One of the crucial aspects of sports is character.
John Wooden said, “Ability may get you to
the top, but character keeps you there.” Every
coach and athlete wants to get to the top or
close to it. Coaches and athletes are celebrated
every day for their “top” accomplishments.
But later, many of them fall. Every person has
a “top” they would like to crest and stand tall
upon. We will go to get lengths and extremes
to get there. Often we strive for success;
success in other’s eyes, in our own and in
the world. Typically, we place emphasis on
ability and skill while not giving equal or more
attention to what we are becoming. Character is forged through
time by struggle, challenge, defeat, and victory. It is developed
by the same principle is sports, practice makes per…..permanent.
Question: what permanent aspects do you want for yourself for
life? Discover the aspects and start practicing them. What you plant
(practice) today is what you get later (character) but only more of
the same.

Northern Virginia FCA’s Spring Banquet has come and gone. Over 750 people
made their way to the Sheraton in Tysons Corner to hear the vision, strategy,
and accomplishments of this Sports ministry. Of course, coming to see and
hear Antwaan Randle El of the Washington Redskins and Bobby Jones, former
NBA all-star, was the main point of interest and excitement! Everyone enjoyed
the event. Two big goals of this event were to raise awareness of our growing
ministry and to build financial support to sustain this vital ministry to coaches
and athletes. FCA has an incredible opportunity to influence and reach coaches
and athletes on the professional, collegiate, and high school/middle school
levels. Many individuals and businesses came forward to join and invest in
this great endeavor. We are very thankful for everyone who came and supported us. Next year’s date is Thursday, March 26, 2009, held at the Sheraton.
Mark it on your calendar now. Bring someone with you who isn’t familiar with
this powerful ministry to coaches and athletes.
Come be a part of the MIRACLE! For tickets or for

Navy Game
On Saturday, March 29th, 45 Annandale HS lacrosse players boarded buses borrowed from Immanuel Bible
Church in Springfield, and left for Annapolis to see the Naval Academy’s “Lax” team face off against Georgetown. They were chaperoned by Annandale’s Head Coach Bill Maglisceau, Assistant Coach Ed Holownia, Annandale Youth LaCrosse coach Dave Britton, and driver Don Loos.
This is the 5th year the group has made the trip. This year it was led by John & Mary Katherine Rutherford,
parents of FCA Student Leader and “Lax” player Meredith Rutherford. This year, John is also leading a chapel
for the lacrosse team.
The game was exciting, but heartbreaking (an 11-10 loss in overtime), and afterwards, the group had a Q&A time with two players from Navy, Jordan DiNola & Dan Decker, both are seniors and
involved in FCA at the Academy. This Q&A time was followed by a
talk from Jason Rutherford, 2nd year student at the Academy. The
players also received brochures about OW2P (FCA’s “play drug &
alcohol free” program) and about FCA “Lax” Camp from staff member Scott Hodgson. -Steven Able

FCA Summer Camps
“GET FOCUSED” Power Camp
What is probably the most exciting SPORTS CAMP
for boys and girls ages 8-12? It’s FCA’s Power
Camp. Kids can choose the specific sport they love
and learn basic skills and fundamentals for that
sport. FCA uses qualified and experienced trainers and coaches. Each
day campers will participate in their sport, be part of a Huddle, study
the Bible, and be part of an exciting daily worship time. This year we
will again have a few professional athletes come and talk to the kids
about sports and faith. Steve Fitzhugh, former NFL Denver Bronco,
Brian Pothier from the Washington Capitols are a few pros that will be
there. Spots are filling up quickly. Get your registration in today to
reserve your spot.

FCA Summer Camps are a HUGE Hit
Where do 500 plus high school
and middle school athletes go for some inspiration and perspiration?
They go to FCA’s Summer Sports Camps at Salisbury and Kuntztown
Universities, and Gettysburg for Lacrosse Camp. Some of life’s greatest decisions are made at summer camp. Life commitments are settled
and a greater focus is found. Athletes receive quality training from high
school and college coaches. The food is great and the worship assemblies are awesome. Chapel speakers are very motivating. Join athletes
from all across the eastern metro area. Bring your friends and have an
awesome week of sports Camp. Don’t miss out on this one!

The month of March was for huddles! Many student leaders
attend the Banquet, and speaker training, and several
huddles had extra events. McLean HS FCA hosted a “Free Bake
Sale” where sweets were given away to students. Each item was
individually wrapped, and sealed with a sticker that had a message
about God’s love, or the huddle’s meeting info.
Annandale HS hosted their annual dodgeball night, approximately
80 were in attendance at Immanuel Bible Church. A clear gospel
message was delivered by Immanuel Youth Pastor Tim Pinkard.
Free Chik-Fil-A was provided by Jeff Burke, store operator in
Landmark Mall. Students were in attendance from several schools.
Edison HS hosted their first ever “Human Foosball Tournament.”
About 30 were in attendance. Snacks were provided, FCA resources
given away, and while we enjoyed Z’s Pizza, Steve Able delivered
a brief message about staying in-bounds with God. A few students
from Lee HS and Thomas Jefferson HS also attended.
Several of our middle school huddles are utilizing student
leadership on a higher level. Plans are
already underway for next year’s huddles, as
senior leaders are choosing and grooming
new leaders for next year! Also, there
is a possible huddle beginning at
Langston Hughes MS. Please pray for
this door to be opened by the Lord!
Play by Play
One Way 2 Play What would happen at a public
high school when a faculty member says, “Thank you
Mike (Mahoney) and FCA for bringing in Steve Fitzhugh…Every kid who heard him today will have a better
chance in life, be stronger and more able to stand up against
negative peer influence because of him!!!! We NEED to bring him back
to speak to the 11th & 12th graders!!! UNBELIEVABLY GOOD MESSAGE!”
On April 22, Steve Fitzhugh presented the One Way 2 Play Drug Free
Assembly at Key Middle School and Herndon High School. Well over
1600 kids heard the presentation of living and playing drug, alcohol, and
substance free. Most students made a decision to follow this plan. This
message is critical, timely, and appropriate. Need more information,
log onto: www.Novafca.org/Campus/SchoolAssembly.lsp. If you have
connections to your school and would like to see this OW2P presented at
your school, contact the local FCA office at 703-278-3970.
FCA Washington Wizards Rally Right on the heels of our Spring Banquet, we had another exciting event, the FCA Wizards Rally. On Saturday,
March 15th (right at the beginning of our Fairfax County Public Schools’
spring break), the Wizards hosted the L.A. Clippers. Trailing late in the
game, Antawn Jamison drained 3 free throws to send the game into
overtime, which they won! It was a huge celebration!
But a more important celebration happened after the game. Almost 200
attended the post-game FCA rally. As they sat courtside, Steve Able
began with shout-outs, trivia questions, and other FCA Staff helped with
prize giveaways. Later, we handed out stress balls, FCA brochures, devotionals, and sports-related New Testament Bibles.
Wizards guard Roger Mason (#8) came out for a Q&A time about
FCA’s core values: Integrity, Serving, Teamwork, and Excellence, and
how they applied to him as an NBA player, a Wizard, and in his personal
life as well.

Following, FCA D.C. Area Rep Isaiah Long, delivered a message about
overcoming 3 major obstacles to pursue & connect with God. He used
volunteers from the audience, and it made an impact on many.
To end the rally, we pulled volunteers from the crowd for a game of
“Knockout” in which we gave FCA hats as prizes to the winners. We are
looking forward to hosting 2 rallies next year, and believe the attendance
will be even higher. We would like to thank Wizards Sales Manager Bill
Anderson for all his help in arranging the rally. We look forward to working with you in the future, Bill! -Steven Able
Glusko
May 6, 2007, FCA volunteer and prayer warriors Denny and Diana Glusko were in a very serious car accident while driving home from
Joe Gibbs’ Youth for Tomorrow (YFT), a residential home for at-risk boys
and girls where Denny has faithfully served as Chaplain the past seven
years. In the accident Diana broke her C-2 vertebra and is paralyzed
below the neck.
They are facing some medical care costs that are out of reach for them,
but necessary for Diana’s well-being and care. This is a perfect time
for people like us to step forward and demonstrate “love in action” by
sharing the burden of these expenses. There are a few sources that you
may want to refer to that will provide more information and updates on
Diana and Denny. Visit the Caring Bridge website at www.CaringBridge.

from the Washington Post with the story of Diana and Denny along with
some great photos. Go to www.washingtonpost.com and type “Believing In Miracles” in the search field.

Coaches
corner
“Where were we?” Jean Coder asks as she flips
the pages of the “Heart of a Coach” devotional.
She looks to the group of coaches for help and
David Houston pipes up “I think we left off with
‘Following the Rules’ last time.” Everyone in the
group turns to page 72 and sees that the topic
is “Sore Loser”. A barely audible groan ripples
through the coaches and I notice that many know
what’s in store for this session, another tough
topic that all coaches and athletes must face. One
person begins reading while the rest look up the
scripture passages that go along with the topic.
This is the typical beginning to the West Potomac Coaches Council, led by Jean Coder (Girls
Volleyball & Soccer) and Casey Grubbs (Boys
Wrestling). Usually five other people round out
the group including David Houston (Boys Basketball), Tyrone Strother (Boys Football & Basketball), Denise Oseni (PE Teacher), Ron Simms (FCA
Coaches Rep) and Jerry Frazier (Groveton Baptist
Youth Pastor). It’s a time to talk about life, sports,
family and Christ. It’s about how they as coaches
can exemplify Christ-like character on and off the
field. There is a strong bond between coaches and athletes as they see each other
in the height of victory and in the
pit of defeat. If you would like to
have a Coaches Council or if you
have questions about coaching, please contact our office at
703-278-3970.
CHAPELS
Have you ever been to a sporting event and thought about the thousands of people who are
cheering with you? How many of them know why they were created? Too many fans, parents,
players, and coaches are obsessed with being on the winning team, but not concerned about
being on the eternal winning team…team Jesus Christ. This year, many FCA volunteers have
been spending at least 15 minutes a week facilitating team chapels, which are optional of course.
Chapels give volunteers the opportunity to literally “go to the mission field” and chapels give
the Christian athletes the opportunity to share their walk with Christ with teammates. Chapels
are very common in collegiate and professional sports, but are just now becoming popular in the
High Schools. A few days ago, 14 Chantilly track athletes sat in a circle while munching on crackers and talked about what their perceptions of God. In another chapel, the athletes discussed
why and how they were created in God’s image (Genesis 5:1). FCA chapel volunteers have come
from churches like (Grace Covenant Church, Oakbrook Church, Immanuel Bible Church, The Falls
Church, Fairfax Community Church, Vienna Presbyterian Church, McLean Bible Church, Christian
Fellowship Church, Cedar Run, and Pender United Methodist Church). If you coach a club or community team, do you give your players the opportunity to pray or read some scripture before the
game?---Robbie Gwinn Area Rep.
When he (Jesus) looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were,
like sheep with no shepherd. “What a huge harvest!” he said to his disciples. “How few workers!
On your knees and pray for harvest hands!” (Matthew 9:36)
