Welcome to Sibu!
I wish to extend a warm welcome to all of you who plan to visit the riverine town of Sibu. Whether for a short day trip or
preferably longer stay, Sibu promises an exciting experience of colours, sights and sounds. If eco-cultural adventure is what
you intend to include in your travel menu, I welcome you also to venture beyond Sibu and experience the richness of the
traditional Iban culture and nature’s treasure trove.
Strategically located at the confluence of the Rajang and Igan Rivers Sibu is the administrative capital of the Sibu division
and it also serves as the communication and transportation hub of the central region which is one of the most dynamic
growth areas in Sarawak.
Sometimes referred to as the Swan town as it adopts the bird of the same name as its mascot, Sibu is steeped in the colourful
history of the early Foochow immigrants who arrived and settled here at the turn of the 20th century led by their Christian
missionary leader Rev Wong Nai Siong in search of a better life.
Sibu owes much of its growth and prosperity to the mighty Rajang, which is the longest river in Sarawak. On its banks,
too, other smaller towns like Kapit, Belaga, Song, Kanowit, Bintangor and Sarikei thrive. The Rajang River rises in the Hose
mountain range that separates Kalimantan from Sarawak and flows swiftly down a rugged terrain before meandering
through a largely unspoiled Iban heartland of farmlands, forests and miles of alluvial plains.
Visitors making the upriver trip from Sibu will be able to visit longhouses that dot the river banks and witness some of the
rich Iban tradition and cultural practices in addition to taking in the vast expanse and serenity of the lush tropical forest.
Rich in natural resources and other growth potential, the central region is earmarked to be a major economic and industrial
development hub with billions of ringgit of foreign investments expected to pour in within the next 5 to 10 years.
Located at the estuary of the Rajang and can be reached by a two-hour boat ride from Sibu, Tanjong Manis is a well-planned
industrial township with a deep sea port which caters for large ocean-going cargo ships and fishing trawlers. If you are
travelling to Tanjong Manis, you must make it a point to stop over at Sarikei and sample its juicy pineapple, which the town
is renowned for. Located along the narrow coastal belt are Mukah, Oya, Daro and Matu which are inhabited predominantly
by Melanau and are known for their traditional handicraft .
Sarawak is celebrating its 45th anniversary of independence within Malaysia this year and a host of activities and events have
been planned to make it a special occasion for everyone here.
The highlight of the year-long celebration will be in August and will showcase a grand display of the unity and harmony
of Sarawak’s multi-racial population.
In a land that is blessed with the richness of nature and culture, Sarawak is the epitome of the diversity of these attractions
and has a lot to offer to make your visit a memorable one.

Riverine town of adventure and splendour
Welcome to Sibu! This riverine town, along the nation’s
longest river, the Rajang, is also the largest and busiest port
here for trips further up the river and into another world
of adventure. A gateway to the heart of the state, Sibu
naturally excels as host for travellers with luxurious hotels,
choices of food, entertainment and cultural extravaganza as
the confluence point of the rich ethnic diversity of Sarawak.
Fast express boats ply the river to the interior regions and the
boat terminal, in the heart of the town, sits just next to the
100-year old Tua Pek Kong temple, which is well preserved
and revered by worshippers. Adjacent
to it is the unmistakable pagoda,
known as the Goddess of Mercy
pagoda, seven storey high and visible
from almost any part of the town,
is an ideal spot to catch a bird’s eye
view of the town.
Historically the Rajang River was much
feared for its band of warrior tribes
from the interior making forays to the
settlements along the coastal areas
which prompted the White Rajahs’
construction of forts at strategic
points to counter these raiding parties. Sibu grew from this
protection and influx of Chinese immigrants who began
cultivation of agricultural products like pepper and rubber
for export before the emergence of timber trade that
propelled Sibu into a major economic hub for the region.
The town has not looked back since, becoming the main
administrative centre with vibrant modern architecture
surrounded by vast stretches of greens at the confluence of
the mighty Rajang and Igan Rivers.
Incidentally, the town’s mascot, the majestic swan, as seen
in three strategic places (Gateway, Esplanade and Town

Square) was chosen for its historical significance, as told in
folklores. When the Chinese immigrants came and saw the
Melanaus with their sago culture, the difficulty of pronouncing
sago became shortened to ‘go,’ in Hokkien Chinese meaning
swan, the term used for the place. Another version told of
how after a great famine, swans were seen flying over the
area and ushering a new beginning for the farming
communities and hence their importance and significance.
According to Chinese historical recordings, the Rajang River
was often referred to as Swan River and hence the
appropriateness of the swan as the
town’s mascot.
Take a stroll through the town and
take in the warmth and hospitality
of the ever-smiling folks who call this
place home. Enjoy breakfast along the
numerous mini coffee shops tucked in
between the rows of buildings that
formed part of the old town and sample
fresh baked ‘kom pia’ (Foochow styled
bagel), sizzling hot ‘you char kuey’
(deep fried Chinese donut) or the local
favourite, ‘kam pua’ noodles which is
found just about every where. Your walk will eventually lead
you to the Sibu Town Square, the hub for activities of
the town, from the annual Borneo Cultural Festival to
entertainment and shows, mini sports arena to state and
national events. Located just a stone’s throw away from
the Rajang River and with the imposing Wisma Sanyan,
the town’s tallest building in the background, the Town
Square is the ideal spot for relaxation as well as to take in the
splendour of the town. Make a point to visit the Sibu Trade
and Exhibition Centre when in town as this is the state’s
largest and latest centre of its kind. Centrally located, its
3,200 square metres hall also has a food court inside and can
cater for all types of events with ease.

unique for its display of historical artifacts used in the former
hospital. It is sited at the same place where the original
hospital once stood.

Home of beautiful parks,
gateway to heart of Sarawak
One of the first things that visitors will notice in Sibu are the
beautiful gardens and parks within the town – from pocket
corridor garden to open field and children’s playground
to lake garden, there is something for everyone. Wellmaintained and popular, these 18 gardens and parks have
become popular places for locals and visitors alike to relax
and enjoy the surroundings teeming with lush green and
serene water features. The gem among these is surely Bukit
Aup Jubilee Park, a 24-acre splendour and winner of
numerous national awards as well as home for the popular
annual Bukit Aup Jubilee Run that attracts thousands of
participants.
Closer to the town centre, the Town Square (Sarawak’s
largest) and Sibu Gateway are must-visit-places of the town
and venue for host of activities around the year. For those
who love water features, the Lake Garden is the ideal
location with its vast stretches of water, footpaths, habitatisland and jetty among others. Equally pleasing is Sungai
Merah Heritage Walk where the river has been declared
a Heritage River while the Rajang Esplanade gives visitors
the best view of the mighty river flowing gently to the sea.
Apart from these, the other scenic venues are the Wong
Nai Siong Square, Hing Hua Garden, Rajang Traffic
Garden, Friendship Memorial Park, Kutien Garden, Hui
Ning Garden, Su Kuok Garden, Mist Garden, Chiang
Chuan Garden, Old SMC Park, Hii Garden and Taman
Harmoni.
After making the rounds of these places, it is time to explore
further up the river, into the heart of Sarawak! Kanowit
is the next nearest town from Sibu upriver, featuring Fort
Emma, a 19th century wooden fort built during the Brooke
rule. Song is about two hours further up, a town for
side trips along the Katibas and Bangkit Rivers to Iban
longhouses. Kapit evokes senses of traditions with its
rich history and the main jump off point for numerous
longhouses along the tributaries of Baleh and Rajang. Most
prominent building here for tourists is Fort Sylvia, now a
mini-musuem for handicrafts and artifacts from by-gone
era. Kapit is also the main administrative and commercial
centre in this interior heart of Sarawak as well as the venue
for the annual Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari, which traditionally
attracts huge participation from local and foreign teams.
For the more adventurous, the Pelagus Resort with its wild
rapids is a thrill and the further reach of the river is Belaga, a
town mainly made up of Orang Ulus.
Other major towns that provide interesting side visits from
Sibu are Sarikei, Mukah, Bintangor, Daro and Tanjong
Manis, each distinct and special on their own. It is advisable
to set aside enough time for these places, including staying
overnight to experience life in this central zone of Sarawak.

The best times to visit Sibu are during the festive celebrations
of Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Gawai and Christmas to
experience the happy exchange of greetings and sharing of
traditional food in the ‘Open House’ custom of celebration
where everyone is welcomed to visit friends and neighbours
who are celebrating these occasions. While it is quite
common to visit Chinese and Muslim friends in town for the
Chinese New Year, Christmas and Raya, Gawai celebrations
have to be experienced in the traditional longhouses of the
Ibans. Here, the never-ending rituals of eating and drinking
can last the whole day and into the night with music,
dances and talks between friends, relatives and neighbours

Cultural Festival
An annual event for Sibu, it is an ideal opportunity to see,
first hand and close up, the various ethnic groups and
their cultures in a single location – the Town Square. An
extraordinary event held during the entire first week of July,
visitors get to mingle with the performers and sample their
dances and songs, games and learn unique aspects of their
cultures. Theme ‘Beauty in Ethnic Diversity’, the Festival in
its seventh year running, is unique and only one of its kind
in the state, drawing visitors from far and near to sample
this gathering of multi-ethnic cultures in a convenient and
conducive location.

and guests are especially treated well. An important
reminder is to ensure that you have set aside a few days for
the trip as some can completely forget about the time once
the celebrations started!
At the Dewan Suarah there is also a mini museum where
these different ethnic groups are featured, tracing their
history, traditions and cultures of past and reminder of the
rich heritage that is still very much alive today. It is the ideal
place to get acquainted with the rise of the town and its
people, providing valuable pointers for understanding of the
riverine town that aspires to become a city soon.
As like previous years, three main corners will be
dedicated to the major groups of Dayaks, Malays/
Melanaus and Chinese with their own array of
traditions and cultures being on display for the
week. On the last three days of the festival, all
the groups will converge onto the main stage in
a single performance, which is representative of
the close harmony of the different races living
here in Sarawak!
There are dance and songs performances nightly
during the festival for people to enjoy and
appreciate the different ethnic cultures and
traditions of Sarawak. It is difficult and also
expensive to visit all the different places where
the performers come from in Sarawak and so
this is the opportune time to see them and learn
about them. As occupancy rate will be high during
this time, make your bookings early then sit back
and be entertained nightly by the colourfully clad
and graceful dancers. In conjunction with the
festival, the Borneo Cultural Trade and Expo is
also held during the entire week, giving visitors
opportunity to browse through the numerous
types of trades and other services on display.

This is Sarawak largest market of its kind and certainly
a paradise of exotic choices when it comes to local
varieties of food. Located just next to the main express
boats terminal, it has everything you want in a clean,
pleasant and attractive surrounding. There is no shortage
of strange and interesting local fruits and vegetables
brought in daily by native women plying their products
next to daily necessities of chicken, meat, fish and local
vegetables and other dry goods. You will find beautiful
orchids on display next to popular seasonal local and
imported varieties of fruits and for the food connoisseurs,
live fish and poultry are for your picking daily too.
When the shopping is done, there is always the top
floor of the market to rest tired feet where coffee
shops selling varieties of food abound. Try out the
nasi lemak and curries of the Malay stalls for a taste
of these hot and spicy choices or you can opt for the
more traditional Chinese styled cooking of noodles
and rice with wide range of cooked food. Other than
food, you can also get clothing, shoes and varieties of
merchandise for your convenience. You just cannot say
you have been to Sibu without making a tour of this
paradise for local food and varieties of goods under
one roof!

A taste of Sibu
Every seasoned traveller will always
‘hunt’ for a taste of local food
wherever he/she may be and when
in Sibu, you are certainly spoilt for
choice! There is something from
breakfast to lunch and dinner as well
as for supper and snacks in between
meals. Food prices here too are
among the lowest in Sarawak and
do not be surprised by the size of the
servings too as some are really huge
and overwhelming to the first time
visitor.
For breakfast, other than the “kam pua”
mee, whereby the notable stall is at
Sing Ming Kee Café, Deshop Road
or Siong Kee Stall, that everyone in
Sibu likes, you can try the freshly baked
“kom pia”, a flour based doughnut
Foochow style. Usually served piping
hot with marinated minced pork in
the centre, it goes well with that early
morning coffee or tea. A recommended

outlet, to buy the tastiest “kom pia”
is at Ah Hua stall, located on the
1st floor of Sibu Central Market.
Sibu folks are in agreement that the
coffee served at Chung Seng café
in Sungei Merah is one of the best
in the town so that may be the place
for your next breakfast location.
Just before lunch, try to allocate a
little space for the Sarawak laksa
of Zhou Chai at the Mas corner in
kampong Dato. It is said that this is
one laksa place that visitors should
not miss. However, if hot things are not
your favourites, there is the “dian
bian hu”, a mixture of rice noodles
with assortment of mushrooms, and
other spices in a huge bowl of hot
cuttlefish/fishballs soup. The place
for this tasty and nourishing dish that
is a favourite here is the Butterfly Park
market. Prawn Mee at Ming Kwong
Bank Road is another interesting
local favourites, which could be
something of your fancy as it’s a mild
spicy mee soup dish. For Muslim
travellers, the eatery behind the old
mosque has “roti canai” and “tosai”
which are famous and tasty too.
You just cannot leave Sibu without
trying the “mee sua” cooked with
black chicken. Xiao Hua Café at
Lane 2 Lanang is reputed to be one
of the better places for this dish.
Made from flour and sun dried,
the fine noodles are very smooth
when cooked in chicken broth,
usually served with a tinge of red
Chinese wine. Western style food are
everywhere in the town and so those
should not be a problem to locate if
you prefer them or else check them
out at the hotels. For the exact

refer to any local resident or the
hotel receptionist.

Towns
of
the
Central
Region
Sibu is the best transit point for
many of the upriver trips into
Sarawak’s central region and interior,
a vast area of natural beauty and
unique people of different cultures
and traditions. Most trips are by the
fast express boats, aerodynamic in
shape and boasting of air-conditioned
comforts as you ride the waves to
places like Kapit, Song, Kanowit,
Matu, Daro or Tanjong Manis,
Sarawak’s latest fishing port and
centre for industrial development.
By roads, places like Sarikei, Bintagor
and Mukah can be easily reached in
the comfort of the express buses or a
private vehicle.

Sarikei is often known as Sarawak’s
premier pineapple town as the fruit
from here is both sweet and juicy. It
is also the state’s largest producer of
pepper as the agricultural hinterland is
bountiful and rich in fruits production.
A major transit point along the
Pan-Borneo highway, this town
is also well known for its array of
fresh fish and sea produce while
the Chinese people believe that the
herbal package of ‘pak cheng’ (8
treasures) produced here is the best
for new mothers during the period of
recuperation.

Tanjong Manis is also served by an airport and is set to be the premier port in
the central region for timber and marine food processing. A new township, this
well planned and strategic location just inside the river mouth, is generating
keen interest for different types of industrial activities with incentives from the
government and will eventually be the main ship building centre of the state. Its
rapid growth is matched by the increasing number of people settling into the area
which is also frequented by foreign vessels for supplies and essentials.
Bintangor is another agricultural town
and famous for its oranges which are
green and sweet. Located along the
river’s bank, this small town is ideal for
quiet walks and peace of mind with its
slow pace lifestyle.
Mukah is a coastal town well known for its annual Kaul festival, the Melanau
people’s celebration of a bountiful year for fishing and giving thanks. This is
also Sarawak’s sago town as the commodity is most abundant here with
processing into sago flour, pellets and other forms to produce things like
Tebaloi, a sago cracker that is a must-buy when in Mukah. Visitors can come
in by air or drive from Sibu and experience the culture of this seafaring people
and stay in a unique Melanau longhouse, the Lamin Dana which serves authentic
traditional food and display of culture.

Places of worship
Masland Methodist Church
Located along Jalan Pulau, this is one of the oldest churches here,
reputed to be about a hundred years old. It can accommodate about
500 members at any one session and is within easy access right in
the town area and a stone’s throw away from the iconic Sanyan
building. The distinctive aspect of the church is its front facade of
a high, steep point which gives it a traditional look. The building
though is anything but old, especially its interior! There is a modern
stage-like pulpit with a grand piano, modern pews and a mezzanine
floor at the back portion to accommodate more worshippers. The
modern interior and air-conditioned hall naturally makes this one of
the most popular places for marriages.

Tua Pek Kong TEMPLE
Built in 1897 by immigrant Chinese workers, this temple
overlooking the mighty Rajang River commands an outstanding
position with the dominating Pagoda in the background.
Located on Jalan Temple, this famous landmark is a centre for

preserved Chinese temples in Sibu. At the entrance on the
Temple, are praying tables, complete with huge joss sticks,
burning all day and night during certain times of the year.
Within its premises, a modern garden featuring different
animal statutes and figurines are constructed. The place is
now a popular location for tired souls to relax and unwind
while reflecting on life’s ups and downs.
An-Nur Mosque
Often referred to as the Sibu mosque, it is located at
Jalan Ramli Amit, near to both the federal and state
complexes along the main road. Its golden dome can
be seen from afar and is also within easy reach for the
faithful whose kampongs are located not too far along
Jalan Kampung Datu. With fully carpeted interiors and
air-conditioned hall, worshippers find the sacred mosque a
cool and pleasant place to be in. Accommodating
congregations anywhere between 1,000 to 3,000
people, the An-Nur Mosque is one of the biggest in
Sarawak. A huge Banyan tree in front of the road along
the open space gives a soothing feel to the mosque.

However, SSMC is more than people and facilities; it’s
motto of “Quality Service and Quality Care” is the core
of its operations which seeks feedbacks from patients
and their family members on the many facets of the centre

fact, SSMC has a separate customer service and public

It’s jazz time again in Miri and the date is May 9-10,
2008 at the Parkcity Everly Hotel in this Resort City on
the northern fringe of Sarawak! Following the huge
success of the event over the past two years, Sarawak
Tourism Board (STB) has once again planned the Miri
International Jazz Festival 2008 (MIJF 2008) with more
varieties in jazz genre, to spice up the event and certainly
a few other surprises for jazz lovers.
Promised to be another signature attraction for Miri’s
tourism calendar, MIJF 2008 will be liven up by renowned
jazz performers from Australia, Philippines, Korea,
Cuba, Japan, Holland, USA, France, UK and Canada.
Nearer to home, we will see performances from Sarawak
and Sabah, taking centre stage among the foreign
performers. Their genre of jazz include blues and fusion
jazz with a tinge of Latin, Caribbean and oriental music.

Sarawak is blessed with vast area of
land but limited population spread over
the whole state, with more densely
populated coastal zones and sparsely
populated interior and highland areas.
Due to these disparities and distances
between population centres, often
government’s development policies
and good intentions for the people do
not reach the intended people in the
rural areas. AZAM (Angkatan Zaman
Mansang) was set up in 1983 as
a non-profit, non-government
organisation to assist in disseminating
government’s policies to rural
communities towards the advancement
of Sarawak’s society.
In the early 80s and 90s, the main
means of communicating with many
rural communities were radio and
telephone where lines were available;
roads to these remote places were
hazardous and journeys long while
river boat ride was time-consuming
and tiring. Against these backdrop,
AZAM managed to work closely
with relevant government and non
government agencies in bringing
about greater understanding of policies
and social change in rural areas
while its strategies have continued
to evolve with the changing times.
Today, AZAM is recognised as a
leading facilitator of communication
for rural communities through
workshops, seminars and dialogues
while working closely with print and
electronic media organisations in the
state.
AZAM also recognises the importance of
women in communicating information
and ideas in rural communities and
families and hence engage them in
many of its programmes. More recently,
the AZAM Young Communicators
Club (AYCC) programme has been
active in promoting the spirit of
leadership, confidence and maturity
especially among youths in both rural
and semi-urban areas. In working with
the international community, AZAM
is actively engaged in promoting
the United Nation’s Education for
Sustainable Development (ESD)
programmes in Malaysia which aims
to bring about sustainable development
policies around the world.
As part of its upcoming 25th Anniversary
celebration, AZAM is planning a
number of programmes to mark the
occasion, including seminars, road
show and the launching of a book in
the course of the year. For effective
and excellent partnership in promoting
development strategies and plans in
Sarawak, AZAM is the ideal organisation

Sarawak is located in one of the world’s
mega biodiverse region. Naturally its
biodiversity wealth should be
systematically researched in a modern
and technologically advanced manner.
Hence the setting up of the Sarawak
Biodiversity Centre (SBC) at Semengoh,
just outside the city with a host
of well-equipped and specialised
laboratories supplemented by
personnel in various fields. In addition
to the ongoing work at the centre,
there are also collaborations with
research institutions and biotech
companies within and outside the
country for discovery and development
of products with commercial potential.
One of the core activities of SBC is to
conduct bioprospecting on Sarawak’s

indigenous biodiversity which may
lead to development of pharmaceutical,
cosmeceuticals and herbal therapies for
healthcare, as well as other products
including essential oils, biopesticides
and commercial dyes. Screening for
anti cancer, anti fungal, anti bacterial,
anti protease, anti inflammatory
compounds and immunomodulatory
proteins are carried out here too. The
centre is also compiling a biodiversity
database for the state while networking
with organisations of similar interests
around the world.
Facilitating the documentation of
Traditional Knowledge of the local
communities’ use of biodiversity is
also one of SBC’s core functions. With
more than 30 indigenous groups in

the state, there is a wealth of such
knowledge, which needs to be
documented as heritage before they
are lost in the fast changing world.
Furthermore, modern society is
clamoring for more natural products
to address hosts of ailments with the
recognition that these products are

Sarawak’s indigenous plants for
conservation and appreciation at its
premises while also actively promoting
awareness among the people.

Sarawak Museums
Take nostalgic trips back in time to the by-gone eras of early history Museums hold a special place in Sarawak as both historical sites and preservation of artifacts from by-gone eras. Often these
age-old buildings convey stories of their own, each unique and special to the given location. Where possible, visitors should
make it a point to visit as many of the 12 listed museums in the state as possible, which stretches from the capital city Kuching

The Sarawak Museum
- Amongst the oldest
in South East Asia, this impressive Victorian inspired
architectural building was originally completed in 1891 and
extended to its present form in 1911. Located right in the
heart of the city, it is now better known as the Ethnology
Museum to showcase the different cultures of the
multi-ethnic and multi-culture peoples of Sarawak with
models, artifacts and photos to portray the vanishing
traditions and customs of these people.
Dewan Tun Abdul Razak and the Islamic
Museum - The Dewan is the primary site for display of
exhibitions by the Sarawak Museum, which is just across
the road. The Islamic Museum has seven galleries to depict
the splendour and beauty of Islamic civilisation and is within
walking distance from the Dewan. The Islamic museum was
converted from its original role of Kolej James Brooke or
Maderasah Melayu but the main architecture of the building
has been retained due to its uniqueness.
The Art Museum and Natural History
Museum - Both of these museums are located next to
each other, adjacent to the Sarawak Museum and were
formerly buildings used for archive and administrative
purposes of the Museum department of Sarawak. Comprising
mainly paintings from the Brooke period to present day, the
Art Museum gives visitors the chance to see rare paintings

costumes. The building or Pavilion as it is better known,
was completed in 1907 as a medical centre and also located
in the centre of the city. Interesting aspect here is that
visitors get the chance to experience hands-on the loom
and touch exhibits.
Chinese History Museum - The migrant Chinese
people comprising different dialectical groups came to
Sarawak in search of better livelihoods and these historical
archives are now housed in here. Originally the building
constructed in 1912 was a court for the migrants to settle
their disagreement and now it stores artifacts of interest for
young and old. It is located along the famous Kuching
Waterfront.
Niah Archeology Museum - Located at Niah
National Park, this museum brings visitors back 40,000 years
ago to the pre-historic age of cave dwellers with artifacts on
display and also the cultures of people living in the area of the
park. It was completed and opened in 1998.
Baram Regional Museum - A completely rebuilt
museum based on the original Fort House structure
(original fort built in 1898 was burnt down in 1994), this
museum now houses cultural artifacts belonging to various
ethnic groups living in the area of Marudi, the riverine
town where it is located.
Limbang Regional Museum - Visitors get to see
Petroleum Museum - Built in 2005, this museum in
the northern resort city of Miri proudly recollects the glory
days of the petroleum industry and its contribution in
the development of the state with interesting displays
and interactive exhibits.

Local White Rice (Purple Logo)
Fragrant Rice (Pink Logo)
Local White Rice grains are long rice with a minimum
size of 6.2mm with the composition of broken rice
available in the market is 5%, 10% and 15%. Rice that
contains a high percentage of broken rice is cheaper in
price. This rice has an average content of amylose with only 21.4%,
producing pattering and non-sticky texture. In terms of quality and
taste, this type of rice is just the same as super white rice imported
from neighbouring countries. Local white rice is usually used for
cooking daily meals and suitable for cooking nasi lemak, ketupat
nasi, fried rice and mixed rice.
Fragrant Rice is aromatic rice with a natural fragrance.
Usually long (about 7mm) and cylindrical in shape,
it has a tender texture. Fragrant Rice has low to
intermediate amylose content, 13-25%, meaning it is
rather glutinous. Intermediate amylose rice cooks moist and a bit
waxy. However, this type of rice may harden and lose its aroma
with time. Fragrant Rice is a favourite choice with the Chinese
community. It is well-served as nasi ayam and also commonly
used for cooking daily home meals.
Imported White Rice (Blue Logo)
Imported White Rice is also long grain white rice
imported from neighbouring countries. It shares the
same texture, taste and characteristics of the Local
White Rice. This rice also served in daily meals and is
suitable for cooking nasi lemak or fried rice.
Specialty Rice (Orange Logo)
Many types of Specialty Rice are made available
by PILIHAN BERNAS. Here, we look at four
favourites:
Basmati Rice Glutinous Rice
Basmati rice that is available in the market
is imported from India and Pakistan. The
grain’s minimum length is about 7mm or
more; it is white in colour which indicates
good quality rice. The amylose content
in Basmati is high, about 24.1% and it
expands to two times its original length
after cooking. Basmati rice is suitable for
cooking flavoured rice like nasi briyani,
nasi tomato, nasi minyak and etc. Ponni
Herbal Rice
Ponni herbal rice is an organic rice which
is low in carbohydrate and high in protein.
This rice is suitable for a low calorie diet.
Glutinous rice is usually soft and sticky
when cooked because it contains 1020% low amylose. This rice has an
oblong shape, pearlised and not
translucent at all and it is small in
size with a minimal length of 4mm.
Glutinous rice is used in making
traditional delicacies such as ketupat
pulut, lemang and others.
Brown Rice
Brown rice has low Glycaemic Index
and since it still has the bran intact,
it is a much better source of fibre.
Fibre also has a healthy effect on our
cholesterol levels and may help to reduce
the risk of cardiovascular disease. This rice is
suitable for a low calorie diet.

Kubah National Park
After breakfast, a trip to Kubah National Park, just on
the out-skirt of the city, is a pleasant experience as it
houses one of the best collections of palms and native

the park has four main trails which vary in length of
about two to six hours and covering a diverse range of
picturesque settings, including a majestic waterfall. This
park is also next to the Matang Wildlife centre, a favourite
place for children as a number of wild animals can be
seen here, including the iconic species of Sarawak like
the hornbill and orang utan.

Semonggoh Wildlife
Centre

Visitors to Sarawak should never miss the chance to
come to this 653-hectare tropical rainforest centre
where semi-wild orang utans often are seen feeding
from a platform. These animals have been released after
rehabilitation and some still come back for feeding
when fruits in the forest are not sufficient while
a number of other orang utans are kept in enclosures
within the centre. There are other animals kept here for
rehabilitation purposes and veterinary care by medical
personnel housed here and other research work being
done too. The centre is an ideal place to get to know
about orang utans and also botanical knowledge as a
garden is maintained to showcase the various plants
used by the indigenous people of Sarawak.

After being in the hospitality industry for 15 years, Datuk Hajjah Raziah
Mahmud-Geneid is now reaping the fruits of her labour. Grit and determination,
especially in wanting to put Mulu on the world tourist map, brought her
closer to the industry.

seem to lose their way.
“Sarawakians are very hospitable
people. It doesn’t matter what race
they belong to, all of them are the
same when it comes to hospitality.
If you go to a village, the people will
not think twice to invite you into
their house for a drink or a meal,”
says Raziah.
Raziah cannot help but recall the
days when she had to accomplish
the task of building the luxurious
Royal Mulu Resort in the interior
of Mulu’s tropical rainforest. She
described the mission as a logistical
nightmare, and when the project
was finally completed in 1992, she
had to deal with the problem of low
occupancy which was attributed to
shortage of flights into Miri. But
her perseverance and persistence
paid off.
In 2001, she succeeded in helping to
put Mulu on the world tourist map
by securing a place for Mulu National
Park on the UNESCO’s World Heritage
List, which was a first for Malaysia.
Indeed, it had brought Sarawak
to the world’s attention. With that
and also the increase of flights and
upgrading of the Miri airport, there
has been a steady increase in the
number of foreign tourists visiting
Mulu in recent years. The magnificent
pinnacles, colossal caves, scenic
beauty, flora and fauna of Mulu are
now showcased to the world.
Prior to the Mulu project, Raziah
had a few companies to her credit.
Unquestionably, it was the unique
beauty of Mulu that first lured Raziah
to the hospitality industry. After the
Royal Mulu Resort, she started the
RIHGA Royal Hotel in Miri, which is
now known as the Marriott Resort
and Spa. Unmistakably, it is her innate
gift in the area of hospitality combined
with her business acumen that
makes her tick. A fine reflection of a
typical Sarawakian whose hospitality
has been described as a mark of
a “true gentleman”, Raziah is not
only charitable towards the cause of
non-governmental organizations or
the needy, but also to foreign tourists
on the street. Some individual tourists
might be taken aback to find a

car stopping by just to offer them a

Needless to say, the wedding was an
elaborate affair with a stupendous
display of Sarawakian ingenuity, and
most noteworthy was how Raziah and
her Lebanese husband Robert Geneid
entertained their guests. They went
from table to table separately at every
opportunity to greet every guest. One
couldn’t agree more with Raziah when
she says, “Sarawak has so much to
offer to its visitors with its rich cultural
heritage and beautiful surroundings.”
She had worked her way to the top
but like a true Sarawakian, she is down
to earth.

Davey lives alone with his father. But the truth is, it isn’t much of a home. When things get so bad,
Davey decides to run away and his big question is, Where? The magical answer is anywhere Davey
wants! Davey discovers he has the power to jump from one place to another. Not just a few feet. But
hundreds, even thousands of miles! And as Davey explores his new power he learns that the world is
literally his for the taking. But there are consequences too, as Davey will learn. His mother who left
him and his abusive father years before, is reunited with Davey only to be killed. As Davey resists the
pull from the CIA he must also battle those who took someone very dear to him. His girlfriend Millie
tries to help him but not even her support can get him out of the mess he has gotten himself into.
Davey seeks the ultimate revenge, only to learn that revenge may not be what he really desires.

Right from the outset, author Susan Chemerai Anding made it clear that artists in and
from Sarawak rarely ever get recognition from their fellow Sarawakians; often these
artists are viewed as those who are in a world of their own as everyone knows that it is
almost impossible to survive as an artist in the state! Incidentally that may also explain
why there is hardly any published material on art or artists around, again, the perception
that it is considered an activity that hardly warrants attention and certainly not one that
most parents would encourage their children to aspire towards.
Sarawak Malay Culture
Traditional Songs, Music and Dance
The CD starts off with a short introduction of the history of the Malays in Sarawak,
tracing their likely origins from Indonesia and intermarrying with other local tribes. It
explained the various legends and stories of former leaders of the community who took
over the leadership of the communities they marry into. Two main types of traditional
song heritage were mentioned, namely Lagu Rakyat and Gendang.

In Women Who Inspire, the author Christina Mamora captures the thoughts and
aspirations of Sarawak women, and has combined narrative with critical prose to
create a palatable literary style and make interesting reading. The second edition
