The RAIN Transitional Living Center has provided housing and services to local families and single adults to help with the transition from homelessness to permanent housing. Serving up to 70 people at a time, half of which are children, RAIN provides nutritious meals, intensive case management services, employment assistance, life skills for adults and parents on topics such as money management, parenting, and also enrichment programs for children. RAIN is operated by the County of Ventura Human Services Agency along with RAIN Communities, Inc. Together they have helped to effectively break the cycle of homelessness for many individuals and families with the county. 95 cents of every dollar in contributions go directly to program services. To find out more about the RAIN Transitional Living Center, please visit their website at www.raincommunities.org. Page Three September 18, 2016 Dearest Parishioners, I do hope so far that we are all inspired to yearn for holiness and heaven as we reflect and know our saints and feasts this September. I would like to quote some foundational verses from Scriptures about our belief in the “communion of saints”. …. when he comes to be glorified among his holy ones and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, for our testimony to you was believed. (2 Thessalonians 1:10) For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (Romans 8:29) Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure. (1 John 3:2-3) Then one of the elders spoke up and said to me, “Who are these wearing white robes, and where did they come from?” I said to him, “My lord, you are the one who knows.” He said to me, “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.” (Revelation 9:13-14) The Catechism of the Catholic Church #947 teaches us: Since all the faithful form one body, the good of each is communicated to the others.... We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the Church. But the most important member is Christ, since he is the head.... Therefore, the riches of Christ are communicated to all the members, through the sacraments” (St. Thomas Aquinas). As this Church is governed by one and the same Spirit, all the goods she has received necessarily become a common fund (Roman Catechism I). This September 23rd, we celebrate the FEAST OF PADRE PIO OF PIETRELCINA, who is one of our recently known canonized saints. ~Fr. Adrian The following information is from americancatholic.org. WHO IS PADRE PIO? Born Francesco Forgione, Padre Pio grew up in a family of farmers in southern Italy. Twice (1898-1903 and 1910-17) his father worked in Jamaica, New York, to provide the family income. At the age of 15, Francesco joined the Capuchins and took the name of Pio. He was ordained in 1910 and was drafted during World War I. After he was discovered to have tuberculosis, he was discharged. In 1917 he was assigned to the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo, 75 miles from the city of Bari on the Adriatic. On September 20, 1918, as he was making his thanksgiving after Mass, Padre Pio had a vision of Jesus. When the vision ended, he had the stigmata in his hands, feet and side. Life became more complicated after that. Medical doctors, Church authorities and curiosity seekers came to see Padre Pio. In 1924 and again in 1931, the authenticity of the stigmata was questioned. Padre Pio was not permitted to celebrate Mass publicly or to hear confessions. He did not complain of these decisions, which were soon reversed. However, he wrote no letters after 1924. His only other writing, a pamphlet on the agony of Jesus, was done before 1924. Padre Pio rarely left the friary after he received the stigmata, but busloads of people soon began coming to see him. Each morning after a 5 a.m. Mass in a crowded church, he heard confessions until noon. He took a mid-morning break to bless the sick and all who came to see him. Every afternoon he also heard confessions. In time his confessional ministry would take 10 hours a day. Penitents had to take a number so that the situation could be handled. Many of them have said that Padre Pio knew details of their lives that they had never mentioned. Page Six St. Peter Claver God . . . wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. ~ 1 Timothy 2:4 "Catechesis" comes from a Greek word meaning "to echo." It challenges all of us to develop a Catholic identity modeled on Jesus. We learn this from those who handed down that faith to us. We echo that back by the living example of our lives. Catechesis is handing down that tradition to others, hoping they can echo that back in their own lives. The presumption is that we do have something to hand on; this calls each of us to grow in faith and knowledge, and to share that with others. The mission of the church reflects the mission of Jesus to teach, preach, heal, and forgive. The task of handing on the Gospel is entrusted to the whole community who, by word and example, form young and new members in the way of the Gospel. This ministry reminds the church that preaching the Gospel and growing in faith are essential to our sacramental practice and our liturgical prayer. On this Sunday, each of us is called to renew our own commitment to grow in faith and knowledge, taking seriously our mission together as the pilgrim people of God. Whether or not we literally teach, all of us are teachers in the way we live. What are we echoing? “Today I ask you in the name of Christ and the Church, never tire of being merciful.” ~ Pope Francis, The Church of Mercy Please pray for the health of… Arlen Handberg; Allan Fitzsimmons; Joni Bunker; Robert McConnell; Diane Calabro; Jeremy Langlois; Nino Paolo Lorezco; Aina Ocampo; Finina Christeph Ocampo; Khloe Christielle Ocampo; Aileen Martinez; Mischelle Champeau; (child) Hazel Hammersley; (infant) John-Gabriel Bergeron; Mary Monesi; Mark Clausen; Aaliyah Guzman; Therese Thibault; Roy Rocco; Manuel Sierro; Carla Maria Molina; Marilyn Binggeli; Dave Morley; Sherri Egan; Jamie Rosen; Frank Barbera; Santiago Augustine Fernandez; Barbara Kurata; Marie Fardig; Mary Jane Wickman; LaVonne Emerson; Jo King; James Yncera; Charles Leo; Darlene Baumgartner; Sheana Green; Joe Trematore; Deann Glynn; Dan Lang; Don Karl; Jack Scroggins; Joe Ortega; Dan Boland; Catherine Capaldi; Craig Turner; Gregg Cassity; Alice Ridge; Virginia Dalcoe; Vera Barker; Chris Bordeleau; Bruce Vandelinder; Susan Womack; Helene ParlmsJackson; Maria Lozano; Carolyn Currie; Chelsea White; Mary Smart; Mimi McGilvray; Rick Schuler; Elaine Swieca; Bill Waters; Marge Porterfield; Aaron Byron; Bob Bower; Jacqueline Sylvestre; Kittie Fidermutz; Martina Peters; Dillon Tunney; Barbara Pogorzelski; Heidi Frie; Sherry Estrella; Chase Dobson; Loretta Payne; Barbara Knight; Suzanne Shaefer. Page Seven St. Peter Claver Padre Pio saw Jesus in all the sick and suffering. At his urging, a fine hospital was built on nearby Mount Gargano. The idea arose in 1940; a committee began to collect money. Ground was broken in 1946. Building the hospital was a technical wonder because of the difficulty of getting water there and of hauling up the building supplies. This “House for the Alleviation of Suffering” has 350 beds. A number of people have reported cures they believe were received through the intercession of Padre Pio. Those who assisted at his Masses came away edified; several curiosity seekers were deeply moved. Like St. Francis, Padre Pio sometimes had his habit torn or cut by souvenir hunters. One of Padre Pio’s sufferings was that unscrupulous people several times circulated prophecies that they claimed originated from him. He never made prophecies about world events and never gave an opinion on matters that he felt belonged to Church authorities to decide. He died on September 23, 1968, and was beatified in 1999. Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. REFLECTION At Padre Pio’s canonization Mass in 2002, Saint John Paul II referred to that day’s Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30) and said: “The Gospel image of ‘yoke’ evokes the many trials that the humble Capuchin of San Giovanni Rotondo endured. Today we contemplate in him how sweet is the ‘yoke’ of Christ and indeed how light the burdens are whenever someone carries these with faithful love. The life and mission of Padre Pio testify that difficulties and sorrows, if accepted with love, transform themselves into a privileged journey of holiness, which opens the person toward a greater good, known only to the Lord.” QUOTE “The life of a Christian is nothing but a perpetual struggle against self; there is no flowering of the soul to the beauty of its perfection except at the price of pain.” (Padre Pio) Saint Peter Claver Preschool and Kindergarten's Parent Advisory Board members have invited Jennifer White to come on Tuesday, September 20th at 7pm in the Parish Center, and speak to families about how to make healthy lunches for children! Come join us and learn about lunch making and fun ideas to keep kids healthy! Page Eight St. Peter Claver To promote a spirit of belonging, we encourage all who worship here to become registered parishioners. Being registered makes the process much easier when it is me for infant bap sm, school or religious educa on enrollment, weddings, when asked to be a bap smal or confirma on sponsor, and funerals. Simply a ending Mass here or making your sacraments here does not make you a registered parishioner. You will find registra on forms at the church doors, or you may pick one up at the parish office. Completed forms may be put in the collec on basket at Mass or dropped off at the parish office. Also, please contact the parish office if you have a new address or phone number. The staff is able to serve you be er if the parish records are current. The Archdiocese requires that anyone active in parish ministries and/or school activities be VIRTUS trained by attending a Safeguard the Children training session. This allows all of us to tend to our children and attend to the environment with better educated eyes and hearts. The next opportunities here at St. Peter Claver are: VIRTUS training classes – Saturday, October 8th, beginning at 9am Our Knights of Columbus are having their 5th annual charity golf tournament on Wednesday, November 2nd, at Moorpark Country Club. For more information you can visit the website at www.9410charitygolf.com or call Rick Lepore at (805) 218-5703. Proceeds from our golf tournament will benefit various charities in Ventura County, and our own St. Peter Claver Preschool and Kindergarten! For more information or to make an appointment, please call Mary at the parish office at 526-6499. There will be a REQUIRED meeting/pizza party on Friday, October 7th 2016, at 6pm in the West Hall, for all current altar servers and those wishing to become an altar server. There will be a pizza dinner and a brief meeting for all servers. Also, new Commitment Forms will be completed in order to serve the 2016-2017 year. At least one parent from each family must attend. For those wishing to become an altar server, there will also be sign-ups for altar server training. All boys and girls of St. Peter Claver Parish, grades 5-12, interested in serving as an altar server are welcome. If you have any questions, please call Brian or Lisa Kane at 583-0466. Walking with Purpose women’s Bible Study will have its Kick-off on Wednesday September 28th. If you have signed up for this Bible Study, or are considering joining but are not sure at this time, please join us on September 28th. You will learn more about this fresh and relevant Catholic Scripture-based program for women. Please come for socialization, refreshments and a video overview of our program. The Kick-off will be held in the Parish Center on September 28th at 7:30pm in Rooms 1 & 2. Please call Sherry Kimmet at (805) 581-2742 if you plan to attend. Rosa Lazalde and I are looking forward to seeing you there. LIVE THE LITURGY - The prophets always challenge us to see as God sees. It is as important to put as much time and effort into the matters of God as it is into matters of self-interest and personal affairs. We cannot serve two masters and when we choose to serve God we also realize that we must serve the needs of others, especially the poorest and most in need. Page Nine St. Peter Claver Time flies - it’s already time to start thinking about Christmas! Plan ahead to attend this year’s Holiday Boutique on November 5th & 6th. Each year, your donations of new gift items have helped make our parish table a huge success - and we’re asking for your help again this year. If you have any new gift items you wish to donate, you may bring them to the parish office; please note that the drop-off hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9am-12(noon) and 1-5pm. Also, it’s not too late to donate gift cards! We still need gifts cards in any dollar amount for your favorite stores, restaurants or on-line stores such as iTunes or Amazon, to create raffle prize s for the Boutique. You can drop them off at the parish office, or mark them “Holiday Boutique” and put them in the collection basket at Mass. La Reina cordially invites the entire community to join us on September 25th as we celebrate the Sisters of Notre Dame and their dedication to Catholic education. On this special day, we will dedicate our newly modernized 100s building, Sisters of Notre Dame Hall, at 3pm. Tours, hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be ongoing throughout the afternoon from 2-4pm. Don't miss this historic occasion; please stop by the school located at 106 West Janss Road, Thousand Oaks. Kindly RSVP at: www.lareina.com/SNDHall.
