Leticia Nel sterf na tweede hartoorplanting

BETHAL - Me. Leticia Nel (28) wat twee
hartoorplantings in vier weke ondergaan het,
is op 24 Junie omstreeks 10.20nm dood.
Haar toestand was die laaste paar dae
onveranderd en die oorsaak vir haar dood is
nog nie bekend nie.
Sy het op 26 Mei die goeie tyding gekry
dat ’n nuwe hart beskikbaar was.
Omdat daar komplikasies met die eerste
hartoorplanting was, is inwoners van
Ermelo, Bethal, Morgenzon en Secunda
gevra om bloed te skenk.
Die nuwe hart wou nie werk nie en me.
Nel is met lewensondersteunende toerusting
aan die lewe gehou, terwyl daar dringend na
nog ’n hart gesoek is.
Sy het op 4 Junie weer ’n hartoorplanting
ondergaan.
Dié keer was die oorplanting suksesvol en
die hart het vanself begin klop.
Hoewel dit ’n hoë risiko oorplanting
was, het me. Nel tekens van vordering en
verbetering getoon.
Sy is later met geelsug gediagnoseer en
dokters het met behandeling begin.
Daar was daagliks vordering totdat sy later
stabiel gebly het.

whether he was part of that specific litter.

for his age and clearly malnourished.”
Caring for a pig in the winter is difficult,
because they need to be kept warm and dry,
but must still be able to roam around.

“Like human children, a young pig cannot
regulate its body temperature and needs to
be kept warm in this freezing weather.”

SECUNDA - Local motorcycle clubs
took hands on 25 June and organised a
fundraising for Logan Dyssel at Lake
Umuzi.
He was born with a congenital heart
defect.
As a result he had open heart surgery
when he was eight months old and suffered
two strokes before he was two years old.
He is now deaf and can not walk or see
properly.
Logan’s family wants to raise funds to
have Logan undergo a cochlear implant that
will enable him to hear.
Country singers Charlie Nash and Liza Storm, performed at the
fundraising event for little Logan on 25 June. The crowd loved them
and no one was sitting when Charlie sang “Hillbilly Rock”.
“Everybody did so much to help,
but we still do not have enough
money”
The day was eventful with Logan clearly
the star.
Artists such as Charlie Nash, Liza Storm
and Ronaldo, performed.
Elsa from Frozen and Rapunzel were there
and did face painting.
Not nearly enough money was however
raised for Logan’s operation.
Ms Georgina Solomon, Logan’s
grandmother, said: “Everybody did so much
to help, but we still do not have enough
money.
“I am selling keyholders in the form of a
motorcycle with Logan’s name engraved on
it.
“I am not putting a price on it, so anybody
who wants to contribute can buy one of the
holders.
“Any donation is welcome.”
One cochlear implant costs R275 000.

Little Paws Big Hearts reaches out to cats and dogs

SECUNDA - Little Paws Big Hearts did an
outreach on 18 June in Holfontein during
which they handed out more than 100 litres
of soup.
Students from as far as Stellenbosch
University who helped, said: “It is the
middle of exams, but taking a break from
studying has never been this rewarding.”
Mr Louis Kempen, founder of Little
Paws Big Hearts, said: “It is incredible to
work with this excellent team and we are
grateful.”
Their primary focus is education and to
enrich communities.
Relationship building plays a crucial part,
therefore not only did the dogs and cats get
treated on the day, but also the children.
They got entertained to a special Youth
Day party.
Children and the elderly received warm
soup, oranges, popcorn and cake.
Mr Kempen said: “We had fun, but the
regular activities also needed to continue.”
The dogs and cats were dewormed and
were treated for fleas and ticks.
It is too cold to dip animals now.
“We received donations of material from
which we made small blankets for the
animals.
“It is freezing at night and we desperately
need more supplies to ensure every animal
that needs to sleep outside, gets a warm
blanket.”
“It is with grateful hearts that we thank the
sponsors and volunteers who made Saturday
a special outreach.”
The volunteers thanked Mr and Ms Sonja
Kempen for their dedication to and passion
and love of the organisation.
“Not only are you the founding
members, but you are truly the glue of this
organisation.
“You are the fuel for the fire and
your passion for making a difference is
contagious.”
Mr Kempen said: “The people who are
crazy enough to think they can change the
world, are the ones who do.
“After an outreach like Saturday’s, we are
motivated and reminded that the work we do
honestly makes a difference, even if it is just
one dog or cat at a time.”
They handed out 100 litres of soup to
more than 150 children and 40 senior
citizens.

Local CEO will join SleepOut

Council reaches payment agreement

HIGHVELD - The Govan Mbeki
Municipality has reached and signed
a payment agreement with Eskom’s
management.
This came after Council has negotiated
about a payment plan after the power utility
threatened to cut electricity in February.
The agreement was effective from 9 June.
Council said R189 million, including
VAT and accumulated interest compounded
monthly from August 2003 until 8 June is
owed to Eskom.
The first payment towards the agreement
in exclusion of the current accounts, will
be paid in July with the last payment in
December 2017 according to the payment
plan. Interest will be suppressed on the
capital amount of R189 million.
Mr Bheki Kubheka, head of
Communication and Marketing, said the
municipality was pleased to entered into this
agreement with Eskom.
“As much as an agreement had
been reached with Eskom, it cannot
be overemphasised that the successful
honouring of this agreement highly depends
on shared responsibilities between the
consumers and the municipality.
“The consumers must refrain from stealing
electricity and settle all their service charges
with the municipality in time and in full
while those who have been complying and
paying their service in time, continue to do
so.
“This will allow us to honour the
agreement with Eskom, while collecting all
its revenue in the debt book and possibly
settle the debt before its lapsing timeline.”
SECUNDA - Prommac (Pty) Ltd CEO, Mr
Jason English, will once again be taking part
in The Sun International CEO SleepOut.
The CEO SleepOut takes place on the
iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge in the heart
of Johannesburg on 28 July.
The bridge was opened by Mr Nelson 13
years ago and aside from its multi-coloured,
towering beauty, the bridge holds important
significance as it represents Madiba’s dream
to unite South Africans, to link people
together through a common goal of building
a better South Africa, for everyone.
This landmark is the perfect place on
which to hold the CEO SleepOut, because it
does not only address the issue of unity in a
national and global sense, but also delivers a
strong message about the power of education
to bridge the gap between the destitute and
the economically free.
This year, as current and future business
leaders sleep out on the Nelson Mandela
Bridge, they will be coming together to gain
a deeper, more meaningful compassion for
the homeless and to engage in discussions
about how businesses can be used for
positive social change.
All funds raised will be put towards
eradicating homelessness, by supporting a
vital stepping-stone on the path to economic
freedom for all.
It is not about giving away wealth, but
about using your own abilities to build a
successful South Africa from the bottom up.
By donating, people get to play a
meaningful role in the betterment of their
country.
Each of the CEOs and their nominees
who participate in the CEO SleepOut, will
represent the CEO’s company.
The CEO will nominate an exceptional
staff member from their organisation, an
outstanding student, and an inspirational
matric pupil – all with strong leadership
qualities – to join them on the bridge for the
night.
These four people in each group will be
the #4Leaders4Change.
For the #4Leaders4Change to participate
in The SleepOut, they must commit to
pledging R160 000 which will be raised in
the spirit of Paying It Forward.
The CEOs will pass on their R100 000
to their staff member, who will commit to
helping the student raise R50 000.
The student will then commit to help the
matric pupil raise R10 000.
The R160 000 will be awarded to the
appointed beneficiary partners that focus on
education.

SECUNDA - Mr Paul Croxons is the fourth
generation Croxons to be involved in the
motor industry in South Africa and brings
years of experience to United Motors where
he has been appointed the new general
manager.
“My great-grandfather opened one of the
first dealerships in Barberton.”
Mr Croxon had the opportunity to work in
Germany.
“I worked for a year as a trainee engineer
at the Mercedes Benz plant in Stuttgard.
“Back then you had to complete a year
of practical work before you could study
engineering.
“You were taught to weld, to assemble and
to understand metal fatigue, to allow you to
make informed decisions later in your career
when you are responsible for designing the
vehicles.”
Upon his return to South Africa, he
entered the motor industry in a sales
capacity and has not looked back.
Mr Croxon has fulfilled many roles,
working his way up from trainee sales
manager to sales manager, franchise
manager and dealer principal, and with more
than 30 years of industry experience. He
knows what makes a dealership successful.
“I foresee the following to be my biggest
challenges in our local market.
“Firstly, I will ensure that the service
department is the best service department in
the country.
“I want customers from Secunda to
service their vehicles at United Motors.
“Secondly, I will ensure that our trained
deliver the best possible service and thirdly
all customers are welcome to appraoch me.”
Mr Croxon wants United Motors Secunda
to be number one on the customer service
index.
“I believe in honesty and consistency.
“The most important lesson I have learnt
throughout my years in this industry, is that
you should always have the best interest of

HIGHVELD - With more than 13 years
of both local and international culinary
experience, Mr Johan van Zyl, the newly
appointed Executive Chef at the Graceland
Hotel, Casino and Country Club, promises
to offer flavoursome and quality in every
bite.
“I love working with bold, bulky flavours.
“Anybody can throw something together
and call it a stew, but bringing out the subtle
flavours of the produce and then enhancing
these flavours to create something delicious,
is a skill.”
Mr Van Zyl has worked at various hotel
and restaurant kitchens countrywide, as well
as in the United Kingdom.
He decided to build upon his experience
in 2006 and completed his diploma at the
Chantecler Hotel School of Food and Wine
in Durban.
After completing this course, he worked
at the Chantecler Hotel before moving to the
Hotel Edwardian in Port Edward.
Mr Van Zyl was the sous chef at the
Tropicana Hotel whereafter he left for the
United Kingdom.
“I have always wanted to work overseas to
gain more experience.”
What stood out about his time abroad, was
the quality of produce and the various levels
of staff in the kitchens.
“This teaches you to work clean, effective
and efficient.
“You learn to plan properly and to manage
your ingredients.
“There is no chance to do it a second time,
you have to do it right the first time.”
Mr Van Zyl is particularly excited about
the challenges of dealing with the whole
food and beverage division of Graceland.
“I believe in consistency and using the
best possible produce to create wholesome
and flavoursome food.
“We source our ingredients locally as far
as possible. ”

Zyl finds inspiration from Marco Pierre
White.
He is optimistic about the team that he
will work with at Graceland and believes
they can work together to deliver on the
promise of consistently flavoursome meals
that are beautifully presented.

Martie was die dogter van Tienie en Jakkie Ehlers van Charl Cilliers omgewing en sy is gebore in die Trichardt
distrik in 1943. Martie was die jongste van 4 kinders. Sy spandeer haar kinderjare in Charl Cilliers en is in
1960 getroud met Andries Steyn en vestig hulle in Primrose, Germiston. Hulle verhuis in die sewentigs na
Evander. Martie en Andries was bekende inwonders van Evander. Andries was op Brackenmyn werksaam en
Martie het vir jare in die meubelbedryf gewerk. Tydens haar man, Andries se afsterwe in 1998 was sy
werksaam by Lewis Stores op Secunda. Martie tree af in 2003 en woon in Evander tot November 2014. In
2014 gaan sy na Silwer Jare Ouetehuis in Bethal waar sy die afgelope 1 jaar en 7 maande gewoon het. “Dit was
goeie jare vir haar daar en sy was gesond en rustig”, sê haar dogter Ronèl. Ons moeder is baie skielik van ons
af weggeneem. Dit voel nog onwerklik. Ons gaan haar ongelooflik baie mis, ons harte is seer en
stukkend. Haar herinneringe is in ons harte gebêre.” Martie laat haar vier kinders André, Ina, Mariana en
Ronèl agter. Haar afsterwe word ook betreur deur haar ouer suster Anna, skoonkinders, 9 kleinkinders en 5

SECUNDA - Members of the Secunda Mall
Ladies Club came together on 23 June at
Symphony’s Cafe.
Although the morning was misty and there
was a chill in the air, the warm drinks and
cosy atmosphere soon had all thoughts of the
cold dispelled.
Ms Khanyisa Jaceni treated guests to
musical delights as she crooned away the
cold.
The theme for the morning was baked
goods and Ms Esmeraldah Olckers from
Heavenly Bakes, treated those present to a
cupcake decorating presentation.
Each woman also received a DIY cupcake
decorating kit and with step-by-step
guidance from the expert, everyone soon had
a perfectly iced sweet treat.
Ms Fatima De Ponte from Cupcakes for
Kids with Cancer explained what their goal
is and emphasised the importance of early
detection of cancer in young children.
Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer uses
funds raised to promote cancer and cancerdetection awareness, to help certain
charitable organisations and to pay the
medical costs of cancer patients.
Their next fundraising is on 24 September
and Ms Jani Zaayman, marketing manager
of Secunda Mall, pledged to provide
cupcakes and assistance on that day.
Ms Stefanie Nel, a representative from
Montagu, spoke about their fruit jams and
the gift hampers available at the store.
Each guest received a cupcake decorating
kit with icing, sprinkles and a piping bag.

Kiriyatswane wins under protest
KINROSS - The Department of Education
Gert Sibande District, in partnership with
McDonald’s U/14 Schools League, held a
tournament at Kinross Sasol Club on Friday,
17 June.
The finals were between Kiriyatswane
Secondary School and Masizakhe Secondary
School.
Lindo Sikhonde scored the first goal for
Masizakhe in the first 10 minutes of the
match.
Kiriyatswane’s striker, Lerato (Messi)
Ntamane, equalized the score.
Messi lost many goal-scoring chances in
the first half.
Kiriyatswane came back in full force
in the second half and Morris (Mokoko)
Vilakazi scored two goals.
Sanele (Innocent) Simelane scored the
second goal for Masizakhe.
The final score was 3-2 in favour of
Kiriyatswane.
The Gert Sibande District representative,
Mr Nkosi, said the match was played under
protest, because Kiriyatswane used a player
who had a red card.
He said the matter will be discussed with
the regional executive committee and if
the team is found guilty, Kiriyatswane will
have to forfeit their win and Masizakhe will
emerge as the winners.
The winning team will represent the
district at the provincial play offs at
eMbalenhle Sasol Club on Saturday, 23 July.

Approval of the Service Delivery and Budget
Implementation Plan (SDBIP)
The Council of Gert Sibande District Municipality approved its 2016/17 Budget on 25 May 2016.
Subsequent, notice is hereby given in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act, Act 56
of 2003, Section 53(1)(c)(ii - iii), which directs the Executive Mayor to “take all reasonable steps
to ensure that the Municipality’s Service Delivery and Budget Implementation Plan (SDBIP) is
approved by the Mayor within 28 days of approval of the Budget and, 14 days thereafter, notify
the public of such approval”, that the Executive Mayor of the Gert Sibande District Municipality,
His Worship, Cllr MPP Nhlabathi, approved the SDBIP on 20 June 2016.
This is a tool that will enable our communities, strategic stakeholders and Councillors to monitor
and evaluate the general performance of the Municipality against set targets on a continuous
basis.

Notice is hereby given that Transnet Pipelines a Division of Transnet SOC , will
be lodging an application for Environmental Authorisation with the National
Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), in compliance with Sections 39 to
44 inclusive of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (GN No.
R982), Government Notice No. R. 983, 984 and 985 and, under Chapter 6 Public
Participation of the National Environmental Management Act (Act 107 of 1998)
as amended, for the proposed construction of a gulley training structure and
embankment stabilisation to protect the exposed pipeline on Portion 11 of the
Farm Twistdraai No.285-IS, within Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, Gert Sibande
District Municipality.
Project Details: Transnet Pipelines (TPL) a division of Transnet SOC Limited
constructed an underground pipeline network for the transportation of
petroleum products in 1965. The network traverses five provinces: from
KwaZulu-Natal, to Gauteng, Free State, North West Province and Mpumalanga.
A section of this pipe is exposed owing to erosion within the watercourse
on Rem of Portion 11 of the farm Twistdraai No. 285-IS. The existing Transnet
pipeline crosses over a non-perennial drainage line of the Klipspruit River, and
is in the same floodplain as the Klipspruit, just prior to its confluence with the
Trichardspruit. TPL propose to construct a gabion basket headwall structure,
gabion basket river training structure, as well as a section of reno mattress at the
exposed pipeline.

Oor die stand van Suid-Afrikaanse rugby
is hy optimisties.
“Ons is nog nommer drie in die wêreld
en ek sal graag wil sien wat in die toekoms
gaan gebeur.
“Ons sal meer aanvallende rugby moet
begin speel, want ons manier van speel werk
nie teen sekere spanne nie.
“Die afrigter sal die regte taktiek en
tegnieke teen elke span moet gebruik omdat
elke land hul eie manier van speel het.”
Sy ideale afrigterspos is om ’n voorryafrigter te wees.
“Ek sal daarvan hou om net vories te
coach want ek geniet dit om met die harde
manne te werk.”

vir die Springbokke, maar vir nou is hy

Hy was al twee keer in Nieu-Seeland om
sy afrigtingstegniek te verbeter en sien uit na
’n blink toekoms as afrigter.
Mnr. Meiring is uit en uit ’n plaaslike
man.
Hy was in Trichardt Christian School
en Kruinpark Laerskool en later ook in
Hoërskool Secunda.
Een van sy gunsteling herinneringe aan sy
hoërskoolloopbaan was toe hy as jong speler
gekies is om in 2005 vir die Mpumalanga
0/19-span te speel en Mpumalanga-kleure
verwerf het.
“Daarna is ek na NWU Pukke waar ek BA
MBW en sielkunde geswot het.”
Mnr. Meiring het sy vrou, me. Benice
Meiring, op universiteit ontmoet waar sy vir
haar LLB studeer het.
“Ons was saam op skool, maar ons het nie
in dieselfde vriendekringe beweeg nie en het
nie eintlik kontak met mekaar gehad nie.
“One het deur my broer wat haar vriend
was, in haar gr. 12-jaar saam begin kuier
en toe sy universiteit toe is, het ons in haar
eerste jaar begin uitgaan.”
Hulle is al drie jaar getroud en het ’n
babadogtertjie.
Mnr. Meiring is tans ’n onderwyser en
rugby-afrigter by Hoërskool Secunda.
In sy huidige beroep leef hy sy passie vir
alle aspekte van rugby uit en sy studies in
biokinetika en sportwetenskap help hom
om van ’n ander kant af na die afrigting van
jong sportmanne te kyk.
As afrigter is een van sy grootste
suksesverhale dat hy al ’n span afgerig
het wat na die Mpumalanga-eindronde
deurgedring het.
Mnr. Meiring is vir die eerste keer in
2014 oorsee om by die Massey Universiteit
in Auckland, Nieu-Seeland, se Sport- en
Rugby-instituut meer oor die tegniese kant
van afrigting te leer.
Hy was in Februarie weer daarheen om
’n verdere kursus te voltooi. “Ek het by die

Spain 1-0 over the weekend.
Their striker, Jimmy, scored the goal in the
first half of the game.
Spain lost many chances to score goals.
Their striker, Ranger Kasanara, kept the
fans in suspense every time he was passed
the ball, but lacked the finishing touches.
The midfielder of Kinross Spain,
Thokozani (Jali) Hadebe, had the fans’
attention with his dribbling skills.
The more energetic Roman Stars player
Bongani Magazi, could not last on the field
after he had injured his right leg and asked
to be replaced.
Spain also had many scoring attempts in
the 10 minutes’ extra time, but Roman Stars’
defense was too tight.

Tournament takes place from 29 to 31

new kennels at the Highveld Ridge SPCA,
