The real allure might lie in the abundance of charming communities nestled among local trees, vines and streams. These quaint small towns embody the welcoming spirit of neighborliness and goodwill lacking in more urban regions. Throughout the course of a year, we try to cover the events these communities host, celebrating everything which makes the valley so special. As in all towns, groups of people who share backgrounds, interests or goals form the framework on which a community is built — the Yamhill Valley is no exception. In this special section, we celebrate the women who are responsible for so much of the area’s well-known economic, aesthetic and cultural success. These natural leaders are a big part of what makes the Yamhill Valley a remarkable place to live, work and visit. Here’s to the Women of the Yamhill Valley! Watching the difference the foundation makes in the lives of cancer patients and their families shows Carrie that the organization’s efforts are both crucial and appreciated. The Cancer Foundation provides vital support for local friends, family and neighbors during their cancer treatment journeys. This financial support helps lift the burden of everyday life expenses, so cancer patients can focus on treatment. The 501(c)3 non-profit foundation provides assistance with housing, groceries, prescriptions, transportation, utilities, insurance premiums, prosthetics and wigs and more. Carrie said WVCF not only raises funds locally, but those funds are distributed in the same community. “Donations directly impact cancer patients and their families locally,” said Carrie. “I have the opportunity to work in an amazing and supportive community with outstanding individuals,” said Carrie. “If it was not for the support of this community, the cancer foundation would not be able to sustain our financial assistance program.” Program Director Program director Kassandra Baker is motivated by a personal connection to the mission of WVCF: her mother survived breast cancer. “I want to see the foundation grow so we can continue making a difference in the lives of cancer patients,” she said. Kassandra said that donations and planned giving are taxdeductible contributions essential for the foundation to continue serving. “Your contributions help us make a true difference during a cancer patient’s difficult journey,” she said. Kassandra is a northwest native with strong connections to the Yamhill Valley community. She loves the opportunity to make a difference and truly love the work they do — “Live local. Give local.” Visit the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation web site. “You can see how we’re making a significant impact. When the couple launched Botten’s Equipment and Event Rental in McMinnville, the business opening filled a gaping need in the Yamhill Valley community. In 2015, Botten’s Equipment and Event Rental expanded its rental lines to include event and party rental supplies, allowing local folks to take full advantage of the area’s picturesque vineyards, wineries and rolling hills. Since the company already offered gardening and ground work equipment in addition to rock, soils and bark dust, Shannon knew the company was perfectly poised to fill a great number of local needs. Shannon earned a master’s degree from Pacific University and serves as a special education teacher at Duniway Middle School. Shannon and her husband live in McMinnville with their toddler daughter, Nora Mae. In her free time, Shannon enjoys running and coaching McMinnville High School’s cross country team. Having married into the rental industry, Johanne is perfectly suited for her duties at Botten’s. She can be found assisting customers and processing linens for their recent expansion into party and event rental.
