HAPPY Thank You New Hanover County! from Dr. Markley’s blog post The 2014 school bond passed with 64% of the votes. While I expected the positive results, I was stunned by the overwhelming level of support. I can only say THANK YOU to the citizens of New Hanover County. The margin of victory affirms my belief that most people are pleased with the direction of the district and support what we are doing for our students. This win did not happen in a vacuum. There are a lot of people to thank and acknowledge. First up is the Bond Committee that was co-chaired by Ann David and Dianne Avery. They provided exceptional leadership to a dedicated group of communityminded citizens. This group of volunteers spoke to over 2000 people at over 40 different events. They met with groups of 5 up to 200 and shared their passion for public education. I also want to thank the employees of New Hanover County Schools. They supported the bond by helping to spread the message about our schools and the need for the bond. Educating 26,000 students is a tough job and over 3,000 district employees were instrumental in letting others know about our needs. The school bond coordinators stepped up at each school and were instrumental in sharing information about the bond. The NHCS Public Relations Department, lead by Chief Communications Officer Valita Quattlebaum, kept a steady stream of information flowing about the needs of our schools and the importance of the bond. The district’s Facility Planning Department, lead by Eddie Anderson, did a lot of behind-thescenes work putting together the numbers and facts that were used in the bond informational materials. There were a number of towns and community organizations that endorsed the bond, which I would like to recognize. These include the town of Kure Beach, the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, the Wilmington Regional Association of REALTORS®, the League of Women Voters, the New Hanover County Council of PTAs and the Wrightsville Beach School Foundation. The New Hanover County Board of Education and the Board of County Commissioners also deserve thanks; they recognized the need for a bond and were willing to ask for the largest school bond in New Hanover County history. The boards knew there was a potential tax impact but stepped up to support the need. The end result was one of the largest margins of victory on any school bond in the district’s history. With the approval, the work on implementing the Bond now begins; we have to finalize a construction schedule and get moving on the building projects. I look forward to this process and will keep you posted on the progress. Within just a few short years, we will be cutting the ribbons on new schools. Thank you, New Hanover County, for supporting the district and most of all, supporting our students. 3 Winter 2014 WE NHCS! We would just for you to share your photos with your fellow NHCS employees! Send them to the Public Relations Department with a caption describing the photo. Be sure to look for a new feature called “SHOUT OUT” in this month’s edition. Principals Jakki Jethro, Robin Hamilton, Carole Piner and Tim Dominowski at the National Association of Elementary School Principals Mentoring Conference. A great group of assistant principals attended the Future Ready Leadership Professional Development at the Friday Institute in Raleigh. Codington Elementary’s Relay For Life team, the Cougars Against Cancer, were recognized for their outstanding efforts during the American Cancer Society's 2014 Relay For Life fundraising campaign. The Cougars, led by team captain Jenny LaChapelle, raised $4,439 and were the top team in money raised for NHCS. Reesa Roberts and Gina Prince from New Hanover, along with Alex Loeber from Hoggard, attended the NC Center for the Advancement for Teachers in Cullowhee, NC. They participated in "The Math Behind the Market: Financial Literacy and Mathematical Mastery." 4 Winter 2014 Thank you to everyone who gave in this year’s campaign! A special thank you goes to our United Way Coordinators! Your creativity and enthusiasm in this year’s campaign was inspiring. Together, NHCS raised over $34,000! To view all of the campaign results and photos, click here. Those schools and departments with 100% participation will receive catered Chick-fil-A lunch! The Transportation Department held a chili cook-off and a bake-off to raise money for their campaign. After all the chili and baked goods were tasted and voted on, $165 was raised for the United Way! Overall, they raised $3,386! The Hoggard cafeteria staff were the first department to reach 100% participation in Hoggard's United Way Campaign. Together, Hoggard raised almost $3000! The Finance and Human Resources Departments teamed up and dressed up to raise money for the United Way. On October 31st, they hosted a Hall-U.W.-een costume contest. Fellow staff members paid $1 to cast a vote for their favorite costume. This FUN-raiser collected $186 to go to the U.W. 5 Winter 2014 Ashli Edwards and Amy-Marie Knox were presenters at the Beginning Teacher state level training. They were commended for their professionalism in their presentation and their ability to answer questions from participants. Ashli and Amy-Marie were also featured in the UNCW magazine for their volunteer work. Regional Teacher of the Year, Melissa Gillespie (third from left), attended the Governors Gala. She even took a “selfie” with the Governor himself! 6 New Hanover High School Principal James McAdams is the Wilmington Health Access for Teens (WHAT) 2014 recipient of the Connie Parker Lifetime Achievement Award. Pictured with Mr. McAdams is Steve Bilzi, former school board member and last year's recipient. Congratulations to Claire McFall of Sunset Park, 2014 North Carolina School Social Worker of the Year! Pictured from left to right: Treasa Hyman, Social Worker at Trask Middle; Amy Hand, Social Worker from Ashley High School; Lisa Burriss, NHCS Lead Social Worker; Claire McFall 2014 NC School Social Worker of the Year from Sunset Park; Candy Robbins, Social Worker from Snipes. Winter 2014 Is Homeownership In Your Future? Are you thinking about purchasing a home in the near future but you don’t know how to start? Do you think you cannot purchase a home because you don’t qualify? If this sounds like you, then keep reading! The Wilmington Regional Association of REALTORS® (WRAR) has resources available to help you reach the dream of homeownership! First, WRAR offers Operation - Home Sweet Home, which is a FREE education and outreach program designed to educate the public on the Homeownership Process. Members of our Partners for Affordable Homeownership team hold these free and informative seminars at local employer’s facilities or at the WRAR headquarters during a time and place that YOU choose. Credit counselors, lenders, and REALTORS ® are available at the end of each session to provide one-on-one counseling and direction to interested individuals with no obligation required. The class is less than two hours long and can be scheduled in the afternoon, evening or on a Saturday to meet your needs. Please “click here” to sign up and we will contact you with our next event. The second and most exciting resource that is available for employees of New Hanover County Schools is $2000 in down payment assistance. It is FREE money for those who qualify. Applicants must meet certain income guidelines, have $500 of their own money to put into the transaction, complete a HUD-- approved Homebuyer Education Class (Operation - Home Sweet Home does not qualify)-- which can be done online, and work with a REALTOR® that has been certified as a Workforce Housing Specialist. Visit http://homes4nc.org/downpaymentassistance-program.cfm for more information about the program and find a Workforce Housing Specialist in your area to assist you in your search for a new home. Why rent when you can buy for less! You have heard this saying before, but now more than ever it is true. The rising costs of affordable rentals in the Wilmington area make it difficult for the average citizen to afford a safe and desirable home to rent. Current interest rates allow affordable house payments for buyers to avoid the whole rental market altogether. And despite other rumors you might hear, lenders are still lending money for Americans to purchase homes. Don’t give up this great opportunity to obtain the dream of homeownership! SHOUT OUT: To Board of Education Member Edward B. Higgins, Jr. Esq. for bringing this information about affordable homeownership to our attention. Save the dates! NHCS has expanded the Summer Institute for 2015! The Summer Institute for Instructional Innovation will be held June 23 and 24, 2015 Castle Hayne Elementary School This is a great opportunity for professional growth in all areas. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. The call for presenters for this two-day event will be coming soon. Presenting at this event is a great opportunity to share your leadership and innovative instructional strategies with other professionals. 7 Winter 2014 Robin Hamilton, Principal at Parsley Elementary, and Sabrina HillBlack, Instructional Coach at Virgo Prep, were both Wilma Magazine “Women to Watch” finalists. Pictured: Dr. Hamilton, Valita Quattlebaum, Chief Communications Officer, and Ms. Hill-Black at the Wilma banquet. SHOUT OUT: Howe Pre-K received a grant from the Cape Fear Gardening Club. Howe staff will be developing an outdoor living classroom in our courtyard. It will be named The Patricia Waddell Outdoor Living Classroom, honoring our principal, a living legend with thirty years in education. Raised beds, an herb garden and a butterfly garden as well as bird feeding and watching areas are planned. Thank you to Elisabeth Mead for writing the grant proposal. ~Duane Wehrhan Myrtle Grove Middle School’s Child Nutrition staff has a little fun on Halloween. 8 Ashley Wells of Holly Tree Elementary School was selected as StarNews’ Shore Pick for the Teacher category. Hoggard High Coach Scott Braswell was selected as StarNews’ Shore Pick for the High School Coach category. Winter 2014 Mrs. Debbie Jones, Music Specialist at Mary C. Williams Elementary, received a grant for 30 ukuleles. No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world. Hoggard's Student Council was challenged by New Hanover High School in a food drive to benefit the "Little Red Wagon" program of NC Nourish. The program provides supplemental food assistance to over 200 children each weekend in the New Hanover County School system. Together, the two schools collected over 800 food items, but Hoggard won the challenge so the principal of New Hanover James McAdams was pied in the face. ~The late Robin Williams Howe Pre-K Center was awarded the Latino Book Club’s “Bilingual/Heritage Literacy Book Award” through a proposal written by Elisabeth Mead, ESL teacher. 9 For this rainbow, Sunset Park Elementary School was the “pot of gold.” Photo submitted by Principal Jakki Jethro. Winter 2014 Mary C. Williams teachers had a great time delivering books, supplies and other treats to neighborhood students on October 31st. SHOUT OUT: To the Anderson PTA in reference to a fundraiser that they did with Neuwirth Motors at the Anderson Fall Festival. People only had to take a test drive and the Anderson PTA earned $10 per person-- raising $2,040! The PTA still has the potential to earn more if anyone from the school buys a car from Neuwirth by the end of the year. ~Neil Stewart Johnson Pre-K teacher Ms. Elizabeth Ewing-Murphy was surprised by Z-107.5 who does a daily surprise give away to various people around the area in Wilmington. She received several bags of school supplies for her classroom. 10 Deena Hinnant, Coordinator of Central Division Transportation, won the Z107.5 "Good Deed of Z Day"! Deena was anonymously nominated to receive a "good deed" because of her dedication and hard work in the transporting of NHCS students while simultaneously dealing with a serious fire at her home. Deena was selected and honored by Keeker of Z107.5 at the office and was presented with a $150 Visa gift card. Williams Elementary Staff enjoyed breakfast from the Senior Staff and School Board. Williams won the breakfast prize for the School Spirit Contest at this year's Convocation. Winter 2014 New Hanover County Schools Pre-K program has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the Landfall Foundation. The check was presented to Laurie Kasten, School Social Worker on November 6, 2014. Ms. Kasten wrote the grant to help support the children in Pre-K with health and educational needs. For instance, the grant will help fund for every child to be able to take a book home to read with their family. The children in Pre-K are at a crucial point in their educational, social and physical development, and the grant will help support all these areas with extra funding. Ellen Blackman and her students are proud to be a part of the new STEM program at Laney High School! SHOUT OUT: Mary C. Williams Elementary would like to congratulate the following teachers: Ms. Mandi Parker and Ms. Sukhbir Dhillon for passing their ESL Praxis! Castle Hayne Elementary School received the 2014 Association for Professional Development Schools Exemplary PDS Achievement Award from the UNCW Watson College of Education. 11 Laura Elliott was awarded the Teacher of Excellence Award at the 64th Annual Conference on Exceptional Children. Laura first came to our school district in August of 2001 as a teacher for autistic students. Her performance in this role over the past 13 years has been outstanding and she has earned the respect of students, staff and parents. She not only has been an AU teacher in our system, but she also served for a while as an Autism Liaison until she had the opportunity to go back to the classroom. This has allowed her to continue to be student-focused on the front line everyday helping students. She shows a high quality of expertise and sensitivity in all her roles here at NHCS. Winter 2014 School administrators and members of the Student Services Department at Hoggard High School decorate "College Cookies" as part of a team-building exercise during the 2014 College Application Week. Hundreds of high school seniors take advantage of application fees being waived during this annual event at many private and state institutions across North Carolina. Three NHCS teachers were accepted to speak at the National Association for Multi-Cultural Education (NAME) conference. Pictured: Ashli Edwards of Snipes Academy, Lora Crowley of Eaton Elementary, and Beth Peddle of Howe and Johnson PreK Centers, with other NAME Conference speakers. SHOUT OUT: To Murrayville staff members who earned grants this fall.
