Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life . . . her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (no. 7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire Church Community to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others. How are parents, the primary Catechists of their children acknowledged on Catechetical Sunday? Parents are truly the primary Catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of Catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of blessing of Catechists used on Catechetical Sunday is also for parents and guardians. Today, let us pray for Catechists, Teachers and Parents, that they may truly be ‘Agents of the New Evangelization’ as the Theme of the Catechetical Year 2012-2013 suggests. Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 16th, 2012. Today’s Gospel (Mk. 8:27-35) & Catholic Charities: Who do you say Jesus is? Your friend? Companion? The rule setter? Pacifist? King? Take some time this week and reflect upon who you think Jesus is in your own life. How does this affect your relationship with Him and others? As stated several times throughout the Gospels, Jesus is a compassionate humanitarian. Catholic Charities attempts to emulate Jesus as an organization that reaches out to the poor and vulnerable to give them a helping hand. To learn more about what Catholic Charities does in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe look at the Catholic Charities website, www.ccasfnm.org or facebook page www.facebook.com/CCASFNM. CATECHETICAL SUNDAY This Sunday we honor and pray for all of our catechists. We are deeply grateful for all who offer their time and talent to serve our youth and young adults in their religious education and formation in faith. Thanks to Sr. Grace de Paoli, our Director of Religious Education and to all who work with her in this vital ministry which renews our community in the ways of the Catholic faith. Please thank a catechist or a mentor for sharing the treasures of our faith with our growing community. God bless you all! ELECTIONS & NON-NEGOTIABLE MATTERS I want to bring to your attention some of the non-negotiable matters of the faith that you must take into consideration as you consider the upcoming elections. I. The first matter is the dignity of human life. The Church has consistently maintained that human life is inviolable from the moment of conception until the last breath of life. We can in no way participate in, support or promote abortion, euthanasia or fetal stem cell research as they destroy innocent life. We may, on the other hand, promote adult stem cell research as it does no harm to life and is proving to be most effective in healing and saving lives. II. Marriage is the permanent union of one man and one woman and has been God’s plan for the human race since Adam and Eve. No one has the right to redefine what God has defined in Sacred Scripture. We must defend traditional conjugal union from any attempt to equate same-sex relationships with marriage whatsoever. In addition, we must defend against human cloning as contrary to the moral law since it is in opposition to the dignity of human procreation and conjugal union. III. Freedom of religion is a right protected by our Church and our nation’s Constitution. Any attempt to infringe upon this right is an offense against God, our forefathers and our conscience. Please investigate the positions of the candidates in order to avoid supporting those things which are indeed contrary to the faith and our human dignity. STATE FAIR When visiting the State Fair this year, stop by the Archdiocesan booth for free literature about our Catholic Faith. In addition, please visit Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church’s double booth, all in the Manuel Lujan Building. The parish’s booths include both Eastern and Roman Catholic books, icons and Catholic devotionals in one and the other booth will give out information on the Knights of Columbus, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and a UNM club on Catholic evangelization and apologetics. Literature on how to answer challenges about the Catholic faith will be available. SCRIPTURE ALPHABET E- Romans 10:13 “Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” CALLING ALL MEN We have begun the second year of formation here in a men’s spirituality group called That Man is You.
