one cause…to help seniors.
Our mission is simple:
• Raise the profile of St. Andrew’s and always spread the word
• Raise funds for those who need it most
• Provide Quality of Life Programs to low-income communities
For many years now, we have been working as a team to help improve the lives of thousands
of seniors. We are always looking for new, innovative ways to provide even better resources to
the seniors that we so dearly love…and we have fun doing it.
If you would like to be a part of our efforts, please contact Ashley at 314-678-1245.
Letter from Terry Coleman
Dear Friends,
Worry Less Thanks to our Friends
This past year was certainly a year of excitement for the Friends of St. Andrew’s. Not only did we
host an amazing event, our 2nd Annual Derby Brunch on May 5th, but we also went full steam ahead
in our recruitment efforts! In June, Friends member Anna Harris hosted a party in her home to help
recruit new members for our mission and it certainly paid off, resulting in 5 amazing new members:
Bob Bess, Cralene Davis, Lionelle Elsesser, Jeanie Stewart and Sharon Wilson. We are so grateful to
have them as part of our group.
We also served over 600 seniors with our Adopt-A-Senior program, and we would like to thank
Walgreens, the Assistance League, and all of our dedicated donors and volunteers that helped make
this possible. With the help of Opera Theater of St. Louis, our seniors were given a new Quality of
Life experience and got to learn all about the Opera! We are so thankful to have all of the wonderful
volunteers and friends that help impact our seniors lives in a positive, important way. We are always
interested in finding new people to join us in supporting the health and well-being of seniors in need.
If you would like to join our Friends group, please contact Ashley Turigliatto at 314-678-1245.

Friends Programs
Transportation: To help assure low-income seniors will have the ability to get to and from the
pharmacists, grocery stores, doctors appointments and more, the Friends Group funds a bus that
provides more than just transportation to residents – it opens the door for increased social activity,
grants greater physical mobility, provides a sense of dignity, and fosters independence.
Adopt-A-Senior: Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and companies, our Adopt-A-Senior
program was more successful than ever. This year, over 600 low-income seniors had an extra special
Holiday Season! Seniors living in our low-income communities each received a Walgreens gift card,
while over 60 seniors who we serve in their homes received generous presents such as clothing,
cookware, fruit, gift cards, mattresses, refrigerators, computers, furniture, TV’s and even a stove!
The feedback from the seniors was one of appreciation and thankfulness!
Adopt-A-Senior
reached over
600
low-income seniors
in 2013.
Quality of Life Programs: Friends further strives to enhance the lives of seniors through quality
of life programs. Whether it is through music, gardening, or love of animals, the Friends work to
bring joy to our low-income residents.
Lorenzo
Lorenzo was just one of the seniors who benefited from the AdoptA-Senior program. A proud veteran, he wasn’t about to ask anyone for help but his
caregiver asked us to help on his behalf. She said his mattress was more than
15 years old. It was totally worn out and causing him tremendous back pain.
Thanks to the generosity of our friends, Lorenzo not only got a new mattress but he
also received new pajamas and dish towels. His caregiver said the mattress has made
an incredible difference in his daily life. His back pain has greatly decreased.
All of the seniors in the Adopt-A-Senior program have fixed incomes that are near
or well below the poverty level. It is extremely difficult to afford essentials like food,
medicine, and basic household cleaning products so the idea of buying new clothes
or a bed, is just impossible.

St. Andrew’s Derby Brunch
The 2nd Annual Derby Brunch, hosted by the Friends of St. Andrew’s, was a spectacular event that not only raised
over $25,000 for our seniors in need, but also dazzled our taste buds and gave us an excuse to wear gorgeous hats!
Derby Chairs, Lana Shepek and Jessica Denham, led a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers to ensure that this
event was one to remember. Our guests enjoyed delicious food and drinks from several local restaurants and
caterers, such as River City Casino, Zettie’s Confections, Spirits of St. Louis, and Sweet Divine. We were all in
awe of the grandeur of the Magic Chef Mansion, and even the light rain couldn’t stop us from enjoying live music
and pictures with a live race horse! The event is quickly becoming a St. Andrew’s staple, and we hope you will
join us next time, as we are always adding new and exciting things to this party.

Meet Elinor
Thanks to your generous contributions to St. Andrew’s Charitable Foundation, Elinor has
called St. Andrew’s Tower Grove Manor home for nearly 15 years. Elinor is 97. She was
born in Southeast Missouri and moved with her family to St. Louis when she was very
young. She worked at Famous Barr downtown in the 1940s and met her husband there.
Her husband worked for the fire department and they bought a house in South City where
they raised their two children. Sadly, Elinor’s beloved husband passed away in 1968. Elinor
continued to live in South City, the neighborhood they loved until about 15 years ago. Elinor
had been renting an apartment from her good friend when her good friend had to sell the
building and move into a nursing home. Although Elinor wasn’t quite ready, she decided
that she might as well find a place where she could age comfortably. Two of her friends from
church lived at St. Andrew’s Tower Grove Manor and they loved it. “It sounded like they
were really having fun there; so, I scheduled and appointment to see it and I moved in shortly
after. Elinor said her friends were right; Tower Grove was a wonderful community with great
people and fun activities. It wasn’t far from her church so she really loved it.
A few years later, Elinor was well settled in Tower Grove Manor and loved the community.
Unfortunately, she had lost some of her fixed income and realized she could no longer afford
to live there. Devastated, she went to the manager and told her that she would have to move
out. To her surprise, the manager said that she might be able to do something to help. Thanks
to generous contributions to St. Andrew’s Charitable Foundation, we have been able to
supplement Elinor’s payments so that she could continue to make Tower Grove her home.
Elinor is just one of our financial aid recipients. Through our Financial Assistance
Program, St. Andrew’s Charitable Foundation helps alleviate some of the financial
burden of some residents by paying a portion of their monthly bill. Thanks to the donations
of our generous supporters, we are able to prevent the displacement of wonderful people like
Elinor who will continue to live life to the fullest without worrying about having to leave her
new home.

We are thrilled to report that Emerson has, once again, generously offered
to be the Lead Sponsor of Ageless Voices. The Ageless Voices Lecture Series
was created to engage St. Louis seniors and the St. Louis community in
continued learning while promoting St. Andrew’s mission and vision of a society where all elders are
respected, productive, secure, and fulfilled.
Last year, Ageless Voices served as a forum for all seniors to continue to live active lives and be
involved in our community through partnerships with various local organizations. The 2013 Ageless
Voices Presentations hosted more than 200 St. Louis seniors and included the Touhill Performing Arts
Center, U.S. Parks Ulysses S. Grant National Historical Site, the Holocaust Museum and St. Louis
Public Radio.
The program’s goal is that, through continued education experiences, we will inspire the St. Louis
senior population, while also sharing with them the plight of many St. Louis seniors who have
outlived their resources.
The 2014 Ageless Voices Series kicked off at the Missouri Botanical Garden for an in-depth
presentation on the Orchid Show on March 5. This year’s series will include Express Scripts, the
St. Louis Mercantule Library, and a day trip to the Lincoln Museum in Springfield, Illinois. Please

to stay in one of our facilities by proving financial assistance.
• $500: Ensure that a senior can remain safely in their home by providing a
much needed minor home repair such as installing a handrail in their bathtub
or fixing a broken door.
• $250: Can provide a low-income senior with two weeks of home care to assist
in their everyday needs like preparing meals and bathing.
• $100: Can help pay for transportation services to the grocery store, medical
appointments and other outings for seniors living in our communities.
