Mooney Boats Ltd has completed
the 24-meter ‘Patrick C’, the first
dedicated prawn freezer trawler to
be purpose built for Irelands fishing
fleet. “The vessel was designed in
Denmark and the hull came from
Riga but the project is guaranteed
Irish through and through”, says
Niall Connolly of Clogherhead who
owns this fine 24-meter vessel with
his father, Seamus.
The “Patrick C” will be skippered
by Clogherhead man, Val Reilly
(29) and his crew of Stephen
Reilly, Robert Dawe, Stephen
Harmon, James Byrne and Ciaran
Ivors. Niall himself will act as
relief skipper. Says Val proudly:
“This is the first boat this size to
be built in Ireland in ten years.
Hopefully, it will be the first of
many.”
“Other boats are freezing prawns
but, with them, it was an add-on.
For us, it’s an essential part of the
design”, explained Niall.
At 42, the father of three has been
fishing for 25 years and operates
two other prawn vessels out of
Clogherhead, the 23-meter “Stella
Nova” and the 22-meter “Margaret
Mary”. All three will be landing to
Clogherhead Co-op.
Said Niall: “We went to Ove
Christiansen in Denmark because
he had built the “Stella Nova” for
us and the old ‘Patrick C’. We are
very happy with his design.”
The new “Patrick C” will have a

destined for the appreciative markets of Italy and Spain.

in its emphasis on fuel economy,
always a major consideration in
trawling. Maximum power for the
least burn will be achieved with
the extra-large propeller and slower
Mitsubishi engine, supplied by
Padmos of Kilmore Quay.

Fuel usage is critical for a vessel
such as this working the Summer
months on the Porcupine Bank and
operating in the Celtic Sea and in
the Irish Sea in the Winter.

Killybegs managed the project and
completed the internal fit, wiring
systems, piping systems, fitting of
engines along with other works.
The yard were keen to keep all
equipment supplies from within
Ireland and EK Marine Ltd were
awarded the contract to design,
manufacture and install the winches
and deck crane. Patrick Maguire’s
Marine Electronics Ltd., Galway,
provided the electronics, Boyle Air,
Drogheda, did the critical refrigeration package, and DCI Stainless
of Dunleer manufactured the fish
handling equipment. Painting was
by Gerard Bray of Killybegs.

The Main Engine is a Mitsubishi S6RT2MPTK-3 Tier 2 rated 480kw@1350rpm, a
modern high standard and fuel efficient engine,
popular in a lot of fishing trawlers.
The gear box is a Reintjes WAF 474L reverse

reduction 7,476:1, driving a 4 blades 2.5 mtr
Fixed pitch propeller, controlled with a Kobelt
electric controller. The Tail shaft and Stern tube
are manufactured and machined by the Padmos
Shipyard in the Netherlands.
The Hydraulic/Generator engine is a Padmos
designed Mitsubishi S6B3-T2MPTAW-15
rated 335kw@1500rpm and fitted on ps, with
a 120 kva Stamford generator on the front
end and a Technodrive gear box suitable for 3
90kw hydraulic pumps clutched by a 14” air
flex coupling.
A 6 Cylinder Mitsubishi 6D16-T 120 kva
Generator set is fitted on the starboard side with
a Stamford 120 kva Generator. It’s a complete
Padmos designed set including steel frame suitable for a lot of fishing trawlers and available
from 97 up to 140 kva.
The Harbour 30kva generator set is a
Mitsubishi marine set with radiator cooling,
delivered as a complete set and fitted in the
forward engine room.
