2015-16 Slogan: Leading to Learn
The 2015-2016 All Administrators' Retreat was held on the beautiful campus of Holly Shelter Middle School.
Principals, Assistant Principals, Directors, NHCS Senior Leadership and NHC Board of Education Members
kicked-off the new school year with 3 days of collaborative and inspirational informational sessions. They heard
presentations from guest speakers and each other, they shared meals together, and they put their heads together
in continued efforts to provide top educational experiences for NHCS students. NHCS Administrators are Leading
to Learn!

Bond
Updates
In November 2014, the voters of New Hanover County approved a $160 million bond referendum for new construction,
additions, renovations and improvements to New Hanover County Schools’ facilities. Since approval of the project plan by
the NHC Board of Education, contracts for design have been awarded and the projects are moving forward.
Laney and Hoggard High schools’ additions and renovations are currently in the pre-design phase. Both schools will be
getting a new 1,600 seat main gymnasium and support facilities. The current gyms will serve as auxiliary gyms. A new
media center will be built at Laney, with the current one made into classrooms. Hoggard’s existing cafeteria and kitchen will
be expanded. Site and infrastructure improvements are also planned at both locations.
The projected timeline for construction at the two schools is June 2016 through August 2017.
*Projects in blue are included in current additions and renovations.
Porters Neck Elementary School
The new northeast elementary school was officially named Porters Neck Elementary School at the September 1, 2015 Board
of Education Meeting.
Ground breaking for the new school is scheduled for November 2015. Substantial completion of the school building project is
projected for February 28, 2017.

Fifty Beginning Teachers attended the beginning teacher orientation August 1113, 2015 at the Board of Education Center. They participated in a Skype session
led by Beverly Ladd, teacher at Pine Valley Elementary, along with other helpful
sessions.
Teachers and principals from Gregory and Williams
Elementary Schools attended a Harvard Project Reads
research project retreat in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Teams from both schools presented adaptions that they
implemented to individualize the initiative to improve
project outcomes for their students.

A Visual Arts Teacher from New Hanover High School, Nicolette
Johnson, helped students explore drawing, painting, mixed media,
ceramics, and film-making as a camp counselor at UNC-Greensboro's
Summer Art Camp. The camp culminated in a gallery showing of
student work in the Gatewood Gallery on July 18th.

Amy Oots, principal at Mary C. Williams Elementary School, was
honored by the Wilmington Rotary as a Paul Harris Fellow recipient.
Paul Harris Fellows are named for their "significant assistance given
for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations
among peoples of the world." The Wilmington Rotary has been a
valuable partner of Williams Elementary for three years, donating
time and literature to the school's Media Center and students.

How to register as a new employee (You can only register by phone)
1. Call the system phone number (910-338-3597).
2. When the system asks for your Access ID-enter your full social security number (unless it begins with any zeroes, drop all
beginning zeroes).
3. When the system asks for your PIN number, you will enter your social security number again (drop all beginning zeroes).
4. The system will then prompt you to voice your name and then record a new six digit pin number. Have that number ready
to enter.
5. Once you register, you can then create an absence using the phone or hang up and log on to the website to create an
absence.
Employees who have registered but have forgotten their PIN Number
1. Log on to the website https://newhanover.eschoolsolutions.com
2. Click the “Trouble Signing In” link.
3. The system will ask for your ID number (social security number-drop all beginning zeroes).
4. You will enter the security letters and then click submit.
5. The system will email your PIN number to you. If you do not get the email, please contact the Substitute helpdesk at 910254-4345.

Planning. His mother Melrose Thomas passed away on July
10, 2015.

Condolences to Jennifer LaGarde (Technology) on the loss of
her mother-in-law, Barbara LaGarde, on June 24, 2015.
Condolences to Charles White (Technology) on the loss of his
mother, Ruth White, on July 19, 2015. Ruth was an employee
of NHCS for 26 years.
Jerri Romblad, former treasurer of Pine Valley, died on
September 7, 2015, after a two year illness with brain
cancer. Jerri worked for NHCS for 26 years. She was the front
desk receptionist and in 2011 became the school's
treasurer. Jerri retired in June due to her illness.
