One of the world’s most renowned art collections includes
about 50 cats as part of its security system. The cats’
affiliation with the famed Hermitage Museum dates back to
1764, when Catherine the Great started the collection. She
brought in selected cats to try to keep rodents out of the
building, and cats have been there ever since.
The cats are largely kept in the basement (away from
the priceless relics), where they help keep the mouse
population under control. They also enjoy gourmet dining
choices – fish, porridge, chicken liver, and tinned food
– twice a day. All of the museum’s cats are sterilized
to keep the population under control, but the numbers
aren’t always stable, since some local residents have
taken to dumping their cats on the museum grounds. In
keeping with its cat-friendly policies, the Hermitage solves
that problem by running its own cat adoption program,
advertising locally and on the Internet!

The Sniff Test
We’ve all been hearing how animals can sniff out tumors
or anticipate epileptic fits. And now it’s been confirmed
that man’s best friend might be the earliest warning
system for bladder cancer. In the first scientific study,
dogs demonstrated that they were able to smell cancer by
distinguishing it in the urine of bladder cancer patients.
And it didn’t take specially trained dogs. Ordinary pets all
had the ability. Researchers say that they probably picked
up the scent because people with cancer shed abnormal
proteins in their urine. At first blush, one might think
it kind of icky that family pets would be enlisted for
such a mission. But then again, when you think about it,
it’s actually one of the canine world’s favorite pastimes
anyway!
TO QUOTE HOMER:
D’OH!
by Bob Bamberg
You’re probably convinced that researching information for
these pet columns is all about boring scientific studies and techno-babble that has to be interpreted into lay speak. You probably don’t get inspired by such terms as negative thigmotaxis or
anthropomorphism or trichobezoars. Neither do I. Only kidding.
Actually, I love those big words because they establish me as a
veritable fountain of trivia when I get my hair cut. “What’s that
anthripodmif whatchamacallit,” Rome will say. “Anthro-po-morphism,” I’ll say, “Yeah, that’s the one,” Rome will say. “What
does it mean again?”
But I digress. Amid all the rather dry stuff I come across in preparing columns, I am privy to some juicy stuff, too. Well, juicy
may be a bit of an overstatement (but it flowed well with dry), so
let’s just say, light stuff.

to those expectations, and you know who you are.
If you own a purebred dog...be honest, now...does it resemble you?
According to a study by the University of California at San Diego,
it probably does. To test the theory researchers photographed 45
dogs and their owners separately, then had 28 judges try to match
them up. They matched 16 out of the 25 purebreds with their owners. The study showed no evidence of a resemblance between
mixed-breed dogs and their owners. Nicholas Christenfeld, a social
psychologist who conducted the study said, “It does appear that

WINTER
WONDERLAND...for dogs!
written by Alicia Turner
O
k everyone, I know all you dog owners often have trouble
getting your dogs out and exercised in the fall and summer
months. There is an age-old battle between dog people and
non-dog people. Being a dog person without a yard or a fence can be
quite limiting at times. People must rely on different parks to give
their pooches some romping time. Many of you, as is true for me,
do not have the luxury of a nice fenced in back yard. So maybe this
can help. Here are some of the different parks around Rhode Island
that are great places to exercise, socialize, harmonize with your best
friends. Summer is gone and winter is here, so these upcoming months
should be a breeze when it comes to walking your furry friends, while
it will get a bit chilly, there are less people out and about and that
mean less worries. And remember, there is a leash law in the state of
Rhode Island… but it's not often enforced in the winter.
Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick, RI is my personal favorite. There is mile after mile of hiking trails, fields, and yes, even
beach. It’s free and open to the public year round. Trash is carry in,
carry out. The best part is in the winter months the driving road that
cuts through the park is gated off, so your pooches can run themselves
ragged without fear of being hit. The road that is gated off in the winter cuts through the center of the park and the distance is 2.2 miles.
There are plenty of sites to see along the way and chances are you will
run into other dogs and friendly people. Also, check out the beach,
and woodsy trails that run along the beaches edge. Beware of horses as
there is a stable on the outskirts of the park, and occasionally they are
out and about, and may spook your dog or as in my case, vice versa.
Otherwise take the general precautions of cars, kids, and non-dog lovers, and have a great time. Take 95s to Rt4s. First exit off Rt4, exit 8
toward East Greenwich. Take a right off the exit and follow Division
approx. 2 miles to a four-way intersection (Main St. EG). Take a right at
the intersection and follow straight .5 miles and turn left at the bottom of
the hill, follow signs to Goddard Memorial State Park.
Hope High School on Hope St. in Providence is a great place also. It is
on the outskirts of the Hope High campus. While it is a small venue, it
is completely fenced in for all the dogs needing some confinement. Also,
bring the kids because there is a small playground. Beware of school
hours because class is in session.
Wanskuck Park on Woodward St. off Branch Ave is another favorite
place to exercise and socialize. With approximately 3 acres of open field,
a walking trail lies in the woods that runs almost the entire perimeter of
the park. This is a great park and very easy to get to. Take 95 N to RT
146. Take Branch Ave exit. Left off the exit and your first right onto
Woodward St. Park is at the top of the hill on the right. Have fun and
enjoy the other dogs, because there will be some there especially around
5pm.
India Point Park is pretty dog friendly. Dogs on the leash are all set,
but if your pooch needs to get the angst out, it can be done here, but be
aware of the bike riders, and small children that frequent this beautiful
park. It’s right on the water, with a swing set on one end and a really cool
fenced off playground on the other end. There is a paved path that runs
the perimeter of the park, and plenty of grassy open areas. To get to this
park take I-195 to Gano St. exit. Follow Gano all the way to the end and
it spits you right into the park. Have fun!!!!!!!!!
Rome Point in North Kingstown RI is another beautiful spot. Plenty
of dogs and cool dog owners roam around at Rome Point. This is a mile

long stretch of a hiking trail, which leads to on open
stretch of water. The beach sand consists mainly of
broken shells, so watch your pooch’s paws. Other
than that, this is a fantastic spot to walk the dog. You
may want to bring a camera, because there are many
picturesque views here. Just park your car near the
gates, and walk straight down the path. It leads right
to the water. Rome Point is a hidden treasure of
North Kingstown and gives onlookers great views
of the Jamestown and Newport Bridges. To get here
take I-95 South to Rt. 4 south Take exit 5B towards
Wickford. Follow Rt. 102 through Wickford and
bear right over the bridge. Pass the town hall, and
Rome Point is approximately 4 miles down on the
left. Enjoy!!!!
These are just some of the great parks that exist in
our small treasure of a state. Hopefully you can get
yourself to one of these places if you have not already
been. Remember to always be cautious and aware of
others and always bring along your poop bags.
Also, please think about giving to your local animal
shelter this season or better yet...adopt.
Have fun at the park!

Dear Dog Lady,
About four months ago, I met a divorced man I really like. That’s
the good news. The bad news is Mike, my (maybe) man, seems
more smitten by Sprinkle, my Cairn terrier, than me. I’m caught in
an odd love triangle.
When Mike comes over, he greets Sprinkle with more tail-wagging
affection than he shows me. I get a peck on the cheek. Sprinkle
gets a full body rub. Mike and Sprinkle settle on the settee for
heavy petting. I sit across the room on a single chair and feel like
a wallflower at the orgy. I am touched by Mike’s attentions toward
Sprinkle, but, geez, I feel slighted. Mike and I have yet to proceed
beyond second base.
Mike has not introduced me to his children yet, nor to his mother
and siblings. But Sprinkle has met them. Mike asked if he could
borrow Sprinkle on Easter to take my dog to a family dinner. I was
so taken aback by the question that I blurted out “sure” and then
wondered -- what was I thinking?
I sat home alone waiting for my dog and my (maybe) man to come
back from their date. When the happy couple returned, I didn’t have
the courage to ask Mike why he took Sprinkle to meet the family
and not me.
Mike cheerfully told me how he teased his kin. He refused to divulge details about the mysterious critter who suddenly appeared
at Easter dinner. Apparently, his cousin Helene was so curious she
threatened to write down the phone number on Sprinkle’s collar
and do a reverse Internet phone search.
Dog Lady, what’s wrong with this picture?
Beatrice, Cambridge, MA
Oreck Cleaning Systems
We have a limited
number of these special value
cleaning systems!
Beatrice, count your beatitudes. The man has bonded with your
dog. That’s a lovely state of affairs. Dog Lady hears too often about
romantic suitors who find the pet unsuitable.
Mike, however, is carrying this canine canoodling too far.
Maybe Mike used Sprinkle as a stalking horse to introduce his family to the idea he is dating. Maybe Mike is still cautious about giving
you the unrestrained affection he lavishes on the dog so he channels all that pent-up amorous energy through your canine equivalent. Mike seems to be avoiding a few human commitment issues.
Don’t let him take Sprinkle away on any more outings, unless you
go along for the ride. Your dog is your tension defuser at family
dinners, not Mike’s. When he comes over, assume your rightful
position on the couch. Make sure your demi-beau focuses on you.
Sounds like you’ve allowed Sprinkle to take centerstage.
At some point, if Mike continues to shower Sprinkle with more attention than he shows you, you will have to gather your wits and
ask him about the state of your tentative affair. If he bolts toward the
door, you will know he wasn’t the man for you.
Hey, it’s only been four months. Be patient. Durable relationships
develop slowly. Dog Lady, ever the optimist, predicts it won’t be
long before Mike sits up and begs -- not for your dog, but for you.

Go
Green
With Your Pet...Pick out eco-friendly products
By Kim Carlson
It’s no surprise that what’s good for the planet is also
better for your pet! I remember a story about Jerry, an
Australian dog who lived in the outback, chasing and
eating wild game. Jerry has been eating healthy, natural
food and getting good exercise for his entire life….all 27
years of it!
I want Tito, my Havanese puppy, to have a long and
healthy life, too. Even though he gets lots of exercise
chasing rabbits and squirrels (but inevitably failing to
catch them), he’ll probably only live to be about 15. I
know that finding raw and organic foods and natural,
biodegradable, and non-toxic products for Tito will help
him live a longer, happier, and healthier life. The same
national movement bringing us free-range buffalo meat,
organic zucchini blossoms, and non-toxic household
cleaners is developing pet products that are planetfriendly AND pet-healthy.
Gerbils, ferrets, dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and fish have
moved off the farm and into our homes as part of the
family. Yoga for dogs, holistic health care, and natural
products all stem from wanting the best for our animal
family members.
Earth-friendly products are available for every type of
pet. In a regular TV segment I do called the “EarthSmart
Consumer” on KARE-TV (NBC) in Minneapolis-St. Paul,
I define earth-friendly products as being produced in an
energy-efficient way and using fewer resources because they
are recycled or recyclable. They don’t degrade the planet because they are less toxic and more natural. Fortunately for
us pet-lovers, there are plenty of eco-friendly pet products
out there. Here are a few to consider:
• There are many premium or “human quality” pet foods
on the market. These give me the option of feeding Tito
an all-natural diet with no substandard filler ingredients.
This type of pet food can be pricey, but giving it to Tito
ensures he isn’t eating chemical additives and other unmentionables. If premium foods are too expensive, make your
own pet food and add supplements or enzymes. Go easy on
the fatty treats and pet “junk foods.” They’re sort of like an
animal version of “Super Size Me!”
• For hygiene, when it’s time to wash your dog after being
at the cabin for a week, use a pet shampoo made from natural or botanical ingredients. Most pets have sensitive skin
and many are prone to allergies that can cause them to shed
more hair and dander around your home. Follow up with
a conditioner that adds moisture back to sensitive skin and
leaves hair soft and shiny. As a final step, try a natural flea
repellent before a toxic one. It’s safer for your pet and better
for your family.
• Toys and pet chews have also gone “green” recently. Look
the animal print
for toys that are made from recycled content like old tires.
Some toys are made from all-natural, non-petroleumbased materials like latex, hemp, and organic cotton. You
can be sure that these products won’t release toxic fumes
into your pet’s mouth. Products made from petroleum
give off VOC s (Volatile Organic Compounds) that can
potentially lead to health problems including dizziness,
headache, nausea, throat irritation, or on the extreme end,
possibly cancer. For this reason, many parents are also
limiting their children’s exposure to plastic toys, as well.
• Bedding, habitat, and kitty litter can be found with recycled and natural ingredients. Examples include pine or
cedar made of sawdust recovered from mills, rather than
made from harvesting new trees. For your walks with
your pup, look for biodegradable pooper scooper bags.
And don’t forget to choose lawn and garden products
made from organics and less toxic chemicals that won’t
harm your barefoot pet or backyard wildlife.
Finding these products is easy today. There are dozens of
websites that specialize in earth-friendly products for all
kinds of pets. Face it, a healthy, happy, long life is what we
all want for ourselves and loved ones, including our four-
legged family members. Paying attention to the health
of our pets, families, and planet goes hand in hand with
finding that fountain of youth and happiness. Discovering
earth-friendly alternatives to traditional pet products feels
good and keeps our pets, families, and homes healthier for
years to come. My Tito may not live as long as Jerry in the
outback, but I’m doing all I can to ensure that he is a playful pup long into his senior years.

Thinking About an Akita ?
By Alexandra Morgan
2004. 15
try their best to save the dogs who are just pushy or untrained.
Unfortunately, there are never enough homes available.
If an Akita seems like the right breed for you, be sure to do
careful research into the dog’s breeding and get a dog from a
well bred, sociable line, or adopt from a Rescue. ( As with any
breed, you should never buy from a pet store.) Do not purchase
any puppy whose parents are aggressive! The pup has probably
inherited the temperament. Ask the breeder’s vet whether the
pup’s parents and grandparents are free from genetically inherited physical defects such as hip displaysia and weak knees. How
much does the breeder know about genetics, and what precautions have been taken to ensure that the pup will be healthy and
of good temperament ? Get a Temperament Evaluation done by
an expert when the puppies are 7 weeks old to help you choose
the right pup for you, and then start training.
Puppy kindergarten is absolutely essential to help you in raising
a friendly, obedient dog who can be a joyful additon to the family
instead of a frightening, tragic mistake. Akitas are not “bad dogs”
– but they are not for everybody.
BREED FOCUS
In recent years, the Akita has moved from complete unknown to popular pet. This Japanese breed has a recorded
history dating back over 300 years. They were bred as guard
dogs and for hunting deer, bear and boar. Very large, powerful
and protective the handsome Akita is not a beginner’s dog. His
physical strength is sufficient to drag an adult down the street
with ease. His highly protective “one family” personality often
leads to aggressive guarding behavior.
Although most Akita puppies are easy going, lovable teddy
bears, at 5 to 8 months old the majority of them undergo a
change to a classic adult Akita personality. Pushiness, guarding of toys, bones and food, aloofness with strangers, irritable
aggression, dog aggression, predatory behavior and aggressive
guarding of owners and territory frequently begin to emerge
at this age. As you can see from this description, even a well
bred Akitais a challenge to raise, requiring patience, firmness
and knowledge. He is definitely not a beginner’s dog.
Tragically, the Akita’s great poularity has led to bad
breeding practices, and today the majority of all Akitas
are plagued by a variety of health and temperament

problems. Many Akitas are “shy-sharp”. This term is
used to describe a personality that is very, very easily
irritated, annoyed and threatened (“shy”) and that uses
a high level of aggression (“sharp”) when upset. These
are dogs that bite you because you looked in their eyes,
touched their paws, spoke sharply, moved suddenly, or
any one of a hundred other things the dog might find
distressing. In addition to being shy-sharp, many Akitas
(especially un-neutered males) are excessively dominant,
often to the point where any attempt to control them
elicits aggression. Additionally, many Akitas suffer
from a thyroid deficiency which can cause aggression,
but usually goes undetected and therefore untreated.

up being put to sleep before their third birthday.
In a well bred dog, irritable and “shy-sharp” aggression should not be present, and with training the other
behaviors should be controllable. These behaviors are a
normal part of the Akita’s temperament, and were de18 Luongo Square, Providence, RI • 401.351.5492

and guarding dog. However, these
qualities are not very desirable in
a pet. As a dog trainer, I frequently
have clients who report that their

Goldfish Care
by Susan T. Forman
Goldfish can make great pets!
Their movements in the water are fascinating to watch.
With good care goldfish can live for many years. Water is as
necessary to them as air is to people. Since goldfish live in
a water environment, they breathe with their gills. That’s
why it is important that fish are kept in clean water. Goldfish tend to be very messy, and this means that they quickly
pollute water they are in.
One body spot that fish excrete ammonia from is its gills,
and if too much ammonia builds up, it is unhealthy for the
goldfish. Fish waste adds to the ammonia problem. What
happens is people overfeed the fish. Goldfish recognize
their owners and look forward to feeding times. Sometimes
it seems like they beg for a treat. Even though their behavior is cute, in the interest of goldfish health feed the pet a
tiny pinch of food once a day.
Goldfish have skin covered by scales. There is a clear slime
coat over the scales. When people grab a fish it feels slippery
to the touch, plus all the wiggling makes it tough to hold
onto. The fish just wants to go about swimming and breathing in its water environment. Both scales and slime help
protect the goldfish from sickness. If the fish feels stressed or
scared, it can effect the goldfish’s slime and health. It’s like
when people feel very tired when catching a cold.
There are things to do to help the goldfish stay happy and
healthy. Keep in mind that these fish have large eyes but
no eyelids like people do. It would not be good to keep the
goldfish in bright sunlight, because it may be too strong for
them. At night when people go to sleep, fish need some
type of rest just like humans. Their eyes always stay open,
but resting goldfish move about much less and slower.
Some fish will find a comfortable spot near the bottom to
rest during the night. In the winter when I get up early it’s
still dark outside. I turn on my bedroom light and see my
large goldfish resting at the bottom. After a few minutes
of my moving about with the light on, my fish appears to
wake up by swimming and then showing interest in me.
My goldfish has come to know its meal time. I feed my
pet fish before I get my own breakfast. Pets need people to
take care of them, and this way I am sure not to forget to
feed the fish.
Another important thing to do is not tap on the glass or
make loud noise near the fishbowl or tank. All fish are
sensitive to sound, and if this is done a lot, the goldfish can
become sick. It’s a little like when someone sneaks up on a
person and then does something scary such as yelling “boo.”
People’s bodies react by becoming tense, and the shock is
harder on a goldfish’s body.
Following are some simple steps to prepare for a new
goldfish.
1. Get a two gallon fishbowl and rinse it clean with only
water. A large bowl is very important, since it will give
more room for swimming and provide more oxygen for
the goldfish.
2. Rinse some gravel to rid of dust, and then place it along
the bottom of the bowl.
3. Add cold water to the bowl, but don’t fill it to the top.
The goldfish will do better if the water level only goes to
the widest part of the bowl. Added surface area gives more
oxygen to the fish whereas the narrow part at the bowl’s top
gives less oxygen.
4. Let the water sit for a day so that it becomes room
temperature. Plus it also helps the chlorine in tap water to
fade. Chlorine is hard on fish in the same way as chlorine
in swimming pools often burns people’s eyes. Be sensitive
to the goldfish. There are also chlorine removers available
at pet stores.
5. When the goldfish is brought home, float the bag for
about 20 minutes before letting
the fish swim out. The goldfish needs to adjust to temperature differences between the store’s tank and its new
home. Be gentle in releasing the fish. Rough handling by
dumping the bag upsets the goldfish.
5. Even in a large bowl, it is important to change the water
every week and rinse the
gravel of any waste. Your finned pal relies on you for its
clean water and care.
With these steps a pet goldfish will delight children and
adults for a long time. A thriving fish will grow quite large
after awhile, so when that happens the fish can be moved
into a larger home, such as a filtered tank.

I’ve been a customer there for many years. George has

answer questions and try to help with problems. He taught
me how to move a goldfish from one bowl to another by

What are Animal Rights?
by Mike Fink
Mike Fink dives in to ponder this complicated question.
You may think you already know where you stand on animal rights. If
you read this magazine, you’re for ‘em. If you barbecue in your backyard in July and wear furs in December, you’re probably agin ‘em. But
the new volume of essays subtitled “Current Debates and New Directions,” edited by a former Brown professor, Martha Nussbaum, and
Cass Sunstein of the University of Chicago, may give you pause, poise,
and points to ponder.
This reader dwelt deeply on each chapter, savoring every fine distinction and lingering on each argument. Just the headings of each author’s
input gives a hint as to the seriousness of this excellent edition. Steven
Wise writes under the phrase, “One Step at a Time.” Richard Posner
deals with “Legal, Philosophical, and Pragmatic Perspectives.” The
renowned Princeton professor, Peter Singer, forcefully sums up the
tenets of his lifelong commitment with the promise “Ethics beyond
Species and beyond Instinct.” Gary Francione asks, “Animals--Property
or Persons?” David Wolfson and Mariann Sullivan label agribusiness
“Foxes in the Hen House.” Cass Sunstein proposes, “Can Animals
Sue?” Catharine Mackinnon compares animals to women in “Of Mice
and Men: A Feminist Fragment.” And, finally, Martha Nussbaum sums
up the compendium with “Justice for Nonhuman Animals.”
This Oxford University Press publication will surely break your heart
even while it challenges your mind and your mindset in shaping the
habits of your life--at least while you live under the shadow of its influence. Scientists and philosophers have traditionally defined animals as
lesser beings, even mere objects, incapable of those supposedly uniquely
human capacities for memory, grief, dread, and hope. Yet not only such
magnificent creatures as whales and elephants, gorillas and parrots can
plan and sorrow, but our diminished domestic stock, our cattle and
horses, our poultry and our pets, also share many of the perceptions we
hoard and honor in self-congratulation.
Martha Nussbaum concludes the profoundly moving anthology with
a list of animal rights. “All sentient beasts have a secure entitlement
against gratuitous killing.” Entitlement to a healthy life. She is referring
to the extreme cruelty of penning up “farm” animals with absolutely
no concern for their comfort and “happiness.” She adds wonderful
words among the rights of animals: “integrity,” “senses, imagination and
thoughts,” “emotions, play and control over one’s environment.”
This reviewer, who has worried about the plight of all living things outside the realm of storybooks and cartoons, in the real world, welcomes
“Animal Rights,” and wishes to share the experience of reading it with
a wide audience. Sentimental pity for one’s own household companion,
cat, dog, or canary, does not deal adequately with the extent of our complicity in our culture with the untold horrors inflicted on our fellow
residents of planet Earth. We have taken away the sacredness of nature
and the harmony of its balances and diversity. Some of the problems
stems from the urbanization and suburbanization of our societies: we
don’t see where our food, clothing and shelter come from. We buy the
wrapped packages. Other societies have begun to pass and press laws to
protect neglected victims of consumerism.
Perhaps our first priority must be to care for our fellow humans. But the
cries of the denizens of whatever is left of the wild, like the screams of
the animals that live, briefly, and die, dreadfully, under our roofs, will
reach our ears and our hearts only if we begin by reading such books as
“Animal Rights.” It is scarier and more compelling than any of the junk
entertainment offered for ordinary and conventional summer distraction.

This is Bart. He is a very special
kitten. He came in with an
infection on his head that has
left a hole. It has since healed
and he is now looking for that
perfect home. He is a very frisky
kitten and he loves to play with
other cats
Geezer is an older cat...our guess is that
he is about 7 years old. He was left on our
doorstep. He is a very sweet and laid back
cat. He is looking for a family to love him.
He’s good with other cats, but does not like
dogs. Please come and visit to see if he’s
the one for you!
Molson is 9 month old neutered male. He is a
short haired beautiful brown tabby. His brown
tabby markinings are very defined. He is very
sweet and he loves to play. Molson is a very
dominate cat and would probably be better off as
the only cat in the household. However, he would
do well in a home with children. Come and visit to
see if he’s the one for you!
Reeses is a long haired calico. She is about 2
years old. She was found in an abandoned building
and she was very hungry. One of our volunteers
cams to her rescue and now she is awaiting a new
home. She is very sweet. Please come and visit to
see if she’s the one for you!

300,000 orphaned pets will go...
“Home 4 the Holidays”!
Unplanned. Unwanted. Unloved. These words describe the orphaned
dogs and cats at animal shelters around the world. Home 4 the Holidays 2004 is working to change that.
Home 4 the Holidays began in 1999 when Helen Woodward Animal Center began a campaign to save
the lives of orphaned pets. Center President Michael M. Arms recalls, “We organized 14 shelters in San Diego with a goal of sending each
pet Home 4 the Holidays.
The largest obstacle was the idea that pet adoptions during the holidays are an emotional
decision. “Home 4 the Holidays shelters find
their return rate is lower than other times of the
year” says Arms. “Shelters work to match the
needs of the pets with the desires of the families.”
2,563 dogs and cats were adopted in San Diego during Home 4 the Holidays 1999, each pet going home
with a holiday meal of Iams food.
Home 4
the Holidays 2000 grew to include 130 animal shelters in
California,
Utah, Washington, New Mexico, and Texas with a goal
of
15,000
adoptions. The result of the drive was 19,992 completed
adoptions.
Iams asked, “What about next year?” More than 320 shelters
in the USA, Canada,
Puerto Rico and Mexico signed up, making Home 4 the
Holidays 2001 an international event.
When actress Diane Keaton heard
about Home 4 the Holidays Mike Arms offered her a tour of
Helen Woodward Animal Center. As the
tour ended Arms asked Keaton to serve as spokesperson for Home 4
the Holidays 2001. Without hesitation she replied, “Of course.” 450 animal shelters in four nations joined forces with
a goal of 100,000 adoptions. Home 4 the Holidays 2001 shelters completed 100,124 loving, lifelong adoptions.
The 1,200 animal shelters and pet rescues in 19 countries that “joined paws” for Home 4 the Holidays 2002 performed a holiday miracle by placing 170,000 orphaned pets in their new homes. And the next year was even better.
Home 4 the Holidays 2003 carried on the tradition. The 1,310 shelter partners reported 270,000 adoptions,
This holiday season Helen Woodward Animal Center, The Iams Company, and Diane Keaton are leading more than
1,740 groups worldwide with a goal of 300,000 Home 4 the Holidays 2004 adoptions. Each pet adopted during Home
4 the Holidays 2004 will go home with an Iams starter kit including the “Have a Heart” pledge, the “Your New Dog”
or “Your New Cat” booklet, and its holiday meal of Iams food.
If it’s time to welcome a pet into your home, please visit your local animal shelter. Ask lots of questions and remember that your pet should match your lifestyle…not your furniture. A pet is a lifetime commitment. If you don’t
find your pet, ask for directions to other shelters or log on to www.home4theholidays.com for a list of participating
Home 4 the Holidays shelters. Remember that when you adopt a shelter pet you save a life. If you’ll do your part,
we only have 299,999 to go!

We need YOU!
From the novice to the pro, the young to the old, we need you to join in the
crusade to make a difference in the lives of area shelter animals.
Knitters for critters is a new organization in the area..and we need

provide homeless animals with reassurance and comfort in a
frightening and constantly
changing environment.
We need people to create
and donate blankets of all
sizes, contact shelters and
deliver these 'love rugs' to
shelters in need.

Tse Tse Gallery's 3rd annual
Art Through Adoption
Story and photos byTraer Scott
The Tse Tse Gallery has been a Providence institution for many years. Founder and Executive Director,
Therese Beaudet’s mission statement clearly imparts
the mantra of “the impact of art on individual and
community development” and on Thursday, October
21, three days before her wedding, Tse Tse hosted
her third annual “Art Through Adoption” evening
as part of Gallery Night Providence. Vibrant animal
themed artwork set the stage for a parade of more
than 15 homeless dogs and cats in front of an audience
of potential adopters. John Washburn, former Providence Animal Control Director and veteran animal
trainer, hosted the proceedings. It was John, a long
time Rhode Island animal enthusiast, who Tse Tse first
went to three years ago about her idea of combining
art with homeless animals and involving the Providence community in a unique annual experience.
That particular Thursday, volunteers at Providence
Animal Control spent many hours washing and
grooming the nine canine models. The dogs and cats
were then brought downtown to the Tse Tse Gallery
where volunteers from PAC and the Animal Print
presented them to the crowd, runway style. Mary
Davie of Volunteer Services for Animals served as
the announcer, detailing each animal’s characteristics
and needs, hoping to make a match with the perfect
home.
During most art openings, you expect to see patrons
sipping wine, nibbling on cheese and perusing the
offerings with resolute composure. But on this night,
the Tse Tse was ringing with adoring coos, laughter
and excitement as animal lovers rolled on the floor
with dogs and cuddled kittens in their arms. After the
“show”, friendly dogs mingled with the crowd receiving many treats and belly rubs while cats and kittens
were passed from one eager lap to another. The affection and excitement of the night served as a welcome
relief for the shelter animals who spend much of their
time caged while waiting to be adopted.
Guest cuddle with one of the available dogs.
Shelter Volunteer with Tse Tse (right)
Shelter Volunteer with guests.
The following morning, all animals who participated were vaccinated and ready to be adopted at PAC. Happily,
four dogs and numerous cats did find loving homes as a direct result of “Art Through Adoption”. With each year,
the event coordinators hope to draw an ever bigger audience, with a goal of sharing inspiring art, finding homes
for all the “models” and helping to educate people about the thousands of wonderful pets that are waiting for
homes in local shelters.

3rd Annual Jamestown Holiday Dog Parade
The Annual Jamestown Holiday Parade of Dogs will be held Saturday, December 11, 2004. This is the third year of the parade, and
with over 100 dogs dressed in their finest last year, we expect an
even bigger crowd as word gets out about this fun event. Registration commences at 10:30am at the Jamestown Fire Department,
located at 50 Narragansett Avenue, in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
The $5.00 registration fee is used to support the “Paws and Claws
Senior Pet Fund” and to purchase items from the Jamestown Animal Control Officer’s wish list. The “Pet Fund” pays for the medical
and daily cost of care for Jamestown’s senior citizen’s pets.
The holiday costume parade starts at 11:00am from the Fire Station, with the Narragansett Avenue blocked off to insure everyone’s
safety. This year’s grand marshall of the parade is Dr. Lauren
Mascola of the Jamestown/Newport Animal Hospital Group. The
Jamestown Middle School marching band will provide music as we
sing Holiday Carols and stroll down Narragansett Avenue to the
East Ferry Christmas Tree. Prizes are given to the best dressed
dogs, and everyone goes home with a treat. No cats need to apply!!

North Providence Animal
Shelter is interviewing potential
volunteers and dedicated individuals for our little shelter! This
is a very rewarding opportunity
to make a difference in lives of
those who need us.
We have lost a few to school,
family crisis and time restrictions recently and we really need
dedicated people who would give
sometime, even an hour on a
weekly basis to the animals who
so desperately need attention
and socializing while they are in
our care. No cleaning is necessary, just petting and cuddling
cats/kittens and perhaps if you
are comfortable, walking dogs.
If you are over the age of 21
and have an interest or know
someone who is interested in
making a difference and would
like to help, please contact me at
[email protected] or call
anytime 401-231-2043 or 401743-0907.
Thank you very much!

Knit, Sew, Crochet,
Quilt? We need YOU!
From the novice to the pro, the young
to the old, we need you to join in the
crusade to make a difference in the
lives of area shelter animals.
Knitters for critters is a new group
forming in the area..and we need your
help. Our goal is to have no shelter
animal in RI and MA without a warm
and comfortable blanket to sleep on.
These 'love rugs' can help provide
these homeless animals with reassurance and comfort in a frightening and
constantly changing environment.
We need people to create and donate
blankets, contact shelters and deliver
these 'love rugs' to shelters in need.
If you would like donate your skill and
