partnerships 2009 – 2010 ANNUAL REPORT “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller ALPHONSUS ACADEMY & CENTER FOR THE ARTS annual report 2009 – 2010 TABLE OF CONTENTS Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts provides a rigorous education combining academic excellence, an arts-integrated curriculum, and a strong Catholic foundation. Our unique approach ensures the development of the whole child in a community that believes that “who” our children become is just as important as “what” our children achieve. 06 Letter from the Principal AACA Partnerships 08 DePaul University 12 Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education 16 Artists in Residence 20 Our Inner Circle: Parents, Parish, and Neighbors Acknowledgements 24 School Advisory Board and Staff 26 Donors, Event Volunteers, School Program Volunteers 41 School Programs 42 Financial Summary Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts | 5 letter from our principal Dear AACA Family, We have taken on the tremendous task of seeking to educate the whole child by providing an education experience based on three pillars – academic excellence, arts integration, and a caring Catholic community – supported by a strong foundation of professional development for the educators working with our students. We go about this task by building PARTNERSHIPS. In a partnership, a group of people comes together and works toward a common purpose. At AACA, our common purpose is to nurture students to become critical thinkers, persistent problem solvers, passionate artists, and thoughtful members of a community. Throughout this annual report, we will describe key partnerships that AACA has developed carefully and intentionally in order to be more effective in our mission: · DePaul University · C HICAGO Arts PartnershipS in Education (CAPE) · Artists in Residence · O ur Inner Circle: Parents, Parish, and Neighbors Why invest time and precious energy into building these partnerships? Enhanced Resources Diverse Connections and Reflections First, our partnerships have an exponential affect on our resources. For example, our exchange with DePaul enables AACA access to potential teacher candidates, as well as the university’s faculty talent pool and multiple on-campus resources. This allows your tuition dollar to have the effect of ten, the capacity to serve one child to become the capacity to serve many, and the educational opportunities available to students to expand immensely in number and quality. Furthermore, these formal collaborative efforts create a more effective community of adults working together to serve our students. Our partners bring additional energy, skill sets, experiences, and perspectives to the table, creating a wealth of ideas from which to draw upon in achieving our mission. CAPE artists and teachers blend their subject knowledge to co-plan units for our students. Our Pastor and parish staff teach religious education units and are a constant presence in our school. Our parents organize fundraising events, offer their expertise as board members, and coordinate to assist families in need. Without this additional infusion of human capital coming into our school building to enhance the expertise present in our own faculty and staff, the student experience would lack the depth, diversity, and richness that we currently offer. Credentials and Opportunities Secondly, these partnerships elevate our role in the community as a long-standing academic institution. Our partnership with CAPE brings us together with several other dynamic public and private schools. Moreover, both CAPE and our Artists in Residence bring various professional artists into the AACA community for collaborative efforts, giving us contact with the vast Chicago artistic community. In our exchange with DePaul, a handful of AACA administrators and teachers have the opportunity to teach university classes at both the doctoral and graduate levels. With this collective, positive exposure, we are top of mind with many organizational leaders when new opportunities arise. Teamwork as a Model Finally, and perhaps most importantly, these partnerships serve as models for our children to see cooperation, collaboration, and consensus building in action. We want our students to witness that these are the elements that build strong communities. DePaul University The partnerships that you will read about have been built by many individuals, including students, parents, teachers, support staff, artists, and community members. Once again, we celebrate our accomplishments, and acknowledge the work ahead. Thank you for being a our journey. partner in Dr. Megan Stanton - Anderson Principal, Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE CAPE 6 | Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts When people come together to solve problems using these elements, the decisions made and the paths chosen are more likely to be respected and sustained by the community. We want our students to understand that the inclusion of all stakeholders assures them that their voice is heard, and that by being a part of the process, some piece of each participant is in the final product. Embracing these elements will serve our students well as they leave the safety of our classrooms and hallways, and go forth into the world to be members and leaders of communities. PARENTS, PARISH, & NEIGHBORS “Hundreds of DePaul students have assisted at AACA and they overwhelmingly report how impressed they are with the dedication of the teachers, the quality of the curriculum, and the overall community spirit that is present.” — Professor Roxanne Owens, Ph.D., DePaul Univerisity depaul university In 2005, AACA and DePaul University collaborated on professional development, planting the seeds of what has proved to be a substantial partnership in support of our pillars of academic excellence and arts integration. The core of this partnership is AACA’s participation in the Professional Development Schools network. Professional Development Schools (PDS) are innovative institutions formed through partnerships between professional education programs and PK-12 schools. Their mission is professional preparation of teacher candidates, faculty development, inquiry directed at the improvement of practice, and enhanced student learning. The nature of the network is symbiotic. DePaul supports AACA by collaborating on our professional development program. This collaboration involves access to myriad resources through DePaul. In exchange, DePaul education majors studying to become teachers complete clinical experiences in AACA classrooms. Teacher Benefits The PDS network provides our teachers with meaningful opportunities for professional growth. To begin, DePaul engages AACA teachers in a unique teacher-mentoring program. Our own more veteran teachers participate in a series of professional 8 | Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts development experiences that train them to act as mentors to their colleagues in their first and second years of teaching. This provides a formal support system for these new teachers as they climb their learning curve in the classroom. In addition, AACA teachers host DePaul pre-service teachers in their classrooms, guiding them in understanding the complexities of teaching. This experience affords another venue for AACA teachers to reflect on their own practice. Finally, AACA receives a course voucher at DePaul for each student-teacher placement. This allows our teachers to further their professional development at the university level. Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts | 9 DEPAUL UNIVERSITY cont. Student Benefits AACA students are the ultimate benefactors of the PDS partnership. As our teachers grow and evolve in their practice, they become stronger teachers of our students. Moreover, the presence of pre-service teachers provides “extra hands” in the classroom that allow children to receive additional individualized and smaller group instruction. Furthermore, sponsoring student teachers allows AACA to observe potential teacher candidates over an extended period of time. On multiple occasions, AACA interviewed and hired exceptional student teachers. The advantages of this hire for our students are many – the new teacher is familiar with the school culture, curriculum, and systems, and AACA has already invested time into their preparation. Since becoming a PDS school in 2006, our partnership with DePaul University has evolved in breadth and depth, creating additional opportunities and areas of collaboration. Teaching Teachers In recent years, AACA staff members received the opportunity to teach advanced education courses at DePaul. Last year this included AACA’s Principal at the doctoral level, and the Assistant Principal along with the fourth and fifth grade teachers at the graduate level. Teaching at the college level deepens our practice as administrators and teachers, and gives AACA exposure in, as well as the opportunity to play a leadership role for, the greater education community. Collaborative Literacy Project DePaul and AACA, together with Old Saint Mary, St. Josaphat, and Immaculate Conception schools, partner in the Collaborative Literacy Project for grades K-8. The purpose of this project is to provide teachers with a support network focused on the development and implementation of a balanced literacy program of instruction. This project provides professional development in the elements of a quality literacy program, a forum in which teachers from these schools can discuss instructional practice, and development of a data collection process so that student progress can be documented and analyzed. Teachers receive the opportunity to travel to partner schools to observe other teachers engaging their students in the program. The benefits to AACA students are profound: well-trained teachers with access to a support network, engaging in a program that measures results and adjusts accordingly. Middle School Projects At AACA, a primary goal is to prepare students and their families for both high school and the world of higher education by solidifying their basic skills across all content areas. Through our partnership, students are involved in units of study that are co-taught by DePaul faculty and AACA Middle School teachers. A great example of this facet in action is the Middle School Radio Script Project. For two months, students engage in a mystery genre-writing unit. DePaul professors guide students to an understanding of historical and cultural perspectives represented in Film Noir, eventually leading 8th grade students to write their own radio program scripts. The unit concludes with both 7th and 8th grade students visiting the DePaul radio station to record their scripts. As a result of these projects, our students gain a level of preparation for university life as well as an understanding of why their current program of study is so critical to their future success. Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts | 11 “This partnership results in the kind of challenging, engaging teaching and learning that our children need for success in the 21st century. CAPE is grateful to work at a school With such responsive and committed teachers, administration, and parents.” Chicago Arts PartnershipS in Education At AACA, our curriculum is designed to carefully integrate a variety of art mediums into our core content areas. Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE) is a major partner in achieving meaningful arts integration in our classrooms. The mission of CAPE is to advance the arts as a vital strategy for improving teaching and learning by increasing students’ capacity for academic success, critical thinking, and creativity. This collaboration creates innovative partnerships between classroom teachers and practicing artists. AACA has partnered with CAPE since 2008, and the resulting work has been nothing short of astonishing. In the 2009-10 school year, AACA teachers and CAPE artists worked together to create a variety of meaningful units. — A rnold Aprill, Founding & Creative Director, CAPE First Grade: HeartS, Bones, and Minds In the fall, first grade teachers and a multi-media CAPE artist collaborated to create the science unit Hearts, Bones, and Minds. Students explored the organs, skeletal system, circulatory system, and functions of the human body through a variety of media: silhouettes, bone drawings, “blood” paintings, organ cut outs, skeleton “pop-up” books, and poetry. The culmination of the unit was a multimedia installation designed to allow families to walk through the evidence of their children’s creativity and knowledge. At this event, students performed their original poems and created an “orchestra” of body sound effects. Third Grade: Flow, Electricity, and Chicago History As a culmination to their school year, third graders connected multiple aspects of the curriculum through the science and social studies unit, 12 | Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts Flow, Electricity, and Chicago History. Through the collaboration of the third grade teacher and a CAPE dance artist, students explored the science of electricity and the history of Chicago through dance, organized around the big idea of “Flow”. Students expressed the knowledge they gained studying the four stars of Chicago’s historical city flag, the relationship electricity played in the development of the city, and how the concept of Flow was present within these events through movement pieces. Students then performed their movement pieces in one final dance to the music, “Lake Shore Driving” by Duran Duran. CHICAGO ARTS PARTNERSHIPS IN EDUCATION cont. Middle School: Every Picture Tells a Multi-Media Story Another example of this partnership involved our middle school students engaged in a language arts and communication arts unit, Every Picture Tells a Multi-Media Story. The middle school teachers worked with a CAPE video artist to challenge students to represent narrative through video, encouraging them to make a wide range of intentional aesthetic choices. Students began the unit by reading and analyzing myths, legends, and graphic novels. Then students learned about storyboards and utilized this tool to create their own narrative. Using the storyboard as a guide, students learned how to represent their creations in video using iMovie, iPhoto, and Audacity. The students proved themselves to be adept at making their own choices about which media best served the telling of their stories. Arts to Enhance Academics There are many more examples of this partnership in action throughout our history with CAPE. This collaboration informs our development as a learning community that uses the arts to create and enhance learning for students. CAPE is an organization that has become recognized as a leader in the field of school improvement through the arts. Moreover, CAPE’s partnerships serve as a living laboratory for a community of researchers dedicated to understanding how teaching through the arts improves student achievement. We have seen evidence of this improved achievement in our own test scores, and we see evidence of improved student engagement in the enthusiasm our students display when sharing what they learn. One parent echoed this sentiment on a response poster after walking through the Hearts, Bones, and Minds multi-media installation - “I am amazed what kids learn when given the chance to learn through the arts”. Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts | 15 “The nature of my work at AACA is to teach an integrated lesson plan with a relevant connection to Dance. To enhance an academic unit through Dance, not just compliment it.” — Mrs. Katia Marzolf Borione, Performing Arts and Dance Teacher, AACA Ms. Aiello’s Kindergarten Visual Arts Class – Rendering of Paul Klee’s work Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts | 17 Artists in Residence At AACA, we recognize the arts as a key element in transforming our school into a vibrant, creative, and successful learning community. Essential partners in this effort are our Artists in Residence – four part-time art teachers in the mediums of music, dance, and visual arts. In order to round out our arts integration program and further enhance our academic program, we sought to have Art teachers inside the building who spent the majority of their time outside the building practicing their craft. In an urban setting like Chicago with a rich arts community, we recognized an opportunity to engage teacher-artists who could connect us to this arts community while bringing their experience as practicing artists into our community. These teachers are prolific and established artists in their own right, and have had their work published, displayed in galleries, enjoyed in concerts, and commissioned for public and private collections. Their work at AACA includes teaching dedicated arts classes as well as collaborating with classroom teachers to connect to core content areas. Katia Marzolf Borione Meltem Aktas Performing Arts, Dance Visual Arts Katia Marzolf Borione has been the Dance Teacher at AACA since 2003. She began her formal dance training at age 3 at the Bernice Holmes School of Dance, and by 10 years old she was studying with the former Chicago City Ballet. Meltem Aktas has been teaching painting and visual arts at AACA since 2001. Ms. Aktas has developed a reputation as a leading artist working in the medium of iconography, and has been commissioned for numerous projects by churches, religious communities, and individuals. Each year, Mrs. Borione partners with each classroom teacher in the production of the AACA Spring Dance Show. This masterpiece showcases the integration of dance and core curriculum subject areas. For example, one class worked on a simple machine unit as a part of their science class. For their performance, they integrated the unit physically in dance to better understand the movements and functions of a screw, wheel and axel, inclined plane, lever, wedge, and pulley. Outside of AACA, Mrs. Borione has become a model instructor with regard to designing and implementing arts units connected in meaningful ways to core curriculum. She was recruited to talk about the importance of arts integration to Milwaukee Public School Teachers, presenting how she uses dance to enhance academic units to approximately 200 K-5 classroom teachers. This was a wonderful opportunity for Mrs. Borione and an honorable reflection on AACA’s work in education. Throughout her tenure at AACA, Ms. Meltem has led AACA students in participating in the biennial International Art Exchange for Peace. Participants create a work of art in a medium of their choosing, expressing their vision of global peace and goodwill. Last year, AACA students exchanged their artwork and letters with students from Denizati Elementary School in Istanbul, Turkey. Participating in this event gives AACA students the opportunity to connect with thousands of people simultaneously sending messages of peace and unity around the world. Scott Arkenberg Fine Arts, Music Scott Arkenberg joined the AACA faculty as our music teacher in 2004, bringing over thirty years of classroom experience to our students. Mr. Arkenberg holds advanced degrees in Chorale Music, and has conducted Messiah concerts in both Chicago and Los Angeles for 25 years. In 2008 and 2009, Mr. Arkenberg led our AACA children’s choir in the annual Holiday Pops Chicago Concert, which he founded in 2001. Mr. Arkenberg conducts this citywide event, which features the AACA choir, an adult choir, and a 120-piece orchestra. Susan Aiello Visual Arts Susan Aiello joined the AACA faculty in 2006, teaching painting and visual arts. She is the illustrator of three children’s books - A Hat Like That, My Blanket Burt, and In the Sky – as well as numerous educational books. Ms. Aiello has a passion for introducing students to artists at a young age. In last year’s Kindergarten class, she guided students through an exploration 18 | Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts of the work of Paul Klee in the design of several paintings that were auctioned off at our annual gala. Students saw their work from a blank canvas to a masterpiece coveted by many. Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts | 19 “It’s the people who make up a community, and when people work together, we can understand the thoughts and feelings of others. Our partnerships allow us to get to know one another so we can all be a support structure for the school when needed.” —P atrick Burke, Current Parent, Former Fathers’ Club President OUR INNER CIRCLE: Parents, Parish, and NEIGHBORS Our mission states that “who” our children become is just as important as “what” our children achieve. Our parents, parish, and neighbors are our most essential partners in this facet of our mission. These groups collaborate daily with our faculty and staff to support our pillar of creating and providing a caring, Catholic community. Moreover, our three pillars require resources beyond what can be supported by tuition. Our parents work tirelessly to raise funds for the school through various events. They also provide human capital for special school events, day-to-day school routines, as well as service in the form of leadership roles. Parents At AACA, parent involvement is pervasive and revolves around a culture of “pitching in”. There are tens of school events each year – Kinderfest, Thanksgiving Feast, Ice Cream Social, to name a few – that create opportunities for AACA students and families to build a caring community by coming together to celebrate, share with, and serve each other. These events are the rituals that give a seasonal rhythm to our school year, and it is our parents who provide the time, talent, and energy to make them possible. In addition, parents provide support by way of assisting with day-to-day tasks throughout the school. For example, parents assist with supervision at recess via the Kindness Club, serve as Classroom Coordinators, and lend a hand with mailings in the Development Office. This work is a tremendous support for our faculty and staff, allowing them additional time to perform other “heavy lifting” responsibilities. Parents also provide leadership for the school and our students by serving on the School Advisory Board, coaching sports teams, and volunteering as leaders for Girl Scout troops and other clubs. Their willingness to share the responsibility to lead provides valuable input for our administration, as well as expands opportunities for our students. Furthermore, it is our parents who lead, create, execute, and support all of our fundraising events, from Art & Soul to Rocket Run. These efforts are vital to enhancing and sustaining high-quality academic programs. Most importantly, our parents create a caring, Catholic community for our students by supporting each other. When an AACA family is in need, AACA parents are there, making dinners, running errands, and checking in. It is through this collective, shared responsibility that parents have created a culture that allows children to see partnership in action, rather than simply hearing it discussed. Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts | 21 OUR INNER CIRCLE: PARENTS, PARISH, AND NEIGHBORS cont. Parish Our Parish is a crucial partner in creating a caring, Catholic community. Our Pastor supports our school in so many ways, from teaching religious education classes to providing guidance to our administration. The Pastor and parish staff provide critical support to our faculty and staff while preparing our students to receive their sacraments. Finally, our school is an extension of the Parish family. AACA families join the larger body of the parish in Sunday services, building a stronger and more cohesive community through a shared vision for what it means to educate our children spiritually and academically. Our church consistently provides for students a formative experience of what it means to be an active Catholic in a dynamic parish. We know that these experiences will be taken with them into adulthood, as they continue to live their Catholic faith. Neighbors AACA exists within the greater community outside of our walls. This community provides us with the opportunity to reach out to our neighbors and build partnerships through social service. Each school year, teachers and their students select a service project to help neighbors in need. Last year, our preschool students and teachers prepared and bagged lunches for the St. Alphonsus Sandwich Making Project. During the holiday season, AACA first graders donated a new book to send to first graders at other schools in economically depressed neighborhoods. In addition, AACA students wrote letters to the first graders to build a relationship with their new friends. The sixth grade class made quarterly visits to a Lakeview nursing home where they cooked breakfast, played games, and engaged in conversation with the elderly. The AACA Student Council led the entire student body in building a partnership with neighbors in another country by sponsoring a vitamin drive for Haiti. These are just a few examples of our students reaching out to others as a caring, Catholic community. As is appropriate, students are most often on the receiving end of our partnerships - they are the center of our work. Our neighbors provide AACA students with the opportunity to both give and receive, an experience central to human development. 22 | Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts acknowledgements “No one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it." — Rev. Halford E. Luccock, Professor, Yale Divinity School FACULTY AND STAFF 2009–2010 The quality of education that AACA students receive begins and ends with the quality of our teachers and support staff.
