FALL 2014 14 PROJECTS $160 MILLION BENEFITING ALL SCHOOLS INCREASED SAFETY & SECURITY WHAT KIND OF FACILITIES DO WE WANT FOR OUR CHILDREN? Appropriate, modern facilities that support today’s technology are essential for providing students with an education that prepares them with the skills to reach their full potential in a world yet to be imagined. Students currently meet in crowded and inappropriate spaces such as cafeterias, hallways, stages, storage rooms, workrooms and trailers. There are currently 84 trailers in use, with 4 more to be added for the 2014-2015 school year. The total capacity of trailers is equal to three elementary schools. For more information on the Education Bond, visit www.nhcs.net and click on the big, red apple. or Contact the Office of the Superintendent (910) 254-4219 THE COST To finance these projects, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will hold a referendum on November 4th to get permission from the voters to sell $160 million in bonds. The bonds would be repaid over a 20-year period with an average increase of three cents on the property tax rate. To put this in perspective, the tax bill on a $200,000 home would increase approximately $60 per year, or $5 per month, less than the amount many spend each week for coffee. 5 FALL 2014 14 PROJECTS BENEFITING ALL SCHOOLS INCREASED SAFETY AND SECURITY (1) Installation of security camera systems at all schools and admin buildings that do not currently have systems. -Increased cameras at Williston, Ashley, and New Hanover. (2) College Park Elementary School replacement. (3) Blair Elementary School replacement. TO MEET STUDENT GROWTH NHCS is over capacity by approximately 3,500 students in grades K-12. Enrollment has exceeded projections for the past several years, and is expected to grow by another 3,000 students within the next 7 years. (4) New Northeastern Elementary School. (5) Hoggard High School additions and renovations. (6) Laney High School additions and renovations. (7)Wrightsville Beach Elementary additions and renovations. Thursday, October 2 through Friday, October 31 Fundraiser Collection Week Donations due to Public Relations Department by Nov 7th (Give pledge forms and donations to your school/dept coordinator) Monday, November 3 through Friday, November 7 Top Schools Recognized TBA 2013 CAMPAIGN RESULTS MYTH BUSTERS MYTH: United Way keeps donated money to pay their Execs huge salaries. BUSTED: This is a common misconception based on rumors about the salary of Brian Gallagher, the President of United Way Worldwide. United Way of the Cape Fear Area, like every United Way, is an independent and free-standing organization. The dollars we raise here locally, stay here locally. UWCFA donor dollars do not pay Mr. Gallagher’s salary. We work to keep our administrative rate low and properly steward all funds. Thus, UWCFA staff salaries are modest. MYTH: If I only have a small amount to give, it won’t make a difference. BUSTED: UWCFA’s Community Impact Fund allows every donation, regardless of the amount, to be leveraged and applied to address a broad spectrum of needs in the Cape Fear Area. No other giving opportunity allows your gift to go further. 9 Schools and departments with 100% participation during the 2013 campaign earned Fuzzy Peach frozen yogurt served to them by Senior Staff. Pictured, Dr. Holliday serves the staff at Holly Tree Elementary. Alderman, Murrayville, Child Nutrition, Facilities Planning, Testing/Accountability, and Transportation, also earned Fuzzy Peach. FALL 2014 Caroline Courter, a teacher at Gregory Elementary School of Math, Science and Technology, has been chosen to participate in the 2014 - 2015 Science Master Teacher Project. If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery Twelve high school math teachers participated in a 4-day workshop at Meredith College to get ready for the new school year. 10 Virgo's Claudia Stack was featured in the Wilmington Star News for her work in raising funds to pay for a new roof on the former Lee’s Chapel School, a Rosenwald School near Maple Hill in Pender County built in 1923-24. FALL 2014 Ed Somech of Murrayville Elementary was a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. MindUP prepares teachers with the instruction shifts needed to achieve maximum academic performance using common core standards. It also helps prepare children to navigate 21st century challenges. In addition to the full day training, trainers will return to the school site within 3 months to visit classrooms and meet 1:1 with teachers to ensure continuity of the program. A parent component is also included in which trainers meet with community members and parents to discuss the content of the curriculum.
