Munro Message from the Office We’d like to take this opportunity to truly and sincerely thank our GAG School Advisory Council (SAC). Formerly known as Parent Council, the SAC meets monthly to discuss the learning agenda and the direction of the school. Parents are always welcome to join us. You do not have to be a ―member‖, nor sit on any committees..you may simply come, listen and hear what we have to say. This past month, Mrs. Cook (Grade 1/2) spoke to parents about Growth Mindset and the importance that making, and accepting, mistakes as a part of learning and brain development has on children at a young age. SAC approved a new popcorn machine for us and a coffee urn, both of which will serve us well over many upcoming events. Thank You SAC!! Please join us at our next SAC meeting on Tuesday , May 10 at 6:30 pm in our Learning Commons. We thoroughly enjoyed our Volunteer Appreciation Social on Thursday April 28. Thanks to Mrs. P-T, Mrs. Chrastina, Mrs. Powell, Mrs. Teather, Mrs. Csikos and Mr. Haining for their support and of course all of our amazing volunteers! Please put Thursday, June 9 on your calendars for FUN FAIR!! This has always been a big tradition for GAG and a source of funding for us. We know the date is a bit different his year, due to EQAO dates being somewhat different, but we appreciate your flexibility and your support. Also, the Hairy Challenge is coming quickly and Mrs. Lehne may very well lose her pony tail if we reach 30 pony tails donated!! EQAO testing will run from Wednesday, May 25th—Wednesday June 1st for our Grade 6 students. It will run from Wednesday June 1-Wednesday June 8 for our Grade 3 students. Please do not book any appointments during this time if at all possible. A healthy breakfast and lots of rest would also be beneficial. Thank you for your support in advance! Our volunteers were recognized at our annual Volunteer Appreciation on Thursday, April 28 at our Courage assembly and afterwards at a reception with refreshments. Thank you to all of our Glynn A. Green volunteers, we truly appreciate all that you do for us! Classes For September The staffing process for a new school year always continues through the summer and often requires ―fine tuning‖ during the first weeks of September. Staff changes may be occurring over the course of the next two months and therefore the school organization has not yet been finalized. When we organize classes, a great deal of consideration goes into the placement of students for the next year. Where there is more than one grade, the staff takes into account the children’s needs in order to provide an appropriate academic and social environment. Regarding class placement, if your child has any significant learning/education needs which you feel should be considered, be sure to contact the principal in writing stating these factors no later than May 31st. You will receive a letter regarding your child’s class placement on the last day of school . Track and Field Day This year’s Glynn A. Green Track and Field Meet will take place on Monday, May 16. The rain date is Tuesday, May 17. The 1500 m event will take place on Friday, May 13 @ 11:15 am and the peewee long jump will take place at 1:45 pm. All students from grades 3 to 8 are expected to participate. If your son/daughter is unable to participate due to any reason: illness, injury, etc., please provide his/her teacher with a letter excusing him/her from participation. A work package will be supplied by his/her homeroom teacher and supervision will be provided from a Glynn A. Green staff member who is not involved with the Track and Field meet. Events will commence at 9:30 and run until approximately 3:10. We welcome students to bring canopies and umbrellas as protection from the sun and/or rain, however, tents will not be allowed because students inside of tents can not be properly supervised or found if late for events. Students will not be permitted to play music during the day as it prevents them from hearing announcements being made. Be sure your son/daughter is dressed for the weather (hat, t-shirt, shorts, proper running shoes, layers of clothes to combat the cold, and sun-screen). A schedule was sent home earlier in the week. Mrs. Corey, Mr. Rigg, Mrs. Holmes Music Monday May 2nd Launched in 2005 by The Coalition for Music Education, Music Monday is the world’s largest single event dedicated to raising awareness for music education. This year the song/anthem is titled ―We Are One‖ composed by 17-year old Canadian songwriter Connor Ross. Niagara Regional Science Fair and Spoken Word Our Grade 8 students who attended science fair were Danya R. and Sejal K. Their project topic was: Can Stem cells be used to construct a vital organ? They represented Glynn A Green well. The spoken word project students were: Gillian S., Jessica B., Devin C., Chris B., and Olivia E. During the day we went to different workshops which involved using our voice whether that be in song, poem, singing or acting. Gillian and Chris co-developed a song with instrumentals. Olivia, Jessica and Devin shared in the experience of Shakespeare in modern words and terminology. It was a great event filled with drama/song writing and using our voice! Thanks to Mrs. Verwey for preparing and accompanying our group. Junior Boys and Girls Basketball Junior Boys Basketball The Junior Boys Basketball Team enjoyed a really great season this year. The boys finished the regular season by finishing 2nd in the league standings, but fell just short in a tough semi-final against Gordon. Fortunately, after beating Richmond in the Consolation Final, the boys were able to qualify for the DSBN Tournament. At the tournament at Brock University, the boys came out strong, winning 4 of their 5 pool games and finishing second in a really strong pool of teams. The 2nd place finish put them in a tough semifinal matchup against A.K. Wigg, where the boys lost a close, tough battle. Mr. Wright and Mrs. Wood would like to congratulate the boys on an outstanding season. Team members include: Adam, Aakash, Samuel, Connor, Brendan, Cole, Jacob, Lucas, Alex, Matt K., Owen, Matt L., Ethan, Luca and Grady. Junior Girls Basketball The Junior Girls recently completed their basketball season. Playing in Tier 1 in league play the team met solid teams that often had many experienced players. Despite this the Gators always tried their best and gave a few teams a good run. The Girls always conducted themselves in a manner that demonstrated sportsmanship and fair play. They were positive and listened closely to their coaches in all practices and games. Thanks to Sydney G and Emma H for helping coach the team. Thanks also goes out to all the individuals who helped with scorekeeping throughout the season. Team members are: Payton V, Hannah S, Valerie L, Jenna D, Jayna Parent, Patricia C, Tess B, Ava C, Hailey B, Maiya B, Katharine B, Tessa B, Carly E and Juliette F. Thanks to Mr. Rigg and Mrs. Holmes for coaching our team. Chess From Mr. Mako and Mr. Campbell Congratulations to the chess team who had strong finish at the DSBN finals earlier in April. The following people represented Glynn A Green at the finals: In Grade 5: Samuel J. and Aakash S. In Grade 7: Aiden M. and Jeffery S. In Grade 8: Drew C., Ben S. and Joel T. We are especially proud that Ben and Drew tied for 1st place in the Grade 8 pool to advance to the Ontario Chess finals in Toronto. The team is to be congratulated on their expert play and good sportsmanship. Thanks again to everyone who came to try out this year. Badminton Results Area 2 Tournament Thursday April 28, 2016 Congratulations to the members of our Intermediate Badminton team who participated in the Area 2 Tournament at Centennial S.S. Welland. Commendable effort and stellar performance was seen from all members throughout the day as they mutually supported and encouraged each other. Special Recognition goes to the Girls Single player, Danya R, who won 5 of 7 matches in her pool, and to the Mixed Doubles players, Kieley P. and Harmon N., who won 5 of their 7 matches. Congratulations to the Boys Doubles players, Ben S. and Ryan B., and to the Mixed Double players, Mady S., and Owen L., who advanced to the finals to finish 2nd overall in their event. Congratulations to the Girls Doubles players Sydney G. and Emma H. and to the Boys Singles player Tanner B. who advanced to the finals and who finished First overall in their event! We look forward to their next tournament at Brock University on May 4th. Thanks to Mme. Duncan and Mrs. Holmes for coaching our team this year! DSBN Road Race Congratulations to Tessa J. who was the first in her age category to cross the finish line and the second female overall to finish at the DSBN Road Race held on Sunday, April 24th!! She finished 31st overall (that’s out of more than 500 people!!) We are so proud of you Tessa! Math Olympics This year four intermediate students; Christine K, Owen D, Sajel K and Ben B were selected to represent Glynn A. Green at the annual Math Olympiad on April 21st at Club Roma. During this event, these students competed in three different contests - the individual test, a paired test and team relay (no, running shoes were not required!). The team faced off against 72 other schools from both the Public and Catholic school boards and with tremendous teamwork and perseverance they placed 9 th and were literally only 2 correct questions away from finishing in 3rd place. Thank you and congratulations to all of our ―Mathletes‖ who competed in this year's competition as well as to everyone else who came out to the sessions throughout the past few weeks. You all did a fantastic job! Thanks to Mr. Campbell for organizing and preparing our team! GLYNN A. GREEN FUN FAIR COME OUT AND JOIN US ON THURSDAY, June 9th ! Help us celebrate another wonderful Fun Fair evening at Glynn A. Green on Thursday, June 9th , 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome! It is a community event. Silent auction, bouncers, games, pop corn, cotton candy, freezies, beef on a bun….we have it all! Bakers, Cookie Makers, calling on you to make goodies for our Bake Sale. Items can be dropped off to the gym any time on Thursday, June 9th. Thank you!! Items need to be peanut free and please include a list of ingredients. Earth week events! Throughout Earth Week April 18-22, students and staff participated in the playground Clean-up. We worked together to clean up our school yard and repair some of the willow arches in our outdoor classroom. Students in the Primary Division (1F, 1/2 C, 2PT, 2/3 L, 3 H, and 3/4R) participated in a varieof cross-graded Eco activities on Earth Day that centered around the message of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax. Members of the Eco Team will be participating in the 6th Annual DSBN Eco Summit on May 11th at Club Roma. This year, the summit will be focused on celebrating the contributions of eco-minded students by providing a range workshops and activities throughout the day. ty of Isaac Riehl Dance-a-thon Our Kids Helping Kids Club and all our Glynn A Green students helped raise over $4500.00 towards helping a Syrian Refugee Family. This amazing giving is a true sign that our children understand and appreciate the importance of a global family! Thank you to Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Haining, Mrs. Cook, and all the club kids and parent volunteers for their efforts. A very special Thank You to Mrs. Holmes class, and especially Tess, for their efforts in raising almost $1000.00 for this cause. Way to go Gator Nation! Hairy Challenge Mrs. Lehne has decided to donate her pony tail IF we get 30 pony tail donations. So please let Mrs. Jeffery now of your intentions as soon as possible. At present we have 20 participants. Remember...your hair will grow back and you will provide dignity for those who are suffering. Monday, June 13th will be the day we cut our pony tails!! If anyone is interested in donating to this very worthwhile cause, information sheets and permission forms will be available from the office or call Susan (parent volunteer) 905-8928827 or email [email protected] with any questions. Please, please consider donating to this very worthwhile cause. It won’t cost you anything and you have the power to change someone’s life! Message from our Public Health Nurse Enjoy the many outdoor locations in Niagara that are smoke-free. In Niagara, all municipal and regional properties are smoke-free. For more information or quit smoking support, contact the Tobacco Hotline at 905-688-8248, ext. 7393 SUMMER HEAT We are pleased to offer SUMMER HEAT, a primary Summer Learning Program, again this year. The program will run from Monday, July 11th to Friday, July 29th for students entering JK to grade 4 in the fall of 2016. Kindergarten Kick Start is for students entering junior and senior kindergarten in the fall, while Funshine Kids is for students entering grades 1, 2, 3 and 4. This three week program is entirely FREE, but space is limited so please be sure to register early. Daily lessons at all sites will incorporate FNMI perspectives and teachings. Registration can be done online beginning the middle of May. The program will begin at 8:15 a.m. with breakfast provided, and it will end at 12:15 p.m. Students will be involved in a variety of learning opportunities throughout the morning, with a focus on literacy, numeracy and active living. We are excited about being able to offer this amazing program to our families.
