Welcome!
For many people a diploma is just a diploma,
but to others it’s a dream.
Monies raised for the NCCES Foundation go toward
additional programming and ensuring equitable
participation in field trips, sports, and after school
activities for all NCCES students. We appreciate your

Mission
North Central Charter Essential School is a public school
where students are known personally, challenged intellectually and expected to participate actively in their learning.
Guided by the school’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, NCCES seeks to send graduates into the world
who THINK for themselves, CARE about others, and ACT
creatively and responsibly.
Welcome!
I
t is our honor and privilege to welcome you to our school
today. North Central Charter Essential School (NCCES)
was established in 2002 in the Cleghorn neighborhood of
Fitchburg to provide a rigorous, personalized public school of
choice to families in this region (30 cities and towns in North
Central Massachusetts).
Our students represent a wide range of socio-economic, cultural, geographic backgrounds and include students of all learning abilities. There is an almost equal mix of urban, rural and
suburban students in the school, 60% of which come from low
income families.
For many of us in this room today a high school diploma is just
a diploma. To many of our students, it’s a dream. NCCES is
actively raising aspirations in the North Central Massachusetts
region by making college and higher education a reality for all
our students.
Our academic program delivers a highly personalized education
allowing us to meet each student where they are as a learner
so that they realize true academic success. Our amazing staff
creates a safe and supportive environment where students can
explore diversity and embrace each other's differences.
We hope you enjoy your visit to NCCES and encourage you to
ask our volunteers why they choose NCCES.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Davolos

David Rodgers is the Senior Vice President of Commercial Development at Workers Credit Union. NCCES is grateful to Workers Credit
Union for donating Dave’s time and talent to make this event a success.
Mayor Lisa Wong has just begun her third term as mayor of
Fitchburg Massachusetts. The first minority mayor in Fitchburg’s history, she is also the first female Asian American mayor in the history of
the commonwealth.
Since first coming to the city in 2001 as a member of the Fitchburg
Redevelopment Authority, one of her main focuses has been the implementation of urban renewal projects, and it was under her guidance
that the city saw the creation of Riverfront Park. The park offers beautiful green space with walking paths, trees, benches and gardens, and
has become a popular location for community events.
Mayor Wong has made it a priority to rejuvenate the City of Fitchburg
by actively supporting the restoration of the city’s historic mill buildings
and storefronts, and working to create more “walk friendly” places
through “sidewalk trails” and off road river front paths, she has been
able to boost the city’s appeal.
Mayor Lisa Wong continues to lead towards a better and brighter future, with fresh ideas, an open mind, and a passion for the city of
Fitchburg.
Sergeant Glenn Fossa is a 28 year veteran of the Fitchburg Police
Department. He is a lifelong resident of Fitchburg and chose to pursue
a career in policework over television and broadcasting, which is another interest of his.
He is a graduate of Mount Wachusett Community College, University of
Massachusetts/BOSTON, and Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts. He has received specialized training at Harvard Medical School,
Babson College, Pennsylvania State University, University of Delaware,
Texas A&M, and Michigan State University.
Currently assigned to the Office of the Chief, as the Police Departments
community liaison and spokesperson, Glenn serves on the board of
directors at Fitchburg Access Television, and is a member of the
Fitchburg Rotary Club, Rolls Royce Owners Club, Antique Auto Club of
Celebrity Auctioneers
America, and the National Information Officers Association. He is also
an associate member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Sgt. Fossa's family consists of two sons and their mom, celebrating 18
years together, and he enjoys being with his family, attending automobile races, charitable events, and various outdoor activities. Glenn's
interest in the arts and young people pursuing healthy pastimes brings
him here today to support this event!
William ("Bill") Henry Rodgers is an American runner and former
American record holder in the marathon who is best known for his victories in the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon in the
late 1970s. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Rodgers won both
races four times each between 1975 and 1980, twice breaking the
American record at Boston with a time of 2:09:55 in 1975 and a
2:09:27 in 1979. In 1977 he won the Fukuoka Marathon, making him
the only runner ever to hold the championship of all three major marathons at the same time. He made the 1976 U.S. Olympic team and
raced the marathon at the Montreal Olympics in 1976, finishing 40th.
He did not participate in the Olympics in 1980 due to the U.S. boycott
over the invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR.
In 1975 he won the bronze medal at the IAAF World Cross Country
Championships, equaling Tracy Smith's 1966 bronze in the International Cross Country Championships as the highest an American had
ever finished in international cross country competition. Rodgers' most
remarkable year on the road racing circuit came in 1978 when he won
27 of the 30 races he entered, including the Pepsi 10,000 meter nationals (with a new world road 10K best time of 28:36.3), the Falmouth
Road Race, and the Boston & New York marathons. Rodgers is also the
former world record holder for 25 kilometers as he broke Pekka
Paivarinta's world record with a time of 1:14.11.8 on a track in Saratoga, California in 1979.
Track & Field News ranked Rodgers #1 in the world in the marathon in
1975, 1977 and 1979. 28 of the 59 marathons Rodgers ran were run
under 2:15. In all he won 22 marathons in his career.
Rodgers received his B.A. in sociology from Wesleyan University, where
his teammate Amby Burfoot also won the Boston Marathon while still a
student. Rodgers also has an MS in special education from Boston College.
Celebrity Auctioneers
Scott Higgins is in his fifth year at NCCES and will be graduating in
May with the Class of 2012. Scott served two years on the Board of
Trustees from 2008-10, plays for the NCCES lacrosse and field hockey
teams, and performed in this year’s production of A Midsummer Night’s
Dream. He was awarded the Chancellor’s Scholarship of Excellency at
UMass Boston and plans to major in English in the fall. In March, Scott
was named Mr. North Central Six for exhibiting all six of the North Central Six values.
