The Winter 2012. - St Patrick`s College
n a i c i r t a P The 2. 1 0 2 r e t n i W From the Principal Dear Members of the St Patrick’s College Community…. So much has happened at St Patrick’s College during the course of 2012 that it is almost impossible to accurately capture the myriad of events and educational opportunities in our community. As Principal, I am in a privileged position to be able to witness the energy and vitality of our students as they participate, learn and grow through their involvement and experiences. As a snapshot of 2012 we: • Achieved outstanding academic and vocational education results in 2011. • Celebrated St Patrick’s Day with prayer, sacrament and games. • Opened Croagh Patrick (Year Nine Campus) and began our innovative educational program introducing the Australian curriculum, the Rite Journey, a new camp and outdoor education structure challenging our students to look at themselves, each other and education in new and refreshing ways. • Participated in Senior Retreats, Remar and Reflection Days. • Clinched State titles in Firsts Cricket and Swimming Carnivals. • Celebrated 125 years with the Sisters of St Joseph by producing the play ‘Mary Mackillop’ at Holy Trinity Church, Westbury. • Renewed our commitment to service of the community through involvement in many social justice activities (e.g. Eddie Rice camps, Missionbeat, Smith Reading program). • Performed in PARTS, Senior Drama Exams, Music Tours, Rock Eisteddfod, Lions Youth of the Year and Maths Relay. One of my favourite stories revealing the moral purpose of education is ‘Releasing the Angel’. ‘One day a man came upon Michelangelo as he was chipping away with his chisel at a huge shapeless block of marble. He was surrounded by dust and fragments of marble. It was not a pretty sight. The man asked Michelangelo what he was doing and he replied, “I’m releasing the angel imprisoned in the marble”.’ The story reminds me that each student has endless potential and we (parents and teachers) are called to set young minds and hearts free to truly be themselves, discover their inner capacity and God’s unconditional love for them. This search for freedom, individuality and discovery of personal gifts is connected to living in community in our Catholic tradition. As such our daily activity has deeper meaning and is integrated into our individual and community story. Yours Sincerely Simon Cobiac Throughout all the activity it is essential to remain firmly grounded by the Mission of our College to be a school community of faith, learning, respect and service in the Catholic tradition. Otherwise, our lives can become mindless activity without core purpose and spiritual direction. We are reminded of the centrality of Jesus in our lives in 2012 by involvement in the “Year of Grace” where we are called by the Australian Bishops to start afresh in Christ and contemplate our cornerstone relationship with God. Our mission values constantly call us to reflect and centre on what is really important rather than what is sham and surface only, sometimes appealing yet ultimately unsatisfying. We are called to be persons of depth. 2 St Patr ick’s College strength through faith & kno wledge Awards St Patrick's College Academic Medal: T he St Patrick’s College Academic medal was awarded to thirty one students who achieved 90 points or more in the TQA examinations and assessment process in 2011. George will be remembered for his excellent skills, evident in all the furniture and fittings he has constructed over the years and his involvement with the College community. Pa t r i c i a n - W i n t e r 2 012 3 College News Sports Highlights Northern SATIS Swimming Carnival The team was led by swimming captains Nikki Heathcote and Thomas Johns and was placed 2nd in the overall carnival. The U13, U15, U16 and Open Girls all won their respective Age groups, and the girls won the Senior and Overall Girls shields. 1st X1 Cricket - State Final by Jake Laskey (Captain) SPC 146 and 2-74 defeated SOC 9(declared) St. Patrick’s College earned the right to host the 1st X1 Cricket State Final in March against Scotch Oakburn College. On a wicket that gave assistance to the bowlers, Scotch won the toss and sent St. Patrick’s in to bat. We lost regular wickets to be 5-41 just prior to lunch. A fighting innings of 55 from number three Ryan Bird (55) was the key to the batting recovery as he shared vital partnerships with Dylan Semmens and James Bowen. This is certain to be regarded as one of the most outstanding innings, under pressure, in modern SPC cricket history. We were dismissed just prior to stumps for 146, a great recovery and a total that we were confident that we could defend – but it would take our best bowling and fielding to do so. Our desire to never allow a partnership to become established was a highlight – led by our determined and focused captain Jake Laskey. Scotch decided to declare at 9-69 to see if they could miraculously force a second innings win but the St. Patrick’s batsmen held firm (274) for us to claim our 12th State Cricket Premiership by 77 runs. A similar pattern of losing early wickets met the Scotch top order the next morning as they slumped to 5-18 and then 7-45 at lunch. A huge cricket crowd had gathered for an action-packed and memorable morning session. St. Patrick’s opening bowler James Bowen continued on from his outstanding year as the competition’s leading bowler (37 wicket in 10 innings!) to eventually claim 6-11 from 14 menacing overs. Fellow quicks Ben Fraser and Joey Cullen were the other wicket takers. Rowing 6 State School Rowing titles for St. Patrick’s!!!! St. Patrick’s Rowers ended the season on a high coming away with 6 State Schools titles after a busy weekend at Lake Barrington on the weekend of April 21st and 22nd. With excellent rowing conditions once again, and a large number of rowers all contesting heats on Saturday held over 1000 metres, it was down to business on Sunday for the finals. With race distances changed to 2000 metres for seniors it was back to normal and all eyes on the water. Despite the dreary weather conditions spirits were still high and remained so as rowers gave it everything in what for Yr 12 students, would be their last races for the school. 4 St Patr ick’s College strength through faith & kno wledge Old Collegians BOSTON [24 May 2012] – Joseph Butler, a former resident of Prospect and student of St Patrick's College (1996-2001), graduated from Harvard Business School (HBS) on 24 May. At the diploma ceremony, held on the School’s campus in Boston, a total of 876 students received their MBA degrees at the School’s 102nd Commencement exercises. Joe's brothers Steven (SPC 2004), Vincent (SPC 2005) and Samuel (SPC 2008) and Joe's fiancée Gerardine Dillon also attended. Joe graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2006 with degrees in Engineering (Hons) and Commerce. Prior to attending HBS, Joe worked at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Cricket Australia in Melbourne, and Noel Pearson's Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership. He will resume his role with BCG in Melbourne in August. At the HBS Commencement ceremony, the keynote address was delivered by Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, a graduate of HBS (1995), and formerly an economist with the World Bank and chief of staff at the US Treasury. F rom Friday 16th – Saturday 24th of March, Encore Theatre Company presented “a theatrical triumph that took musical theatre to new and unsurpassed heights in this city”.1 Jesus Christ Superstar - one of the greatest rock musicals the world has ever known is the moving story retelling the final seven days of Jesus’ life. Four decades ago, the show premiered in Australia with an unknown rock singer for the role of Judas, and launched the career of one of Australia’s most successful performers – Jon English. Guest starring in the role of Pilate, Jon English returned to the show for the first time since the 1970s. Back row: Madeleine Page, Alexandra Harris (nee Hughes ’98), Travis Hennessey, Justin Hood (’10). St Patrick’s College had many connections to this production with past and present staff and students fulfilling a variety of roles on and off the stage. Front row: Fiona Mowat, Conor O’Brien (’95), Shannon French (’06), Jessica Wylie (Yr 10 ’11), Zoe Allen, Karen Dennis. 1 Review by Marcus Bower , The Examiner, Saturday 17 March 2012 Pa t r i c i a n - W i n t e r 2 012 5 Obituaries Vale Geoffrey Allan Max and Geoff were fierce competitors on the Squash Court and would frequently be together on the sidelines to cheer on the ‘boys’ at SPC (junior and senior school) footy and cricket games. Family holidays with the Allans were memorable occasions. Geoff will be fondly remembered by the Baker family, as a great friend and a true gentleman. Our sympathies are with his wife and soul mate Geraldine, Louise, Geoffrey and the extended family. ‘Rest in peace lovely man’ Mr Peter Sydes presenting Geoffrey & Geraldine Allan with their Life Membership to the St. Patrick’s College Parents & Friends Associaton Life member of the St. Patrick’s College Parents & Friends Association Geoffrey Allan sadly passed away in Perth Western Australia on 25th March, 2012. G eoffrey is fondly remembered as a dedicated husband, father, and hard working parent of the College over many years. Geoff and Geraldine (his wife) were both honoured with Life Membership of the St Patrick’s College Parents and Friends Association on the 7th February, 1997. As dedicated parents to their three children Louise, Francine and Geoffrey, the Allan’s were involved in all aspects of their College lives. Mrs Barbara Baker former Parent and Governing Council member of St. Patrick’s College fondly remembers Geoffrey and the Allan family. ‘We first met the Allan family when we returned from Victoria in the late 1970’s Our children were friends. Angela and Francine were in Debating teams at St Patrick’s and Ange fondly remembers a very gentle, patient Mr Allan who was always prepared to assist with transporting them wherever they needed to be. Ange also recalls the many hours he spent teaching the girls to water ski. She remembers really enjoying the loud music that he always played in the Range Rover. Damian and ‘young’ Geoffrey Allan shared a special friendship from fourth grade at ‘little’ St Pat’s. Frequently they would go off to the Allan’s shack at Beaumaris. Damian also remembers Geoff as a very patient man, happy and always ‘whistling’. 6 Ian Dalton Executive Officer of the Australian Parents Council and former State President of Tasmanian Catholic Parents & Friends Association also remembers Geoff and Geraldine through their involvement with the Parents & Friends Association and also the regional and State body of Parents & Friends. The thing that struck me about Geoff was his generosity of spirit, which he demonstrated in many ways, and always in partnership with Geraldine. I understand they were generous contributors to St Patrick’s through the giving of their time and expertise. Geoff made a significant contribution to the building of the pool and other projects around the school and at the same time supported Geraldine in her role with the P&F. I primarily knew Geoff through the support he gave Geraldine with the regional and state P&F. While Geraldine was the regional rep and state councillor, Geoff was always in the background, ready to ferry people to other parts of the state or to provide whatever practical help he could. And he did it all with such a kind and loving nature. They must have contributed literally thousands of hours between them to the benefit of the College and many other parents. I think it is a testament to Geoff that despite the serious things that went wrong in their life, such as the loss of their daughter Francine in a car crash, they never lost their passion to do whatever good for others that they could, and the way they mostly kept their sunny dispositions. While Geraldine tended to get very ‘passionate’, Geoff was the cool head who could always bring things back into perspective. I really do hope that by the grace of God Geoff is resting in the peace he deserves, and that Geraldine will find some comfort as well. The legacy and the generosity of Geoffrey and Geraldine Allan lives on in the Perpetual Award in the name of their daughter Francine. The Francine Allan award is awarded to a Year 12 student who displays the attributes of ‘All round ability, enthusiasm and leadership’. Francine was a prefect in the Year 12 Cohort of 1985. Farewell Geoffrey and may you enjoy eternal rest with God. Special Thanks Mrs Barbara Baker and family, Mr Ian Dalton and Mrs Carol Down for their contributions to the Vale article in memory of Geoffrey Allan. St Patr ick’s College strength through faith & kno wledge Trevor Reid (OAM) Trevor and Marg Reid commenced as ‘in house’ caretakers at St Patrick’s College in 1988, moving into the old Brothers quarters in the Administration Block of the College, until the College purchased the house next door at 280 Westbury Road in 1995. This was the beginning of a long and successful association until December last year, when Trevor unfortunately passed away after a relatively short period of illness. T revor’s position as caretaker required many hours a week of out of hours contact with relative staff, sporting groups, security and occasionally police and emergency services. During his time, Trevor established excellent relationships with many people associated with these groups, and always had his finger on the pulse. Trevor’s Monday morning briefings where he would pass on all out of hour’s activities, where legendary. His hand written diary contained every relative moment that occurred during the preceding week. The management and indeed all staff of the College always felt safe and secure in the knowledge that Trevor was there to attend to any out of hour’s activities. Whether that be the opening of gates or change rooms for sport, opening the staff room for teachers who had forgotten keys, parent groups, or just locking and securing the large amount of gates, doors and locks required to secure the property. Trevor could always be seen patrolling and securing the premises with his faithful dog “Tally” every night of the week. Trevor was heavily involved with music and in particular Brass Bands, and his status with that area in Tasmania is well known and documented. So much so that he was awarded the Order of Australia medal in 2010 for his services to Brass Bands and music across the State. Trevor also had a period of Tutoring students at the College – mainly brass instruments. His many students benefitted from Trevor’s vast knowledge and enthusiasm for music. An ardent Swans supporter and keen tipster in the staff tipping competition, Trevor always had some sound advice for umpires, coaches and fellow tipsters. Trevor was truly one of life’s gentlemen, a well respected and loved husband of Marg and father and grandfather to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a dedicated, committed and much loved member of the St Patrick’s College staff.
