Access to Life`s Opportunities - Al Sigl Community of Agencies
broadcast Summer 2015 Achieving More Together CP Rochester Epilepsy-Pralid, Inc. Medical Motor Service National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upstate New York Chapter Rochester Hearing and Speech Center Rochester Rehabilitation Access to Life’s Opportunities Rochester Institute of Technology engineering students Adam Podolec and Crystal Mendoza spent Rick talks with Crystal and Adam about a body eight weeks cooling device for people with MS this spring visiting each of Al Sigl’s six Member Agencies and campus neighbors to talk with clients and observe different programs. Kicking off a full-time co-op internship that will last through year-end, these visits sparked a wide-ranging list of ideas for future Effective Access Technology projects. Conversations during a visit to one of Epilepsy-Pralid’s residential programs led to a brainstorming session about the design challenges in creating a walker-wheelchair hybrid. A visit to Rochester Hearing & Speech Center’s motor therapy room for toddlers learning muscle control inspired the idea for a LED “smart” rug to help guide little feet across the room. Talking with people taking part in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s educational and recreational programs resulted in sketches for a cane that can help someone who has difficulty lifting their feet when they walk. Student teams have already begun work on several of these projects, with additional teams tackling more this fall. Adam and Crystal’s ongoing co-op experience is part of Al Sigl’s growing partnership with RIT to promote Effective Access Technology. The key element of the initiative is reflected in the word “effective.” Dr. Dan Phillips, institute champion for the initiative and Department Head of Biomedical Engineering at RIT, says that application of technology can produce some amazing devices, but “if the end result is not affordable or acceptable for the person who needs it for everyday use, it’s not really effective.” Dr. Phillips continues, “Things like a better walker, or a switch on a wheelchair that prevents it from rolling back when a person needs to stop while going uphill, those are much more effective, in terms of real-world solutions.” The bottom line, he emphasizes, “is to produce something that can enhance access to the full range of life’s opportunities for an individual with an impairment or challenge that might otherwise be inaccessible.” — Continued on page 6 “The synergy we’ve created with Al Sigl Community of Agencies is really incredible. Al Sigl is a wonderful community partner in supporting our efforts to develop effective access technologies. Our students and faculty are working closely with Al Sigl’s Member Agencies and clients to move the ball forward in providing greater access for people of all abilities.” —Ryne Raffaelle RIT’s Vice President for Research and Associate Provost This issue of broadcast is generously underwritten by: Independent Senior Living www.LegacyRochester.com Howdy Neighbors We welcome new faces and new strength to our work together at Al Sigl. A warm welcome to Rochester Hearing and Speech Center’s Interim President, Mary Balme and three cheers to CP Rochester’s CEO, Mary Walsh Boatfield, for taking on additional responsibilities as President at Rochester Rehabilitation. We are honored to work with you to achieve more together. Rod Koziatek Stacey Wallenhorst David Walbaum Sharing Her Story Jane is an accomplished author. Two of her books have already been published and a third is in progress. Her first book, Just Like You, is comprised of over one hundred journal entries. Asked why she decided to publish her journal, Jane says, “I wanted other people to know that my life with cerebral palsy did not make me different inside.” Jane also visits local schools to talk about celebrating abilities and inclusion. Each October, Jane and her sisters take part in the Al Sigl Community WalkAbout to help raise funds for CP Rochester, where Jane has received services for 54 years. She takes part in the Day Habilitation program, enjoys working with the therapists in the Clinic each week, and lives in one of the agency’s five residential homes. To learn more about CP Rochester’s many programs, please visit CPRochester.org. Stephanie Lesko We wish Chief Financial Officer Rod Koziatek a happy retirement after his 17 years of service helping to shape and strengthen our collaborative model. Thanks to Rod, we are stronger financially and well prepared for the future success of our collaboration. Stacey Wallenhorst, who worked alongside Rod for many years as Finance Manager, is our new CFO. We also recently welcomed David Walbaum as Foundation Vice President and Stephanie Lesko as Director of Fundraising Events and Volunteer Engagement. With such an accomplished team, we look forward to the days ahead with confidence. This spring, the Al Sigl family was saddened by the loss of a longtime friend, Harold Augustin. A loving father to Skip and husband to June, Harold dedicated his life to creating opportunities for children of all abilities. The CP Rochester Augustin Children’s Center, where children with and without special needs learn and grow together, is named in honor of the Augustins’ generosity. Harold brought energy and enthusiasm to his role as a smiling champion for inclusion. Just one week before his passing, he visited the playground at CP Rochester for the dedication of a new zip line to help children of all abilities soar. He was surrounded by staff and families who shared how Augustin Children’s Center’s inclusive setting has already helped their child’s future take flight. Thank you for helping to lift up our work together and for celebrating abilities and inclusion with us. Peace 2 Two Campers, a Lifetime of Memories For Carrie, Camp EAGR, Epilepsy-Pralid’s overnight camp for kids with epilepsy and their siblings, “is the best place on Earth.” Carrie often felt scared and alone when she was younger because she was afraid of her seizures. “Camp EAGR enabled me to be comfortable in my own skin,” Carrie says. “Now, as a counselor, I get to watch children come to camp as a ‘new kid’ and leave as family.” For Marissa, who is the only person in her family with epilepsy, “I was very excited to get to know others who share this in common with me.” Marissa says, “Camp is a great place to come and have fun for a week, and not feel different.” She continues, “The friendships I’ve made at Camp EAGR are very special to me.” Stories like Carrie’s and Marissa’s show how Camp EAGR helps kids of all ages build confidence, friendships, and meaningful memories. Partners In Care Medical Motor Service transports nearly 70% of the children who attend Daystar, a day-respite program serving children with special healthcare needs. Many families served do not have access to personal transportation, and public transportation is not an option, as the children taking part in the program require ongoing nursing support. As a result, Medical Motor Service helped Daystar provide care to 56 medically fragile infants, toddlers, and preschoolers living in 14 different school districts just last year. As Daystar’s Executive Director Kim Condon shares, “We are so grateful to be able to count on Medical Motors as our partner.” She continues, “It’s a great benefit for our children, their families, and our staff, to know that they can count on the same familiar drivers each day. Without their invaluable commitment to our families, children across our community would remain in isolation in their illness.” To learn more, please visit MedicalMotors.org. Better Hearing Builds Social Confidence Theresa was always being teased because of how she would focus on people’s faces when they spoke. Theresa, who began experiencing hearing loss at the age of 15, had grown accustomed to watching people’s lips to follow conversations. For this reason, Theresa, a working mom with a young family, often found social situations difficult. Her doctor suggested a hearing evaluation and Theresa was soon diagnosed with significant conductive hearing loss. She reached out to Rochester Hearing and Speech Center for help. With the aid of bilaterial hearing aids, Theresa couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Am I supposed to hear that?” became a steady refrain as she asked those around to help her identify sounds she was hearing for the first time, like the hum of the refrigerator or geese flying overhead. Of all these new sounds, her favorites, she says, “are the whispers of my kids.” To learn more about services like those Theresa received, please visit RHSC.org. Perseverance an Inspiration for Others Recovery is a topic that Matt knows very well. Just over two years ago, Matt was in and out of the hospital, battling severe psychiatric illness and unable to live on his own. Through hard work, and with the help of the caring staff at Rochester Rehabilitation’s Mental Health Center, including nurse Beth Caton-Burm, Matt now attends classes at SUNY Brockport. He was recently accepted into the Social Work program after completing his degree program at MCC with high honors. He lives in an apartment and stays active in the community. “Matt’s story,” says Beth, “is a great example of perseverance, determination, and the good our staff can do in the lives of those invested in their own recovery.” Matt is especially proud of his transition. “I want to be able to live my own life like everyone else.” he says. For more information about Rochester Rehabilitation’s Mental Health Center, please call 585.271.2520 or visit rochesterrehab.org. Rewards of the Ride Michelle was not sure what she was getting herself into when she let her best friend talk her into registering for the 30-mile ride at last summer’s Bike MS. For Michelle, who had not been on a bicycle since eighth grade, training became a new way to connect with her 12-year-old daughter Rylie. “My daughter thought it was great that I had a bike, so she and I would ride around the neighborhood at night after work.” As the day of the event neared, Michelle says she was petrified. After finishing the ride, her mood changed. “I felt so accomplished,” she says. “Now my daughter and I ride all the time together. It made me want to get involved not only so I could help raise money but I could also help others enjoy riding as well.” To learn more or register for an event near you, please visit BikeMS.org. WELCOME Mary Balme Mary Walsh Boatfield RHSC welcomed Interim President Mary Balme at Time To Shine, the agency’s annual celebration held in May. This March, Mary Walsh Boatfield assumed the role of CEO of Rochester Rehabilitation as part of a collaborative executive staffing agreement. Mary also serves as CEO of Happiness House and President at CP Rochester. 3 Bright Lights Paul Walker Top Tennis Coach Visits Sports Classic Early June marked a new high for the Democrat and Chronicle Al Sigl Sports Classic as Paul Walker, Head Coach for the US Women’s Wheelchair Tennis team and a top-rated player, demonstrated his considerable skills and winning personality on and off the court at the Tennis Benefit on June 7th at Midtown Athletic Club, sponsored by Joe Eduardo, Randy Schuster, and Centra Financial Group. On Sunday, October 25, friends from each of our six Member Agencies will fill Eastview Mall, celebrating friendships old and new. Last year, Jessica Patterson, a former Miss Wheelchair New York dressed for the Halloween-themed event as Princess Jasmine, and stopped to say hello to another princess, five-year old Grace. Grace attends CP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center. The pair admired each other’s dresses during the costume contest, as pirates, robots, mummies and more were cheered on by the crowd. WalkAbout is Al Sigl’s largest fundraising event each year. Funds raised benefit Al Sigl Member Agencies serving tens of thousands in our community. Adult registration is $20; children participate for free with a parent or other adult registrant. All registered walkers and rollers receive a t-shirt and breakfast and enjoy family-friendly entertainment throughout the mall. To register, visit crowdrise.com/2015WalkAbout. For Sarah Greive, pictured left with her daughter, finding time to volunteer can be difficult but also offers many rewards. “You’re not only helping someone else, you’re also helping yourself, ”she says, “My first year as a team leader was the first time I’d done anything like that since the jump-a-thon in grade school! It felt really good to know I was making a difference.” For Sarah, who is chair of the event in 2015, WalkAbout is truly a family affair. “My sister also volunteers to help lead our fundraising team. It’s so easy because people really do want to help. Even my teenagers love WalkAbout.” Fine Food and Fine Friends Enjoy an evening of indulgence on Wednesday, September 16 at Fine Tastings for Al Sigl Community at Locust Hill Country Club. RIT currently has more than 70 Effective Access Technology projects underway. Some are inspired by intense weekend-long brainstorming sessions called IdeaLabs. Some are year-long projects dedicated to researching a problem and working to develop a fully realized prototype for use outside the classroom. An example of the latter is a pediatric stander. Initial designs were tested by children attending CP Rochester’s Augustin Children’s Center. A functional prototype is now used daily by preschool staff. Athletes from the Rochester Rookies sports program earned 42 medals at a regional meet. Four went on to compete in Nationals! Go team! Keynote Highlights Growing Need for Autism Services Best-selling author, activist, and professor, Dr. Temple Grandin, will serve as keynote speaker at Thinking Across the Spectrum, a day-long conference presented by Happiness House. The event is sponsored by CP Rochester and Al Sigl Community. Grandin has penned nine books to date, including Different... Not Less and Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism. The conference features several presenters, including another author, local middle-school student Jeremiah Iheoma, who wrote My Super Life With Autism. Last fall, CP Rochester began an expansion of autism services in response to growing community need. To learn more or register for this exciting conference by the September 14th deadline, please visit happinesshouse.org/programsandservices/autismservices.aspx. Thinking Across the Spectrum Friday, September 18th 8:00AM-3:00PM Crosswinds Wesleyan Church Canandaigua 6 Each project harnesses the world-class innovation and creativity of RIT students and faculty to create practical solutions to real-world problems. Most involve collaborative partnerships. “When we began discussing the idea of Effective Access Technology,” Dr. Phillips says, “We realized these types of projects were already occurring across campus. We also realized that RIT is located in a community that provides an amazing array of services for individuals with various abilities and challenges, with Al Sigl Community of Agencies serving as a stand-out example.” Dr. Barry R. Culhane, Executive Assistant to RIT President Dr. William Destler and long-time Al Sigl Board Member, agrees. “Al Sigl Member Agencies have been serving as an amazing resource and idea incubator, helping student and faculty teams identify specific access challenges that individuals face.” He continues, “Inspired by the clients they meet and engaged by the complex design challenges, cross-disciplinary teams begin to create solutions that will improve daily life for our clients and others and lead to the more inclusive society we desire.” Al Sigl intern Crystal agrees, saying during her first co-op she was “talking to the petri dishes by the end of the week.” She continues, “It felt a little impersonal. My experience with Al Sigl developing Effective Access Technologies has made me realize I want to use my education to help make a direct difference in people’s lives.” To learn more about how RIT students and faculty are helping to promote access and inclusion, you are invited to attend the third annual Effective Access Technology Conference.
