SUMMER PROGRAM 2014
A Message from Town Supervisor
JOHN VENDITTO
Dear Neighbor,
Welcome to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2014 Summer Program. Even at a brief glance you’ll find a wealth of
enjoyable cultural, sports and recreational activities we’re sure will guarantee you a fun and memorable summer.
The Department of Community and Youth Services has planned outstanding programs and events for our
residents of all ages to enjoy. From the Children’s Summer Magical Music & More program to summer events and
field trips for seniors, there are fun programs for everyone.
The Parks Department has done an excellent job preparing acres of park land and sandy beaches to
provide the ideal settings for a summer of non-stop outdoor enjoyment. There are so many opportunities for
recreational fun at our parks, ranging from swimming to year round activities such as ice-skating at the ice-skating
center in Bethpage. In an effort to help residents get the most of their leisure time, the Recreation Division has
some terrific programs aimed at all ages and interests.
My fellow Town Board members and I take pride in the Town of Oyster Bay’s summer recreation and
cultural programs, which are among the finest on Long Island. The Town of Oyster Bay will continue our
long-standing track record of providing Town residents with the very best in recreational services. Here’s to having
a fun and healthy summer.
Sincerely,
Town Supervisor
JOHN VENDITTO

GAP - Group Activities Program
GAP is a Town-sponsored program, partially funded by the New York State Office for People with Developmental
Disabilities, Family Support Services and the New York State Office of Children and Family Support Services.
Founded in 1967, it operates under the auspices of the Department of Community & Youth Services as part of the
Division of Handicapped Services. The day camp operates under permit from the Nassau County Health Department.
Summer Day Camp
The GAP Summer Day Camp is a social recreation
program for Town residents 5-21 years old who are
developmentally disabled, learning disabled, mentally
challenged, and autistic.
Held Monday through Friday, starting July 7th and
ending on August 15th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at
Syosset-Woodbury and Marjorie R. Post Community
Parks. A two-week vacation day program for working
adults over 21 years of age is also available.
Summer Evening Programs
For ages 16 and older, Tuesday and Thursday evening
programs will commence July 8th and July 10th, and will
end August 12th and August 14th. Programs are from
6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Participants Must Be:
Residents of the Town of Oyster Bay
Diagnosed as developmentally disabled and enrolled
in a special education program
Fully toilet trained
Free of any physical or behavioral problems that
require excessive individual attention or that may be
harmful to themselves or others
Applicants Must Provide:
A completed application signed by a parent or
guardian and a yearly medical and immunization
form provided by the participant’s physician. This
is required for all Summer Day Camp participants. 14
New applicants must attend an intake conference
with the GAP Director, who will explain the program,
answer any questions, determine if GAP is appropriate
for the child and explore how GAP can best meet the
child’s needs.
Organized recreational activities are varied and
include arts & crafts, swimming, sports, group games,
music, weekly trips and more.
GAP’s focus is “group activity.” Participants are
encouraged to become comfortable interacting with
peers. We endeavor to help developmentally disabled
participants improve social skills and increase their
possibilities for positive socialization. Many GAP
participants have formed friendships that extend
beyond the program.
GAP provides approximately a one-to-four ratio of
staff (Activities Specialists and Recreation Aides) to
participants. Activities Specialists are professionals
who have been approved by Civil Service, with a
minimum of a bachelor’s degree and approximately
one year of paid experience with developmentally
disabled persons. Recreation Aides are most often
high school or college students who are pursuing
careers in the human service fields.
Participants are divided into small groups based on
age, type of disability and interests. Every effort is
made to group each child with others who have similar
capabilities and interests. For additional information and applications,
please call the GAP office at 797-7947.
