The Fit-A-Thon was a complete success!
The 1st graders ran around with the 3rd graders, the 4th grade
and 2nd graders went together, and the 5th graders went with
their Kinderbuddies. During the Fit-A-Thon, we all got to do
something with the new school garden. Some grades got the
soil ready and some planted seed. Next time you see Mrs.
Dhruve, make sure to say a big "Thank You" for this awesome
garden.
By Ashleigh Quiles
The new garden is great because everybody got to plant seeds
and water the garden and now we can watch everything grow.
When they are ready, we can all eat the vegetables.
Vegetables are good for your body but I bet they are going to
taste even better because we grew them ourselves.

The first Student Council event of the year will
be a Thanksgiving food drive for people in our
town who could use some help. Look for more
information to come home soon.
After everything was ready, Mr. Pepe bought some supplies so
Mr. Walsh and Mr. Frederick could build a fence around our
garden to keep the animals out. We think it looks great and we
are so appreciative!
On Wednesday, October 29, The East Brunswick Education Foundation
hosted their annual fundraiser. Last year's "Dancing With The Stars" was a
huge success but it's always fun to go back to the traditional tricky tray and
Fashion Show. We were so proud of Ms. Fitzgibbons. She represented
Bowne-Munro in the fashion show and was awesome!!
By Victoria Sliwinski and Cara-Linh Jones
On October 10, Bowne-Munro celebrated its 60th birthday.
First we saw an awesome slide show by Mrs. Caroselli. It
was so interesting to see how Bowne-Munro came to be.
You can watch it too if you go to the Bowne-Munro website.
There were so many people there like past principals, teachers and even Mrs.
Bowne's granddaughters. Everyone in the school signed a card that Ms.
Gombas made. Then every grade made something and dedicated it to Bowne.
Right before lunch, we all sang Happy Birthday!
In the afternoon, we had cupcakes, got goodie bags and then got to be a part
of the Brain Show Assembly.
All birthday are fun...but Bowne-Munro's was especially fun!
By Joey Wang
The Brain Show was a part of the 60th
birthday of Bowne-Munro School. This
game made you think quick and answer
different questions. Some were pop
culture questions and some were
questions about Bowne from the slide
show. It was fun. The rule was that
your team had to press the button,
answer the question correctly and then
we even had to do a dance. If you
didn't do the right dance, you didn't get
the points. The first team to reach 300
points won! We all laughed so hard.
They even came back and did a
nighttime show with parents. I loved it!
Peace Week
Once again, we would like to thank Stop & Shop for donating the cake, the
EBEF for the grant to make it all possible, the PTA & entire Bowne-Munro
Community (past & present) for making the celebration so amazing!
During Peace Week, each
class created a page in the
BOWNE-MUNRO PEACE BOOK.
A contest was held for the cover of the book.
Phoenix Macuray's (Grade 1) won the contest
and his artwork was used for the cover of the
book. Nice work, Phoenix! Madison Rodek
(Grade 1), Ana Bornstein (Grade 2) and
Geneva Macuray (Grade 5) all received
honorable mentions. The book will be read to
all classes by Mrs. Boley and will be on display
in the Book Nook for all to see. We're hoping
it will also be shared at an upcoming Board of
Ed meeting...hopefully.
By Gia James
By Michael Caroselli
We all ate dinner at Friendly's last
month. It was a Dine To Donate to
raise money for our PTA. There were
so many 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th
graders there eating and talking to
each other. It was great to see so
many familiar faces around. It was so
much fun and the PTA raised $180.
Watching the Carolyn Dorfman dancers was
really fun. The dancers worked with the
5th graders were really nice when they
tried to teach us some dance moves. Soon,
there is a field trip to see one of their
shows. I bet it will be cool. I wonder what
I will do when I see the teachers who
taught us the dances. I hope it is fun. So
far, I give it two thumbs up!
By Steven Pepe
Fright Night was so much fun! There was a Science man that let us make slime
in Mrs. Ferrara's room. There was also a photo booth and a fortune teller and a
DJ in the gym! Also, there were many teachers there, like Mrs. Birckbichler,
Ms. Drozdowski, Mrs. Grekoski, Mrs. Russ, Ms. Holzapfel, Mrs. Orlando. Mrs.
Ferrara and Ms. Ferrante even bought their daughters! Everybody had fun from
beginning to the end!
By Cooper Torrelio
I CAN'T wait for the Halloween parade!
It will be so much fun because you get
to walk around the school and show off
your costume. After the parade, we
get to have a class party. Like I said,
I CAN'T wait! See you in the back of
the school at 2:30.
By Emma Szaro
On October 24, we had Fright Night at Bowne-Munro. It was so much fun
hanging out with my friends. There was a photo booth, make your own slime
and so much more. I hope you enjoyed Fright Night as much as I did.
By Krista Luongo
Did you hear that Fright Night was a blast? In the gym, there was dancing, food
and refreshments. There was even a mummy wrapping contest. In Ms.
Fitzgibbon's room, a fortune teller told us about our future. In the music room,
everyone was getting their pictures taken and then you could decorate your
own frame for the picture. In Mrs. Leone's and Ms. Bubnis' classrooms, there
were crafts. The library had carnival games which was my absolute favorite
room. Some of the games were tossing, bowling, and a ring toss. There was
even face painting. Oh and the Mad Science guy was in Mrs. Ferrara's room
where you could make your own slime.
Did you try to guess how much candy and snacks were in the baskets? Our
winners were Gabriel Garcia, Brielle O'Neill, Caitlin Walsh, Ismail Oudeh and
Tyler Kammerer.
A few Halloween reminders from the PTA
☻Everyone is welcome to attend the Halloween parade. It will be in
the back of the school from 2:30 pm. to 2:45 pm so the rear parking
lot will be closed. In the event of inclement weather, the parade will
be canceled.
☻Children are not to wear their costumes to school. They will have
the opportunity to change in school prior to the parade.
☻We ask parents not to send in candy or additional snacks. The
class parents have made arrangements to have drinks and snacks
for the class party.
☻Only class parents are permitted into the school for the party.
I think the Kindergarteners had a blast at their first Fright Night. I know I did!
Math Pumpkins
By Riley Seaver
Last week, the PTA gave each class a pumpkin. Ms. Colaizzi asked each person in the class to estimate how tall the
class pumpkin was (with the stem) in inches, the length of the belt, the weight and how many seeds we thought were
inside. After we estimated, we got to decorate the pumpkins with our class moms. It was great to see all of the
different pumpkins on display at Fright Night.
By Nicholas Tsoukalas
Every grade, Kindergarten through 5th grade got to decorate pumpkins recently. I liked how Ms. Saunder's class
carved a ghost into their pumpkin and the kindergarteners put their hand prints onto the pumpkin to make more
ghosts. Mrs. Russ's class put lots of props on their pumpkin. My class, Ms. Bubnis's class, decorated our pumpkins
with Mrs. Leone. We drew our own apps and glued them onto the pumpkin to make an ipumpkin! I hope everyone
enjoyed this project as much as I did.
Pie Sale
By Gavin Seaver
When you make all that Thanksgiving dinner, now you don't
have to worry about the pie. The PTA is selling all different
kinds of pies like blueberry, pumpkin, apple and even sugarfree apple pie. There are even more flavors that I don't
remember. So don't worry about baking the pie this year.

A new club is starting
at Bowne-Munro!
The Art Club is starting on
10/20/14 for the fourth and
fifth graders! There are
only 20 spots available and
a lot of them are already taken.
So if you want to join, you better ask Ms. Gombas if
there is still space available and hand in a slip today.
Then you will need to register online. If you have any
trouble with registering, email Ms. Gombas with your
question.
Maximum 25 crafters!
Contact Faith Viot ([email protected])
for more information.
New Bowne Spiritwear
By Emory Stankovits
Our new spiritwear is here!
I think the new shirts look
great! This year we
changed our school color
to be green. We also
changed our mascot to be a bear. Make
sure that you wear your new shirts on
Fridays because it is Friendship Friday!
The Art Club is on Thursdays and starts at 3:35. Parents,
make sure you come and pick your kids by 4:35.
Fall pictures that were taken in
September should come home soon.
If you are not happy with your child's
picture, or your child was absent that
day, a re-take day is coming up on November 21. Just
return the old pictures with a new order form that will
be sent home that week. There was a LifeTouch
problem with some class photos so they will be retaken
that day as well. Also, club pictures will be taken for the
following groups...
Ms. Gombas said you will not be doing the same artwork
that you do in class. This Club should be a lot of fun!

The EBEF Barnes &
Noble Book Fair will
be held at the
Brunswick Square
Mall on Saturday,
November 22.
Students and staff from every school share favorite
books, written works and other presentations
throughout the day. A percentage of all sales will
be donated to benefit the EBEF. Look for a flyer to
come home soon!
Room Parent Update
Effective immediately, Room Parents will no
longer be responsible for making phone
calls to every parent in the class due to
district-wide early dismissals, such as
weather issues. IF something happens at
Bowne alone, such as a power outage or
boiler burst, then that is when room parents
must make phone calls. Any questions,
contact Tricia Seaver or Anita Tsoukalas.
Report Cards Are Coming!
By Alyson Matecki
Get Ready! Report cards are coming home
this month. This is a way for you to see
your grades and improve in your
schoolwork. Every single grade receives a
report card...even Kindergarten. Work
hard and get those grades high so you
have nothing to worry about.
Book Fair
Brill's Karate...a Great Deal!
By Ethan Storm
Hi...ya! Do you like karate? Then head down to Brill's Karate. They have
Juniors classes on Monday (5:00 and 6:00), Wednesday (5:00), Friday (5:00
and 6:00), Saturday (12:00) and Sunday (12:00). If you are older, join our
A.T.P's. If you are younger, Juniors (age 8 and up) or Pee Wee (age 6-7) is
where you will begin. Lastly, if you are a blue belt, you graduated from pee
wees to juniors. There is fighting but don't worry, we use armor, helmets and
gloves. It's not far...it's right in Spotswood. What's even better is that
your first month only costs $29 and Brill's Karate will give that $29 to
our PTA. All of it! Well, I've got to go now.
Hope to see you there. Bye!
By Lilly Sampson
Are you a person who loves to read? Then you
should always bring money to the Book Fair. This
year, they had some really great books.
Sometimes our classroom even gets new books for
free. So, remember to always bring money. The
next book fair will be in February.
By Alexa Tsoukalas
By Alina Chowdhury
The school store has really improved a lot this year. There are a lot more
things to buy that I like, such as color pens, key chains and squishy toys. But
I think they should add putty. Wouldn't that be cool? Instead of asking your
parent to take you to another store, it would be right there for sale during our
lunch. Or maybe they could sell small stuffed animals like beanie babies. We
can try to persuade the PTA to sell these things (if you want them too). If you
have ideas of what they should sell, you should let them know.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Every year a Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer walk is held in Point Pleasant NJ.
This year my dance team from the Movement
Dance Centre not only walked but also performed.
We wanted to make people feel strong and happy.
It made me feel proud to dance for the people who
have Cancer.
Last Year's Yearbooks Are 1/2 Price!
By Abigail Suntay
Bowne headbands are the new hot fashion in our school.
Even some of the teachers are wearing them. There are
different shades of colors and different patterns to choose
from. They also come in bright, fluorescent colors. All of
them have the cool new Bowne-Munro design in the middle.
You can get them by contacting the PTA or buying them at
the school store on Fridays during lunch.
Headbands are:
$8 each or 2/$15
Bows are:
$6 each or 2/$10
By TJ Lynch
Did you get a yearbook last year
and maybe you ruined it with
water, your brother drew in it or
your dog chewed it? Maybe you
regretted not getting one or
maybe you lost it? Well, there are
10 yearbooks left from last year and
they are for sale for 1/2 price!
This is your chance to get a new 2013-2014
yearbook for only $10. I was thinking it should be
$9.99. Either way, make sure you let the PTA know if
you want one. Or you can buy one at the school
store on Fridays.

Sports Squad has started for the 5th graders and all of us
are ready for this. For most of us, gym is our favorite
special so this is a perfect program for us. If you like gym
like the rest of us, then this will be a perfect group for
you. Don't miss out! Join today!
Specimen Book
Explorer Research
By Matthew Tell
In 5th grade, we are learning
about Microworlds. As an
assignment, we brought in
things from home to look at
under the microscope. There
were many different things
brought in like rocks, spices,
and sponges. There were so
many different specimens
that were brought in. After
we observed them, Mrs.
Ferrara said she will put
together a book full of our
specimens. I think this is
going to be one great book!
By Steven Pepe
In September, we
finished our 5th grade
research unit on
explorers, such as
Christopher Columbus.
We also made a
Facebook page with all
of the information we
learned from the books
and websites. Finally,
we made a presentation
in front of the class.
Fourth graders, get
ready, you will have lots
of fun with this unit.
IXL.com is a really great math helping
website. It has many math skills that I
have found so useful. Thanks to a
grant from the PTA, we are all able to
get a membership for this year. Make
sure you check it out soon!
By Catherine Dang
IXL is really fun! On IXL, you can do math problems like
multiplication. They will show you a question and you
have to try typing the answer as fast as you can and if it's
wrong, they will review the question on the device. This
will definitely make your brain stronger and stronger and
you will see how smart you will be at math!
Fiddler Crabs
By Jessica Han
Now we have fiddler crabs in our classroom
and they are very active and fun to study!
Oh right, you have to be in fourth grade to
know what they are. They are really fun to
learn about.
By Ellen Lee
The KidStuff Books are filled with
so many great coupons for stores
that are right here in East Brunswick. But, the
KidStuff books are not free. They cost $25. If you
haven't already done so, please return the book or
your payment as soon as possible.

Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving
For Thanksgiving, we are off November 27-28. Thanksgiving is on
By Miriam Badawi
Each year, the Recreation Department has a
program where you can adopt a family for
Thanksgiving. This is usually a family that does
not have what we have. Each year, the PTA
adopts a family and gives them gift cards and
all of the food they need so they do not have to
worry about Thanksgiving dinner. I hope you
help them make this family happy on
Thanksgiving.
the 27th and its a day to be thankful and be with your friends
and family. We get to have turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes
and I love it. Something special about Thanksgiving is that my
Grandma makes sweet potato marshmallows. It is so yummy.
Guess what? Thanksgiving is actually my birthday too! I love
thanksgiving and so should you!
By Jolie Mikhail
Kinderbuddies are the
best! So far, we got to
do the Fit-A-Thon with
them...we colored our
two-lunch Tuesday bags
with them.
Also, Mrs. Faust and Ms. Ferrante's kinderbuddies got to
work on a Johnny Appleseed project together.
Working with our kinderbuddies is so much fun. I can't
wait for more kinderbuddy fun!
 The Bowne 60th Birthday was a huge success
because of a grant from the EBEF and donation from
Stop & Shop. We will make sure to support them as
well.
 Thank you to Jimmy Walsh and Scott Frederick for
building the fence around our new school garden.
Thank you to Steven Pepe for getting all the supplies
needed from Home Depot with their very generous
discount. We couldn't have done it without all of you.
 Thank you to Deb Luongo for making Fright Night the
best night of the entire school year! Deb has been a
huge part of planning and executing Fright Night for
about 8 years. We have some tough shoes to fill as this
was her last year. Deb, Fright Night will never be the
same without you.
 Thank you:
-Leah Frederick for all her help with the KidStuff books;
-Loretta Walsh for helping with Spiritwear;
-Rita Dhruve for the Fit-A-Thon;
-Anita Tsoukalas and Jessica Logan for Picture Day;
-Kris Grove for running the Book Fair all week;
-Nicole Pepe for selling the most mums;
-Tricia Seaver for organizing the Otis/Cherrydale
fundraisers;
...and all of the many volunteers who make each and
every one of our fundraisers and events successful!
It's never too late to join the PTA! Contact Cindi Utter
([email protected]) if you need a new form. Remember, you
must be an active member to be included in the Friend Finder.
Also, teachers must be active members to be considered for grants.
Ben Embly 5K Run
On October 18, five Bowne-Munro 5th
graders met at the high school to
participate in annual Ben Embly 1/2 mile
run. Each year, 5th graders from
throughout the district race as part of
October Fitness Month.
Congratulations to Nicole Garcia,
Joey Wang, Victoria Sliwinski,
Krista Luongo, and Steven Chase.
Great job, guys!!
Yearbook News:
-Send in a baby picture (under 1 year old);
-For the flashback section, send any great group shots of the 5th
graders. We are looking for any group shots from Kindergarten to
present.
-Submit any awesome group shots from Fright Night or any school event.
-Start thinking about placing an ad in the yearbook. The winter recess is
a great time to design the ad and get it finalized.
Photos can be sent to school with your name on the back, emailed to
[email protected], sent in on a cd, etc.
T-Shirts
Look for a 5th grade t-shirt order to come home soon. The quicker these
get ordered, the quicker the shirts get distributed.
Activity Fee
Look for the letter to come home soon regarding the 5th grade Activity
Fee. This year, the fee is $45 which covers each child's costs associated
with all the 5th grade fun...
A shirt • Eagle's Landing • Ice Cream/Yearbook Signing Party •
Moving Up Ceremony • Yearbook
The various 5th grade fundraisers (such as Mr. Dave Day and the
basketball game) cover the rest of the 5th grade costs.
Any questions or concerns, contact [email protected].
UPCOMING
Thank you to all those who purchased items
through our Otis Spunkmeyer and
Cherrydale fundraisers. If you selected to
have your shipment sent to the school, you
will be notified as soon as it arrives. Any

Every month, the PTA figures out which class brought in the most Box Tops and then that class gets to keep the stuffed animal for the month.
Last year, there was Leo the Lion who wore a Bowne shirt. He was so fun to have in our class. Since our school mascot changed this year,
there is going to be a bear. I can't wait to see what he looks like. I hope my class gets to keep him first and I hope we keep him over and
over again. If your class brings in the most Box Tops, the bear gets to live in your class for a whole month until the next winner is announced.
If you want to know that if your class wins, can they win again then the answer is yes. Every month they start counting over.
Thank you! Oh and I almost forgot...Bring in those Box Tops if you want your class to have a chance to win the bear!
September and October collections were combined and the October winner will be announced Monday, November 3. Friday, October 31 is
the last day to bring in your Box Tops for October's contest.
