Mercedes-Benz coach model heralds a new era – with a new engine generation
and sustainable Euro VI technology. Let us tell you about the Travego Edition 1.
Top class technology for a new era. For a long time now,
Mercedes-Benz has been taking a lead role in the development of environment friendly, innovative drive technologies.
With the efficient, high performance BlueTec® engines,
we have succeeded in keeping fuel consumption constant
and significantly reducing harmful emissions. With the new
BlueEfficiency Power technology, Mercedes- Benz is once
again setting new standards. For it already satisfies the
new emission standard two years before implementation of
Euro VI becomes mandatory by law. The Travego Edition 1
is the first vehicle in the entire Mercedes-Benz Buses and
Coaches range in which the Euro VI engine of tomorrow is
available today.

Totally relaxed in the here and now. The Travego Edition 1
is not only more environment friendly, it has also become
even safer and more comfortable. For example, the new
advanced emergency braking system Active Brake Assist 2
(ABA 2), available as an option, can also detect hazards
moving ahead and stationary obstacles. And the newly
developed assistance system ATTENTION ASSIST (AtAs) issues
a prompt when it is time to have a break. This way the driver
is given the best possible support and safety is improved.
Moreover, the driver's workstation has been further optimised. Starting with the cockpit, through the multifunction
steering wheel, steering column and switch to the ignition
lock. Passengers too will be even keener to board a Travego
in the future. Not only because of the attractive design of
the new seats. But rather because the sprung seat cushions,
comfortable armrests and the simple, intuitive operation of
the seats make for maximum comfort on long journeys.

of the competition. With the new generation of BlueEfficiency Power engines,
Mercedes-Benz is continuing the tradition as a pioneer of technology.
The first coach with Euro VI. Specifically developed for
Europe, and tested and proven under the toughest condi­
tions from the polar circle to Southern Spain, the new
Blue Efficiency Power drive technology is now being installed
for the first time in a coach in the Travego Edition 1. As the
first engine in its class, the 6-cylinder in-line OM 471 engine
rated at 350 kW (476 bhp) already meets the new Euro VI
exhaust emission standard two years before it comes into
force. This powerful, efficient, sustainable engine ensures a
significant reduction of nitrogen oxides and particles in the
exhaust gas and makes the Travego Edition 1 the pioneer of
a new environment friendly era.
A milestone in engine development. The new engine generation of with BlueTec® 6 convinces not only with its high
environmental compatibility but also with its high economy.
In spite of the higher demands, we have succeeded in keeping the fuel consumption low as usual. And without any extra
fuel consumption that you might expect with Euro VI – a new
milestone set by Mercedes-Benz. This success is due partly
to the unique X-PULSE injection system with common rail
technology. Beside the low emissions, other top class features due to the combination of SCR technology, on-demand
exhaust gas recirculation and particulate filter, are: the high
dynamic response of the engines thanks to the new turbocharger technology; and the powerful, dynamic three-stage
engine brake. For maximum output, very quiet running and
comfortable driving characteristics. And with extremely long
maintenance intervals of up to 120,000 km, which keeps the
life-cycle costs low.

Your new top performer.
We have worked hard to reduce emissions of the new flagship for your fleet.
What we have not reduced are engine performance, dynamic response and
ride comfort.
Clean performance. What particularly distinguishes
the new generation of engines is the efficient, clean fuel
combustion. It is based on the flexible common rail system
with full electronic control. The use of X-PULSE allows an
exceptionally high maximum injection pressure and precise
control of the entire injection sequence to be achieved.
This produces a smooth increase in pressure, a low fuel
consumption and minimal particulate emissions.
Quietness lies in the power. BlueEfficiency Power stands
not only for maximum efficiency but also for maximum
engine performance and excellent driving dynamics. For the
powerful six cylinder in-line engines already develop their
high power below 1800 rpm. This optimisation of the speed
range lowers consumption and the noise level. For very
quiet running – even when accelerating and at higher road
speeds.

Everything under control. The centre of all the driving pleasure is the engine control module (MCM). As the brain of
the new engine, it interprets the output demand of the driver
via the accelerator pedal position. But not only that: it also
controls and monitors all the engine functions from the start
and rate of injection through to actuation of the dynamic,
three-stage advanced engine brake. With this arrangement
it is therefore possible to achieve very fast and smooth gear
changes and the engine always runs in its optimum range.
Comfortable in all gears. The Travego Edition 1 is also convincing with a new generation of bus transmissions. Beside
excellent economy, the Mercedes-Benz GO 250-8 automated
manual transmission also provides an extremely comfortable
ride with convenient operation via the steering column lever.
The driver only has to set the direction of travel or, in manual
mode, select the right gear – the transmission control system
does the rest. And the best is: the innovative transmission
also helps to save on expensive fuel.
Safety with no compromises.
The bus is seen as one of the safest forms of transport in the world.
The innovations of Mercedes-Benz have played a decisive part in this.
The Travego Edition 1 proves that it is possible to make even an outstanding
­safety concept even better.
The vision of accident-free driving. As a leading manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz Buses and Coaches carries special
responsibility for the safety of passengers, drivers and
road users. That is why ever since Carl Benz invented the
omnibus, Mercedes-Benz has repeatedly done pioneering
work in the advanced development of bus safety. Many of
the innovations that have long been standard today were
launched in a vehicle bearing the Star. With further improvements of the integral safety concept in the Travego Edition 1,
Mercedes-Benz comes another important step nearer to the
vision of accident-free driving.
The standard for comprehensive safety. To thoroughly
implement this safety thinking, the Mercedes-Benz integral
concept covers all phases of automotive safety: from driver
safety through dealing with critical situations to accident
prevention and measures for protecting the occupants in
the event of an accident. The Travego Edition 1 is thus once
more setting the highest standards and is regarded yet again
as one of the safest coaches in the world.

Safety is a spur for innovation.
The end of a tailback that suddenly pops up or the surprise emergency braking
of the vehicle in front-heart-stopping moments for any bus driver. Thanks to
the innovative electronic assistance systems in Travego Edition 1, many of these
dangerous situations can be defused.
Second generation active safety. The first generation
of Active Brake Assist (ABA) successfully contributed to
preventing many accidents. Now with ABA 2, Mercedes-Benz
is once again setting new standards in road safety. This
innovative emergency braking system can now also detect
stationary obstacles in addition to moving hazards: for
example a vehicle at the end of a tailback. The radar system
can spot hazards and help to defuse the situation: ABA 2
automatically initiates partial braking, warns the driver with
an acoustic signal, and brakes the vehicle if the driver fails
to react. Not for nothing was the ABA 2 honoured with the
FuturAuto Award.

Even more guardian angels on journeys. Beside ABA 2,
two more new electronic safety systems ensure that your
coach reaches its destination safely. For instance, the newly
developed assistance system ATTENTION ASSIST (AtAs) gives
the driver early warning of possible tiredness, and issues a
prompt to take a break at the right time. Long distance journeys especially will be even safer. The new ­automatic tyre
pressure monitoring system warns of any deviations in the
correct air pressure. This reduces tyre wear and can prevent
tyre damage. Not least, it can have a positive effect on fuel
consumption and emissions, and improve the driving characteristics. Long since a matter of course are all the other
safety systems in the Travego: Electronic Stability Program
ESP®, Brake Assist System (BAS), Lane Assist (SPA) as well
as Proximity-controlled Cruise Control (ART) and Continuous
Braking Limiter (DBL).
Safety in a new light.
The Travego Edition 1 can be steered safely and comfortably through the traffic.
A first class braking and lighting system on which your driver can depend also
contributes to this.
Fast reaction braking. Speed too high for the current driving
situation? The innovative decompression brake integrated
in the engine control supports fast reaction by the driver.
It responds in less than 150 milliseconds to the pressure of
the brake pedal. It is relieved by the new, integrated Secondary Water Retarder. This takes over up to 90 per cent of all
braking. That is good for the system and the environment
because brake dust is drastically reduced. By the way, it also
spares the driver’s nerves. This is because the new braking
technology makes frequent gear changes unnecessary and
the continuously steady braking power makes even driving
downhill and on serpentine roads a pleasure. And thanks to
its long maintenance intervals, the system also puts a brake
on your maintenance costs.
See and be seen. The lighting system in the Travego has
also always caused a stir. Powerful halogen headlamps are
included as standard equipment. Litronic headlamps, which
illuminate the road even better, are available as special
equipment (optional extra). Now the Travego Edition 1
­attracts attention with a further highlight: the inconspicuously integrated LED daytime running lights. Available as
special equipment, they make it easier to be seen by other
road users and so increase road safety.
Long proven cornering light. When turning, the light of the
Travego follows into the curve. The fog lamp on the inside
of the bend provides additional illumination so that a wider
area of road is illuminated. This makes driving at night even
safer. What is more, the fog lamps can be set so that they
remain lit for 30 seconds after locking up the vehicle. At the
end of a long working day your driver will not have to find
his/her way in the dark. Additional safety is also provided by
the rain-light sensor. It activates headlamps and the windscreen wiper system automatically as soon as the conditions
outside warrant it.

Safety if it comes to the worst.
Relax. The special construction of the Travego offers the driver
and passengers maximum protection.
Thoroughly rugged. The Travego not only looks robust:
it is so. Its body skeleton made of electro-welded, durable
square tubes cannot be damaged so easily. All-round ribs
and diagonal bracing give the framework a high transverse
and torsional stiffness and ensure a rollover strength
compliant with the ECE-R66 standard. In short: here all the
occupants know they are well taken care of.

Up front in the best seat. In particular, the driver and tour
guide will enjoy the feeling of safety that the construction of
the cockpit gives. The Front Collision Guard (FCG) ensures
that the forces generated in the event of a head-on collision
are absorbed in the best possible way. In order to increase
the distance from the danger zone and so further minimise
the risk of injury, the driver’s area would be displaced rearward in a collision by some precious centimetres − for the
best protection.
A safe workplace.
The driver of the Travego Edition 1 has an extremely safe and very comfortable
workplace. After all, our developers have done everything possible to further
­optimise it to the needs of the driver.
A relaxed working environment: the cockpit of the Travego Edition 1 already sets entirely new standards in terms of ease
of operation and comfort. The completely new instrument panel boasts an attractive design. The colour central display,
which brings together the most important information, is even easier to read thanks to an anti-glare real glass plate. The new
panel gives quick information on road speed, engine speed, and fuel and AdBlue levels by means of four dial instruments. In
between is the colour display to provides the driver with all essential information. Operation is via a practical keypad on the
new multifunction steering wheel. The intuitive menu navigation also enables the cruise control to be set, telephone calls to
be taken and the radio system to be operated. There is also the option to use a Bluetooth hands-free set and USB connection
for MP3.
The sophisticated level of convenience continues with the ignition lock. The new battery-less electronic key with immobiliser,
like in a car, meets the latest security standards. The ignition and engine are controlled by means of a two-step start/stop
button.
Always in the first row.
If you have been in a Travego you will know that every seat is like a front row seat.
On the Travego Edition 1 this is a little bit more so − for this flagship of any touring
coach fleet has been made even more attractive and comfortable for passengers.
The new generation of coach seats. The Travego Edition 1
impresses not only with a new engine generation but also
with a new generation of coach seats. The modern design
of the new seats is visually more appealing and noticeably
more comfortable. They sport a side panel and support arm
of high-grade aluminium. The new elegant armrest is large
and ergonomically shaped. The mechanism for adjusting the
seats and folding back the resculpted backrest is intuitive
to operate and could not be simpler. In the zero position, a
more upright backrest angle makes it easier for passengers
to stand up. Also new are the seat-belt buckles arranged on
the aisle side. They facilitate quick release for added safety.
The new sprung seat cushion provides the highest level of
seating comfort.

Almost limitless new options. The new high-quality upholsteries allow a host of compositions and really individual
configurations. Thanks to the modular system, the choice
is almost limitless. By the way, in all the variants the seat
frame is based on a lightweight twin tube aluminium frame.
Together with a patented gas spring bearing arrangement,
this prevents annoying seat vibrations when travelling empty.
Furthermore, the use of lightweight material has made it
possible to considerably reduce the weight of a double seat.
On average a weight payoff for you of 70 kg less per bus!
Convincing in every situation.
Ride quality has a high priority in the Travego. Its high quality chassis builds
an excellent foundation for driving pleasure and satisfaction of driver and
passengers.
Advanced axles. The road holding of the Travego is firstclass. It is particularly agile as the front axle with independent wheel suspension permits extremely large turning
angles. The robust and long-life Mercedes-Benz rear axle
is ideally matched to it. It effectively applies drive power to
the road with an agreeable quietness – for supreme ride
comfort.
Best performance scores. As a real first-class coach,
the Travego is perfectly sprung in any situation. Whatever
the load or state of the road surface, the shock absorbers
always operate in the optimal range.
The steered trailing axle on the M and L variants fits
harmoniously into this awesome ensemble. Thanks to
the independent wheel suspension it is very comfortable.
As a hydraulically steered active trailing axle, it makes
manoeuvring easier for the driver and makes the big Travego
variants unusually agile. It remains active when travelling
straight ahead, contributing to the high driving stability.

A real eye-catcher.
Powerful, striking, dynamic and elegant. It is not only the interior qualities that
make the Travego the unrivalled top coach model.
Attractive appearance. Wherever it appears, the Travego
draws attention. No wonder with a front like this: dynamic
headlamps, elegant front panel and the confident Star in the
centre combine to make an unforgettable, inviting “smile”.
Who can really resist that? Especially since the Travego also
looks striking from the side: with clean lines, uncluttered
surfaces, a characteristic curved B-pillar and slanted rear
wheel arches. Just a great appearance.
New: the crowning glory. With its new lines at the rear, the
Travego delivers a grand finale. The striking vent openings by
the tail lamps give the rear view a sculptured, dynamic and
powerful look. Exactly like a car with the Star, the tail lamps
are wrapped around the side edges. The Travego Edition 1 is
simply a Mercedes-Benz from front to rear.
