Employee Awards Ceremony The Service Awards Ceremony will take place at the Marathon Government Center, Friday, January 17, 2014 at Two O’clock. Please come out and show your support. Blood Drive There will be a blood drive at Headquarters’ (parking lot) on January 22nd from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. For Rent Beautiful 1/1 “mother in law” downstairs apartment in Port Largo at the 100 mile marker Oceanside. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received an award for being in the top 10 fund raisers for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run in 2013. Organizer Jo Socha wants to remind everyone the next Torch Run is coming up in April! The Traffic Enforcement Unit and Traffic Deputy John McGee want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. They want to remind everyone they will be out on the roadways during the holidays. You can avoid getting an expensive traffic ticket by slowing down, driving safely and staying sober behind the wheel! Thanks for the help! Thanks to everyone for your help and support for Christmas on the Farm 2013. Once again, it was a huge success with a record of 841 visitors! There were lots of new deputies helping out this year, so please let me know if I’ve left anyone out! My sincere thanks go out to the following people, without whom the event would not have been such a success: • Sgt. Dennis Coleman as Santa Claus. • Tamara Snider as Ms. Claus. • Deputy Anthony Anderson as the Elf. • Deputy Titus Hodges as Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer. • Deputy Angelina Lubin, Jo Socha, and Sue Harrison for handing out Santa’s gifts to the children. • Tamara Snider’s mom for being our greeter and handing out flyers at the entrance gate. • Deputy Wesley Jefferson for keeping count of all the visitors entering the farm. • Deputies Jennifer Ettish, Alix Pierre, Eyner Diaz, Nathan Curry, Tommy Durham, Keith Davis, and Sebastian Pawlaczyk helped out with various duties and kept a general eye on the farm. • Pete Peterson for selling farm t-shirts, books and bottled water. • Mike Grattan for helping to keep general order on the farm. • Candi Busald and Deputy Alvarez Rice for face painting for the children. • Carol Peterson for taking donations for photos with Santa. • Deputy Nancy Torrijos and her daughter for assisting kids at the craft/coloring table. • Emil LaVache for delivering flyers to all of the local schools, and for also keeping an eye on the donation box at the gate. • Deputy Killen for providing clean uniforms for the trusties. • Becky Herrin for getting the word out to the media and for taking photos during the event. • The maintenance crew and public works, for providing tables, chairs, and extension cords. Door Decorating The judges (Tamara Snider, Michelle Quad, Donatella Kelly, Becky Herrin and Lou Caputo) have judged all the decorated doors and want to thank all of you who submitted entries to the contest. It was fun looking at all of them and it is fun to see everyone celebrating the season. Weekly Rap Up - Page 7 The Grinch was out stopping speeders in the Switlik School Zone in Marathon Tuesday, with the help of two elves - Traffic Deputy David Fernandez and Lt. Charlene Sprinkle-Huff. Farmer Jeanne Selander attended a Christmas event at the Sigsbee Navy base last week with Sloth Maddie and Nikki. The farm has been extra busy this holiday season attending events all over the Lower Keys. Jeanne says a special thanks to perpetual farm volunteers Marco DeLaRosa, Emil LaVache and Mike Grattan for their constant and invaluable help. More MARC House Christmas tree photos..... Weekly Rap Up - Page 8 Pet photos with Santa raised money for a new playground at Kreative Kids Christian Academy. Thanks to Santa (Dennis Coleman), Sgt. Amanda Coleman, Lt. Charlene Sprinkle Huff and Robert Petrick for their help. Chi Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and it’s President Lt. Lee Ann Holroyd of The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office recently held a dinner/dance to benefit The Monroe Association of ReMARCable Citizens at The Tavernier Elks Club. Over 100 people enjoyed an Italian Buffet donated by DJ’s Diner and a choice of desserts donated by MARC Board Member Mike Forster of Mangrove Mikes. 12 beautifully decorated Christmas trees were donated by local businesses for their silent auction. $5,500.00 was raised by the Sorority. Detention Deputies Reid and Pettry from the Marathon jail collected toys this week for Holiday Helpers of the Florida Keys. Plantation Key Detention Center deputies decided to forego the traditional “Secret Santa” this year, and instead they are donated toys to a local charity for less fortunate children of the Upper Keys. Weekly Rap Up - Page 9 Sunrise Rotary in Key West made a donation to Christina’s Courage Rape and Child Abuse Center. Save the date for their first annual 5K Challenge on February 15th to raise money for the worthy cause! A group photo from a recent Jail Medical holiday luncheon. Deputies Emil LaVache and Chris Duncan spoke this week to kids at Grace Jones Day Care about stranger danger. The Islamorada Sheriff’s Substation adopted a mile of highway U.S. One and is conducting regular cleanups. They just completed one last week.
