Kidron Bethel VILLAGE 2009 ANNUAL REPORT Values in Action Our Mission Kidron Bethel Village is a progressive retirement community that provides residential choices and offers personalized services with Christian compassion. Voth, Vice Chair Paul Harder, Treasurer Orlyn Zehr, Secretary Joan Brubacher John Buckner Connie Claassen Bernice Esau Lester Ewy Jim Goering Tony Graber Greg Hinz Jim Nickel Don Schmidt Pam Schmidt John Sommer Omar Voran J. Wendell Wiens ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.’ ~ Matthew 5:16 Cindy Vanover The theme of our Annual Report this year is “values in action.” What are values? Values are the principles we hold and stand by when making decisions. Organizations, like individuals, have values. Those values are the essence of the corporate personality or corporate culture, whether in a church, a nation, a workplace or a retirement community. Values words are thrown about a great deal in our society, but what we truly value we act upon. Our true values, as individuals and as communities, are the values we demonstrate through behaviors. Core values not only create a shared story – a shared vision for the future, a shared understanding to act upon – core values also must serve as important guidance for strategic decisions, including where to invest resources for improvement, how to better serve residents and attract qualified staff, and how to communicate effectively within the organization. At Kidron Bethel, our mission is to serve as a progressive retirement community that provides residential choices and personalized services with Christian compassion. That mission gives guidance and inspiration. It describes the “what” of Kidron. Our core values describe the “how.” Our 2009 Annual Report describes how Kidron Bethel uses its core values -Compassion, Community, Choice and Commitment – to make decisions in a very visible way, every day. You will read about those values in action throughout this Annual Report -- in our Independent Living, our Assisted Living and our Health Care Center neighborhoods. As someone who cares about Kidron Bethel, you, too, are an important part of our values in action. As donors, residents, supporting congregations, volunteers, community members and staff, you make a difference. You reach out and touch lives here in important ways through your gifts, your time and your love. You provide residents with comfort and security because they know you will be there; they know you care for them and about them. Without you we would not be the outstanding retirement community we are. Kidron Bethel is a ministry, and you are a conduit of God’s love here each and every day. I feel most blessed to have been called to serve here and I am grateful for all the gracious hospitality you have offered me during this transition. I thank God for all of the residents, volunteers, families and staff who have demonstrated our values every day this past year through their commitment to this wonderful community. Cindy Vanover President/CEO 2 Kidron Inc. receives HUD capital improvement grant A team of workers from The Professional Side, Newton, installs new, energy-efficient sliding glass doors and windows in Kidron Inc. apartments. Kidron Inc. recently received a major grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for capital improvements to Kidron Inc. Roofs are being replaced on the main building as well as the fourplexes on the south side of Bluestem Street. In addition, new windows and sliding-glass doors are being installed in each residence. Fifty-one of the 55 Kidron Inc. apartments are receiving new, energy-efficient furnace and air-conditioning units. Local contractors expect to complete the project by fall. Those helping to procure the grant include Director of Independent Living and Marketing Marilyn King, who authored the request; Vice President of Finance Scott Whitley; Director of the Physical Plant David McBeth; Accountant LuAnn McMannis; and Community Life Coordinator Susan Almond. Kidron wins KAHSA consumer education award Kidron Bethel Village, Asbury Park, Kansas Christian Home and Presbyterian Manor of Newton received the 2009 Excellence in Consumer Education Award from the Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging as part of its Quality First Awards of Excellence program. The group was honored for its unique marketing, showcasing the city of Newton as a great place to retire. Marketing directors from the four retirement communities collaborated with other organizations to sponsor the Discover Life After 55 Expo, advertisements and other activities. No other community in Kansas comes together in this unique fashion to promote itself as a great place to retire. Marilyn King, Kidron’s Director of Independent Living and Marketing, is a founding member of the group. 3 Cindy Vanover CEO Meet the CEO ‘I look forward to being a part of the continued success of one of the recognized leaders in long-term care.’ Cindy Vanover CEO Cindy Vanover of The Woodlands, Texas, is the new president and chief executive officer of Kidron Bethel Retirement Services Inc. According to Mennonite Health Service CEO search committee members, Vanover’s strengths will allow her to “create processes and accountability to ensure strong operational performance” at Kidron Bethel. Vanover formerly was at The Methodist Hospital System in Houston, Texas, and previously served in numerous executive roles in the areas of healthcare, education and children’s services. “I’m so blessed to have the opportunity to serve such an important ministry,” Vanover said. “This is a wonderful community with a dedicated board, involved residents and caring staff. I care deeply about the work that we do and I do not take this responsibility lightly.” She holds a master’s degree and speaks internationally on values and corporate culture in business. According to Mim Shirk, vice president of Mennonite Health Services Alliance, Vanover’s presentation on integrating values into organizational culture during the group’s 2007 assembly “sparked a major initiative for us.” Prior to her involvement in corporate culture and values, Vanover worked for more than two decades in public relations, fund-raising and administration. A Montana native, she has three adult children. Vanover assumed her duties in April at Kidron. She replaced interim president and CEO LeRoy Weddle of McPherson, who had been at the helm since Sept. 29, 2008. Recognizing Outstanding Commitment Kidron Bethel Village hosted its annual employee appreciation reception in January. Among those recognized for years of service was Paula Padilla, CMA, who was named a Kidron Ambassador for her 10 years at the Village. CMA Raylene Lane was named Caregiver of the Year, and Maintenance Technician Bryan Becker was named Support Employee of the Year. Other employees were recognized for completing career-advancement education. PLEASURE ~ PURPOSE ~ PEACE K idron Bethel Village recently hosted staff training sessions facilitating therapeutic small-group activities for people with memory impairment. The sessions were led by nationally recognized educator and consultant Erin Bonitto of Gemini Consulting. “Involving people with dementia in therapeutic smallgroup activities offers a compassionate way to deliver genuine pleasure, purpose and peace,” said Bonitto. Therapeutic small groups are driven by a pre-selected theme featuring “kits” made up of dozens of props. Each prop is carefully chosen to cue parts of the brain that still “work” but may be buried beneath severe language difficulties. In addition, the threedimensional props relate to all senses, From left, Margaret Smith, Margaret Treible and Martha Hiebert enjoy a session about allowing them backyard birds. Activities Director Beth to be looked at, Penner, right, leads the group. held, used and experienced. Trained staff facilitators use a variety of nonverbal and verbal techniques to carefully draw out deeply stored, long-term memory. Special techniques also are used to create a genuine connection between the residents. Bonitto provided training for Kidron Bethel staff members who will facilitate the program. During therapy sessions, residents are encouraged to interact with each other, make choices and share their thoughts with the group. A small-group training session focusing on a beach theme featured props, including bathing suits, beach hats and towels and decorated sunglasses. Participants in the group were encouraged to choose their favorites from the assortment of props, and each dug their fingers into beach sand to extract a buried shell. Holding their choices from a basket of “keeper” seashells, residents then shared their memories of visits to the beach and playing with their children. “What would you do with this sand if we really were on the beach?” Bonitto asked. “I’d dig in way down,” replied a resident. “I’d look for jewels.” “I’d dig in with my hands,” said another participant. “Toes would be better,” added a third, giggling as she spoke. One resident modeled a pair of oversized pink and blue butterfly sunglasses sprinkled with gold flecks, and chose a bright, multicolored swimsuit for her “trip” to the beach. She soon traded them for sunglasses shaped like pineapples and a hot pink one-piece swimsuit. The session ended with residents holding hands and singing a song. herapeutic small-group activities training at Kidron Bethel follows the successful implementation in 2007 of Bonitto’s Alzheimer’s lounge concept. The lounge program is ongoing at Kidron Bethel and involves strength-based stations, with residents pursuing an activity appropriate for their abilities and interests. Each station features authentic props and activity supplies known to be engaging for residents with dementia. “Allowing a resident to touch, smell and experience common objects such as dirt, flower bulbs and watering cans can help unlock the gateway to precious memories,” explained Bethel Health Care Centre Activities Director Beth Penner. “We will be expanding our ‘kits’ to include weddings, fishing and other areas of interest, to help residents remember more of the happiest times in their lives. “This program is a gift that allows us to help our residents recover their ‘lost’ memories,” Penner added. “They deserve these moments of pleasure that they might not receive in typical large-group activities.” Bonitto will present a workshop, “Alzheimer’s Lounge: Interdisciplinary Program for the Real World,” this summer at the International Association of Homes and Services for the Aging conference in London, England. Kidron Bethel is one of a sample of 13 locations in the United States to implement the Alzheimer’s lounge program and then provide survey results related to outcomes. The results of those surveys will be included in Bonitto’s presentation at the London conference. “Kidron Bethel is the only provider in the state of Kansas to invest in ongoing training, coaching and development of Life Enrichment Systems for Dementia,” Bonitto explained. “The community is blessed to have this caliber of dementia expertise. I’m thrilled to be sharing Kidron Bethel’s successes with an international audience in London.” “The lounge and therapeutic small groups programs are more than just activities on our weekly calendars,” said Bethel Health Care Administrator Leigh Peck. “Each program is designed to enhance quality of life by bringing moments of true peace, pleasure and purpose to our residents with dementia. The sensory stimulation of using props helps residents express memories that staff and family members may not have heard in years.” T 5 Community News Moyer named outstanding Bethel alum Kidron Bethel Bell Choir presents concerts at Christmas and Easter. COMPASSION... Sharing from the Heart Six years ago, I met Isaac and his four children in their home on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean. Isaac recounted the experience of losing his wife, a daughter and their home in a mudslide following torrential rains less than a year earlier. Isaac’s family was like thousands of others who lost life or property without warning in the dark of night. Often during those weeks of visiting families, hearing their stories and helping to rebuild their homes, I was overcome with a feeling of compassion. Jesus, in the Gospel of Mark 8:2, said as he looked over the crowd following him, “I have compassion for these people....” Jesus has touched our hearts to respond to human need as well. The Kidron Bethel theme this past year was Compassion: The Heart of Our Mission. Reflecting on our experience, I recall witnessing the miracles of caring and sharing taking place routinely on our campus. A resident comforts his grieving neighbor after the tragic loss of a spouse. Sisters who lived long, productive lives share a substantial gift through a bequest upon their deaths. A resident of very modest means shares a thoughtful and very meaningful gift. A single-mom staff member shares a monetary gift that no doubt could have been used in many other ways. A resident survives a tragic accident with the emotional support of many. An anonymous donor makes a gift of $10,000. A dear couple volunteers their time to support the caring ministry of Kidron Bethel. These gifts, whether monetary or otherwise supportive, were shared from a heart of compassion. Each of these gifts touches the very heart of God! They also touch mine. Sharing these gifts implies a deep trust that has been placed in the people who administer the organization, who direct the programs, and most of all, with those who lovingly care for the needs of your loved ones from day to day. Sharing these gifts also acknowledges a trust that says, “I can make a difference at Kidron Bethel Village!” Your prayer and financial support this past year has been humbling. While the economic crisis swirls around us, we are encouraged by the many donors who have chosen to walk the path together with the employees of Kidron Bethel. Because of your partnership with us, our residents continue to receive the loving care that comes from sharing hearts. Thank you for your gift of compassion. It is a gift to many!
