Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Pro Cathedral Founded September 1, 1772 Mass Schedule Saturday: 7:00 am, and 5:30 pm Vigil Sunday:: English Sunday English:: 7:00 am, 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 6:00 pm Spanish: 12:30 pm and 7:30 pm Weekdays:: 7:00 am and 12:10 pm Weekdays Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturday:: 4:00 - 4:30 pm Saturday First Sunday of Lent • February 14, 2016 J ubilee Year of Mercy February 14, 2016 • First Sunday of Lent On Ash Wednesday Pope Francis commissioned “Missionaries of Mercy,” priest-confessors sent forth worldwide as “living signs of the Father’s readiness to welcome those in search of [God’s] pardon.” In a way, though, Pope Francis challenges all of us to become “missionaries of mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 18) by living Lent in this Jubilee Year of Mercy “more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy” (MV, 17). Francis bids us make the prophet Micah’s words our own: “God . . . who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency. You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins” (Micah 7:18, 19). Having experienced God’s mercy ourselves in the unconditional forgiveness of our sins, how eager we should be to invite others to know the peace of God’s boundless mercy; perhaps even to experience, through our reaching out in gentle kindness and compassionate care, something of God’s unconditional love for them. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. PAGE 3 R EFLECTION OF THE WEEK February 14, 2016 First Sunday of Lent Each year, at the beginning of Lent, the lectionary has us hear the story of the devil tempting Jesus in the desert. This year we hear Luke’s version. Following his baptism, Jesus went out into the desert for forty days during which time he ate nothing. Knowing that Jesus would be hungry, the devil tempted him to turn a stone into bread. When Jesus did not, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the earth, promising Jesus all the glory and power of them if Jesus would worship the devil. Again Jesus refused. Finally, Satan took Jesus to the top of the temple in Jerusalem and told him to jump because God’s angels would save him. Jesus refused each of the three temptations by quoting scripture from the book of Deuteronomy thus making clear his obedience to God. Listen and remember through Word and Bread Sun, 2/14: Dt 26:4-10; Ps 91:1-2, 10-15; Rom 10:8-13; Lk 4:1-13 Mon, 2/15: Lv 19:1-2, 11-18; Ps 19:8-10, 15; Mt 25:31-46 Tue, 2/16: Is 55:10-11; Ps 34:4-7, 16-19; Mt 6:7-15 Wed, 2/17: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19; Lk 11:29-32 Thur, 2/18: Est C:12,14-16,23-25; Ps 138:1-3,7c-8; Mt 7:7-12 Fri, 2/19: Ez 18:21-28; Ps 130:1-8; Mt 5:20-26 Sat, 2/20: Dt 26:16-19; Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8; Mt 5:43-48 Sun, 2/21: Gn 15:5-12,17-18; Ps 27:1, 7-9, 13-14; Phil 3:17 — 4:1; Lk 9:28b-36 Confused Catholic? Inactive Catholic? Alienated Catholic? An Invitation to Consider COMING HOME AGAIN Reflection question: Adults: How willing are you to profess your faith in Jesus Christ openly to others? Children: Would you still be able to say that you believe in Jesus if others made fun of you for it? (We’ve missed you.) If you’ve been away from the church, or are drifting away from it, if you’ve been hurt by the church, or are confused or angry because of your Catholic experience, please consider our invitation to come and talk with us. If you are an active Catholic who would like to assist with this ministry, we welcome your help. Social Justice Ministry Meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm in the Serra Center. Join us to learn what our new projects are, and what you can do to help. Many blessings and love to all our wonderful parishioners on Valentine’s Day! The February meeting of the Social Justice Ministry was a busy one as we welcomed several guests and solidified our planning for the upcoming 6-week study group. It will kick off this Tuesday, Feb. 16, in the Youth Center, with a soup supper at 5:30 (bring your own bowl & spoon) and a guided discussion group on “Be Merciful -- Reflections on the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy” from 6:00 to 7:00. All parishioners are most welcome to join us as we follow Pope Francis in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We also reflected on the recent Ice Cream Social we hosted at the Overflow Shelter -- a joyous (and delicious) event, made more so by the array of warm winter wear which has been so generously donated by parishioners. Our guests had a wonderful time trying on hats and scarves and were very appreciative of having some warm clothing for this cold and wet season. Rita’s Rainbows sent a heartfelt “thank you” for the very generous Social Justice second collection in November. “With your generosity, you have helped us help so many children and spread so many smiles, all in the name of our daughter, Rita. We know that none of it would be possible without the support of people like you. We are grateful beyond words.” “When he calls to me, I will answer.” Entrance Antiphon for the First Sunday of Lent. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
