A
rt isn’t just a fun pastime. Art pulls our
residents out of isolation. It lowers anxiety
and depression in seniors with memory
loss. It even helps reduce the need for life-dulling
medications in certain residents. Northaven and its
partners are weaving art into our program to help
residents experiencing memory loss or dementia
and, just as importantly, to help others keep their
healthy brains longer.
With our partners — Taproot Theatre,
Elderwise, Silver Kite Community Arts, Music &
Memory Project, Eldergrow Horticulture Program
for Elders and artist Melissa Koch — and our own
Wellness Team, residents are dancing, painting,
listening to music, gardening and engaging in
improvisational theater.

Northaven stepped into the world of crowd
funding with a Go-Fund-Me campaign for
emergency repairs to our assisted living
elevator. We raised almost $15,000 including
generous gifts from members of the Elevator
Constructors Union, Local 19 and from the
Union’s own fund.

orthaven is part of the solution to Seattle’s
growing housing affordability crisis.
Seniors are among those most displaced
by rapidly rising rents in the city. With 196 units of
truly affordable low-income senior housing and our
continued commitment to serving seniors in assisted
living who cannot afford to pay, Northaven provides
a significant housing safety net for seniors.
We are also well on our way to providing
additional housing on land we have secured adjacent
to our existing community. We are into the planning
and design process. Northaven will add more than
150 critically needed rental units to help address the
low-income housing shortage in Seattle.

Most of our seniors live on fixed incomes and
their resources are sometimes exhausted by medical
care, especially as they live longer. For many, we are
their last hope for housing as they age. We stand
between them and homelessness. We are committed
to providing them safe housing in an environment
that is dignified and gracious. We are committed to
providing high-quality services, coordination and
partnerships with other service providers to address
the often complicated health needs of our residents.
