CANINES 5K
Start of race 2013. The race is open to all fitness levels. You can run,
walk, jog or simply want to cheer at the finish line, we would be happy to
see you!
Sunday, October 26th is Popcorn Park's third annual Run the Pines
for Canines 5K. The event is the effort of Justin Rand, Race Director.
Starting at 9 a.m., (rain or shine), will be a pet-friendly event for
runners and their best friends. Popcorn Park residents will receive
100% of the race's proceeds. In order to make this an animal friendly event, we have moved the run to the fall for more comfortable
weather. This year, look forward to chip-timing, great race t-shirts,
post-race chair massages & free entry into Popcorn Park for the
entire family. Invite family or friends to join us on race day. The race

RHINO HORN SMUGGLER RECEIVES LONGEST
SENTENCE FOR WILDLIFE SMUGGLING
Zhifei Li, is the owner of an antique business in China & has received a
70 month prison term for his role in trafficking 30 rhinoceros horns &
numerous rhino horn & elephant ivory artifacts from the U.S. to China.
Li was also ordered to serve 2 years of supervised release & to forfeit
$3.5 million in proceeds from his criminal activity. Li has been the
ringleader of a criminal enterprise & admitted he is the "boss" of 3
antique dealers in the U.S. whom he pays to obtain wildlife items &
smuggle them. Li pleaded guilty before US District Judge Esther Salas
in Newark Federal Court. All species of rhinos are protected under US
legislation & commercial trade in rhino horns is also not permitted.
AVMA REFUSES TO ADOPT POLICY
AGAINST FOIE GRAS
According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) the American
Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has refused to adopt a policy
against Foie Gras (the force-feeding of ducks, geese). On May 7, 2014,
the AVMA released a report on the Welfare Implications of Foie
Production. Despite the fact that they acknowledge the pain & suffering,
the AVMA refuses to take a stance or implement a policy on foie gras.
JAPAN IGNORES BAN & KILLS 30 WHALES
In March, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Japan to stop
killing whales in the Antarctic. Although whaling research programs
allowed the killing of whales for scientific research, it was stated that it
did not meet grounds for scientific research & banned Japan from
killing any more whales.
In April, Japan slaughtered 30 minke whales (16 male & 14 females) in
the first hunt since the ICJ ordered Tokyo to stop killing the animals.
Newspaper reports indicate that the annual expedition was a commercial activity masquerading as research.

& writhing in pain as workers ripped the fur out of their skin. Rabbits
endure this ordeal every 3 months for 2-5 years before being killed.
FETISH ANIMAL TORTURER GIVEN
10 YEAR SENTENCE
The HUMANE NEWS has featured several stories concerning Ashley
Richards & Brent Justice of Houston, Texas involving animal cruelty in the
making of "crush" videos. The videos that were sold online showed puppies, kittens, rabbits, mice & other animals tortured so horrifically that the
testimony was not heard in open court. As a result of a tip to PETA, since
the alleged producer was in Houston, the evidence was given to local
authorities. It is believed that this was an international video sales scheme.
Ashley Richards was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty
to three counts of animal cruelty. Co-defendant Brent Justice is scheduled
to appear in court in July

The huge number of prison blankets were donated by the
Federal Prison Industries UNICOR Recycling Center. AHS
divided the blankets between our 3 facilities.

The AHS was recently contacted by Stephen Meyers of the
Federal Prison Industries in Fort Dix, NJ who works with
the de-manufacturing of various products from Federal
Government Agencies. As a part of their recycling program, they had a large volume of towels and military
green wool blankets to donate. Arrangements were made
to have them delivered to Popcorn Park with a portion of
the blankets given to the AHS facilities in Newark and
Tinton Falls. Meyers brought with him two out custody
inmates as part of their re-entry into society program.
Inmates Sean Banks and Deshawn Sanderson are both animal lovers who found the tour through Popcorn Park to
be totally awesome! They got to meet up close & personal most of the residents in the sanctuary. After taking a
tour of the kennels, several dogs were brought to the exercise yard where the inmates met with Assistant Director
Scott Crawford and the canines. Crawford provided tips for
caring for pets and demonstrated some basic training
methods. Our thanks to Stephen Meyers for this HUGE
donation of blankets to keep the animals comfortable
when cold weather arrives.

lived with not even the barest necessities.
Now he waits to fulfill the hope of what

The AHS Tinton Falls facility was
contacted by a concerned neighbor who saw this young dog left
in a cage in direct hot sun without any shade, shelter or any
water. The AHS office dispatched an Animal Control
Officer to the scene & the local
Police Dept. were on the scene
to validate the manner in which
he was kept.
An Incident Report was made by
Neptune Police Officer K. Davis
to indicate that the dog was in the cage
for an extended period of time without
food and water. The Incident Report went
on to note that the dog was visibly malnourished & he viewed the dog’s ribs &
other skeletal features. Police Officer Davis
attempted to locate an owner through the
township dog licensing records, as well as
a phone number for the numerous people
on the mailbox. Both efforts met with negative results but were very much appreciated by AHS staff. The Animal Control
Officer left a note at the door to advise
where the dog would be brought. It is now several weeks & no one has contacted the AHS.
The sweet young pup is called Alijah & estimated to be about 9 months old. A responsible,
caring family is needed to give him the love & respect he deserves. For more information,

Nathalie & Frankie made a generous donation to help animals. The guests can also use

Forget-Me-Not seeds that AHS provides to them. Nat & Frankie also gave doggie goodie

done during that weekend. The

passes, pictures & a digital photo frame so that the public can view animals
at the shelter. The frame will be updated weekly.

The AHS was contacted by Orange
Animal Control Officer Rudy
Giordano after a building inspector
discovered a dozen dogs on a property that was allegedly abandoned.
A total of 12 dogs were found in
huts and cages & the Society dispatched ambulances to the scene to
rescue the dogs who had apparently
been neglected with older scars &
who were extremely thin with poor
body weight. Each dog was removed
from the heavy weighted chain or
the confines of their cage. They are
presently at the AHS Newark facility.
Giordano signed municipal complaints against two men who are purported to be the owners of some of
the dogs. Terrell Jones of East
Orange & Shean Crawford of Newark
pleaded guilty to animal neglect and
another count of failure to have a
dog license. Newspaper accounts
state that there was no evidence of
food or other nourishment for the Existing in the muck & mire of his world & dragging around a
dogs & the dogs were surrounded heavy chain. Beneath the fur, lives a hopeful, heavy heart.

to fight the owners’ efforts to get the dogs back. “These animals should not go where they were.
We don’t want to see history repeat itself. Obviously, you’ve got to do right by your animals”.

If you haven’t yet been to Popcorn Park, come down and visit! Our unique sanctuary caters to wildlife,
farm animals, exotics and birds that have been abused, abandoned, exploited, injured, handicapped, etc.
The park is open daily from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. On Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year’s Day, Popcorn
Park closes at 2 p.m. so that staff can be with their families. Our current admission fee is $5 for adults,
and $4 for children under 12 and senior citizens.
If you would like to support one of our residents, the donation cost is only $4.00 a month, for which
you will receive a color photo of your animal and an update every 4 months, (which includes a holiday
card), a membership card, plus free admission to Popcorn Park with presentation of your card. For a
copy of the Popcorn Park Wildlife Club booklet to help you choose the animal you wish to sponsor,

You can also sponsor Popcorn Park residents on our website at www.ahscares.org and click on Wildlife
Club. There is no required time limit – you can sponsor for as long as you’d like. Any donated funds that
exceed the care given for a particular animal will be applied to the care of other Popcorn Park residents.
Hamlet is a very handsome American black vulture who
decided to visit Whiting, one of the retirement villages not
far from Popcorn Park. When residents noticed him staying
in the area, they wondered if he was considering retiring
there, too. They gave us a call and we brought Hamlet back
to the refuge for a once over. As it turns out, Hamlet has a
broken wing and cannot fly, so he’s changed his mind about
his choice of retirement villages - it’s Popcorn Park! He’s
found a new friend, Gloria the turkey vulture, who has invited him to share her enclosure. Hamlet’s not the least bit
Shakespearean, but would welcome some applause – and
sponsorship support - from you.

Unfortunately, all the
young animals, who are so
appealing to visitors, are
slaughtered as they get
older. This idea is very
unappetizing to us, so
Popcorn Park offered to
neuter all the adult animals for free, but our
offer was rejected. The
farm did offer us one pig who had been a breeding sow for 7 years and was outliving her usefulness. We happily accepted Posie and she truly enjoys life now - she no longer has to be bred
and nurse endless rounds of babies. She can sit in the mud or in her little pool and just be happy.

Aramis was just one of many alpacas abandoned on an alpaca farm by their
owners. The Garden State Sheep Breeders Assn. was contacted and went in
to provide food and water and to shear the neglected animals. Some had
already died from the heat and lack of water before anyone was aware of
the situation. Popcorn Park was contacted to see if we might be able to
take an alpaca or two, and we did have a spot for one – with our llama,
Patriot! Happily, Aramis and Patriot quickly became best buddies. You could
be a part of their social circle, too - all you’d need to do is sponsor Aramis!

lodged in her birth canal. There was an
immediate delivery by the AHS vet but

letter sent to that address advises that the owner relocated

said Olive digs in the yard & keeps running away … so she’s

THE LAND OF OZ
She was just a pup
when she arrived
in March … & we
can’t imagine the
hurt, heartache &
loneliness that she has experienced. The emaciated dog was
brought to the AHS Newark facility after a passerby saw someone pick up the dog & body slam her to the ground and then
against the wall. She was immediately brought to the Medical
Dept. for an examination & found to have an upper respiratory infection. She stayed there for a month for continued care. We called her
“Calamity” & after several weeks of hoping for a new leash on life, she
was sent to Popcorn Park for a well-deserved chance at happiness.
Gary Fischer & Family adopted the sweet, energetic & active lass whom
they have now named Ruby. Amazingly, the Fischer Family reside on
YELLOW BRICK ROAD! Popcorn Park provides our own Yellow Brick
Road for all our orphans. Thanks to the Fischer Family, they have
opened their door to Emerald City where all of her troubles have
ended, thanks to the Great & Wonderful Wizard Gary & his family.
That's a magical ending, & just like Dorothy & Toto, there's no place
like home.

dog Vinnie met with. Then in walked Jonathan Iorio of
Brick – and Rocky said bye-bye to the kennel staff and
on the road to a new life. Our thanks to Jonathan for
rescuing a needy, eager-to-please pooch!

After being brought to the Plainfield Police Dept., two older gents
were hairy, unkempt messes but very loving & friendly to all. The
groomer had her work cut out for her & the adorable 8 year old
gents waited … and after 2 months at the Newark facility, Ben &
Jerry were transferred to Popcorn Park. They were very popular and
admired by many people who visited. Heidi Grady of Waretown visited Popcorn Park & fell in love with two guys. Our thanks to Heidi
for opening her heart & home to this poodle pair.

After being cruelly abandoned in a hallway, he
found life can be a ball!
Meet Goober, an unwanted dog who was
abandoned in the hallway of a Newark residence. A temperament evaluation revealed
a happy-go-lucky lad who gave a nice “sit”
when presented with a treat. He was eager
to please & when presented with a toy, he
wanted the staff to play with him rather
than playing with it by himself. As soon as
he arrived, we knew he would be good with
other dogs & loves people. But his deflated
ego needed a boost, so Goober was sent to
Popcorn Park for a chance to meet new
people & a chance to run in the exercise
yard. Chris & Stacy O’Neill with Kaitlyn &
Tyler of Toms River visited & adopted this
wonderful friendly fellow who they have renamed Rusty.
Goober, (now re-named Rusty), is loved & accepted in
his new family & repays with lots of kises.

It was in 2009 when a male Pit mix was found as a stray. He was
thin, bedraggled and had a very sad hang-dog look.
Unfortunately, the picture taken upon his arrival is not reproducible & has been removed due to complete overhaul of our
computer system.
Thankfully, we have just received an update on the dog we called
"Lovey". Shortly after Christmas, the pit mix got the greatest holiday gift ever! According to Jace C. McColley of Avenel, he has
renamed him Tuko and is a healthy, happy dog. He sent us a picture of Tuko lounging in one of his favorite spots. “He is a wonderful and intelligent dog, and an indispensable part of our family.”
What a great family to provide a home for this wonderful dog!
Patches' story was a sad one. She was brought to us by her owners of 6 years who
were moving and couldn't take her along. Left behind, she was sad, scared and
confused. To help cheer her up we made her our office mascot so she could be with
people all day and soon she calmed down and was wagging her tail, but it was
obvious that Patches had a little more than depression going on. She showed signs
of being in pain and not feeling well. Our veterinarian ran several tests and treated her for ailments that her owners neglected to tell us about, but we still needed
to get to the root of other problems Patches was having.
We decided that the best thing for Patches would be to see a neurologist. Our staff
member, Jen, fell in love with Miss Patches and took her to North Star Vets for a
consult, where it was determined that Patches may have had an orthopedic problem that could be treated with medications.
Patches began her treatment and she is now living the good life at home with Jen,
her husband Dan, and their pup, Jack. Patches improved and started to feel better,
but more than anything, she is happy to be a part of a loving family once again.

NEW JERSEY LEGISLATION
Senate Bill 2012 (Lesniak) would ban the import,
sale, purchase, barter or possession of ivory or rhinoceros horns & items containing ivory or rhino
horns. Ivory trafficking is at the highest rate ever
recorded with miore than 41 tons of illegal ivory
confiscated worldwide last year. It has passed the
Senate 37-0. Companion Bill A3128 (Mukherji) has
been voted out of committee & needs to be posted for a vote by the
Assembly. Senate bill 2012 passed the Senate 37-0 and in the Assembly, it
passed 75-2-1. Since it has passed both houses, it is now on the Governor’s
desk.
Assembly Bill 3012 (Ciattarelli, Dancer, Simon, Giblin) would criminalize
bestiality. Although present law makes it a crime to torture or neglect an
animal or creature, this bill would amend R.S. 4:22-17 to specifically make
it a crime to use, or cause or procure the use of an animal or creature in
any kind of sexual manner. Under the bill, bestiality would be a crime of
the fourth degree except that the person would be guilty of the third
degree if the animal or creature dies as a result of the violation; the animal or creature suffers serious bodily injury as a result of the violation; or
the person has a prior conviction for an offense that would constitute animal cruelty under the statute. Penalties range of 18 months in prison to
$10,000 or both. A crime of the third degree is punishable by 3-5 years
imprisonment, a fine of up to $15,000 or both. Bill passed the Assembly
76-0. The bill has now been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee:

NEWBURGH
The City of Newburgh is considering hiring a
contractor to use Conibear traps as a cruel legal method to get rid of
groundhogs near Washington Lake. Conibear traps are also known as
body-gripping traps which are exceedingly cruel, causing victims to suffer
immensely as they are slowly crushed or suffocated to death. The traps
are also indiscriminate & can pose a risk to dogs, cats, children, etc. Please

SUFFOLK COUNTY
The Suffolk County Legislature unanimously passed & is expected to be
signed by Suffolk County Executive Bellone. This bill makes Suffolk County
the first in New York to regulate the sources of animals for pet dealers. IR1047 will require dealers to provide inspection reports of the breeding
facilities on request and bans dealers in the county from buying animals
from commercial breeding facilities that have 1) a direct violation from
the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture within the past 2 years; 2) "No access" violations on two most recent inspection reports from the USDA; 3) Three or
more different indirect violations other than "no access” violations.
STATEN ISLAND
A second Vet Mobile launched on May 29th & will be in Staten Island
every Thursday thereafter. A complete full exam is $25 & includes other
super low prices. Vet Mobile 1 will continue to service Manhattan, Bronx,
Brooklyn, & Queens. As a special offer, Vet Mobile 2 will be offering FREE
RABIES VACCINATIONS for Staten Island residents. Also included in vet
services are Ultrasounds, Echocardiograms, major surgeries, orthopedics,
digital X-rays, bloodwork, etc.
NEW YORK STATE.
The Assembly has voted to approve A.9487. This would expand the reach
of NY’s spay/neuter fund to include Trap-Neuter-Return efforts but currently, the fund is not authorized to support TNR projects. The bill (SB7290) is
in the Senate Agriculture Committee. The bill must pass the Senate before
it becomes a law.
NEW YORK CITY
The NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs (DCA) has pulled the license of
Carriage Horse Driver Saverio Colarusso. He was arrested in December
after police saw his horse, Blondie, was pulling a carriage despite a
painful injury to its hind leg. Colarusso has had previous brushes with the
DCA enforcement. Colarusso told the police that the horse had been walking like that for four days but later backtracked on his statement & said
the horse was injured after stumbling because of a loud garbage truck
just 15 minutes prior to being stopped. He was fined $3,000 for failing to
comply with existing settlement agreement after carrying more than the
legally allowed 4 passengers & for failing to humanely care for a horse
under his supervision.
NEW YORK STATE
State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal introduced a bill that would have
pet owners lose the right to tattoo artwork on their cats & dogs. To subject
the animals to unnecessary painful procedures to satisfy the owners’ fancy
is reprehensible, said Rosenthal. It has passed the Senate & Assembly &
Gov. Cuomo is expected to sign the bill into law.
BELLPORT
Newspaper reports indicate that actress Isabella Rossellini purchased 8
acres to prevent the land from being developed. She plans on opening an
organic farm & to sell her produce to the Bellport restaurant.

Maximus
We get so many compliments from visitors to the refuge - on the health of the animals, the
cleanliness of the refuge, the friendliness of staff - and we love to hear them. It’s a comment on all the work that goes on behind the scenes and on the funds we invest in the good
care and health of our residents. Below are two examples of how we care for our animals.
It has been 3 years since the
mournful cries of four Aldabra tortoises were heard by neighbors of
a Highlands, NJ resident. The tortoises suffered from upper respiratory infections and some had
cracks in their shells. It took many
months to help the largest tortoise,
Maximus, with the horrendous
wound that the owner had covered
with fiberglass.
The Society/Popcorn Park staff rescued the tortoises through cooperation with N J Division of Fish &
Wildlife. Three of the tortoises
went to Cape May County Zoo but
the largest of all was Maximus who stayed at Popcorn Park. A special compound was quickly
built with an indoor heated area to keep him safe during the onset of cold weather.
In order to ensure that Maximus will be kept in comfort for his very long life span, we have
made plans for his future creature comforts. The Aldabra tortoise will be at the Brandywine
Zoo in Delaware for a couple of months. While he is there, a new large area with sod, sprinkler
system, pond & heated winter housing will be prepared and ready for him upon his return.
While at Brandywine, he will have a good size area & a pond to cool off in & 4 star accommodations! This undertaking will cost about $6,000 and if you would like to donate to Max's new

In October of 2013 while Dante was rolling around in his yard, staff noticed what seemed to be an abscess
under his chin. Two days later, we sedated him to be examined. Tissue samples sent to the lab revealed that
Dante had hair follicle cancer - a malignant follicular tumor. We sedated him again, removed any abnormal
tissue around the site and took X-rays of his lungs. They were clear, so we began several rounds of
chemotherapy, sedating him once every 5 weeks.
We planned his next treatment at NorthStar Vets
where a CT scan would verify the cancer had not
metastasized.
We also had a special transport crate fabricated
for Dante and all the big cats to make traveling
easier and time under sedation shorter. Dante’s
CT scan on June 12 revealed that he is winning
this fight!
Dante was originally rescued from a so-called
sanctuary in Texas who was planning on using
him in a canned hunt, that is, to be shot at close
range to provide a trophy for the shooter. We’ve
given Dante an exceptional life at Popcorn Park,
but it doesn’t come for free. The big cats’ transport crate costs $5,000 and we have not yet
received a bill for Dante’s care at NorthStar. You
can help by making a donation marked for
Dante’s care by mail or at ahscares.org, or by
sponsoring him in the Wildlife Club.

AHS PRESENTS THREE K-9 VESTS TO
PLEASANTVILLE (N.J.) OFFICERS
Pleasantville Police Officer Aristizabal and
K-9 Dozer met with one of the local
school groups who were there to tour
Popcorn Park.
A few months ago, AHS was contacted
by officers from the Pleasantville, NJ
Police Department. Three K-9 officers
had requested protection for their partners with bullet-resistant, stab-resistant
vests. The order was placed and the K-9
vests were waiting to go to their final
destination. In order to protect these
K-9s, it was important that they receive
them in a timely fashion. We contacted the K-9 officers and Pleasantville Police Officer David Aristizabal and
his partner, K-9 Pico visited Popcorn Park to receive all three vests for the safety and protection of their K-9s.

During the month of May, the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church's
Nursery School was taught the importance of giving and sharing -- to
family, friends, the community, etc. Among their efforts, the group
chose to help needy animals at Popcorn Park in Forked River. They
gathered dog food, cat food, treats,
"Care Bears", home-made catnip toys,
cleaning supplies and much more! At
the end of their fund raiser, one of
the lucky orphans that was adopted
from Popcorn Park visited the group
to thank them for their wonderful
efforts! "Pops" was originally found
in horrible shape at Newark's Penn
Station. He has a lifetime of love in
his home & he is one of the Society’s
good will ambassadors.
Pops LOVED meeting youngsters & we saw a whole different side of his personality!

CARTERET GIRL SCOUT TROOP DONATES
"GOODIE BAGS" & MEETS
VETERINARIAN .... AND WILMA
On May 21st our veterinarian, Dr. Adriana
Hordynsky and her
canine companion,
Wilma, paid a visit to
Carteret Girl Scout Troop
#80935 to speak to the
girls about health care
for their pets. Dr.
Hordynsky visited with
the girls last year and
they always enjoy spending time with her. While
Dr. Hordynsky handled
the educational part of
the presentation, Wilma

handled the hugs and
kisses portion. Each girl gave Wilma a mini check-up and got to listen to
her heart. In fact they were so excited about checking Wilma out with
the stethoscope, they lined up twice! Wilma looked like she enjoyed all
the attention as much as the girls enjoyed her!
The Scouts prepared “goodie bags” for the shelter dogs and cats, made
dog toys and wrote notes of encouragement on their hopes for each dog
and cat being adopted and finding a loving home. They also wrote
thank-you notes for Wilma and Dr. H.
It is so important to teach kids about caring for animals and we
thank Dr. H. for taking the time to pass valuable information
on to the Scouts each year.

Popcorn Park. Through the efforts of teacher, Lisa Auriemma, a
fund raiser was held for Zoey the cougar. AHS Assistant Director
Scott Crawford met with the school to accept a very generous
check of $1,500 to “adopt” Zoey as their football team’s mascot.

Motorcycles roar as the Roughnecks MC cruise down Humane Way followed by family and friends in pick-ups filled with donations.

Staff and visitors also joined in on the picnic for food & good times.
The Monmouth County Roughnecks Motor Cycle Club had a donation drive for Popcorn
Park and arrived with 3 truckloads of dog food, cat food & lots of supplies for the residents. At the end of the day, everyone gathered back in the picnic area and the
Roughnecks presented Popcorn Park with a cash donation of over $2,300.00. The Board of
Directors & staff would like to thank all of the members, their families and friends for their
dedication in helping the animals with much-needed donations & making this a great funfilled day for all involved.
POINT PLEASANT TEACHERS' DENIM DAY
HELPS SOCIETY DOGGIES
Teachers from Point Pleasant Boro High School picked Popcorn Park for the
Denim Day donation.
Monthly denim days are conducted by members of the Point Pleasant
Education Association (PPEA). The teachers pay $5 to wear jeans to school
on a designated Friday. Each month, they choose various local and
national charities to benefit and in April, the PPEA membership chose
Popcorn Park as the recipient! The schools participating in the district
included Point Pleasant High School, Memorial Middle School, Nellie
Bennett Elementary School and Ocean Road Elementary School. Popcorn
Park wishes to acknowledge with thanks and appreciation to the PPEA
membership for choosing us! Popcorn Park received a generous check in
the amount of $875!

Rock 2 Adopt 4 was another huge success! Music, Fun and Food! Popcorn Park was
host to a great bunch of people who came out entertain the public. There were
great bands who played continually during the 2-day event, great weather and a
great time. A thank you to the jugglers, face painters, and magicians who gave the
attendees a great show! Everyone enjoyed themselves and Vinnie made an appearance and loved it; he stayed out front most of the day, sat & listened to some
music and met with his fans! Thank you to all the bands who played, all the sponsors who helped out making this possible and to Donna Torres who put this all
together -- take a bow -- you did a fantastic job! Rock 2 Adopt 4 raised over
$7,000.00, that’s amazing!
The Wag was one of 16 crowd-pleasing bands that entertained
with vocals and music.
The band Ripped was a real crowd pleaser; in addition, band members
generously helped out in other ways to help make the event a success.

Kyle & Amanda Nilsen of Manalapan lost their beloved Australian
heeler, Red, to cancer, who was like a child to them when he was
rescued 7 years ago. Before Red passed, Kyle & Amanda had one
more birthday for him surrounded by all his family & friends.
According to Kyle: "We just wanted Red to see how many lives he
had touched over the years. There was a huge turnout and all
guests were asked to bring new dog toys -- not for Red -- but to
donate to other rescue dogs
in his memory. He brought
so much happiness into our
lives that we figured these
toys could bring happiness
to his fellow rescue dogs".

memory & kindness known
so maybe others would
donate more to our organization & possibly interest
people in adopting rescue

Rep. Sherman Mack introduced a bill that declares "fox pen hunting is
part of the folklife heritage of the state and, as such, should be preserved
in order to help maintain the folklife culture". The bill passed the House
of Representatives 68-16 & was assigned to the Louisiana Senate education committee.

MARYLAND
A fee on commercial dog/cat food was implemented to fund a statewide
spay-neuter program aimed at low-income communities. The law will provide grants to local governments & animal groups in the state that provide & promote pet sterilization services. The fee on pet food is funded by
a surcharge on the registration fees that pet food manufacturers must pay
to sell their products in Maryland. Consumers can expect to pay about 36
cents more for food per pet each year. It is estimated that it will raise
about $400,000 a year.

In June 2013, North Ridgeville Humane Officer Barry Accorti gained
national attention when he shot & killed 5 kittens that were in a backyard
woodpile as children looked on. According to Alley Cat Allies, this same
officer trapped a baby raccoon & shot & killed her, again with children as
an audience. The Alley Cat Allies is asking for dismissal of Accorti. For

Senate Bill 1261 known as Rocco’s Law has passed the Senate. Rocco was
a Pittsburgh police k-9 who was fatally stabbed while helping to capture a
suspect. House Bill 2026 is a companion measure which would increase
the penalty for torturing a police dog.

Sammie came to AHS
in 2009 when the
helpless little guy was
found lying in a city
street, unable to
move. Sammie was
immediately brought
in for medical treatment but they could
not determine the
cause of his immobility. It was thought he
either suffered a
stroke or was the
victim of a traumatic
event. After being
given all of the necessary medical care,
physical therapy, Sammie was soon back on his feet & getting around
well. Sadly, Sammie suffered permanent neurological damage that
causes him to be unstable on his feet & have occasional uncontrollable awkward movements. After being adopted a few times, Sammie
was returned due to unfortunate accidents due to his condition. It
was decided that the best place for Sammie would be on the Animal
Haven Farm. He spends his days playing with his best friend Nigel
the Yorkie, running & jumping like a pup, & getting lots of love from
staff & sponsors. The stroller was brought in by one of Sammie’s
sponsors to take him for walks when he isn’t always up for walking.

SHARE-A-PET
PROGRAM
The Society’s unique SHARE-A-PET PROGRAM is helping many animals thanks to the
kindness and generosity of many HUMANE NEWS readers. The animals are placed on the program
on the basis of such details as victims of cruelty, handicap, length of stay, etc.
As a result of our efforts, brand new facilities have been given to these orphans. You can help by
“adopting” one of these orphans for $10.00 a month. In turn, you will receive a color photo and
report of your pet every four months, plus a membership card which entitles you to FREE ADMISSION TO POPCORN PARK. You are also invited to visit your pet, take him for walks, bring him treats,
toys, and even adopt him. All funds gathered under this program are applied directly to the care of
these animals. Any funds that exceed what is needed for a particular animal are applied to the care
and welfare of other shelter anmals. You can also view and sponsor all Share-A-Pets on our web site

Nigel of Newark
Nigel was found by a good Samaritan,
abandoned in Independence Park in
Newark in November 2011. He was
cold and hungry and grateful to be rescued and brought to AHS. He was
absolutely wonderful with staff and
quickly found a home. Just as quickly, he
was returned, described as having
shown aggression to his new owner. We
thought it only fair to give him another
try, but unfortunately, he was returned
for the same reason. Sweet as he is with
staff, it seems Nigel has anger management issues, (or maybe he just wants to
stay with us!) On the Animal Haven
Farm, Nigel has lots of dog buddies, a
big play yard and comfy beds, and plenty of people he adores, so if that was his plan, it
worked - Nigel will indeed stay with us. But he would still love some understanding sponsors who don’t need the patter of little Nigel feet in their home, who would love to share
their heart. Might that be you?.
Blossom of Newark
Last November, a 5 month old terrier was
thrown out of the window of a moving car in
Newark’s Branch Brook Park. She was picked up
by the AHS Animal Control Officer & brought to
our night emergency service who checked for
any broken bones. She was nearly
hairless & suffered from demodectic
mange.
Within a short time, we noticed a
problem with a hind leg which we
found was a luxated patella. A visit to
an orthopedic surgeon discovered
that she has a severely deformed hind
leg & it is doubtful that any surgery
would correct the luxated patella.
Blossom has completed physical therapy & has been ready for adoption.
She runs, plays, jumps & would love a
new family but visitors are wary of
any physical concerns or what the
future holds. We have placed this
adorable & hopeful pup on the ShareA-Pet Program, so if you cannot share
your home, perhaps you will share
