DEER PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2012-13 4959 NEW HARTFORD RD, OWENSBORO, KY 270-852-7075 WWW.DCPS.ORG/DPES DEER PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Preparing the students of today for the world of tomorrow... Students/Parents/Guardians: Welcome to Deer Park Elementary School! DPES is a community school dedicated to providing an excellent education for our children. As a faculty and staff, we are ultra-excited to have the privilege of educating YOUR child this school year! The first day of school is an exhilarating new adventure, no matter what grade your child enters. Our favorite event of the school year is cheering at the arrival of our students! We hope our celebration helps make the first day of school an exciting time for students and parents! Deer Park Elementary is a school with a distinctive difference. The academic experience for DPES students is more than can be captured on standardized tests. While our public recognition often acclaims our success on standardized tests, those of us who exist in and create this learning community know what really brings life to Deer Park. The convergence of talented and dedicated faculty, enthusiastic and caring staff, supportive board office of educational specialists, and encouraging and involved parents have created and sustained a unique community of learners, a place where excellence is expected and attained. We all are proud of what has been accomplished and are excited about another year of learning and fun! How can you help? At Deer Park, parents are active participants in the educational process, working with teachers to ensure that each student achieves success. We believe involved parents help students achieve and we want you as our partners! Some possible ways for you to get involved include: asking your child questions about their learning activities, selecting a book at your child’s reading level to read together as a family, or monitoring their academic progress from home using our internet access to Infinite Campus! Additionally, we encourage you to browse our website, our Deer Park Facebook page, and follow us on Twitter. We welcome your thoughts and ideas as we explore using today’s technology to increase communication with our families. As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have regarding your child’s education or school activities. We are looking forward to another great year! Sincerely, Cindy Galloway, Principal ii Contact Us Deer Park Elementary School 4959 New Hatford Rd Owensboro, KY 42303 Phone: 270-852-7270 Fax: 270-852-7280 Cindy Galloway, Principal - [email protected] Chad Alward, Assistant Principal - [email protected] Robin Nalley, Staff Developer - [email protected] Leisha Robbins, Guidance Counselor - [email protected] Misty Boarman, Bookkeeper - [email protected] Amy Sawyer, Secretary - [email protected] F F iii F • CHAPTER 1 VISITORS AND VOLUNTEERS Deer Park Elementary School welcomes you to visit for the purpose to serve as a volunteer helper or to eat with your child for lunch. For the protection of the students and security in the school, it is required that any person entering the building during the school day come directly to the office before going to any other part of the school. All visitors are required to sign in and sign out. A photo ID must be provided by all guests visiting any area of the school beyond the main office. Visitor identification tags must be worn during your stay. Students will not be permitted to leave the building with a visitor unless he/she has been checked out through the school office. Preparing the students of today for the world of tomorrow... Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) You can help secure the kind of education you want for the children of our community by joining the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and taking part in its activities. The Deer Park Elementary School PTO is an integral part of the total school program. PTO meetings, activities, and events will be announced throughout the school year. Volunteers In our school, volunteers are used for a variety of jobs. If you would like to volunteer your services, call the school for information at 852-7270. Kentucky statute (KRS 17.160) requires that DCPS perform a criminal background check on all individuals who request to serve as a volunteer in our schools. This includes anyone who assists students in or out of the classroom, works in close proximity to students, chaperones or supervises school activities or events (including field trips). As of July 1, 2012, the Administrative Office of the Courts is charging a fee of $10. 00 for each background check request submitted. Considering the extensive number of volunteers who are active across our district, as you might expect, this new expense has created an additional financial burden on our district. However, we believe that the involvement of volunteers is a vital component of our success and we are committed to preventing that cost from being a limiting or restrictive factor. For that reason, DCPS will pick up the cost of the background check. However, to help offset that cost to the district, you may donate the cost of the background check ($10.00) if you choose to do so. 5 • CHAPTER 2 STAFF The vision of the staff at Deer Park Elementary is to provide your child with the best education possible. We are committed to making your child’s education a positive experience that will prepare them for the world of tomorrow today. The preparation and experience of our teachers is important to our success. Upon request, our district will provide information about the professional qualifications of your child's teachers and teachers' assistants. Each time a student takes medication, it will be logged in the school health room as a matter of record. We hope to efficiently get students to class and parents to work by following these procedures. Preparing the students of today for the world of tomorrow... Buses begin arriving at 7:00 a.m. and students may have breakfast at that time. There is no supervision provided before 7:00 a.m; thus, students should not report to school before that time. Students not eating breakfast at school or after finishing breakfast in the cafeteria will go to their designated waiting areas. Kindergarten and 1st grade students will go to the media center, 2nd grade students will go to the Spanish room, and 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will go to the gym prior to 7:30. Classrooms open at 7:30 and homerooms walk as a class to their rooms. Students are considered tardy and must be checked in through the office if they are not in their classroom by 7:40. Buses load and unload in the front of the building throughout the day. Pickup, drop off, and parking is not allowed in the bus lane in front of the school. Morning Car Riders A staff member begins car rider duty at 7:20 each morning. Students are dropped off at both sides of the school building. To help the flow of traffic in the parking lot and in the school hallways, primary students (not eating breakfast at school) should be dropped off on the College View side of the building. Intermediate students should be dropped off on the Western Kentucky University side of the building. Only buses use the lanes in front of the school. In order to shorten the time you are sitting in line, we need you to do two things: 1) Please pull all the way up to the teacher who is working the car lines. This allows three to four cars to be in position at one time. If the first car hasn’t pulled completely up, we have children exiting onto the grass. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue, but in rain and snow it leads to children being in school with wet feet or muddy shoes. 2) Please have your child ready to exit the car. Please make sure your child and their belongings such as coats and backpacks are away from the vehicle before pulling away. 34 Afternoon Car Riders Please follow the procedures listed below. Each family signed up as car riders will be issued two vehicle tags. Parents may purchase additional tags in the school office for $2.00 each. 1) Cars are to enter from College View’s lot and line up going up the hill toward the elementary school. Please make sure the car rider tag is visible. Anyone without a car rider tag will be required to park in the front lot and pick up their child from the office. 2) A staff member will walk the car line to check for car rider tags and to list the cars in order of arrival. This list is used to line up students in the correct order so please do not allow a car to cut in front of you in line. We realize this is a polite action, but all cars must enter the line from the College View entrance and stay in that same order. 3) The sidewalk has numbered squares to mark four positions. Please pull up all the way so we can load four cars at a time and still keep students under the covered awning and out of the grass. 4) Any child not picked up by 2:30 will be taken to the office. Parents picking up a student after 2:30 must come into the school office, be listed on the registration card for pick-up, and provide photo identification. Following these guidelines will help us to keep the car riders flowing smoothly. Thank you for your assistance with keeping our students safe. 35 • CHAPTER 11 ATTENDANCE Attendance is vital for academic success. Communication with the school regarding a student’s absence is a parent’s responsibility. All absences are considered unexcused until the school receives information regarding the absence. Parents have three (3) school days to provide the written note to change the absence from unexcused to excused Preparing the students of today for the world of tomorrow... Guidelines for Absences 1.Please call the school (270-852-7270) before 9:00 a.m. when your child is absent. 2.If your child is absent due to a doctor’s appointment, please have the doctor issue an excuse for your child to to deliver to the school office. 3.Parents are encouraged to plan vacations and business trips when school is not in session to avoid unnecessary student absences. This includes days designated as district make up days on the school calendar. If a family trip cannot be scheduled when school is not in session, please contact the principal to discuss the approval process. A student’s attendance record may determine whether approval for the vacation is granted. Make-up Work The teacher shall allow those students who have been absent and excused for make-up by the principal to complete activities directly related to the matter covered in class at the time of absence. The student shall be allowed at least one week for completing the assignment from the date the student returns to school. 37 Truancy Defined Any student who has attained the age of six (6), but has not reached his/her eighteenth (18th) birthday, who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three (3) days or more, or tardy without valid excuse on three (3) days or more, is a truant. Any student enrolled in a public school who has attained the age of eighteen (18) years, but has not reached his/her twenty-first (21st) birthday, who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three (3) or more days, or tardy without valid excuse on three (3) or more days, is a truant. Any student who has been reported as a truant two (2) or more times is a habitual truant. A student who is absent for sixty (60) minutes or less of the regularly scheduled school day is tardy. For the purposes of establishing a student’s status as a truant, a student’s attendance record is cumulative for an entire school year. When students transfer from one Kentucky district to another, attendance information from the previous district shall become part of their official attendance record for that school year. 38 Truancy Procedure When a student accumulates three (3) unexcused absences, the school will inform the Director of Student Services. If a student accumulates four (4) unexcused absences, the Director of Student Services will notify the parent via letter or home visit as a plea to correct the truancy problem. Parents will receive a final notice of impending legal action via a letter or home visit if the student accumulates five (5) unexcused absences. Additional unexcused absences could result in court action for educational neglect against the parents and/or truancy petition being filed against the student. Excused Absences 1. An excused absence or tardiness is one for which work may be made up, such as: 2. Death or severe illness in the pupil's immediate family, 3. Illness of the pupil, 4. Religious holidays and practices, 5. If approved in advance by the Principal, one (1) day for attendance at the Kentucky State Fair, or 6. Documented military leave, 7. Other valid reasons as determined by the Principal, including trips qualifying as educational enhancement opportunities. 39 Doctor’s Excuses Chronic medical conditions that result in excessive absences or require frequent visits to the doctor will require a medical release form signed by the student’s doctor and a school plan of care developed by a school health care review committee. The review committee may include, but not limited to: the principal, assistant principal, school nurse, guidance counselor, district administrative staff, child’s parent, and child’s doctor. A maximum of eight (8) absences or tardies per school year [maximum of four (4) per semester for grades on semester block schedules] may be excused by parent note or parent call-in for illness or other approved absence per District policy. A statement from a medical practitioner, dentist, or county health department official will be required for any additional absences. Any parent notes for illness [maximum of eight (8)] for absences and all medical practitioners’ statements must be submitted to the school attendance secretary within three (3) days of the absence(s) or the absence(s) shall be recorded as unexcused. In cases where students transfer from one school to another during the school year, the student’s excused and unexcused cumulative attendance record will also transfer to the new school. Suspension Suspensions shall be considered unexcused absences for the purpose of makeup work. 40 • CHAPTER 12 BUS TRANSPORTATION Kentucky law governs the behavior of students who ride school buses.
