YOUR GIFTS CHANGE EVERYTHING
YOU HELPED US CHANGE LIVES IN 2014 THROUGH YOUR INCREDIBLE
GENEROSITY, AND WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Nobel Prize-winning writer Albert Camus once said that “Real generosity toward the future lies in giving
all to the present.” There is no better way to describe your tremendous support of our patients and our
community in 2014. You not only help Cone Health care for the patients of today, but you are helping
to transform the care of tomorrow.
As generous donors to Cone Health, you are among 2,252 caring people who contributed more than $3.5
million to our network. Your partnership enabled our medical teams to change lives and enhance care and
treatment for thousands of people, regardless of their ability to pay. At the same time, your support will help
us build healthy communities and provide value for future generations. Thank you.
Whether you made a gift to honor or remember someone special, bought a ticket to attend a dinner
or event, made an annual unrestricted gift or a major family gift, you are part of Cone Health. People
in Guilford, Rockingham, Alamance and neighboring counties now benefit more than ever from an
exceptional network of medical professionals and facilities, thanks to your commitment to giving.
This report highlights a few ways your gifts are making a difference and serves as a public acknowledgment
of your generosity. Thank you again for your support in 2014. We look forward to continuing to partner
with you this year and into the future.

CELEBRATION FOR CEO EMERITUS TIM RICE
RAISES $1.1 MILLION
Shirley Frye and Mike Simmons announce the total amount raised by unveiling a check. Tim and Carolynn and the guests react!
M
ORE THAN 750 PEOPLE CELEBRATED CEO EMERITUS TIM RICE’S 36 years
of leadership and service at a Dec. 4, 2014, event that raised more than $1.1 million for the
Cone Health Center for Children.
The celebration was co-chaired by Shirley T. Frye, a longtime educator and community advocate,
and Michael Simmons, MD, retired medical director of Cone Health Pediatric Critical Care Services,
with the help of many volunteers and the Office of Fund Development.
“Tim was instrumental in opening the Center for Children,” said Cone Health CEO Terry Akin.
“These gifts are a true testimony to the respect and gratitude our community holds for Tim and the
trust it places in Cone Health as the steward of this generosity.”
The Center for Children provides a range of medical services to underserved children and adolescents
from birth to age 21, including specialized care for those who are chronically ill, developmentally delayed
or affected by mental health issues. The gifts raised in Tim’s honor are funding a reading program,
an adolescent program and an endowment to pay for patient needs, including educational materials,
emergency patient services, dental supplies, medication and transportation. The endowment will be
named for Tim and his wife, Carolynn.

CONE HEALTH CANCER CENTER AT ALAMANCE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
COMMUNITY HELPS CREATE A
HEALING ENVIRONMENT
Wings to Recovery sculpture soars above the lobby; a viewing deck overlooks the pathway through the Healing Garden.
A
LAMANCE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER’S INVESTMENT IN A STATE-OFTHE-ART CANCER CENTER became a partnership with the community through the Cultivating Hope Capital Campaign.
“The hospital takes care of the medical needs,” says Ted Chandler, co-chair of the campaign, “while
the community’s efforts add those extras that lift spirits and make a hospital stay a better experience.”
The campaign exceeded its goal, raising more than $3 million to add patient-centered amenities —
primarily the Healing Garden and artwork — to the Cancer Center that opened in January 2014.
“Now, chemotherapy patients can look out upon a beautiful space while undergoing treatment.
Families and visitors can find solace as they walk through the Healing Garden. Our employees can
unwind by eating their lunch or dinner at one of the tables along the garden’s edges. We are very
thankful to have this garden,” says Cone Health Senior Vice President and Alamance Regional President
Preston Hammock.
Artistic features in the garden include a sundial created by Casey and Emily Lewis of Beechwood Metal
Works in Burlington. Casey also created the signature eagle sculpture that hangs inside the Cancer
Center and represents the hope patients find through the Wings to Recovery patient support group.
“The Healing Garden provides not only a place where you can rest and reflect, but it gives cancer
patients a sense of hope because you can see life blooming all around you,” says Barbara Byrd, a
Burlington resident, donor and recent cancer survivor.

CONE HEALTH HEART AND VASCULAR SERVICES
HEART PATIENTS BENEFIT FROM NEW
EXERCISE MACHINES, MEDICATION ASSISTANCE
AND CLINICAL RESEARCH
C
HARITABLE GIFTS ARE TRUE LIFESAVERS for a growing number of heart patients
throughout the Cone Health network, whether they receive care in Guilford, Alamance
or Rockingham counties.
“Providing our patients with items most of us take for granted – such as additional medications,
healthy food or transportation – means many more of them have better outcomes after heart surgery
or other procedures,” says Cone Health Heart and Vascular Services Vice President Rich Lundy.
“Without the generosity of so many donors, we could not provide this component of compassionate
care. Our employees also are now helping meet these needs.”
For the second consecutive year, the Advanced Heart Failure clinic (AHF) team in Greensboro organized
a December fundraiser to build up an emergency assistance fund for patients with the greatest needs.
The AHF team uses this money throughout the year to pay for patients’ rides to physician appointments
and gift cards for prescription drug co-pays, delivery of medications and patient care supplies. This
personalized assistance helps patients heal and prevents hospital readmissions.
Charitable gifts helped the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center buy additional recumbent
exercise machines in 2014. These can be life-prolonging tools for patients who are unable to use a
traditional treadmill or walk long distances. Funding for research groups, such as the LeBauer Cardiovascular Research Foundation, also helps
ensure the future health of our communities. “Contributions to research have had a profound impact
on our ability to undertake a variety of critical missions that ultimately get translated directly to
the care of our patients,” says Tom Stuckey, who co-founded the Foundation to promote clinical
research in cardiovascular medicine. “This includes evaluating treatment strategies through registries,
participating in leading clinical trials, and educating our health care teams. Cone Health has been unique
in this regard nationally.”

CONE HEALTH
Art Heals
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
The waiting areas at the Cone Health Cancer Center
at Wesley Long Hospital sometimes resemble a busy
artist’s studio. In the lobby, patients work with clay and
paint while guest artists and the artwork on the walls
serve as inspiration. This form of relaxation and therapy
has become a fundamental part of the medical care that
patients, as well as their loved ones, experience during their
treatment and wellness visits. The new Cone Health Cancer
Center at Alamance Regional Medical Center provides its
patients with similar opportunities.
And in Greensboro, as in Burlington, the power of art in
healing extends outdoors. Work is under way to transform
two acres of unused land adjacent to the Cone Health Cancer
Center at Wesley Long Hospital into outdoor healing spaces.
The vision and inspiration for the Healing Gardens came
from a group of community volunteers, many of whom
are also cancer survivors and major donors. Mary Magrinat,
along with her husband, Cone Health oncologist Gus
Magrinat, MD, have encouraged hundreds of people to
become donors by explaining the vision for this special
place. More than $900,000 has been raised toward the
$1.2 million project. Motivation for donating ranges from
wanting to support amenities for cancer patients to a desire
to see more accessible green spaces in Greensboro.
The motivation for Alexa Aycock is the places to walk. “When
I was with my husband during his treatments, being able
to step away was so important. But there was nowhere nice
outside to get fresh air and clear my head. Now as I look
at the layout of the gardens, I see lots of opportunities to
walk and walk,” Alexa said during a visit to look at progress
on the project.

waiting area at the
Cancer Center.
Alexa Aycock (right) and Mary Magrinat survey progress on
the Healing Gardens.
When completed, gentle walkways will lead to overlooks,
patios and benches so the beauty of the soothing stream,
trees, shrubs, flowers and wildlife can be enjoyed. Patients
and visitors will be able to simply enjoy the outdoors, or
they can participate in patient-focused classes in yoga,
meditation, outdoor painting, gardening and nature study.
The gardens, like the art at the Cancer Center and the
resident artist programs, are funded from charitable gifts.
Local landscape architects and designers, including Studio
Pagliai, as well as engineering and surveying specialists
have donated time to the project. Local nurseries and
landscaping companies are providing in-kind gifts.
The first phase of the Healing Gardens is to be dedicated
in June 2015.

DONORS AND NURSES CELEBRATE SCHOLARSHIPS
“Thank you” was the phrase most often heard during
the first Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Scholarship Celebration in May, which honored
80 donors and nurses.
“You are all helping make the dream come true for Cone
Health to have the best nursing staff and to reach the
goal of 85 percent of our nurses having BSN degrees,”
said Cone Health Executive Vice President and Chief
Nursing Officer Theresa Brodrick, PhD, RN, who also donated
multiple scholarships. In the rapidly changing health care
field, nurses have to acquire new skills and competencies
in patient care as well as in technology, health policy and
leadership. Studies show that BSN nurses contribute to
higher patient satisfaction scores.
Carolynn Rice congratulates Samantha Presnell (left), recipient
of the Carolynn Rice BSN Scholarship, and Jennifer Burns, recipient
of the Kelly Rice Good BSN Scholarship.
More than $600,000 was raised through the Office of Fund
Development to create 100 scholarships for Cone Health
nurses with two-year degrees to enroll in accredited schools
of nursing to earn their BSN degrees. These scholarships
ease any financial burden for Cone Health nurses, who
typically pursue their degrees while still caring for patients
full time.
The second annual celebration for donors and scholarship
nurses will be held on May 8, 2015.

BUILDING A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY
MATT THOMPSON, FOUNDER AND OWNER OF MATTCO METAL WORKS IN REIDSVILLE,
AND HIS WIFE, ERICA, REFLECT ON THE ROLE OF HIS COMPANY IN THE COMMUNITY,
THEIR INVOLVEMENT WITH ANNIE PENN HOSPITAL AND MAKING AND DONATING A
BENCH FOR THE COMMUNITY WALKING TRAIL ON THE HOSPITAL CAMPUS.
“Mattco Metal Works flourishes because of community support.
Relationships are key to the success of any business or
organization. This has led us to meeting some pretty incredible
people associated with Annie Penn Hospital.
“The Annie Penn Hospital Foundation organizes quite a few fundraisers
throughout the year. These events are fun and very entertaining,
which keeps us coming back year after year.
“God has provided for me and Erica, so when the opportunity presented
itself to give to an organization that inspires state-of-the-art health care,
it was obvious we had to give our time and talents to help. The bench
is just one way we can do this. The Walking Trail is so symbolic of our
many community partnerships.
“Like Annie Penn Hospital, we at Mattco want to be a part of the bigger
picture, one that is building a healthier community. When we work
together, no matter how big or small the ways, our citizens become
more comfortable with local health care services. I want the citizens
of Reidsville to use as many resources as possible that are available in
town. We depend on Annie Penn Hospital to provide the community
with health awareness, to educate us on the available services and to
take care of us when we need medical attention.”

NEW BED PROVIDES OPTIMUM CARE
FOR THE MOST FRAGILE BABIES
Thanks to a major gift from Barry and Eugenia Frank,
the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Women’s
Hospital has another Giraffe Omnibed.
“We are glad we can provide the resources for the NICU
to acquire another of these advanced beds for babies who
need every advantage to develop into healthy children,”
Eugenia says.
Among the many types of beds for NICU babies, Giraffe
Omnibeds are considered the ultimate in design and features.
“While they are ideal for all preemies, it is the low birthweight
babies born at 24 weeks gestation who benefit the most.
They usually live in this type of bed for 12 weeks,” says Helen
Mabe, director of the NICU.
These beds have additional safety and monitoring features
to help nurses as they provide round-the-clock care. The beds
can telescope and rotate, making it easier for nurses and
doctors to provide medical care and for parents to watch and
touch their babies.

PARTNERSHIPS IMPROVE HEALTH CARE IN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
The Cone Health Rockingham County Congregational Nurse
Program is helping hundreds of residents improve their access
to health care as the result of partnerships in the community.
The program began in 2012 through a $300,000 grant from
The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to improve access to care
and health outcomes for the underserved, particularly those
who are homeless and Hispanic.
The program pairs a Congregational Nurse with social work
graduate and undergraduate students from North Carolina
A&T State University and the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro. The teams provide holistic approaches to health
and healing.
Improved health and quality of life for hundreds of underserved
people come as a result of the nurses and students meeting
residents in the community, providing health assessments,
identifying barriers to care and forming community partnerships.
From left: Patricia Settle, Rockingham County Coordinator-Congregational
Care Nurse; Lelia Moore, Coordinator, Cone Health Congregational Nurse
Program; Josephine Mabe and Darryl Dunagan from the Rockingham County
Farm Bureau.
Gifts from the community have expanded these partnerships.
For instance, collaboration with the Farm Bureau Health Van
Screening in Reidsville led to a $5,000 grant for follow-up care
for those with chronic diseases. Other partnerships provide
free medications and transportation as well as dental and eye care.
Fourteen area churches also partner to help reach the underserved
population by providing health assessments, counseling,
screenings, educational programs and advocacy.

REACHING UNDERSERVED WOMEN
Through generous funding from Susan G. Komen
Northwest NC, thousands of women are receiving
needed mammograms and follow-up care. The Komen
funding is being used in outreach programs at the Cone
Health Cancer Centers at Wesley Long Hospital and Alamance
Regional Medical Center and through a Rockingham County
partnership with Annie Penn Hospital.
The annual Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run also provides
funding for mammograms for women in need. This year’s
22nd event raised $110,816.
In 2014, Komen provided special funding to continue a
pilot program, Stop Gap. This program pays for diagnostic
mammograms and follow-up diagnostics for uninsured
Guilford County residents and targets African-American and
Hispanic women who have breast symptoms or a history of
breast cancer.
Generous donors also provide significant gifts that support
the work of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program
(BCCCP) in Guilford and Alamance counties.

THE COMMUNITY AND ALAMANCE REGIONAL
RAISE MONEY TO HELP WOMEN IN NEED
The Alamance Regional Charitable Foundation’s
Pink Ribbon Luncheon raised $29,414 to benefit the
Pink Ribbon Fund during an April 15 event.
The fund provides women access to diagnostic procedures they
might not otherwise be able to afford. For women diagnosed
with malignancies, the fund provides for breast cancer therapy
essentials and basic needs while they receive treatment.
Taking the theme Tutus for Tatas, the luncheon featured 11
male volunteers, including Cone Health Senior Vice President
and Alamance Regional President Preston Hammock and Bob
Byrd, a former Alamance Regional vice president and now a
county commissioner. The nine other volunteers represented a
variety of businesses and organizations in Alamance County.
Each volunteer performed in honor or in memory of someone
who has been affected by cancer. The crowd of 270 enjoyed
three choreographed dances.
The volunteer dancers pose after their performance.

VALUES ESTATE PLANNING
In 2014, a generous donor funded a planned giving opportunity to help
Cone Health increase the number of people who want to make a difference
to future patients through a gift from their estate, whether large or small.
Chad Leitch, an attorney with Thompson & Associates, leads these personalized
planned giving preparation sessions. Cone Health chose Thompson & Associates,
an independent firm that works exclusively with not-for-profit organizations, for
its expertise in charitable estate planning strategies.
These one-on-one sessions help people develop a personal financial philosophy
statement. This, along with a financial assessment, guides the development of
a comprehensive estate plan. This fully confidential plan can be shared with or
can involve an individual’s financial planner and attorney. To learn how you can
benefit from this confidential process, contact Bill Porter, Vice President of
Fund Development, at (336)832.9458 or [email protected].
Don Causey, Corporate Director of Security Services at Cone Health, and his
wife, Janet, are among those who have already benefitted from the estate
planning program.
“I hesitantly agreed to participate because I was unsure of its benefits, but I
quickly discovered its value. It is an absolute necessity to control the distribution
of our estate. I also was concerned that our estate is too small. Here again, I
was incorrect, since the size of the estate does not matter. What matters most
is being prepared for the future,” Don says.
Don Causey is in his element at The Moses H. Cone
Memorial Hospital.

Regional Charitable Foundation or the Annie Penn Hospital Foundation is to be used.
Any gift can be in honor or memory of someone special to you.
Unrestricted gifts go to the Area of Greatest Need fund. Typically, this helps patients
with emergency needs or supplements existing support programs.
Designated gifts support the work of a specific hospital, center, program or project.
TYPES OF GIFTS
> Cash gifts can be made through credit/debit card transactions (including online), outright cash, and personal or official checks.
> A Matching Gift through your company’s matching-gift program is an easy way
to increase your donation.
The following types of gifts often have greater impact for Cone Health and for your
philanthropic intention. If you are interested in any of these options, please contact
the appropriate fundraising office first.
> Planned Gifts, including bequests, life-income plans and other options for your estate.
To assist you with this, a confidential and personalized assessment of charitable giving
opportunities through your estate plans is available.

> Real estate and personal property.
