Up on the Mountain
Last weekend I had the privilege of going on our
parish’s annual women’s retreat up in mountains. The weekend was truly a great blessing for each of the women who
were part of the retreat this year. I have to be honest, being
on the mountain with these women allowed me to really see
the graces our God gives each of us through the outpouring
of the Spirit’s gifts on us.
Throughout the weekend, I had the opportunity to
think of these gifts which all of us receive and how we are
challenged to bear fruit via these gifts. Part of my reflection
was on the fruits we as a parish community produce. In reflecting on this, it brought me joy and happiness, because we
are truly blessed by the generosity of our entire parish. As a
result, we as a community produce fruits to help us all grow
more deeply in love with the God who is love. I thought about
how we at times struggle to find a meeting place for groups
or meetings because of the amount of events we have in our
parish. Often times, it can become annoying trying to find a
meeting place, but then I think, it goes to show that we indeed have “life more abundantly” here in our community.
One of my other reflections over the weekend was
the about the important role that women have in the life our
parish and in each of our lives. Being with the women up on
the mountain gave me a greater insight into the amount of
work women do in all of our lives, allowing me to have a
deeper sense of gratitude for all of our women, especially
during this month of May. During this month, we have to
important celebrations. First, we celebrate Our Lady. It is
the Blessed Virgin Mary’s month. This weekend, we celebrated our annual May Crowning, but we can’t miss the opportunity to continue thanking Mary for her yes to God’s
invitation to become the Mother of the Redeemer. I invite
you to take some time this month and get close to Mary
through prayer and allow her to do what she does best, lead
you to her Beloved Son, the Word made Flesh.
This weekend, we also celebrate Mother’s Day. It is allows us
the opportunity to thank all of our mothers for the gift of life.
Often times Mother’s Day can be sad, because many of our
mothers have gone before us and are no longer with us. Yet,
the sense of gratitude is still there and it’s not to late to give
a gift to our mothers, both living and deceased. I know that I
often ask myself “what can I get for my mom, a new cooking
pot!!!” Then I realize that I am the one who will really most
benefit from it, so I think of something else. As I continue to
grow, especially in my relationship with God, I have come to
realize that the best gift for mom is my prayers.
Hence, I invite you to take some time to pray for your
mother this Mother’s Day, either living or deceased. Here
at St. Francis, we are having our annual Mother’s Day
Novena beginning on Mother’s Day. We will be offering
Mass for each of your mothers. I know no better gift that
we can give our mothers than the gift of prayer, especially
at the Mass. Please use this opportunity to pray for your
mom, especially in thanksgiving for the gift of life they
have given each of us. There are envelopes at all the entrances to the Church to enroll your mother in the novena

Why Do We Celebrate Easter for 50 Days?

Most people think of Easter as a single day. It’s never had
the commercial appeal of Christmas, and because it always
falls on Sunday, most people don’t get an additional day off
from work. But for Catholics, Easter isn’t just a day, it’s a
whole season. The Easter season stretches all the way to
the feast of Pentecost. Lent, which sometimes feels like it’s
stretching on forever, is actually forty days long. Easter,
on the other hand, is all of fifty days long. About these fifty
days theologian Nathan Mitchell writes:
‘The great fifty days of Pentecost are not an unwelcome, unrealistic obligation to “party on,” even if we
don’t feel like it, but an invitation to explore more
deeply “the weather of the heart,” to awaken our
memory of God’s presence and power in our lives, to
look more closely at all the rich and varied textures
of creation.’
One way the church pursues this goal of seeing God present in the world is through the reading of the Acts of the
Apostles. At Masses all through the Easter season, our
usual practice of reading from the Old Testament is replaced be reading from the Acts of the Apostles. These
readings tell the story of the church’s earliest days, and the
beginnings of our faith’s spreading throughout the ancient
world. These stories of heroism, controversies, persecutions and miracles all testify to the continued presence of
the Risen Christ in the world, through the lives of his disciples, and the actions of the Holy Spirit.
All of this should be an encouragement and a sign of hope
for us today. Despite war, violence, personal struggles, and
an under-performing economy, God has not abandoned us,
nor left us to our own devices. The risen savior is still with
us. These 50 days of Easter ask us to reflect on his presence, and—even in the face of danger or fear—to live with
joy.

75th Anniversary: Looking Back
Did you know that . . .
In the early 1900s a small group of Catholics in the
area of Vista invited Franciscan priests from Mission
San Luis Rey to say mass in the home of one of their
group. In time, the group expanded and met at Guajome Park for their weekly masses. They soon rented
space in a local business in Vista and eventually
(1938) purchased the current property - for $900 - that
had a small, former country schoolhouse on it.
After the schoolhouse became a dedicated church (the
current Founders Hall), the Diocese of San Diego incorporated the new church into its authority. This was
in 1940 and St. Francis’s first pastor was Father
Dominic Gallardo from 1940-42, the first of fifteen
pastors to follow. The first baptism at the newly established church was John Francis Kelly on September 8, 1940. The first communion service was on July
13, 1941 for 21 children and conducted by Father R.
McEwan. The first confirmation, on June 27, 1943, for
53 students by Bishop Francis Buddy and the first
parish marriage was celebrated on Christmas Day,
1940, by Father Kenneth Stack for Nicholas Court and
Ruby Keefer. The first person buried from the parish
was Santos Ruiz on February 3, 1941.
Finally, the people of Vista had their own church and
the Catholic community of St. Francis of Assisi Parish
began!

Arriba, en la montaña
El fin de semana pasado, tuve el privilegio de ir al retiro anual
de las mujeres de nuestra parroquia en las montañas. Este fin
de semana fue realmente una gran bendición para cada una de
las mujeres que participaron en el retiro este año. Tengo que
admitir, el estar en la montaña con estas mujeres me permitió
ver claramente las gracias que nuestro Dios da a cada uno de
nosotros a través de la efusión de los dones del Espíritu en
nosotros.
A lo largo del fin de semana, tuve la oportunidad de meditar
sobre estos regalos que todos nosotros recibimos y cómo se
nos desafía a ofrecer los frutos a través de estos dones. Parte
de la reflexión que compartí fué sobre los frutos que nosotros
como comunidad parroquial producimos. Esta reflexión, me
trajo alegría y gozo, porque hemos sido verdaderamente bendecidos por la generosidad de todos los miembros de nuestra
parroquia, y, como resultado, nosotros como comunidad hemos
producido fruto, que por consecuencia, nos ayuda a todos a
enamorarnos más profundamente del Dios que es amor. Me
puse a reflexionar en las innumerables veces que hemos tenido que sobrepasar el problema de tener que encontrar un espacio para que grupos de nuestra comunidad se puedan reunir,
ya que tenemos muchos eventos que pueden causar conflictos
al tratar de adaptar el horario de uso para ellos en nuestra parroquia. Muchas veces, puede llegar a ser molesto tratar de
encontrar un lugar para reunirse, sin embargo, yo creo que esto
representa que realmente tenemos la oportunidad de crecer
espiritualmente y por consecuencia vivir una " vida más abundante" aquí dentro de nuestra comunidad.
Otra de las reflexiones que hice ese fin de semana fue, de cuán
importante es el papel que tienen las mujeres en la vida de
nuestra parroquia y en cada una de nuestras vidas. Pasar este
tiempo con las mujeres de nuestra parroquia en la montaña, me
dio una mayor comprensión sobre la cantidad de trabajo que
hacen las mujeres en la vida de todos y cada uno de nosotros,
esto me permitió renovar el profundo sentido de agradecimiento
por todas las mujeres de nuestra parroquia, especialmente durante este mes de mayo. Durante este mes, tenemos dos celebraciones importantes. En primer lugar, se celebra a nuestra
Madre del Cielo. Es el mes de la Santísima Virgen María. Este
fin de semana, celebramos la Coronación anual de la Virgen
Maria, sin embargo, no podemos perder la oportunidad de seguir dándole gracias a María por haber respondido con un sí a
la invitación de Dios para ser la Madre del Redentor. Los invito
a tomar algunos momentos durante este mes y acercarse a
María a través de la oración y permitir que ella haga lo verdaderamente fue llamada a hacer, llevarnos a su Amado Hijo, el
Verbo hecho Carne.
Este fin de semana, también celebramos el Día de la Madre.
Este día nos da la oportunidad de agradecer a todas nuestras
madres por el don de la vida. A menudo, el Día de la Madre
veces puede ser triste para algunos de nosotros, porque muchas de nuestras madres se han ido antes que nosotros. Sin
embargo, el sentido de la gratitud sigue siendo el mismo y ciertamente no es demasiado tarde para darle un regalo a nuestras
madres, tanto vivas como fallecidas.
Sé que a menudo me pregunto "¿qué puedo hacer por mi
mamá?, ¡una nueva olla!" Pero inmediatamente me doy cuenta
de que el beneficiario de ese regalo realmente sería yo, así que
tengo que pensar en otra opción. A medida que continúo creciendo, sobre todo en mi relación con Dios, me he dado cuenta
de que el mejor regalo para nuestras madres es la oración. Por
lo tanto, les invito a que se tomen el tiempo para orar por su
madre este Día de la Madre, ya sea viva o fallecida. Aquí, en
San Francisco de Asís, estamos celebrando la Novena Anual
para nuestras madres que comienza el Día de la Madre. Vamos
a ofrecer la misa para cada una de sus mamás. No me puedo
imaginar un mejor regalo que le podríamos dar a nuestras madres, que el don de la oración, especialmente durante la Misa.
No pierdan la oportunidad para orar por su madre, especialmente en acción de gracias por el don de la vida que nos han
dado a cada uno de nosotros. Pueden utilizar los sobres que se
encuentran en todas las entradas a la Iglesia para inscribir a su
madre en la novena.

¿Sabía usted que . . .
A principios de 1900 un pequeño grupo de católicos en el área
de Vista invitó a unos sacerdotes franciscanos de la misión de
San Luis Rey a celebrar misa en la casa de uno de los miembros de su grupo. Al pasar del tiempo, el grupo creció y se empezó a reunir en Guajome Park para celebrar sus misas dominicales. Después de un tiempo, comenzaron a alquilar espacio
en un local de negocios en Vista y con el tiempo (en el año
1938) compraron la propiedad actual – por $ 900 - que incluía
una pequeña escuela pública.
Después de que la escuela se convirtió en una parroquia ( en
lo que es ahora Founders Hall), la Diócesis de San Diego incorporo la nueva iglesia bajo su autoridad. Esto fue en 1940, el
primer párroco de San Francisco de Asís fue el padre Dominic
Gallardo 1940-42, el primer de los quince pastores que lo han
seguido. El primer bautismo en la iglesia recién establecida fue
de John Francis Kelly, el 8 de septiembre de 1940. La primer
“Primera Comunión” fue el 13 de julio 1941 para 21 niños y se
llevó a cabo por el padre R. McEwan. La primera confirmación,
fue el 27 de junio de 1943, para 53 estudiantes por el Obispo
Francis Buddy y el primer matrimonio de la parroquia se celebró el día de Navidad de 1940, por el padre Kenneth Stack
para Nicholas Corte y Ruby Keefer. La primera persona enterrada en la parroquia fue Santos Ruiz, el 3 de febrero de 1941.
Finalmente, la gente de Vista tenían su propia Parroquia y comenzaron la comunidad católica de San Francisco de Asís!
