JACKSON - A TALE OF TWO HOARDING HOMES ... ONE OWNER PUP HIT WITH BASEBALL BAT & THROWN INTO FREEZER Story & Photos Page 21 Story & Photos Page 6 cover OVER 275 DOGS RESCUED FROM HOWELL HOARDING HOME Story & Photos Page 20 ANIMALS in the NEWS VOLUNTEERS AT AHS NEWARK HAVE BEEN SPECTACULAR IN THEIR EFFORTS! PRESIDENT OBAMA SIGNS MEASURE TO DRAMATICALLY REDUCE ANIMAL TESTING On June 22nd, President Obama signed into law the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. The measure will reform the way chemicals are regulated & will save hundreds of thousands of lives by replacing animal tests with human-relevant alternatives. Thousands of phone calls and e-mails demanded reforms to legislative proposals based on decades-old science. This will revolutionize chemical testing. According to the National Anti-Vivisection Society, the status quo continues to be maintained with lip service paid, but minimal action taken, toward moving away from the practice. Animal experiments are still widely used by pesticide, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, & other consumer products industries. MILITARY WORKING DOGS ABUSED & KILLED AT HOUND HELL PHOTO SUPPLIED Volunteers at AHS in Newark are a great bunch filled with energy, patience and big hearts! Our Newark pups had a fun day meeting old and new friends at the Summer Adoption Event hosted by Bone Appetit Barkery & Spa in Kearny, NJ. We would like to give a special thank you to Barkery hosts Michelle & Kathy and Eileen from Forgotten Tails who are truly amazing supporters of our orphans. Another big heartfelt thanks to our hardworking volunteers who give up their free time every weekend going to adoption events, pack walks and a very special Sandy Hook Beach Day. Best news of the day … two of our dogs found their forever homes! DOLPHINS TO BE SHIPPED TO ARIZONA DESERT SO PEOPLE CAN SWIM WITH THEM Arizona is constructing a Dolphinaris Arizona – an entertainment park that will feature 12 captive dolphins in which customers will swim with the dolphins. Dolphinaris is a Mexico-based company with five locations – this will be the first in the U.S. It will open next door to the OdySea Aquarium. They will die before their life expectancy in the wild. While in captivity, they suffer immensely both physically & emotionally. Log on to The Petition Site to sign against this effort. CAPTIVE DOLPHIN FACILITY PROPOSED FOR GRAND TURK Pres. Obama signed the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act which should have meant that ALL working dogs would be guaranteed a ride home & retirement in the U.S. Congressman Frank LoBiondo (NJ) was one of the sponsors of the bill. In March, U. S. Sen. Robert Menendez (NJ) introduced legislation to create medals for courageous canines & their handlers. IN THE MEANTIME ….. handlers who tried to adopt decommissioned dogs failed as two Pentagon employees and a contractor had secretly given canines to others. On June 17th, a horrific image surfaced of a slew of dead dogs that were found on the grounds of Eastern Securities (ES) in Kuwaiti. Several US dog vendors & others posted photos of longstanding abuse. The dogs that were trained to detect explosives were mistreated, underfed, had eye/skin infections & more. Cancerstricken dogs were made to work until they died. Dogs were not given proper antibiotics or medication and the 24 dogs that were killed, were not killed by a doctor, but a kennel cleaner. It is still not known how they were killed. A double-page spread in the NY POST by reporter Maureen Callahan includes information that ES phone numbers were disconnected & the e-mail shut down. Sadly, these brave, hard-working dogs did not deserve the manner in which they were treated or how they died. Follow the money: ES was being paid $3,000 per dog per month by the Kuwaiti government, but other sources say the figure is much higher. There is more involved in this story. A Houston –based company had a contract with the US Army. Most recently, the number of remaining dogs is unknown but were in the care of the Kuwaiti government. PERDUE ANNOUNCES MAJOR ANIMAL WELFARE POLICY REFORM According to the Animal Welfare Institute, the Turks and Caicos Islands have long been a natural oasis for eco-friendly tourists in the Caribbean. There is a proposal to build a captive dolphin facility on Grand Turk. Cruise lines and their passengers are the incentive for proponents of these facilities. Cruise ship passengers buy “swim-with-dolphin” excursion tickets on board & go straight from the port to the facility. Please tell Arnold Donald, President & CEO of Carnival Corporation, to oppose the proposed Grand Turk captive dolphin facility. These intelligent mammals need their families & a miles-wide ocean environment for their health & well-being. Penning them up for entertainment is a life-long misery. Have we not learned anything? Sea World and the National Aquarium have made policy changes. You can help by logging on to The Petition Site to let Mr. Donald know of your PHOTO COURTESY: ADAM CUPIAL concerns: http://bit.lv/297nB0n 2 HUMANE NEWS August 2016 After a shocking undercover investigation by Mercy for Animals (MFA), Perdue farms has issued new requirements for all its poultry facilities. This will include environmental enrichment, natural light, curbing malicious abuse & eliminating cruel live-shackle slaughter. The policy also addresses the unnaturally rapid growth rates of chickens which causes incredible suffering & crippling them, which leads to many of them dying of organ failure. This move by Perdue will reduce the suffering of nearly 680 million chickens across 2,200 farms every year. The undercover investigation by MFA revealed sickening animal abuse, birds kicked like footballs, violently stomped to death by workers & more. This is supposed to be the most comprehensive animal welfare policy ever adopted by a major chicken producer. It doesn’t give any time frame as to when this will begin ….. “NEAR-TOTAL” BAN ON DOMESTIC TRADE IN IVORY ….. The U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service completed a rulemaking process under the Endangered Species Act to institute a near-total ban on the domestic commercial trade of Asian elephant ivory. The Executive Order on Combating Wildlife Trafficking substantially limits imports, exports & sales of African elephant ivory across state lines. ANIMALS in the NEWS COLE BROS. CIRCUS CANCELS TOUR TIGERS REMOVED FROM THAILAND TOURIST ATTRACTION The Tiger Temple Sanctuary in Thailand was a tourist attraction & they battled in court until Wildlife Conservation Office won an order to seize the big cats. The abbot who founded the Buddhist-themed zoo vanished; several others were arrested on suspicion of wildlife trafficking. After the tigers were removed, the authorities found 40 dead tiger cubs stored in a freezer & 20 more preserved in jars. Tigers spent almost every hour confined to barren concrete cells & only allowed out to make money from tourists who touched, petted, hugged & took a selfie with a heavily sedated wild animal. After all was closed down, they made a grim discovery of a slaughterhouse where tigers were held for slaughter for skins, meat & bones to be exported outside the country or sent to restaurants in Thailand that serve tiger meat to tour groups. Cole Bros. has failed to meet even minimal standards for animal care as established by the USDA & the Animal Welfare Act. They were repeatedly cited for depriving animals of veterinary care & adequate space among other violations. According to PETA, its trainers have used blowtorches & electric prods on elephants. In 2015, animal groups planned a protest in Islip, NY & it became a celebration after town officials refused to give the circus a permit to perform. A petition helped persuade the West Deptford Lions Club in NJ to cancel a planned performance. The circus announced it will not be touring in 2016. NATIONAL AQUARIUM PLANS TO SEND DOLPHINS TO SEASIDE SANCTUARY ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND PUTS STOP TO CRUEL “DONKEYBALL” Thanks to the efforts of the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), the Margaretville Central School District declined to plan an annual fund raiser based on the cruel activity. The District used the donkey basketball as a fund raiser until the ALDF filed a notice of intent to file a lawsuit. This year, they cancelled the event. MONTREAL BANS HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES FOR 1 YEAR MORATORIUM BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN PHOTO : WIKIPEDIA/NASA The National Aquarium plans to move 8 Atlantic bottlenose dolphins from their captive setting in Baltimore to a seaside sanctuary off the coast of Florida or in a Caribbean nation over the next 4-5 years. There are an estimated 300 dolphins now in captivity including 100 used by the U.S. Navy. ARIZONA GOVERNOR DUCEY SIGNS BAN ON DOG RACING INTO LAW June 24th is the date for the last race at Tucson Greyhound Park. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed a ban on dog racing into law. For years, greyhounds suffered & died; left to languish inside warehouse-style kennels, many wore muzzles, had limited access to water & subsisted on raw, diseased meat. Thankfully, the remaining dogs will be placed locally & with waiting adoption groups. PHOTO COURTESY: STEVE HAND Effective immediately, horse drawn carriages will be banned on the streets of Montreal. Mayor Denis Coderre announced that there will be a moratorium on the practice for a year in order to re-evaluate the program. CHICK CULLING TO BE ELIMINATED BY 2020 According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, United Egg Producers has agreed to finally eliminate chick culling by 2020—a practice that never should have been happening in the first place. This is a step in the right direction, but it only occurred thanks to the tireless work of the animal protection movement. JOHN HOPKINS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ENDS TRAINING ON LIVE ANIMALS John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore will eliminate the course in which students operate on live, anesthetized pigs which are then euthanized. A bill was introduced in the Maryland legislature to ban the practice. The dean’s office & task force reviewed the course & felt that the class isn’t essential for turning out a great physician in training. They will no longer use live animals to train its students. The only other school to use animals in medical education is the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga. www.ahscares.org 3 SOCIETYNEWS ROUGHNECKS ONCE AGAIN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO OUR ANIMALS Roughneck Motorcycle Club of NJ members and our heroes! Roughneck bikes come roaring down Humane Way. More pet food and needed donations of every kind. A tremendous amount of planning and preparation begins in early March. Since then, every weekend, through good and bad weather, the Roughnecks manned their posts at Petco of Middletown and PetSmart of Holmdel and collected donations for Popcorn Park. Finally on June 4th, you heard the roar of the engines as the Roughnecks started down Humane Way. A trailer filled to the brim and a packed pickup truck followed the motorcycles. Handshakes and hugs were exchanged, and it was back to the donation shed to unload the bounty. With all the collected items, the Roughnecks filled our donation sheds from top to bottom. In addition to the donations of cat and dog food, linens, cleaning supplies and numerous other needed contributions, they collected over $5,000!!! After unloading, we all came back to the picnic area where other Roughneck members were grilling hot dogs and burgers for the club, family members, and any Popcorn Park visitors who were hungry. Members and their families walked through the zoo and enjoyed their tours. The weather was great for another Roughneck Family Day at the Park. The Roughneck Family Day has, and always will be, one of THE best days of the year -not just because of the amount of donations the animals receive, but for the opportunity to be in the company of such a compassionate group. We are forever grateful for the continued support of these remarkable men and to all of you who have donated to them on our behalf. Stacked dog food donations alone nearly reached our storage shed ceiling! The Roughnecks grilled and generously fed anyone in Popcorn Park who was hungry in addition to their own members and families. Sadly we decided that 2015 would be our last Rock2Adopt. Solo artist Alex Chernick performing cover rock and Christian rock. This is Alex's 6th year with Rock 2 Adopt. It was Memorial Day holiday weekend …. but no holiday for a 6 week old pup who was experiencing a horror that no animal should have to know. Orange Police Officers Hamm & Rogers answered a complaint of animal cruelty. The witness did not want to be identified but had heard a puppy crying & when he listened at the door, he could hear a dog being hit & yelping & this occurred over several days. The Police tried several times to gain entrance, the man finally opened the door to let them in a very small studio apartment. They were allowed to check the room & couldn’t find a small place where a small animal would be. They observed dog food in a bowl,a crate & blanket. P.O. Rogers opened the working freezer & observed a blanket inside the freezer, in which they discovered a puppy wrapped in a blanket. The pup was alive & bleeding from the mouth & had difficulty in breathing. It was at this time, the pup’s owner said that the building didn’t allow pets & he tried to keep it quiet. Orange Animal Control Officer Rudy Giordano brought the pup with a broken jaw to AHS. The AHS had the pup taken immediately to the Animal Emergency & Referral Associates in Fairfield where they found a fractured skull as well as a swollen and painful broken jaw. After all necessary treatment was done, “Rosey” was sent to our Forked River facility. In the meantime, she is the sweetheart of the veterinary staff & also enjoys long walks with new friends & playtime. Rosey’s stay in the hospital & her rehabilitation will PHOTO SUPPLIED not come without a price. Our Res-Q Fund has been set up for such sorrowful incidents. You can also text: HumaneHelp to 41444 to make a contribution to Rosey’s care. A few videos can be seen on YouTube plus frequent updates can be found on Associated Humane Popcorn Park Facebook. The abuser has a court date in Orange Municipal Court on June 30th. For more information on Rosey, call 609-693-1900 or e-mail [email protected] EPILOGUE: There are so-called critics of AHS who believe that they are “stunned” by our judgmental adoption criteria. AHS requires a copy of a landlord’s pet clause or a notarized statement from a landlord. Rosey was living in a building where no pets were allowed & this man should never have had access to obtaining a pet. AHS will continue to have this as part of our adoption policy. SURRENDERED DUE TO “INSTANT” PARALYSIS – WALKS FINE NOW! After a short time, Lucy gained movement in her back legs & now walks fine! 6 HUMANE NEWS Meet Lucy – an adorable cute & cuddly 4 month-old Shih Tzu that was brought to the AHS for inevitable euthanasia …. as far as the family was concerned. They surrendered her because “in an instant”, the pup developed a paralysis of her hind quarters. They said they did not know what happened but did not want to deal with it any longer. What happened behind closed doors is not known. Could she have been dropped? Did she fall off a bed/sofa? Was she roughhousing with youngsters? X-rays and manual manipulation provided no clues as to the possible cause of her condition. After a brief time at AHS, it was discovered that she had use of her back legs & was not incontinent as was thought she might be. Lucy started out on “sea legs” and by now is almost normal in her gait. She is housebroken and gets along fine with other dogs. She is a happy-go-lucky pup who is curious about anything that moves. Whatever mishap or mishandling she experienced, her neurological problems are almost gone. Lucy has her whole life ahead of her and would provide love and laughter to a wonderful family. File 26390-SF (Forked River). August 2016 An adorable Lucy is housebroken, and would love to be your family’s greatest addition. Swollen eyes, face & crusty wounds over his body. COVER STORIES NEPTUNE STRAY MAY HAVE BEEN USED AS BAIT DOG Ulysses is having a ball at the Tinton Falls shelter. This sorrowful Pit Bull was found as a stray in Neptune & we have named him Ulysses. Just like the mythical Ulysses, he overcame many, many obstacles until he reached a safe place. It is believed that this intact male may have been used as a bait dog. By the time he arrived at AHS in Tinton Falls, his face was swollen, his eyes were shut but his personality stood out above the rest. He clearly needed help and treasured the realization that there were kind people who were gentle with his wounds and his heart. Ulysses is getting the care he needed and now waits for a home where he can lay on a soft blanket & rest easy that someone cared enough to bring him into their heart. He is at our Tinton Falls facility getting all of the care he needs. For more information, call AHS at 732-922-0100 or e-mail [email protected] Your donations to our Res-Q Fund have helped him and now he waits for your visit. You can also donate by testing HumaneHelp to 41444. What a wonderful opportunity we had to make a difference in his life …. that there is love, kindness and respect that was waiting for Ulysses upon his arrival. Ulysses is a gentle, kindly dog who will no longer be exploited or abused. SEVERE MANGE, MALNUTRITION & TOO MUCH TROUBLE FOR HIS OWNER Due to malnutrition, poor diet, excessive crating & lack of care, Rock had a scaly, crusty skin condition. He had lax tendons which caused him to walk on his wrists. Meet Rock, a 3 month old pit bull who is sweet, love-starved & had a severe case of demodectic mange. It was so severe, he had nary a hair on his body. His owner surrendered Rock because he couldn’t afford to keep him. He said he had been treated by multiple vets. We doubt that – within a few days at the Medical Dept. at Popcorn Park, the skin was losing the crusty, scaly appearance & hairs started growing back. Demodectic mange can be brought on by a number of factors including malnutrition. Rock also has very lax tendons in his front legs & walks on his wrists. This can be caused by excessive crating & malnutrition. Thankfully, Rock is getting a taste of what a good life he will have! The veterinarian is hoping that exercise and good nutrition to straighten his It didn’t take long for a healthy diet, good medlegs. If not, braces may be needed to ical care & exercise to bring out the improved correct the condition. appearance of hopeful handsome Rock. HELP US BUILD THEIR NEW HOME!! Frodo enjoying his egg. Four baboons in need got a fabulous gift at Christmas - a permanent home at Popcorn Park. They settled in to temporary quarters and now they’re ready for the new and more spacious area we’re getting ready just for them - will you help? If you’ve not heard about them, here’s their story in a nutshell. The four baboons belonged to a terminally ill man who could no longer care for them. His family made arrangements for them, but the transporter they hired knew the four male baboons would not be headed to the best of all places. He also knew of Popcorn Park and reached out to us for help on Christmas Eve. On December 27th, four fellas in need of a home arrived at our door. Today, six months after their arrival, their troop order is exactly the same, and they get along every bit as well. They settled in easily, enjoy the attention of staff, and are content. At Easter, staff dyed (the safe kind, of course) a good amount of hard-boiled eggs for some of the animals. As you can see in three of the photos here, each of the baboons gave his egg his full attention, and all enjoyed the special treat immensely. We had no history on them, no ages, no names, so we named the four bachelors after characters in “The Lord of the Rings” - Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Frodo. They have a very specific order of dominance and it insures that they all get along well. When the foursome arrived, we housed them in very livable, but temporary, quarters. We are currently updating and reconfiguring another space for them, the former enclosure of Dante the tiger who passed away. The area is not next to any other big cats, so they will feel safe. Gandalf is the alpha male and is the protector of the group. He also makes all the decisions and has the first pick of anything offered to the four such as when food is offered. Aragorn is second in command and right under Gandalf in terms of dominance. Frodo is at the bottom of the little troop, and the least dominant. If something new is introduced that the others are unsure of, Frodo is sent in to check it out. If he is given food, he politely offers it to those “above” him. Legolas is almost a “go-between” - he sometimes hangs out with Frodo and is a source of companionship for him, and at other times, Legolas will pal around with Gandalf and Aragorn. The order established among the baboons, much like a pack of dogs or wolves, insures that they all live peaceably together. Inside their den, they have new heated floors being installed at a cost of $13,000 plus new benches and resting tables. Outside, the entire area needs to be capped with cyclone fencing with additional hot line to keep them from climbing too high. The area is approx. 80’ long and width varies between 40’ and 20’. The cost is $22,000. Flashing is needed for the trees, plus new platforms and benches will be added. They will be provided with everything imaginable to make their lives rich and comfortable. If you can help with the expenses of providing this fabulous home, please make a donation to Popcorn Park by check or online and mention it’s for the baboons or text a donation: BABOON to 41444. Your help is greatly appreciated. Legolas is the one baboon who spends time comfortably with the “top dogs” Gandalf and Aragorn as well as low man on the totem pole, Frodo. AFTER OWNER’S DEATH, HOMELESS TWOSOME FIND FRIENDS IN PENNSYLVANIA Snowball & Billy found a great home in Pennsylvania thanks to True Friends Animal Welfare Society . After a Bloomfield resident suddenly passed away, a close friend could find no one to take this adorable twosome. AHS came to the rescue & Snowball and Billy were brought to the Newark facility. Within a short time, they were sent to our Forked River facility for a chance to see new faces & new opportunities. No luck! Amy & Joe Uggiano of Pennsylvania saw the doggy duo and suggested another change of scenery! POORLY NEGLECTED SHEPHERD FINDS HEALING AT AHS & THEN A LIFELONG HOME Leoti, going to a lifetime of love from the Fizer family, who also have 2 Italian Greyhounds. Snowball and Billy, on the day they were brought to AHS after their owner had passed away. Leoti was a bag of bones and protruding ribs when her owners said they could not care for her medical conditions. She was suffering from multiple skin, eye and ear infections. Most of her hair was missing and caused an uncomfortable, distressing itch. It may sound like a lot of problems and we tackled them all! Good medical care, good meals, medicated baths, and Leoti began to thrive once again. Josh Fizer & family of Toms River noticed and brought in their two little dogs, (Italian Greyhound twosome), that hit it off with Leoti right away! No more skin, eye & ear problems which were all cleared up. Leoti enjoyed relaxing with the staff until she was adopted. Leoti was a bag of bones who needed a lot of medical care. 12 HUMANE NEWS August 2016 Featured on the back page of our June issue was Benson who was deliberately cut up to incite other dogs for a blood-thirsty fight. The injured dog was thrown over a fence into a private backyard where he huddled in a back corner until AHS was called to rescue him. He was a terrified & shy puppy in September 2015, and as much as we tried to socialize the young boy, he had a fear-based reaction to his existence. He was given all necessary medical care & was eventually brought to Popcorn Park where he had a room in our recovery suite. Benson was so scared when he arrived. He wouldn't walk on a leash and cringed when you petted him. It took lots of time, love, and patience, but little by little, we brought Benson out of his shell. Soon he began playing with other dogs, playing with us, and enjoyed getting attention. After a couple of months, Benson put his sad past behind him and started loving life and all of his new friends. He had a little trouble meeting new people though, so we knew it would be tougher to find that special person that would come in several times to meet Benson in order for him to become comfortable with them. Finally, that person came along. Sal Concepcion of Ocean Gate read Benson's story online and felt compelled to come in and meet him. Benson shied away from him at first but Sal didn't give up quickly, and came in about 8 times to spend time with Benson. Soon, Benson was playing with Sal, hugging him like he did the rest of us, and was happy to be spending time with him. Happy Endings ABUSED, SLASHED & USED AS BAIT DOG FINDS LOVING HOME IN OCEAN GATE This terrified pup was slashed to incite a blood-thirsty dog fight. He was abandoned & thrown over the fence of a private residence in Newark. Benson has gone off to start his life with his new dad and we want to wish them both a very long, very happy and healthy life together. Congratulations! We'll miss you Benson, and love you always. SWEET SISTERS WITH UNKNOWN FUTURE FIND A HAPPINESS HAVEN IN TOMS RIVER Nela & Sachy were “temporarily” waiting for their owner to come & take them back home. Finally, they found a lifetime of love with Robert Petronella of Toms River. Nela and Sachy are two sweet sisters that were brought to us for temporary care while their owner straightened out their own life. It took a few months for the owner to consider it might be best for the dogs if they were surrendered to AHS so they’d have a chance to move on to a better life. Once the decision was made, Nela & Sachy’s owner surrendered the 6-7 year old ladies. Both were spayed and included on our Facebook pages for another chance at happiness. Robert Petronella of Toms River visited and decided that this doggie duo would be a perfect fit at his home! Sal Concepcion of Ocean Gate visited with the shy Benson several times & finally adopted him. DUTCH THE DOGUE DE BORDEAUX EN ROUTE TO MARVELOUS HOME IN MARYLAND Valentine’s Day was the last time that Dutch spent with his owner. The 3 yearold Dogue de Bordeaux was surrendered as his owner could no longer keep him. After some time at AHS in Newark, he was transferred to our Tinton Falls shelter where he was neutered and waited for “a new leash on life”. It didn’t take too long after posting his handsome pic over the internet for people to start showing interest. The Howell family of Gaithersburg, MD visited the Tinton Falls facility and adopted the big boy! Our thanks for their kindness and efforts in adopting a shelter dog. It applies to current or former spouses; individuals with whom the petition has a child in common, or where there has been a dating relationship, etc. CALIFORNIA According to The LINK-Letter, the California General Assembly adopted H.R.28 which resolves that compliance with Education Code provisions should include educating students on the principles of kindness & respect for animals & observance of laws, regulations & policies pertaining to the human treatment of animals. It also encourages the Supt. Of Public Instruction to ensure the incorporation of humane education in California’s core curriculum. TEXAS According to AWI, the infamous horse slaughter plant was demolished – one of the last three US-based plants used to kill horses hauled to it from across the country & Mexico. PENNSYLVANIA Crystal Davis, who had been known on her horse rescue Facebook page as “A LIFE SAVED IS A LIFE SAVED” faces 12 counts of animal cruelty charges. Officials said they found her animals without proper access to food, water or shelter. The Facebook page can no longer be found. NEWS FROM NEW YORK NEW YORK STATE Assemblyman James Brennan sponsored a measure that would allow cremated pet remains to be interred in a human cemetery, grave, crypt or niche. The bill excludes cemeteries affiliated with religious institutions. A separate regulation enacted in 2014 allowed pet cemeteries to accept human remains. The new bill allows cemeteries for humans to accept pet remains. All pets would be covered; not just dogs and cats. Very few states have such laws. In Pennsylvania, they allow cemeteries to have one section for humans, one for pets & one area for both. JONES BEACH The Federal Court of the State of New York dismissed a complaint that had been filed by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) alleging the NY Dept. of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation were in violation of the Endangered Species Act by allowing feral cats to live in Jones Beach State Park where a group of piping plover birds also lives. The state called ABC’s allegations unreliable as to the connection between the presence of the cats & impact on the plovers. The piping plover population has made an immense recovery NEW YORK STATE State legislators have voted to continue the prohibition against state licensing of slaughterhouses within 1,500 feet of a residence for four more years. Before the restrictions were imposed in 2008, NYC failed to adequately control poor air quality, health threats from live poultry markets in residential & retail areas. NEW YORK STATE AS1265 would create the crime of companion animal hoarding. The bill is in the Assembly Agriculture Committee. PENNSYLVANIA H.B. 869 (Bizzarro) would prohibit people convicted of a first or second degree misdemeanor or a felony from further caring for animals they have harmed by requiring them to forfeit the animals to shelters or other organizations dedicated to preventing animal cruelty. The House Judiciary Committee approved the measure & it now goes to the full House for consideration. FLORIDA As stated in The Link-Letter, the South Florida Link Coalition has established a hotline (877-999-5374) to receive crisis calls and provide direct service to protect pets and people. The coalition is a multidisciplinary, multi-county organization with representatives including Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, animal care & control, fire rescue, Spay & Neuter Alliance of the Treasure Coast, St. Lucie County Humane Society, Palm Beach County Victim Services, Palm Beach County School Police & many others. CONNECTICUT Rep. Diana Urban proposed HB 6310 “An Act Concerning Animal Advocates in Court Proceedings” would permit a veterinarian with the Dept. of Agriculture to be appointed as an advocate for an animal whose welfare or custody is the subject of a civil or criminal court proceeding. HB 6310 would provide an advocate in court for an egregiously injured animal. It would enable an animal’s injury to be identified as a red flag for future violent behavior. PENNSYLVANIA House Bill 2007 & Senate Bill 1231 would mandate cross-reporting of evidence of child and animal abuse when the evidence is observed by public servants; social workers and animal control officers. He has 8 pets – 2 cats, 3 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs & a parrot. (The cats & one rabbit were adopted from AHS in Tinton Falls). He lives with his Mom, Dad & his sister Lexi in Lakewood. Logan really loves animals and nature. He is extremely compassionate; always trying to save bugs, caterpillars, spiders, turtles, and any other critters in need of assistance. He frequently watches nature programming on Animal Planet PHOTO SUPPLIED and National Geographic and he even enjoys nature themed reality shows like River Monsters, The Most Extreme, and Call of the Wildman. He constantly reads animal books and routinely attends Ocean County Parks Department classes and programs after school and on the weekends to help satisfy his enormous curiosity concerning nature and living creatures. When he learned that there were rescued tigers living nearby at the Popcorn Park Zoo, he wanted to do something to help. For the last 3 years, Logan has donated 50% of the birthday money that he received to the tigers at the Popcorn Park Zoo. On his birthday party invitations, each year he has asked for money to donate to the tigers in lieu of birthday gifts. These donations have enabled Logan to sponsor 2 tigers every year since he was in the 1st grade. “FINDING DORY” MOVIE RELEASED JUNE 17th When “Finding Nemo” came out in 2003, the number of sales of clownfish rose by an estimated 40%. However, the blue tang known as Dory in the movie, is a species that does not do well in tanks. “Finding Dory” is a new movie that will increase demand for pet Dorys, prompting collectors to ramp up their efforts. According to Hakai, a marine science magazine, their popularity could lead to large-scale depletion of critical ecosystems, especially around Indonesia and the Philippines where there are no regulations governing fish collection. The researchers are hoping that this sequel will send the message that fish belong in the ocean and not aquariums. Organizations have found that 6 million tropical marine fish imported into the U.S. each year for the pet trade are exposed to cyanide poisoning. A new report entitled “Poison Waters” examines the destructive practice of cyanide poisoning. In the method used with cyanide, as much as 50% of all nearby fish are killed on contact as well as nearby corals. Although it is illegal to import these fish, there is very little to regulate the practice. It appears to be a continually growing trend once the problematic situations are uncovered. The AHS takes steps to socialize each dog before adoption. If you are interested in one of these orphans from hoarding situations, we ask for your patience as we are working with them every day. The day they are adopted will be another milestone for them to adjust to and that may still be of concern. Your donations to our efforts are sincerely appreciated. OVER 275 DOGS RESCUED FROM HOWELL HOARDING HOME These beautiful little ladies lived in a horrendous hoarding situation & are now at Popcorn Park. We are taking the time to socialize them before adoption. If we didn't do this, it would be setting them up to fail. The AHS in Tinton Falls has 10 that are still being cared for. Many had never been outdoors & are now playing in a free-roam area. Tessa before and after AHS Animal Control Officer Luis Mercado was contacted concerning a stray dog in Howell Township. He was in dogged pursuit to find the canine when he approached a house that had paper across the windows, sounds of barking and a foul odor emanating. He knocked on the door but no one responded. The ACO reported the matter to the Monmouth County SPCA and an investigation was launched. The AHS, along with the MC SPCA and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare were involved in the rescue of 276 dogs, one of which was in the midst of giving birth. A production line of checking each dog, giving inoculations and microchipping was started but ran out due to the enormity of the number of animals. The AHS took 31 of the dogs which comprised Chihuahuas, Terriers, Yorkies, Pugs & mixed breeds – frightened, unsocialized, some pregnant, but all in basically good health. Ten of the little dogs were sent to Popcorn Park in Forked River. The MC SPCA filed charges against Charlene & Joseph Handrik. A few of the dogs have given birth at our Tinton Falls facility. Staffers and volunteers have been handling and socializing these anxious little ones in a slow, methodical way. If you are interested in adoption, call AHS at 732-922-0100, e-mail [email protected] or 609-693-1900, or e-mail [email protected] or log on to ahscares.org for updates. UNION BEACH RESIDENT PASSES AWAY WITH 33 CATS IN THE HOME AHS in Tinton Falls took in 33 cats & a week later needed to remove 40 cats from a tenant eviction. All are healthy, altered and waiting for adoption. When a Union Beach resident passed away, he left 33 cats in his home. The AHS in Tinton Falls was called in to remove them from the property. Sadly, there were no friends or relatives that could assist in re-homing any of them. All of the cats had been altered and well cared for. They are now at our Tinton Falls shelter in search of caring families and a lifetime of love and acceptance. These kitties range in age from 2 to 20 HUMANE NEWS August 2016 6 years and are very friendly and social. AHS does not label this as a “hoarding” situation as they had all been well cared for. Pet owners are urged to consider what will happen in the event you are no longer able to care for your pets. Arrangements should be made for such an occurrence. At the very least, you should advise a friend, relative, veterinarian, etc. as to what you desire in the event you are no longer able to care for your pets and what your last wishes would be for your pet. One week after taking in these 33 cats, we had to remove 40 cats from an apartment in Neptune whose owner was evicted. ANIMAL HOARDING HAS BECOME A GROWING PROBLEM Chapter #1 - The AHS was alerted to a hoarding situation in Jackson where several dogs were kept in horrific conditions in a garage without windows or ventilation. The owner started out with a few unaltered dogs and quickly became overwhelmed with multiplication misery. There was no end in sight for these dogs that existed in such filth. With cooperation from the owners, AHS took in four of the 17 poor souls that are less than a year old & completely terrified. The feces had been on them for so long, it had formed dreadlocks, twisted tightly against their skin. The bathing, grooming, and shaving were tolerated by them but they were quite terrified and could barely handle being touched. The biggest challenge is getting them to realize that they have nothing to be afraid of. JACKSON - A TALE OF TWO HOARDING HOMES ... ONE OWNER Pinto, is a 5 month-old German Shepherd pup, that was born and lived in the garage. Huckleberry also lived in the garage and underwent a huge transformation once groomed. These pathetic dogs lied in a garage … without windows or ventilation. Grooming them was a horrific ordeal for the frightened dogs. Chapter #2 – Sadly, the owner of the 17 dogs described above also owned another residence where more dogs were living in even worse conditions. Home Free Animal Rescue took in the 11 dogs and brought 5 of them to AHS/Popcorn Park. Trembling with fear, the dogs panicked after having water and soap touch their bodies. They are even more terrified than the first group as they have been living in solitude and isolation for a longer period of time. They are now clean, fed, and being made as comfortable as possible. Some have been provided with Calming Collars to ease their stress. You will be able to see updates by logging on to Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter Facebook page or log on to ahscares.org where we keep you updated. We would like to thank Home Free Animal Rescue for all of their efforts in rescuing these poor souls from miserable lives. Simon, above, is about 3 years old and lived in the second house in Jackson. Asia, at right, came from the same house. AROUND THE WORLD According to ANIMALS24-7.org, Greyhound Racing New South Wales has brought 179 Australian “industry participants” for allegedly illegally exporting greyhounds to Macau, China. The Australian greyhound racing industry exports hundreds of greyhounds to supply & stimulate racing industries in other countries where most of them will be killed after their racing days. One of the biggest markets is Macau – where the Canidrome racing track does not allow any dogs to be adopted. Qantas Airlines quit transporting greyhounds to all Asian destinations in December 2015 soon after the media questioned the fate of greyhounds who were exported to Macau, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea & the Philippines. INDIA The newly elected government of the northeast Indian state of Assam has launched plans to crack down on the poaching of the area’s one-horned rhinos. The local police have been asked to join the offensive against poaching. Previously, Forest Rangers & Kaziranga National Park antipoaching staff handled this responsibility. MOVING?? Benedetto - N J On behalf of the Associated Humane Societies Board of Directors, staff and volunteers, we wish to acknowledge our fallen brother, Alvis Carrington, who was tragically shot and killed while on duty. We are devastated at this tragic loss. Alvis was a 16 year veteran as an Animal Control Officer with the Associated Humane Societies and a true professional to say the least. Authorities believe that a preliminary investigation suggested the killing was not random. Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura’s Crime Stoppers Program announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information in the fatal shooting. The animals lost a champion, his family lost their rock and his friends lost their mate. Rest in Peace Corporal Carrington. End of watch 5/31/16. The bill has been referred to the Assembly’s Agriculture & Natural Resource Committee. Phoenix & Brimstone of Barnegat Our beautiful and bonded girls Phoenix and Brimstone were hoping for a fabulous home where they could stay together forever. The girls were adopted out briefly but were returned because one was having diarrhea. We are weaning them off of an anti-diarrheal pet food & thyey do use the litterbox faithfully. These darling little ladies are Phoenix and Brimstone, two jazzy little orange tigers that would just love a great home to grow up in. The sisters are only 9 months old and they came to us when they were found as strays, and were just tiny little things. The girls were only a couple of months old at the time and both had terrible colds and spent quite a while in our hospital under medical care. Once they got their clean bills of health, they moved on out into our general area and were hoping to catch the eye of some wonderful person that would offer these sweet siblings a good home. Both girls were terribly shy when they first arrived which is understandable, but in time, they both began to realize that they're in good hands so they settled in and let their hair down; now they're both silly, playful, and very friendly. They're very kittenish and can be seen playing and rolling around together all day. They are both very curious and won't sit still very long without going to check something out. They both love people and don't have much shyness about them any longer; They even seem to be just fine with other cats. Phoenix and Brimstone have been waiting soooo long, we have included them on the Share-A-Pet Program. File#25658 & 25659 Fizzle of Newark Each unwanted or lost soul that arrives through our doors is given the chance to find a family and live a life filled with love & acceptance. Our vigorous adoption program is the mainstay of the efforts at each of our shelters. The attempt to find a wonderful life for a Society orphan is quite a challenge and sometimes more difficult than anticipated. This handsome neutered gent was found as a stray with no identity either by tags or microchip. When the staff reported excessive drinking and urination, he was transferred to our Medical Dept. for a further check-up. "Fizzle" was found to have a kidney condition which can be managed ... but not reversed. A prescription diet, phosphorus binders (a medication typically used with chronic kidney problems) and monitoring Fizzle's health is a management plan to give him several years of happiness and well being. He was brought to the AHS in Tinton Falls for a change of scenery, and dog walkers, volunteers and staff who will give the 4 year-old neutered boy a chance at happiness. Fizzle met with our veterinarian, Dr. Emily Marion who did some labwork and the results indicates his numbers are relatively low and his phosphorous is normal … which is good. We have included Fizzle on the Share-A-Pet Program in the event there is a Florence Nightingale in our readership who will give him whatever time he has left to live in comfort. For more information, call 732-922-0100 or e-mail [email protected] and ask about Fizzle.
