Highlights:
Cathy’s Corner
I drove by school last Friday night…around 6:00 or
so…on North Hills right by the 5th grade wing was a
Doss parent diligently raking one of the landscaped
beds – she had a pickup truck full of trimmings and leaves. I think I recognized her
- she one of the new Doss moms I have met at a Principal Coffee! I couldn’t help
but think how very fortunate we are to have families so willing and able to do
whatever it takes…may it be keeping grounds beautiful, stuffing folders, buying
gift wrap when you already have a closet full – whatever it takes!
Unless you have been out of the country or under a rock I am sure you are aware
that Friday is our H’OWL IN THE NIGHT Carnival – a fun filled family evening
for the whole community! I hope you and your family plan to attend – and also
volunteer! I will look forward to seeing you there. (continued on page 2 )

Books Take You Places – what a great theme for the upcoming Book Fair!
Our committee has been hard at work preparing for a wonderful event for
both Doss children and adults! Book People will be providing the inventory
this year – I am so excited we are trying a new vendor – and keeping our
dollars here in the community! Join us – November 13-16 in the library and
find a book and ‘go someplace’!

President
Our November meeting will be an EVENING meeting on November 16th at 6:30 pm
in the library . We have invited a guest speaker to join us to discuss options for saving
money for college. I hope this evening time offers some of you the opportunity to
attend a PTA meeting!
Barbara Yznaga
President Elect
On November 14th , our 5th grade students will be performing their annual musical in
the cafeteria – written, directed, and choreographed by our very own Ms. Greenhaw,
this event promises to be a humorous display of our many talented students…make it a
family night out and grab a pizza beforehand at CRAIG-O’s Pizza on Balcones – the
16th is Doss Night! A percentage of all receipts will go to Doss!

In closing, I would like to share a poignant message I read in this months’ Murchison
Newsletter – Julie Cowan, a past Doss PTA President and the current Murchison PTA
President…she writes that she once read a quote that said “when your children are little the
days go by so slowly, but the years go by so quickly” So true! Keeping this in mind, slow
down and enjoy your children. Our everyday life gets so hectic and full with sports,
homework, peers, and other activities that we often don’t take the time to just enjoy
life’s most precious gifts – our children.

Doss Endowment Committee
Cathylynn Brown, Chair
Hey all! I know you are very busy with all things How’l – as
you should be. I just wanted to update you on how the
Doss Endowment Fund has been progressing.
We have an exciting event planned to benefit Doss and our
sister school, T.A. Brown. Please see future Hoot articles
for news on the “Love to Read” event which we hope to
host in February. This event is still in the planning stages
and we would love help! We will also continue with our
“Thanks for the Memories” campaign to honor our
departing 5th graders. This event was so successful last year
that we have decided to continue with it this year.
It was brought to my attention that our Fund has had an
increase in growth by 20% in one year. For those of you
who understand Endowment Funds, you know how very
extraordinary that is. Our Doss families have contributed
approximately $7,500.00 to our Fund this year! We were
able to pledge over $6000.00 to T. A. Brown, with help
from the Sequor Foundation. The Doss Endowment
Committee is helping T.A. Brown use this money to
implement some of their programs. I will share those
programs with you in the next Hoot. The Doss
Endowment Fund was able to provide Doss Elementary
with funding in the amount of $3,750.00 so that our new
teachers were able to attend the wonderful Capturing Kids’
Hearts training session.
DOSS ENDOWMENT FUND
CONTRIBUTION FORM
______ Yes, I would love to make a PERMANENT
contribution to the Doss Endowment Fund. I
understand that my contribution will stay in the
PERMANENT fund to insure Doss Elementary’s
financial future.
________ Yes, I would love to make a contribution to
the Doss Endowment Fund to benefit our Kids-At-Risk
fund and students at T.A. Brown IMMEDIATELY. I
understand that my contribution will be split 50-50 with
Doss and T.A. Brown during this school year.

Our grant team is hard at work in the extremely competitive market of Grant Writing. What we have learned is that part of our
past success in obtaining grants was relationships Doss parents had with folks who either had their own family Foundations or had
contacts with a particular Foundation. What we need from you all is contact information. Rack your brain and let the Endowment
Committee know if you have a contact, friend, family member who serves on a Foundation that gives grants to benefit school
children. The grant team is becoming seasoned in grant writing and personal contact information would be extremely helpful to
them. Also, let us know if your company has a matching program – or if your place of business has grants that they offer. A lot of
times, the company requires an employee connection in order to apply for their grant. Please feel free to call me with any
information that might be helpful.
In closing, we would like to thank the following families for their donation to the Doss Endowment Fund:
Andrew Dell’Antonio and Susan Jackson
Neil and Anne Blumofe
James and Dana Young
Cathy and Tom Painter
Won’t you consider donating to the Doss Endowment Fund? Please see the form in this Hoot addition and return it, with your
contribution, to the box in the school office. The Future is Now!!!

YEARBOOK PHOTOS
Jeannette Whitcomb, Chair
Teachers and parents, please remember to take
and turn in your best pictures of fun events in
the classrooms as the kids are having fun
learning. You don't have to work on the yearbook
committee to be a photo contributor. If you have
questions about taking or submitting photos please
pick up a copy of CAMERA TIPS FOR YEARBOOK
PHOTOS from the PTA office, or email Jeanette
Whitcomb at [email protected] . If you'd like
someone from the yearbook committee to come
take pictures in your class or after-school club
please notify us and we'll "put a lens on it". Please note: Picture retake day is Thursday,
October 26. If your child misses both picture
day and retake day please let us know so we can
still get their photo in the yearbook. We don't
want to see "photo not available" anywhere in our
yearbook!

The Pumpkin Patch was a
Smashing Success!
Barbara Yznaga, Chair
It came a week early but the Doss Pumpkin Patch was
a great success. Doss’ front yard became a sea of
orange with the delivery of almost 450 pumpkins for
this year’s Pumpkin Patch. It was so much fun to see
kids and grown ups take on the serious work of
choosing just the right pumpkin.
It took many volunteers to unload all those pumpkins
one by one off the back of an extremely long flatbed
truck. Many thanks go to the following people who
offered to help unload the truck: Xochitl Shuey,
Debbie Elliott, Vicki Osherow, Ellen Arney, Tina
Sutton, Leora Orent, Cathy Glazener, Lisa Bilnoski,
Janet Hendren, Lorna Belk, Eleanor Amaro, Betsy
Sledge, Jerry Capps, Gelide Gonzalez, Theresa
Trevino and two of Ms. Lee’s fifth grade classes
(yes, we had kids help!). Additionally, thank you to
those who helped throughout the day including:
Diane Toole, Ellen Arney, Lisa Bilnoski, Cathy
Painter, Melissa Butler, Vicki Osherow, Jessica
Friedlander, Lorna Belk, Jill Seibert, Tina Sutton
and Pat Minford who came back in the evening to
help with clean up. Another thank you to Mark
Penniman for creating fantastic signs that survived
the elements. And finally, thank you to everyone
who purchased a pumpkin or two from Doss. What
a fun way to raise money for the school and get
everyone in the mood for the H’Owl.
Come have dinner and some family fun at the Murchison Fall Fest
Carnival taking place at the school on Friday, November 3 from 5:00 –
9:00 p.m. Tickets for attractions and food are $.50 each and are available
at the door. Fall Fest is the major fundraiser for Murchison Middle
School. Proceeds from Fall Fest fund items for the classroom, books for
the library, special curriculum in character education, teacher training and
so much more!

Yes we do! The Doss Blood Drive was again successful thanks to our many donors.
Some of our generous donors who “pumped it out” included Theresa McCorquodale,
Jill Moore, Jeff Lowe, Julie Carlson Sladcik, David Stewart, Jim Lyons, Donna
Conkle, Jerry Capps, Martina Sutton, Chuck Barry, Michelle Mellon-Werch, Carol
Miller, Sarah Dowdy, Susan Truesdale, Barbara Yznaga, Chris Vrba, and Dewey

Committee for a coupon that can be used to discount the cost of transfused blood
products. We would like to thank the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas for the
commitment and enthusiasm in helping to make the Doss Blood Drive “bloody” successful.

Help Your Child Avoid Common Pitfalls of Poor
School Attendance
Beverly Throm, Doss Counselor
Today was an important day in Mrs. Johnson's classroom. She began to teach long division. Madison wasn't there. She didn't show up until after lunch. Does attendance
really matter? ABSOLUTELY. Research clearly shows a
link between being in school and doing well. Students who
miss school fall behind. Over time, that increases the
chances that they may drop out of school. When your
child wakes up with a fever of 102 degrees, she needs to
stay home. But sometimes kids miss school for things that
could easily be avoided. Here are some of the top reasons
for school absences, along with ideas on how to avoid them:
- Child can't get up. Sure, kids today need more sleep. But don't let your child sleep in the morning. Instead,
put her to bed earlier at night.
- Doctor's appointment. Ask if the doctor will see your
child outside of school hours.
- Child needs to help at home. If you work and need
child care, be sure you make a backup plan for the times
when your regular sitter can't come. It's not fair to your
older child to keep her at home.
- Can't get organized. Take a few minutes at night to
prepare for the next day. Lay out clothes, pack the child's
lunch, and put school materials in the same spot each
night somewhere near the door.
- Child doesn't want to go. Talk to the teacher. See if
there are issues you can resolve together. But, make it
clear that your child will go to school each day.
Help your child understand that she has control
of--and responsibility for--many aspects of her life. Her choices make a difference and require thought.
Encourage your child to:
- Be aware of what she does right. Tell her how her
effort or practice led to a certain payoff. Studying
her spelling led to an "A".
- Realize that she acts voluntarily. She can make
good or bad choices.
- See the connection between her actions and the
consequences. What happens when she doesn't get
up on time for school?
- Reflect on different actions she could take. What
might she do if her friend calls before she's
finished her homework?
- Consider the likely consequences of her actions
BEFORE she acts. What happened last time? Did
she feel good about what she did? Did it lead to a
lost privilege or a reward?
- Keep track of her behavior and the consequences. Evaluate whether she's making more responsible
choices.
Thanks to all our
Read Naturally Volunteers!
Chairs - Karin Foster, Amy Gillespie, Diane Hayes
Thanks to all of our fantastic volunteers, Read Naturally is
off to a wonderfully smooth start. We currently have
twenty-one parents (and grandparents!) working with
twenty-four kids. We are, however, always looking for
more volunteers as teachers see a need in their classroom.
Read Naturally is fun and fulfilling. It only takes thirty
minutes a week (or more if you have time), but the
rewards are great. If you are interested in volunteering, or
would just like more information, please contact one of
us.
